Samsung undisputed leader in global smartphone display market

Samsung Display remains the undisputed leader in the global smartphone display market thanks to the high demand for flexible OLED panels which are being widely adopted by smartphone makers, according to a recent report by market researcher IHS on June 29.
The display-making unit of Samsung Electronics topped the market for small- and medium-sized displays measuring 9 inches and below by posting US$3.55 billion revenue in the first quarter. The figure accounts for 27,2% of the overall segment, followed by Japan Display with 17.8% and LG Display with 12.2%.
In the smartphone display segment, Samsung beat other rivals with its market share standing at 34,6% during the first three months, followed by JDI’s 18,8% and LG Display’s 12,7%.
This segment takes up a whopping 76,2% share in the entire small- and medium-sized display market, and generated a total of US$9.94 billion revenue in the cited period, up 41% on-year.
A noticeable factor in the smartphone segment is that the average display size for smartphones has increased from 4.5 inches to 4.8 inches, and those with resolution higher than HD quality have joined the mainstream.
Demand for the flexible OLED display, which is often deployed for premium smartphones such as Samsung Galaxy S8, saw a significant growth in the three-month period, the IHS report showed. The total sales generated by flexible OLED displays grew 124% on-year to US$1.11 billion.
Flexible OLED has gained popularity among smartphone makers as the technology boasts greater color contrast and energy efficiency than traditional LCD and gives set makers a leeway to differentiate the product design.
Tech giant Apple is expected to adopt flexible OLED for its upcoming iPhone, tentatively dubbed the iPhone 8. Samsung currently dominates the flexible OLED market with its market share reaching 95%, according to IHS.
“Around 14.5 billion units of flexible OELD displays are expected to be shipped this year, generating US$9.26 billion in revenue,” said an official from the market research firm, forecasting that the shipments and total market revenue will likely increase to 39.6 billion units and US$20.9 billion, respectively, in 2020.

Albertina

The Frame.
The Frame.
Samsung Pay Mini.

Samsung Surprises Art Crowd with Fake Monet

Samsung recently surprised museum visitors by exchanging a real Monet for a deceptively identical TV image in Austria. Among the art works exhibited at the Albertina in Vienna was Samsung’s The Frame TV which turns into a picture whilst in “Art Mode”. The surprising effect of how real masterpieces look on a TV can now be viewed on YouTube. As a result, the Albertina is the world’s first art museum to make masterpieces of its famous Batliner Collection of classical modernist paintings available from The Frame Art Store. Owners of The Frame can now enrich their homes with more than 40 works of art from this collection.
The Frame integrated seamlessly into the spatial ambience of the Albertina galleries by combining market leading picture quality with surprising design features never before seen on a TV. Visitors noticed nothing suspicious among the many works of art. The crowning glory for many museum visitors is the The Water Lily Pond by Monet. Or so they thought. Instead of the original masterpiece, it was revealed that it was in fact the unique display of The Frame in “Art Mode”. The Frame passed the test in the Albertina: the picture deemed incredibly real to visitors.
“The goal was to demonstrate as authentically as possible how realistic even famous masterpieces appear on The Frame. Thanks to many years of partnership, this experiment with the Albertina and the Monet from the Batliner Collection was truly and visibly impressive”, explains Sunghan Kim, President Samsung Electronics Austria GmbH.

More than 40 Works from the Albertina Collection will Enrich Personal Living Rooms

This event perfectly demonstrates how The Frame display transforms into a work of art when the TV is not in use. With the “Samsung Collection”, owners can choose from more than 100 exclusive works of art by renowned global artists that have been commissioned and hand-selected by Samsung. Now, in partnership with the Albertina Art Museum, a leading art museum in Austria, art lovers can begin or expand their personal collection exclusively with more than 40 works of art from the Batliner Collection on exhibit in the Albertina. “We are very proud to be the first art museum worldwide to be featured in the in the Art Store with our collection. Though the sensuous art experience in the museum is not replaceable, the impressive resolution of The Frame will enable you to recreate the Albertina atmosphere and enjoy masterpieces of the Batliner collection at home”, said Prof. Dr. Klaus Albrecht Schröder, Director General of the Albertina.

Art Creates Joy

The Frame, developed in collaboration with the renowned Swiss industrial designer Yves Béhar, is an innovative lifestyle TV that transforms from a television into a work of art when switched off. This revolutionary technology gives the television a new meaning and purpose, whether turned on or off. The Frame beautifies any living space, and is designed to live in harmony with the owners interior décor. Pushing the boundaries of traditional TV, The Frame provides users more than a place to enjoy their favorite entertainment programming – it’s also a statement piece within the home, similar to what you might find in an art gallery. The Frame, a CES 2017 ‘Best of Innovations Award’ recipient, was created with the modern TV user in mind. Addressing today’s constant movement between one screen to the next, Samsung created an innovative product that also serves as a functional part of everyday life.

Samsung Display to build largest-ever OLED plant

Samsung Display plans to build the largest-ever OLED production lines in Korea in a bid to further widen the gap with fast-growing Chinese display makers, industry sources told ET News on June 30.
The new plant consisting of two buildings, tentatively called A5, will be located in Cheonan and Asan in South Chungcheong Province. The production capacity is expected to reach 180,000 to 270,000 units of the sixth-generation OLED panels per month, about 30 percent jump compared to its own A3 plant, currently the largest OLED plant.
“Even though the plan needs to be approved at a board meeting next month, Samsung has already informed the plans to key equipment suppliers,” an industry source said on condition of anonymity.
Considering the size, sources said the investment could amount to 2 trillion won (US$1.75 billion) for the building construction alone. If the construction starts later this year, the plant’s operation is expected to start from 2019.
Samsung has started expansion work of the A3 plant since 2015 in order to meet Apple’s orders. The display maker has beefed up OLED production for 135,000 units per month mostly for its sister firm Samsung Electronics and Apple. The A3 expansion work is still ongoing, with the completion set for October this year.
Sources said Samsung is likely to speed up the A5 construction compared to the A3 with aims to produce larger OLED panels for foldable devices. Currently, the most widely used smartphone OLED is 5-6 inches, while foldable devices would have a larger screen at about 9-10 inches.
“Chinese display makers are making all-out efforts to beef up production (that would lower panel prices overall). Samsung is seeking to secure an edge on production volume, technology and prices,” said another source.
A Samsung spokesperson declined to confirm the new plant plans, saying nothing has been confirmed.
