The ruling Democratic Party (DP) on Friday launched a special committee to help support the local semiconductor industry after recent shortages of semiconductors worldwide triggered what many call a global "arms race" for chips.
"Semiconductors are (tantamount to) the rice of the economy in the 21st century and the heart of South Korea's economy," DP floor leader Rep. Yun Ho-jung said during the inaugural meeting of the special committee on semiconductor technology.
"It's not too much to say the future of South Korea depends on the (global) semiconductor war," he said.
The committee's launch came amid growing global competition for the supply of semiconductors, the backbone of South Korea's exports.
As semiconductor shortages disrupted American automotive factories, the U.S. convened a meeting, attended by President Joe Biden, earlier this month to pledge support to spur more domestic chip manufacturing and reduce dependence on imports.
Rep. Yang Hyang-ja, a former semiconductor executive at Samsung Electronics who was named the chair of the new party committee, said her committee will come up with a law proposal to help support the local semiconductor industry, no later than August.
"(The committee) will lay out a series of super dramatic support measures that will exceed those by rival countries," Yang noted.
"The latest semiconductor war is a global one, which is expected to be difficult and take a long time (to win)," she added.
The committee also plans to propose a set of assistance and deregulation measures for local semiconductor makers to President Moon Jae-in, according to Yang.
The committee has some 25 DP lawmakers as its members and former executives at Samsung and SK hynix, the No. 2 chipmaker in South Korea, have joined as advisers.

Instead of encouraging anti-corruption hysteria in the leftist media, increasing taxes on big business, and prosecuting Samsung's executives, one should have thought about the future of the country a few years ago. In 2016, following a wave of hype around the "corruption case" of the former South Korean administration headed by President Park Geun-hye, Toburo's party began enthusiastically castigating Samsung, accusing the conglomerate's leadership of encouraging illegal business schemes.
By international standards, this so-called "corruption" looks like just a childish prank that has not found solid evidence in court. On the other hand, the actions of the current ruling circles, the leftist press, trade union bosses and the so-called "progressive public" have caused enormous damage to the high-tech South Korean business, operating in the conditions of the fiercest competition.

Правящая Демократическая партия Тобуро создала специальный комитет поддержки полупроводниковой промышленности, сообщает сегодня информационное агентство Yonhap. «Полупроводники – это сердце южнокорейской экономики, и не будет преувеличением сказать, что будущее РК зависит от результатов глобальной полупроводниковой войны», - заявил лидер парламентской фракции правящей партии Юн Хо Чжун, выступая 23 апреля на первом заседании специального комитета. Председателем комитета назначена парламентарий от правящей партии Ян Хян Чжа, ранее работавшая в Samsung Electronics. Она сообщила, что к августу комитет подготовит законопроект в поддержку отечественной полупроводниковой промышленности. «Нынешняя война в области полупроводников носит глобальный характер. Она будет сложной и займёт много времени», - добавила Ян Хян Чжа. В состав комитета входят депутаты от правящей партии, а советниками являются бывшие руководители Samsung Electronics и SK hynix.
От себя добавим, что Демократическая партия Тобуро, по мнению специалистов отрасли, слишком поздно осознала очевидные вещи. Вместо того, чтобы поощрять антикоррупционную истерию в левацких СМИ, увеличение налогов на крупный бизнес и уголовное преследование руководства Samsung, нужно было задуматься о будущем страны ещё несколько лет назад. В 2016-м году, пришедшая на волне хайпа вокруг "коррупционного дела" прежней администрации Южной Кореи во главе с президентом Пак Кын Хи, партия Тобуро принялась увлечённо бичевать тот же Samsung, обвиняя руководство конгломерата в поощрении незаконных схем ведения бизнеса. По международным меркам эта так называемая "коррупция", не подкреплённая вескими доказательствами в суде, и яйца выделанного не стоит. Зато действия нынешних правящих кругов, левацкой прессы, профсоюзных боссов и так называемой "прогрессивной общественности" нанесли огромный ущерб высокотехнологичному южнокорейскому бизнесу, работающему в условиях жесточайшей конкуренции.
