Samsung Canada extends partnership with Holland Bloorview in support of autism research and programming

In support of World Autism Month, Samsung Canada is donating the TIZEN-powered Galaxy Watch Active and Galaxy tablets to the Autism Research Centre at Holland Bloorview Kids Rehabilitation Hospital to help support ongoing research and programming for children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). The devices will be used to support children in a variety of treatment, research, and everyday settings.

Watches and tablets will be used in a study examining the effectiveness of virtual reality (V/R) technology in reducing anxiety related to visiting the dentist. Study participants will receive a Samsung tablet pre-loaded with a V/R simulation of a dental office, to determine if engaging with the video helps to lessen the anxiety felt during their visit. In another study, devices will also be used to help track the efficacy of a medication being studied for anxiety management.

In school and treatment settings, watches and tablets will be used to support children with ASD with emotion regulation. Additionally, the devices will support the delivery of virtual programming for children and their families. These include a virtual anxiety management program for children living in northern Indigenous communities, and a virtual early intervention program for toddlers with social communication challenges and their caregivers.

“Technology has tremendous potential to help support children with ASD and their families,” says Dr. Azadeh Kushki, Senior Scientist, Bloorview Research Institute. “With the device donation from Samsung, we’re able to realize some of this potential by developing and evaluating innovative technology-based supports and interventions.”

Samsung has partnered with Holland Bloorview in the past to deliver innovative technology solutions in support of ASD, including a research study conducted by the institute aimed at learning more about how children and youth with ASD use technology. Samsung has also donated wearables in support of Holland Bloorview’s Anxiety Meter project, a project centred on the use of technology to detect children’s anxiety levels, to help them better manage symptoms and improve health outcomes.

“Technology is a powerful driver of change, and for years, Samsung devices have been helping to deliver better outcomes in our communities,” said Jennifer Groh, Senior Director, Corporate Marketing and Citizenship, Samsung Canada. “Our partnership with Holland Bloorview is an example of how far that impact goes, with our devices supporting new treatments and an enhanced quality of care for children with autism.”

Since 2015, Samsung has donated over 5,000 devices to families with autism and autism service organizations to raise awareness of the positive impact technology can make in the lives of children and youth with ASD.

В рамках Всемирного месяца информирования об аутизме(1) канадское подразделение Samsung безвозмездно предоставило смарт-часы Galaxy Watch Active и планшеты Galaxy Центру исследований аутизма в детской больнице Holland Bloorview Kids Rehabilitation Hospital, которая находится в Торонто. Устройства нужны для проведения исследований и поддержки программ для детей с расстройствами аутистического спектра. TIZEN-часы и Android-планшеты будут использоваться в различных видах терапий, исследованиях, а также в повседневной работе.

Устройства Samsung помогут в проведении исследования, которое посвящено изучению эффективности технологий виртуальной реальности (VR) для снижения беспокойства из-за посещения стоматолога. Участники исследования получат планшет Samsung с предустановленным VR-симулятором стоматологического кабинета, чтобы определить, помогает ли предварительное знакомство с кабинетом уменьшить чувство тревоги.

Samsung has launched a giant marketing campaign around the new Galaxy series of premium laptops, but they won't be on sale in most countries

The indefinitely protracted quarantine measures have put consumer electronics manufacturers in a better position as more people around the world are embracing telecommuting and learning opportunities. In addition, visits to cinemas and entertainment venues in many countries are still either limited or not available at all. This has led to a noticeable increase in demand for personal computers, tablets, as well as monitors and televisions, since more and more people have to work and have fun within their own home or apartment.

Taking advantage of the situation, Samsung has brought a wide range of new products to the global market, from home appliances and high-end TVs to premium laptops. However, the latter category in the Samsung portfolio is very limited. As one of the largest suppliers of electronic components, the South Korean tech giant is not looking to compete with the Chinese PC makers, which are its customers, according to various industry sources. Samsung laptop and desktop shipments are currently limited to a few high-margin markets.

Customers in North America (USA and Canada) and South Korea have the largest selection, while a limited number of models are available for residents of China, Singapore, Brazil and several European countries. In other regions, Samsung computers are either not sold at all, or are imported on a very limited scale by private retailers.

Against this background, the incredible hype that unfolded around the emergence of new models of the Galaxy Book line of 2021 is not entirely clear. The impression is that Samsung is going to bring its computers back to the global market. However, no official statements were made on this matter.

The performance and communication capabilities of the new portable computing devices are truly impressive. The only pity is that few are destined to take advantage of these benefits.

Кроме того, посещение кинотеатров и увеселительных заведений во многих странах до сих пор либо ограничено, либо вообще недоступно. Это повлекло заметное увеличение спроса на персональные компьютеры, планшеты, а также на мониторы и телевизоры, поскольку работать и развлекаться всё чаще приходится в пределах собственного дома или квартиры.

Воспользовавшись ситуацией, Samsung вывел на глобальный рынок большое количество новых продуктов - от бытовой техники и высококлассных телевизоров до премиальных ноутбуков. Однако последняя категория в портфолио Samsung занимает весьма ограниченный объём. Согласно данным из различных отраслевых источников, будучи одним из крупнейших поставщиков электронных компонентов, южнокорейский техногигант не стремится конкурировать с китайскими производителями ПК, которые являются его клиентами. Поставки ноутбуков и стационарных компьютеров Samsung в настоящее время ограничено несколькими высокодоходными рынками.

Наибольший выбор имеют покупатели в Северной Америке (США и Канада) и Южной Корее, в то время как жителям Китая, Сингапура, Бразилии и нескольких европейских стран доступно ограниченное количество моделей. Что касается технических характеристик и коммуникационных возможностей новых портативных вычислительных устройств, то они действительно впечатляют. Жаль только, что воспользоваться этими преимуществами суждено немногим.
