In 2018, Samsung Electronics will get a record profit
Samsung Electronics is expected to post a weaker performance for the fourth quarter compared with a year earlier, analysts said on Dec. 24.
Local analysts said the Korean tech giant is forecast to report an operating profit of 13.9 trillion won (US$12.30 billion) for the October-December period, down 7,6% from the 15.1 trillion won reached a year earlier.
Sales are estimated at 63.8 trillion won, down 3,2% over the cited period, analysts added. The company is expected to announce its fourth-quarter earnings guidance report in early January.
It will mark the first time for the quarterly operating profit to fall below the 14 trillion-won mark since the 9.9 trillion won reported for the first quarter of 2017.
The operating profit estimate is also down 20,5% from the 17.5 trillion won posted in the third quarter of this year, which was a record high.
The weaker outlook for the October-December period came as the global price of DRAM and NAND flash memory chips dropped.
Other uncertainties include the trade discord between Washington and Beijing, the rapid changes in the international financial market and China’s large-scale investment in the semiconductor industry.
For all of 2018, however, Samsung Electronics is expected to enjoy a record operating profit of 62.6 trillion won, breaking the previous high of 53.6 trillion won from last year.
Market analysts say that by the autumn of 2019 a new “supercycle” is expected to start for memory chip manufacturers, which again will lead to a significant increase in the profitability of this business line of Samsung Electronics.

Here’s when the Samsung Galaxy S8, Note 8, and 22 other devices will get the Android Pie update
Android Pie, in itself, brought several changes to the Android framework itself, as well as to the user interface and the overall user experience. Some features were introduced, and some were removed, for better or worse, but the overall experience is a lot different from Android Oreo. Android Pie has been released now to several devices from many manufacturers, either in stable or beta status. And with 2019 being just a week away, Samsung has now detailed their official One UI (Android 9 Pie) update roadmap which includes devices like the Galaxy S8, Galaxy Note 8, Galaxy S9, Galaxy Note 9, and many others.
Samsung’s One UI update brings a system-wide dark theme, a redesign with an emphasis on one-handed ease-of-use, new full-screen gestures, and more. Flagship phones like the Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+ are already receiving the update and the Galaxy Note 9 is already running beta builds. The official update roadmap has gone live on the Samsung Members app, detailing Android Pie update ETAs for 24 Samsung Galaxy flagship and mid-range phones. The Samsung Galaxy S9 and the Samsung Galaxy S9+ are obviously first on the list, with both devices expected to globally receive a stable One UI update by January. The Galaxy Note 9 will then follow in February, while their previous generation flagship phones, the Galaxy S8, Galaxy S8+, and Galaxy Note 8 are set to receive the update by March. Their mid-range/low-end devices will then follow from April onwards.
There are some notable omissions from the list, particularly including the Galaxy S7 and the Galaxy S7 edge—both devices have already received their 2 major updates (Android Nougat and Android Oreo) and are thus not eligible for another one. Also excluded from this list is the Galaxy Note FE (Galaxy Note 7), which was rumored a few weeks back to be receiving the Android Pie update.
