Samsung Electronics announced a new partnership with Etsy, the global marketplace for unique and creative goods, bringing 25 new works of nature-inspired art to The Frame, available exclusively on Samsung’s Art Store. Available worldwide beginning October 28, the collection of imaginative and family-friendly art features five popular Etsy artists: Jorey Hurley, Elly Mackay, Melanie Mikecz, David Scheirer and Mirlande Jean-Gilles, who work in a variety of mediums from collage to watercolor. The 25 selected works from the artists feature a mix of vivid illustrations, colorful collages, and whimsical imagery and graphics that come alive on The Frame’s QLED screen, awakening imagination in any room of the house.

Designed to be a TV when it’s on and art when it’s off, The Frame is an innovative digital canvas that reflects an individual’s personal style. Samsung Electronics to fully employ 5-nano process to make own phones and others

Samsung Electronics Co. will employ 5-nanometer process to make modem chips for own premium phones and for contract clients from next year for a new traction in revenue from mobile chips. It would be the industry’s first to run mobile chip fabrication on 5-nano node in high volume.

According to multiple sources from the semiconductor industry on Tuesday, Samsung Electronics is expected to commence mass-production of its 5-nano mobile application processor (AP) chips starting next year after improving production yields.

Nano refers to the width of chip circuit line, and the thinner the circuit width, the higher the chip performance and energy efficiency.

Currently, Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC), the world’s top foundry player, and Samsung Electronics are the only chipmakers with stable 5-nano processing technology.

Samsung Electronics aims to win over more clients through 5-nano system-on-a chip next year. Its chip combines an AP and modem chip with thinner circuit width that not only allows slimmer mobile device designs but also reduces both costs and heat.

According to industry tracker Counterpoint Research, Samsung Electronics accounted for 13% of the world’s mobile AP market as of June, following Qualcomm with 29%, MediaTek with 26%, and HiSilicon with 16%, and Apple with 13%.

Samsung Electronics’ Exynos 2100, the mobile AP for its flagship Galaxy S21 smartphone scheduled for release next year, will be mass produced using the 5-nanometer system-on-a chip. It will also seek to supply its APs to Chinese smartphone makers.

Last year, Samsung Electronics began to supply Exynos chips to China’s Vivo. It will unveil the 5-nanometer Exynos 1080 on Nov. 12 in China that is expected to be supplied to Chinese smartphone makers Xiaomi, Oppo, and Vivo.

Samsung Electronics also continues to go all out to expand its presence in the foundry sector.

Last quarter, Samsung Electronics started to mass produce Snapdragon 875G, Qualcomm’s mobile AP chip. Industry insiders estimated up to 500 million AP chips to be produced annually. Samsung Electronics has also launched consigned production of the latest graphics processing units of Nvidia, the world’s leader in GPU market.

Expectations are high now that Samsung Electronics would win the order for Intel’s next-generation computer processing unit (CPU) after Intel hinted at outsourcing in chip production due to a delay in its own 7-nanometer process commercialization.

Raja Koduri, senior vice president at Intel Corporation was invited as speaker last month for Samsung Electronics’ online foundry event SAFE Forum, while working-level officials from Intel are frequently visiting Samsung Electronics foundry unit to suggest a deal in the making.

With a rapid boost in Samsung Electronics’ system semiconductor business this year, analysts expected solid growth in its non-chip business. Samsung Electronics does not release detailed earnings for its system semiconductor business, but industry sources projected that revenue from the sector that hovered below 15 trillion won ($13.2 billion) until 2018 to easily exceed 17 trillion won this year and reach 20 trillion won next year.

Free movie service FILMZIE has been launched on TIZEN-platform Samsung TV+. The service is available in the UK.

Free-to-view streaming movie service Filmzie hopes to pick up a following in the UK, after launching as a channel on the Samsung Tizen smart platform. It appears as a linear channel on Samsung TV Plus, so no additional app is required.

Part of this linear experience is Filmzie’s Advertising-based Video on Demand (AVoD) offering for users, meaning that all of the films in the Filmzie catalogue are just a click away. As an AVoD platform, the service is advertising supported, rather than requiring payment of any additional subscription or membership.

Currently the service lists over 1,000 titles in its catalogue, some relatively new others curated from a broad catalogue collection. One element that separates it from its rivals is a social platform, which seeks to make it more than just another film library.

“Movies are there to be watched, not hidden away behind paywalls by big corporations to line their own pockets. The film industry needs to support all the different, clever, entertaining, and passionately made movies out there,” says Matej Boda, CEO. “Films have the power to change opinions; to bewilder us, astonish us and bring joy to our lives, and we are democratizing films. We’re giving people access to great dramas, documentaries, comedies, art-house, and all the wonderful other genres between or that defy definition. We know that people understand that films cost money and producers, especially the small indies, deserve to be paid. Our AVoD model means viewers see fewer, targeted ads, in the knowledge that in return they get access to a world of fantastic films. A price worth paying.”

Filmzie is also available as an iOS and Android app via the Samsung Galaxy Store and Google Play, or through web browsers.

The Samsung linear streaming launch is the first in what is planned as a multimarket international roll-out. Additional territories and platforms are expected to follow later in 2020 and next year with localised catalogues.

Filmzie service supports all TIZEN-based Samsung smart TVs released in 2016 or later.
