Новые смарт-телевизоры Samsung помогут людям с проблемами зрения и слуха

Samsung Electronics объявляет, что в сегменте премиальных 4K-телевизоров в 2017-м году будут представлены модели, способных адаптироваться под нужды людей, имеющих проблемы со слухом и зрением.

Например, для тех, кто страдает дальтонизмом или цветовой слепотой, Samsung планирует реализовать качественный чёрно-белый режим с повышенной контрастностью и детализацией изображения.
Ранее в этом году было выпущено приложение Samsung SeeColors, которое позволяет владельцам телевизора пройти тест и самостоятельно определить возможные отклонения в восприятии цветовой палитры, после чего телевизор сможет демонстрировать более адекватную для вашего зрения картинку.
Для страдающих нарушениями слухового аппарата, Samsung предоставит возможность самостоятельно определять местоположение и размер субтитров в любой части экрана, чтобы комфортно смотреть телевизор из любой точки помещения, сообщает бизнес-портал The Investor.

Samsung beefs up accessibility for premium TVs

Samsung Electronics said Dec. 27 the premium Ultra HD TVs to be released next year will come with improved accessibility for users with difficulties in hearing and vision.
The Korean tech giant said while its televisions already come with various features for users with such difficulties, the latest models will take another step forward in making Samsung products more accessible.
Among the new features is turning the screen into black-and-white for users who are fully color blind. Samsung said it has focused on enhancing the contrast ratio and clearing the boundaries among images.
For those with hearing difficulties, Samsung said its new products will allow users to relocate subtitles anywhere on the screen to help them enjoy watching TVs from different angles. 
The SeeColors application, which was launched last year, also provides people who have vision deficiencies with relatively accurate color renditions.
Samsung Electronics said it will continue to make investments and conduct research to lower barriers for users with hearing and vision issues.

Российский производитель оборудования для майнинга заключил контракт с Samsung на поставку чипов

Портал ETNews сообщает, что Samsung Electronics заключил крупную сделку на поставку чипов российской компании Baikal, специализирующейся на производстве оборудования для майнинга.
Сообщается, что подразделение Samsung Semiconductor, занимающееся производством чипов, скоро начнёт поставки 14-нанометровых ASIC-чипов для нового майнингового оборудования, которое производит Baikal. Первая партия чипов уже была протестирована, а массовое производство планируется начать в январе 2018 года.
Отраслевые наблюдатели отметили, что Samsung обычно предпочитает иметь дело с гигантами индустрии, такими как Qualcomm или Apple. А подписание подобных договоров с малоизвестной российской компанией, создающей оборудование для добычи криптовалюты, — совершенно несвойственно Samsung.
Тем не менее предполагаемой сделке есть рациональное объяснение: Samsung вполне может объединиться с небольшим, но перспективным производителем оборудования для майнинга, чтобы затем продвигать его продукцию в Южной Корее, которая на данный момент является одним из 5-ти крупнейших криптовалютных рынков.
ASIC — специализированные устройства, разработанные для добычи криптовалют, обычно для одного или нескольких видов «монет», которые, однако, могут выдавать гораздо более высокие показатели при добыче криптовалют, чем фермы на видеокартах.

Samsung Electronics to Produce ASICs for a Russian Bitcoin Mining Hardware Company

South Korean semiconductor industries are faced with unexpected high demands due to booming of Bitcoin mining. Amount of work recently made a sudden increase for semiconductor foundries and OSAT (Outsourced Semiconductor Assembly & Test) industries. Number of orders is also flooding towards packaging equipment manufacturers.
According to industries on the 21st, it is confirmed that Samsung Electronics recently signed off on a contract with Baikal, which is a Russian Bitcoin mining hardware (HW) company, regarding foundry business for ASIC (Application-Specific Integrated Circuit) for mining. Sample production is currently finished, and Samsung Electronics is going to mass-produce these semiconductors on full-scale starting from January of 2018 through 14nm process. Baikal is planning to release new Bitcoin miners through chips that are produced from Samsung Electronics’ plants.
It is very unusual that Samsung Electronics, which has opened its foundry business to global strategic customers such as Apple and Qualcomm, signed off on a contract with an unfamiliar Russian company. “We believe that Samsung Electronics opened its foundry business to Baikal for future investments as HW markets related to virtual currency have been heating up recently.” said a representative who is familiar with Samsung Electronics. “Taiwan’s TSMC is already making huge sales in this field.”
Bitcoin mining HW industries have emerged as big investors for semiconductor markets. Bitcoin does not have a central control agency and it is issued through mining process. One can obtain certain amount of Bicoin by cracking a code through computers. Bitcoin uses SHA-256, which is a standard hash function designated by NSA (National Security Agency). ASIC that is used for mining HW focuses on this hash function processing. Before 2013 when there were not any miners, general GPUs (Graphic Processing Unit) and FPGAs (Field-Programmable Gate Array) were used. However semiconductors and miners for mining are used nowadays. Compared to PCs that use regular GPUs, processing speed of hash function of miners is about 1,000 times faster.

Согласно этим данным, Ли становится единственным южнокорейцем, чьё состояние в этом году оцениваются в 10 триллионов южнокорейских вон или выше.

Samsung chief earns some 4 tln won from stock rally

Samsung Electronics Chairman Lee Kun-hee has seen the value of his stock assets rise by nearly 4 trillion won (US$3.7 billion) this year thanks to a rally of the tech giant on the local bourse, a market tracker said Wednesday. 
According to CEO Score, Lee, who has been hospitalized since May 2014 after he suffered a heart attack, had 18.1 trillion won in stock holdings as of Friday, up 3.9 trillion won from a year earlier. 
Lee is the sole South Korean whose stock holdings are valued at 10 trillion won or more. 
He was followed by Suh Kyung-bae, the president of top cosmetics maker AmorePacific Corp., with 8.1 trillion won and Lee Jae-yong, Lee's only son and Samsung Electronics vice chairman, with 7.6 trillion won. 
The younger Lee has been in prison on bribery and other charges since February. In late August, he was handed down a five-year jail term for bribing Choi Soon-sil, a longtime friend and confidante of impeached former President Park Geun-hye, embezzling company money and hiding assets overseas. He is appealing the verdict.
Hyundai Motor Group Chung Mong-koo came next with 4.8 trillion won, trailed by Seo Jung-jin, chairman of biopharmaceutical firm Celltrion Inc., with 4.7 trillion won and SK Group Chairman Chey Tae-won with 4.6 trillion won. 
Seo saw the value of his stock holdings rise by about 4.5 trillion won this year, outstripping Samsung Electronics Chairman Lee, South Korea's richest man. 
The jump in Seo's stock assets came on the listing of Celltrion Healthcare and the planned move of Celltrion to the main stock market from the tech-laden KOSDAQ market early next year. 
The data also showed the value of stocks held by South Korea's 500 richest people standing at 159.2 trillion won as of Friday, up 28 percent from the start of the year. 
It accounted for 8.5 percent of the total stock market capitalization and was higher than the 20.5 percent gain in the benchmark stock index over the cited period.

Апелляция по делу наследника империи Samsung: прокуратура снова требует увеличть наказание Ли Джей-ёну до 12 лет лишения свободы

Прокуратура потребовала приговорить к 12 годам лишения свободы одного из богатейших бизнесменов Южной Кореи и фактического главу Samsung Electronics - предпринимателя Ли Джей-ёна - за якобы дачу взяток и присвоение средств, сообщают местные СМИ.
Высокий суд Сеула в среду получил соответствующий запрос от прокуратуры в рамках рассмотрения апелляции на предыдущее решение нижестоящего суда, который в августе приговорил Ли-младшего к 5-ти годам тюремного заключения.
Ожидается, что Высокий суд Сеула изучит этот запрос в течение ближайших нескольких недель.
По версии следствия, Ли Джей-ён и ещё 4 менеджера Samsung сфабриковали множество документов, чтобы скрыть взятки, перечисленные Чхве Сун Силь - подруге экс-президента Южной Кореи Пак Кын Хи - в обмен на покровительство руководства страны. Размеры этих взяток якобы исчислялись миллионами долларов США.
Следователи утверждали, что Ли Джей-ён рассчитывал на поддержку, которая позволила бы ему принять меры для беспрепятственного получения контроля над Samsung Group в случае смерти его отца Ли Кун-хи (богатейшего человека Южной Кореи, входящего в TOP50 мультимиллиардеров мира), отошедшего от дел по состоянию здоровья, но сохраняющего за собой пост председателя совета директоров Samsung.
В ходе разбирательств Ли-младший категорически отрицал свою вину. Он отметил, что не был знаком с Чхве Сун Силь до того момента, как разгорелся коррупционный скандал, а также не обсуждал ситуацию о потенциальной смене контроля в Samsung с бывшим президентом в ходе 4-х проведённых с нею встреч.
Тем не менее адвокаты Samsung не опровергали данные, что корпорация пожертвовала крупную сумму компаниям, контролируемым Чхве Сун Силь, на благотворительные цели. Представители Samsung ещё раз напомнили, что понятия не имели о том, что Чхве Сун Силь использует эти средства в корыстных интересах. 

Prosecutors keep 12-year prison term demand for Samsung heir

Prosecutors asked an appellate court on Dec. 27 to sentence Samsung Electronics Vice Chairman Lee Jae-yong to 12 years in prison for bribery and other crimes, maintaining their initial request for punishment from the lower court trial. 
The 49-year-old scion of South Korea‘s richest conglomerate received a five-year jail term on Aug. 25 after being convicted on five charges, including bribery, embezzlement and hiding assets overseas. 
He was found guilty of providing 8.82 billion won (US$8.2 million) in bribes to Choi Soon-sil, a longtime friend and confidante of former President Park Geun-hye, in connection with a massive influence-peddling scandal that led to Park’s ousting in March. 
Prosecutors also maintained their sentence demands for four top Samsung executives: 10 years each for Choi Gee-sung, former head of Samsung‘s now-disbanded control tower Future Strategy Office, and his former deputy, Chang Choong-ki, and seven years each for Park Sang-jin, a former president of Samsung Electronics, and another former president, Hwang Sung-soo. They were convicted of similar charges and sentenced to four years in prison or given suspended terms by the lower court.

CES 2018: намечается новое противостояние Samsung и LG, теперь уже в сфере операционных систем для телевизоров

Технопортал ETNews сообщает, что на открывающейся 9 января крупнейшей выставке потребительской электроники CES 2018 в американском Лас-Вегасе, ожидается очередное столкновение передовых решений от двух давних конкурентов - Samsung и LG.
На сей раз противостояние коснётся не только технических характеристик домашних устройств (в данном случае речь идёт о смарт-телевизорах), но и качества операционных систем, которые на них установлены.
В течение 2017 года соперники шли "ноздря в ноздрю", когда дело касалось сегмента премиальных телеприёмников в плане качества изображения. Однако в области программных решений подавляющее большинство ведущих экспертов высказывалось в пользу Samsung и его операционной платформы TIZEN.
На CES 2018 соревнование между Samsung Electronics и LG Electronics продолжится, так как оба производителя намерены представить значительно обновлённые операционные системы, расширяющие возможности аппаратов.
Samsung намерен представить радикально обновлённую TIZEN 4.0, а LG - WebOS 4.0.
TIZEN 4.0 была официально представлена в рамках форума TDC 2018 (TIZEN Developer Conference) в Сан-Франциско (май 2017), но первые продукты на этой версии будут выставлены именно в рамках CES 2018.
LG также частично обновила свою WebOS, но, как утверждает ETNews, не столь радикально как Samsung.
Главной особенностью обновлённых ОС станет их способность интегрироваться в экосистемы Интернета вещей (IoT) и от того, насколько успешно конкуренты справятся с этой задачей, во многом будут зависеть успешность их телевизионных подразделений в обозримой перспективе.
На сегодняшний день аналитики сходятся во мнении, что Samsung более последовательно и основательно подходит к решению этой задачи. Например, уже объявлено, что почти все девайсы этой марки (кроме смартфонов и планшетов серии Galaxy) к 2020 году будут переведены на единую операционную платформу TIZEN, что позволит организовать "бесшовное" безопасное соединение между всеми подключёнными к интернет-сети устройствами. Это открывает широчайшие возможности по дистанционному контролю и управлению домашним хозяйством (включая охранные системы и средства слежения за малолетними детьми), подключения к сервисам цифрового здравоохранения и так далее.
Ряд моделей смарт-телевизоров Samsung предыдущих поколений получат программное обновление до версии TIZEN 4.0, что уравняет их возможности с  актуальными устройствами 2018 года. Это позволит сопрягать телевизоры с устройствами, использующими передовые решения на базе интеллектуального голосового помощника Bixby (например, смарт-часы, смартфоны, смарт-акустику, холодильники серии Family Hub, а также различные бытовые приборы) и ещё больше расширит сферу применения таких девайсов.
LG движется в том же направлении, но её система "умного дома" (Samsrt Home) в настоящее время гораздо более фрагментирована, поскольку WebOS не охватывает все производимые соперником Samsung девайсы (напомним, что у Samsung в арсенале имеются даже TIZEN-смартфоны), а также использует голосовые помощники от разных поставщиков (например, Alexa от Amazon, Cortana от Microsoft или Google Assistant). Всё это, в итоге, ставит LG в зависимость от сторонних поставщиков софта, что вряд ли можно рассматривать как оптимальное решение для домашней IoT-экосистемы.

Samsung Electronics and LG Electronics to Compete Against Each Other Again with Their TV Operating Systems

Competitions between Samsung Electronics and LG Electronics based on their Smart TV operating systems (OS) are going to be reignited. They are both going to enhance their OS as they look to release their new products in 2018. If their OS focused on convenience of Smart TV in the past, new versions will focus on ‘connectivity’ that will form Smart Home environment. It is expected that their strategies that will differentiate next-generation technologies such as AI (Artificial Intelligence) will face off against each other.
According to industries on the 25th, Samsung Electronics and LG Electronics are going to carry out huge updates on their OS and apply their OS to their 2018 Smart TVs. Samsung Electronics and LG Electronics are going to apply TIZEN 4.0 and WebOS 4.0 to their Smart TVs respectively. Although Samsung Electronics’ TIZEN 4.0 was introduced in May, this will be the first time when it will be applied to Samsung Electronics’ TVs. LG Electronics also only partially improved convenience level of WebOS this year after upgrading the version of WebOS every year in the past. Various functions such as IoT (Internet of Things) will be upgraded for TVs that will be released in 2018.
Industries predict that ‘connectivity’ between devices that will establish Smart Home environment will be prepared through upgrades of their OS. In the past, they upgraded their OS so that it is little bit easier to use TVs. For example, older versions of their OS offered functions that save channels by using remote controls in order to quickly access video contents and TV applications and that automatically recommend channels that are similar to the ones that are being watched.
A need for OS that will control and manage connections between devices through IoT and voice recognition-based AI technologies has become an issue as they are being emphasized in a field of home appliances. An environment where home appliances that are located near a person control other devices through voice recognition is being demanded.
Samsung Electronics’ TIZEN 4.0 allows a Smartphone to control other devices through Samsung Connect. Besides TVs, it can also comprehensively control other kitchen and home appliances such as refrigerator, air conditioner, and washing machine. One can also monitor and analyze data through Cloud. LG Electronics is also expected to upgrade WebOS so that WebOS can strengthen connection and compatibility between devices and apply AI technologies. “Samsung Electronics and LG Electronics recently started to receive certifications from OCF (Open Connectivity Foundation), which is a standard for IoT, for various home appliances including TVs.” said a representative for an industry. “They are currently enhancing their OS so that IoT-standardized technologies can be applied.”
It is expected that Samsung Electronics and LG Electronics will link their OS to their AI speakers that are going to be pushed as regular businesses starting from 2018. Samsung Electronics is going to work with Harman and is planning to release AI speakers that are applied with Bixby during the first half of 2018. LG Electronics also worked with Google, Amazon, and Naver and introduced speakers that are applied with various AI platforms. Majority of industries believe that their OS will be developed so that they are optimized for voice recognition and AI functions.
“Their OS that are mostly applied to Smart TVs are also being applied to other home appliances such as digital signage, beam projector, refrigerator, and washing machine.” said a representative for an industry. “There is a high chance that competitions between Samsung Electronics and LG Electronics will escalate to other Smart home appliances.”
