Samsung и KAIST поспорили из-за технологии FinFet




Южнокорейские СМИ сообщили, что Samsung Electronics должен заплатить 400 миллионов долларов США лицензионному подразделению научно-исследовательского университета Кореи (KAIST) за нарушение патента, связанного с ключевыми полупроводниковыми технологиями. 
Федеральное жюри США в Техасе постановило, что корейский техногигант нарушил патент KAIST, связанный с FinFet - ключевой транзисторной технологией, используемой для производства мобильных процессоров, - и должен заплатить штраф, согласно отчёту Bloomberg от 16 июня.
Конкурирующие чипмейкеры Qualcomm и GlobalFoundries также были уличены в нарушениях патента, но, как сообщается, с них никаких выплат почему-то не потребовали. 
Samsung опровергает утверждения, что работал с KAIST над разработкой технологии FinFet, которую якобы впоследствии "присвоил" и отвергает претензии в нарушении патентных прав, оспаривая действие патента во время судебного разбирательства.

Представители KAIST IP US заявили, что в Samsung сначала отклонили исследование технологии FinFet, но изменили своё отношение, когда конкурирующая Intel начала лицензировать это изобретение и разрабатывать на его основе свои продукты.

Samsung ordered to pay US$400m to KAIST over semiconductor tech patent infringement

Samsung Electronics has reportedly been ordered to pay US$400 million to the licensing arm of Korea’s top science and research university KAIST over infringing a patent related to key semiconductor technology.
A US federal jury in Texas ruled that the Korean tech giant infringed KAIST’s patent related to FinFet - a key transistor technology used to produce processors for mobile phones - and should pay a fine, according to a Bloomberg report on June 16.
Chipmakers Qualcomm and GlobalFoundries were also found to have infringed the patent, but reportedly were not ordered to pay damages.
Samsung refuted that it worked with the Korean university to develop the technology, denied patent infringement and challenged the validity of the patent during the trial.
Looking ahead, the Korean electronics giant plans to “consider all options to obtain an outcome that is reasonable, including an appeal,” Samsung told Bloomberg in a statement.
The suit was filed in November 2016, by KAIST IP US, the university’s licensing arm which claimed the defendants have been infringing US Patent No. 6,885,055 that relates to FinFet. 
KAIST IP US had reportedly claimed that Samsung initially dismissed the FinFet technology research at first, but changed its attitude when rival Intel started licensing the invention and developing related products.
The case marks a clash between Korea’s top science and engineering institution and the country’s biggest tech company and conglomerate, which often work together for talent acquisition and technology innovation.
In the Texas jury decision, Samsung’s infringement was found to be “willful,” which means that the judge could raise the damages to award as much as three times the jury’s amount.

Как сообщает бизнес-портал The Investor, техногигант Samsung Electronics отчитался о размерах уплаченных налогов во всех странах мира, где присутствует корпорация. В общей сложности в 2017-м году эта сумма составила $13,6 миллиарда.
Представительства электронного подразделения конгломерата Samsung Group действуют в 73-х странах, а штат корпорации, как сообщалось на днях, насчитывает 320 тысяч человек.
Затраты Samsung Electronics на выплату налогов в 2017-м году увеличились сразу на 70% по сравнению с 2016-м, когда было заплачено 8,2 миллиарда долларов США. В 2015-м общая сумма налогов, выплаченных Samsung, составляла $7,2 миллиарда.
В отчёте Samsung указано, что правительство Южной Кореи получило 81% от уплаченной суммы, вто время как остальные азиатские страны — ещё 10%.
В прошлом году оборот корпорации составил 221 миллиард долларов, что на 18,6% больше, чем годом ранее. При этом на Южную Корею пришлось только 13% продаж Samsung, на Европу — 19%, Китай — 16%, а на Северную и Южную Америки — 34%.
Промышленные эксперты отмечают, что несмотря на то, что большую часть дохода Samsung Electronics получает за пределами своей страны, корпорация платит меньше всего налогов именно там. Впрочем, они почему-то не учитывают огромные суммы, которые Samsung вкладывает в постройку предприятий, институтов и прочей инфраструктуры за рубежом. К тому же техногигант выделяет большие средства на различные социальные и благотворительные цели.

Samsung spends W15tr on taxes globally

Samsung Electronics, which has been posting record-breaking earnings on the back of robust returns from the chip business, spent a whopping 15 trillion won (US$13.6 billion) to pay taxes around the globe last year, its business report showed on June 18.
The expenditure on taxes at home and abroad in 2017 represents a 70% increase from a year earlier, when the South Korean tech giant paid 8.9 trillion won in dues at home and abroad. The record-breaking amount posted last year nearly doubled from 7.8 trillion posted in 2015.
Samsung said the Korean government accounted for 81% of the amount, with other Asian countries accounting for 10%.
The tech giant posted 239.6 trillion won in sales in 2017, up 18.6% on-year. Its operating profit shot up 83.6 percent over the cited period to 53.6 trillion won. 
Korea took up 13% of the sales posted in 2017, followed by North and South America with 34%. Europe and the Commonwealth of Independent States accounted for 19% and China held 16%. 
Industry watchers said while Samsung Electronics had most of its sales overseas, it is still paying most of its taxes in Korea as it is headquartered here.

3GPP TSG #80 Plenary Meeting has approved the completion of the standalone (SA) Release 15 5G specifications. After the release of the 5G NR specifications for non-standalone (NSA) operation in Dec. 2017, another essential step of standardization of 5G has been successfully completed. Now, the whole industry is taking the final sprint towards 5G commercialization. The completion of SA specifications which complements the NSA specifications, not only gives 5G NR the ability of independent deployment, but also brings a brand new end-to-end network architecture, making 5G a facilitator and an accelerator during the intelligent information and communications technology improvement process of enterprise customers and vertical industries. New business models will be enabled and a new era where everything is interconnected will be opened up for both mobile operators and industrial partners.
More than 600 delegates from the world’s major telecom operators, network, terminals and chipset vendors, internet companies and other vertical industry companies have witnessed this historic moment for 5G.
