TIZEN-powered Samsung 2018 QLED TVs update adds FreeSync

Samsung has released a free firmware update for a number of its 2018 QLED TVs (it’s different from OLED) that enables the FreeSync adaptive frame synchronization technology. The option has been added to the TVs’ game mode menu, meaning that Xbox One S and X owners can take advantage of its ability to eliminate screen tearing during times where the system struggles to meet the maximum refresh rate of the display.
Frame synchronization is something that PC gamers have contended with for years, with V-Sync being the classic option for preventing the tearing that often occurs when the frames per second your graphics card is able to pump out doesn’t match the refresh rate of your display. G-Sync and FreeSync are more modern alternatives with far less of a performance overhead and as support grows on consoles and TVs, more gamers than ever can reap the benefits.
Although Samsung does sell FreeSync TVs, they are not something its entire range typically supports. As of firmware update 1103 though, it appears that more of its lineup than ever can now make use of it. According to Rtings, Samsung’s QLED Q6FN, Q7FN, Q8FN, Q9FN, and NU8000 all now support FreeSync technology. If you have your AMD graphics-equipped PC or an Xbox One S or X hooked up to one of those TVs, you should now be able to enjoy FreeSync.
To make use of the new FreeSync mode, you’ll need to head into the TV’s settings menu, followed by General, External Device Manager, Game Mode Settings and ultimately, select “FreeSync.” Set it to “On.” Options include “Ultimate,” which has a range of 48-120Hz, while “Basic,” supports 90-120Hz.
Samsung does warn that the mode isn’t necessarily perfect and there may be some noticeable discrepancies with brightness during FreeSync operation due to frequency variation. It also highlights that at this time, the only resolution supported for FreeSync is 1080P.
While that is a disappointment considering many of the newly FreeSync supporting TVs are natively set to 4K resolution, this does add another notable feature to the QLED displays. As PCPer points out, it makes Samsung one of the only companies selling FreeSync TVs with support for high-end HDR, too.

Samsung expands recruitment of IT experts in U.S.

Samsung Electronics Co. recently expanded recruitment of technology experts in the United States with career experiences in rival firms, industry sources said Thursday, reflecting the company's bid to penetrate deeper into emerging business areas.
Samsung's U.S.-based arms, such as Samsung Research America and Samsung NEXT, have recently been inviting prominent IT experts as the South Korean tech giant is speeding up efforts to build up new growth engines, such as artificial intelligence.
Samsung NEXT, which focuses on making investments in startups, recently announced that it hired Dane Howard, who has experience as the display designer of German carmaker BMW, as the new global head of design & product experience.
"Samsung NEXT represents the best of a startup culture with the support and resources of a big company. I'm joining a team that has a startup mindset and DNA, leveraging their deep relationships with startup communities and veteran product leaders," Howard said in a statement released by the company.
Travis Bogard, who formerly worked for the world's largest ride-hailing application Uber as the global general manager, is also one of the experts who recently joined Samsung NEXT.
Samsung Research America also invited Larry Heck, who participated in the development of Microsoft Corp.'s Cortana personal assistant program, for the company's AI technology research.
Samsung Electronics Vice Chairman Lee Jae-yong, who is also set to become the new head of the country's top conglomerate Samsung, has been making various moves to develop future growth engines, including making investments in startups and seeking mergers and acquisitions.
Industry watchers said Samsung's efforts to recruit experts with experience in the emerging industries reflect its willingness to bolster its overall competitiveness in cutting-edge areas.

Seoul shares end lower on summit cancellation

SEOUL, May 25 (Yonhap) - Seoul shares ended lower Friday as the abrupt cancellation of the U.S.-North Korea summit weighed on investor sentiment despite gains in technology stocks. The won rose against the dollar.
The benchmark Korea Composite Stock Price Index (KOSPI) fell 5.21 points, or 0.21 percent, to 2,460.80. Trade volume was moderate at 643.14 million shares worth 8.894 trillion won (US$8.3 billion) changing hands, with decliners outnumbering advancers 691 to 148.
Individuals dumped a net 478 billion won worth of stocks, offsetting a net buying of 457 billion won by institutions and foreigners.
"Stocks related to inter-Korean economic cooperation fell sharply due to the summit cancellation. But foreign purchases of technology stocks kept the index from falling further," Daishin Securities analyst Park Choon-young said.
In particular, construction stocks led declines, with Hyundai Engineering & Construction plunging 9.78 percent to 60,900 won, Kumho Engineering & Construction declining 12.09 percent to 12,000 won and Samsung Engineering falling 2.12 percent to 18,450 won.
Auto stocks declined further following reports that the U.S. government is considering imposing 25 percent tariffs on imported vehicles. Top carmaker Hyundai Motor fell 0.71 percent to 139,000 won and Kia Motors shed 1.38 percent, closing at 32,250 won.
Foreign buying of technology shares helped offset the declines in builders. Market bellwether Samsung Electronics jumped 2.53 percent to 52,700 won and No. 2 chipmaker SK hynix climbed 0.63 percent to 95,200 won.
On Thursday, U.S. President Donald Trump announced he was calling off the June 12 meeting with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, citing the latter's "tremendous anger and open hostility." The cancellation came just hours after the North demolished its nuclear test site in front of international journalists.
The local currency closed at 1,078.00 won against the U.S. dollar, up 1.60 won from the previous session.
Bond prices, which move inversely to yields, ended lower. The yield on three-year Treasurys rose 0.7 basis point to 2.198 percent, and the return on benchmark five-year government bonds climbed 0.2 basis point to 2.482 percent.
