Counterpoint: Samsung Galaxy S9 Plus becomes the best selling model surpassing iPhone X

According to the latest research from Counterpoint’s Market Pulse, Samsung’s Galaxy S9 series became the best seller globally, pushing Apple’s iPhone X to the third spot. The sales of Galaxy S9 series improved, driven by performance in APAC and NAM.
Xiaomi continues to make its presence felt in the top selling smartphones globally and grabbed the sixth and the eighth position with its Redmi 5A and Redmi 5 Plus / Note 5. This is the first time Xiaomi grabbed two positions within the top ten model list. Xiaomi grew both in China and India due to its affordable smartphones.
*Apple declined month on month due to seasonality. Apple continues to dominate the global best-selling smartphone models occupying five spots in the list.
*Demand of Apple iPhone 7 remains strong in APAC and NAM regions.
*Samsung price cuts on older Galaxy S8 series along with aggressive marketing and cashback offers, easy EMI’s amongst other factors drove sales for premium flagships.
*Top ten bestsellers are skewed either towards the premium segment or the entry level segment.

IHS Markit: iPhone X Led Global Smartphone Unit Shipments in Q1 2018

As global smartphone shipments reached 345.5 million units in the first quarter of 2018, Apple iPhone X was the leading model, with 12.7 million units shipped. According to business information provider IHS Markit, iPhone 8 ranked second, shipping 8.5 million units, followed by the Samsung Galaxy Grand Prime Plus, iPhone 8 Plus and Galaxy S9 Plus.
“Apple has secured the first and second ranking for the most-shipped smartphone model for many years,” said Jusy Hong, director of consumer devices, for IHS Markit. “The iPhone 7 Plus and iPhone 7 ranked first and second in the first quarter last year. Apple and Samsung maintained the same ranking as last year — replacing existing models with the latest models from this year.”
However, overall shipment volume of new models declined for Apple this year. The company shipped 35.6 million combined units of iPhone 7 Plus and iPhone 7 in the first quarter of 2017, but the combined shipment volume of this year's top two models declined to 21.2 million units. “Although Apple’s newest model shipment volume declined, the company announced good earnings in the first quarter, mainly because of price increases in the iPhone 8 series and the super-premium price of the iPhone X,” Hong said.
The number of sale-priced iPhone models is on the rise, which means Apple is selling more older models. To increase the share of its latest models in the total iPhone sales volume, Apple is likely to expand its iPhone X form factor to new three new models, which are expected to launch in the second half of this year, including two models with AMOLED displays and one with an LCD panel. “Manufacturers are keen on displays, because they are a visible upgrade that can be easily monetized with consumers,” Hong said. “These upgrades will also increase Apple’s share of new models this year.”
The latest flagship models of Samsung’s Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9 Plus ranked fifth and seventh, respectively, in the quarterly “Smartphone Model Market Tracker” from IHS Markit. Samsung released its new flagship models in March this year, while its earlier models were released in April 2017. The most-shipped smartphone model from Samsung is the Galaxy Grand Prime Plus, a low-tier smartphone released in November 2016. This model was the second most-shipped smartphone model in 2017 and it continues to sell well this year.
Chinese smartphone manufacturers have grown their global smartphone market share. However, few individual models from these manufacturers reach comparable scale with Apple and Samsung models. Delay of new model releases from Huawei, Xiaomi and Vivo is one reason there aren’t any smartphone models from Chinese manufacturers in the top 10 list.

Forbes: South Korea has 45 billionaires, with Samsung head Lee Kun-hee topping the list

South Korea Rich List saw a record number of billionaires. There are now 45 billionaires on this year’s list, up from 38 a year ago. The complete list can be found here and in the June issue of Forbes Asia and in the July issue of Forbes Korea.
The upbeat diplomatic news and the easing of tensions between North and South have helped South Korea’s businesses and markets. The benchmark KOSPI rose 15% in the 13 months since the last ranking, while the technology-heavy KOSDAQ index climbed 40%. As a result, 31 of South Korea’s 50 richest saw higher net worths, while only 12 fortunes fell.
Retaining the top spot is Samsung Chairman Lee Kun-Hee, who has led the list for 10 consecutive years. His net worth rose to US$20.6 billion, from $16.8 billion a year ago. His son, Jae Y. Lee who is Vice Chairman of Samsung Electronics, also made the list at No. 3 with a net worth of $7.9 billion. Biopharmaceutical entrepreneur Seo Jung-Jin (No. 2, $11 billion) is this year’s biggest gainer as his wealth surged 478%. He catapulted to the No. 2 spot, adding a staggering $9.1 billion to his net worth. Celltrion Healthcare, a marketing subsidiary of Seo’s Celltrion, launched an initial public offering last July and now boasts a market capitalization of $13 billion. Meanwhile, Celltrion switched the trading in its shares from the KOSDAQ to the main board of the Korea Exchange, putting it in the KOSPI. The stock has tripled in 13 months as three of its biosimilar drugs, Truxima, Herzuma and Remsima, which seek to treat lymphoma, breast cancer, arthritis and Crohn's disease, expanded their market share.
Suh Kyung-Bae, Chairman and CEO of cosmetics giant Amorepacific takes the No. 4 spot, as his fortune rose to $7.6 billion this year.
Gaming has long been a national obsession in South Korea, and this year’s list features six billionaire game developers. Two gaming entrepreneurs in particular, enjoyed a robust year. Kim Jung-Ju (No. 5, $7.1 billion) saw his net worth rise by 137%, as shares in his Tokyo-traded company Nexon surged after posting a 175% jump in net income in 2017. Bang Jun-Hyuk (No. 9, $2.9 billion) of mobile gaming outfit Netmarble also saw his net worth climb, up 103%. Netmarble went public in May 2017 and raised $2.3 billion.
South Korea emerged as the world’s third-largest market for trading bitcoin last year, the year of cryptocurrency. The country sprouted three of the top five exchanges for Ethereum, accounting for between 35% to 40% of the coin’s global trading volume. Seven members of the list including Kim Jung-Ju (No. 5), Kwon Hyuk-Bin (No. 8, $4.3 billion), Bang Jun-Hyuk (No. 9) and Kim Beom-Su (No. 13, $2.6 billion) have been busy investing in cryptocurrencies and blockchain, the technology underlying the digital tokens.
Making his debut on the list is new billionaire Kenny Park (No. 36, $1.16 billion) of handbag maker Simone, who is featured on the cover of the June issue of Forbes Asia. Simone - named after his wife’s nickname - churns out 30 million handbags and small leather goods every year. The privately held company generated $120 million in net income and $940 million in revenue last year.
There are three other newcomers on this year’s list. Among them are Park Yeon-Cha (No. 11, $2.75 billion) of Taekwang Industrial, a major supplier to Nike, and Kim Dae-Il (No. 42, $1.05 billion) of game developer Pearl Abyss. Lee Sang-Rok (No. 49, $930 million) also makes his debut after selling his shares in cosmetics company Carver Korea, best known for its AHC skincare line. In a deal worth $2.7 billion, Unilever now owns 95.4%.
This year’s list also sees two returnees, namely Shin Dong-Guk (No. 32, $1.2 billion) of Hanmi Pharmaceuticals and Kim Nam-Goo (No. 44, $1.02 billion) of Korea Investment Holdings.

Android (Android Go).

The new TIZEN-powered smartphone from Samsung is likely to be introduced in August 2018

According to some information coming from India, Samsung can introduce a new smartphone on the operating system TIZEN. Most likely it will use the latest version of TIZEN 4.0 and differ for the better in comparison with the previous budget models. Presumably the new smartphone will be called Samsung Z5. The last smartphone based on TISEN OS was released more than a year ago. It was Samsung Z4, which used the version of TIZEN 3.0.
If rumors about the new smartphone are confirmed, it means that the South Korean techgiant remains committed to its strategy of total transition to a single operating platform for all products of this brand.
