LG's Innotek division will produce a "periscope camera" for Apple, while Samsung Electro-Mechanics, also interested in supplying such components for the iPhone, will focus on collaborating with Samsung Electronics.
LG Innotek has begun developing a foldable ("periscope") camera for Apple, ETNews reports. This will be a task set in Apple's plans for next year, for which a separate development team has been formed. The new camera is expected to be installed in the 2022-2023 iPhone models. By this time, the manufacturer will have to solve a number of technical problems. Innotek, Apple's largest optical module partner, will work with the Cupertino-based corporation on this.
For the first time, the periscope camera was used in smartphones Samsung Electronics (Galaxy S20 Ultra series), released in January last year.
Samsung Electronics became the owner of the basic technology for periscope cameras after it bought the Israeli company CorePhotonics. Later Samsung Electro-Mechanics has developed and released a foldable camera module based on CorePhotonics patents. Since Samsung was seen as the owner of the main periscope camera technologies, the possibility of cooperation with Apple was regarded by observers as the most likely. But in the end, Samsung Electro-Mechanics began supplying optical modules for standard cameras to Apple, while industry observers focused on whether both Korean vendors would be able to win contracts for the supply of periscope cameras.
However, cooperation between Samsung and Apple did not work out due to fierce competition between them in the premium mobile devices market. Although Samsung Electro-Mechanics was interested in supplying for Apple, they still preferred cooperation with Samsung Electronics, since they are part of one conglomerate and are strategic partners. An industry spokesman said, "If the camera modules for direct competitors are supplied by the same company, it becomes very difficult to tell them apart. Since the camera is one of the most important components of a modern smartphone, each brand would like to have its own technology and distinctive features."
Despite the fact that Samsung Electro-Mechanics' deal with Apple did not materialize, it is likely that due to the effect of market expansion, the leading South Korean conglomerate will increase the supply of periscope cameras. The iPhone has a strong impact on the global smartphone business, so other manufacturers are likely to follow this trend and adopt technology or components that Apple has endorsed.
