Samsung может купить тайваньскую PlayNitride, работающей над технологией micro-LED

Как сообщает южнокорейский бизнес-портал The Investor со ссылкой на анонимные отраслевые источники, Samsung намерен приобрести тайваньскую компанию PlayNitride.
PlayNitride была создана в 2015-м году и занимается разработкой технологии микросветодиодов (micro-LED).
Как предполагается, Samsung может использовать технологию от PlayNitride в производстве дисплеев для гарнитур виртуальной реальности. Впрочем, это решение может также найти применение в создании телевизоров нового поколения, способных заменить ныне существующие OLED и QLED.
Предположительно сумма сделки составит порядка $150 миллионов.
Как говорят специалисты, технология micro-LED позволит выпускать дисплеи, превосходящие OLED-дисплеи по яркости и энергоэффективности. Более того, эти дисплеи дешевле в производстве. Тем не менее путь micro-LED в серию пока связан с рядом технологических сложностей. На доводку решений от PlayNitride ориентировчно понадобится 2-3 года. Поэтому коммерческое применение micro-LED должно быть освоено примерно в 2020-м.

Samsung may acquire Taiwan’s PlayNitride

Samsung Electronics is reportedly seeking to take over PlayNitride, a Taiwanese micro-LED maker, for an estimated US$150 million, according to Israel-based publication OLED-info. 
With the possible acquisition, the report said, the Korean tech giant aims to develop virtual reality devices and TVs based on micro-LED, a new display technology that is more energy efficient and durable while boasting higher picture contrast than the current OLED.
The micro-LED display is made of conventional but microscale diodes forming individual display pixels. 
The technology has recently been thrust into the spotlight as Apple is reportedly considering using the display for its new devices, including Apple Watch. The iPhone maker took over a micro-LED tech developer LuxVue in 2014. 
“Samsung appears to be trying to catch up with Apple through the possible acquisition,” an industry told The Investor on condition of anonymity. 
Samsung declined to comment on the report. 
Industry watchers, however, say the technology’s immediate adoption would not come anytime soon even though top display makers such as LG Display have continued related research work. 
“It will take at least five years for the micro-LED technology to be adopted for devices,” another source said. 
“If commercialized, it could replace other up-to-date display technologies such as OLED and QLED.”
