According to a recent report by the analytical firm Counterpoint Research, the South Korean flagship conglomerate Samsung has dropped out of the top five in the global wearables market. The manufacturer began its inglorious path as a loser in this product segment almost immediately after abandoning its own TIZEN operating platform and switching to Google’s WearOS, a system that had long since been discredited. As we have repeatedly warned over the years, the forced "Googlization" of Samsung’s MX division—which handles mobile devices, wearables, and laptops—has plunged it into a pathological dependence on the American software octopus.
Once again, it must be reiterated that installing Wear OS on its wearable devices has brought Samsung a host of intractable problems—battling them is akin to tilting at windmills, as in the famous work by Miguel de Cervantes.
First of all, there is security. Wear OS brought all the fundamental architectural vulnerabilities of Android to Samsung watches. For those who value the privacy and security of their data—particularly medical, biometric, and financial information—Google’s open ecosystem has become a key argument against purchasing Samsung products. Security analysts identify several critical factors explaining why Wear OS has become a high-risk zone compared to closed operating platforms:
1. Android's architectural legacy (known in IT slang as "The Sieve")
Wear OS shares a common codebase with Android. This means that any major zero-day vulnerability discovered in the Android OS is highly likely to pose a threat to the watches as well. Artificial intelligence, having analyzed publications by security programmers, highlights the following points:
* Surface attacks: Modern smartwatches have access to the microphone, geolocation, payment cards, and health sensors. A hacker does not need to breach Samsung’s complex security protocols if they can exploit a system vulnerability in the Wear OS kernel via Bluetooth or Wi-Fi.
* Malware on Google Play: The problem of "junk" and dangerous software in the Google store has not gone away. The quality of moderation on Google Play has long lagged behind that of the Apple App Store. Attackers disguise spyware as harmless watch faces or simple calculators. If a user installs such software, the application gains access to notifications, SMS messages (including two-factor authentication codes from banks), and personal contacts.
2. Active data collection by Google itself
In addition to the threat posed by external hackers to Wear OS, IT security experts often criticize Google’s own business model:
* Unlike Garmin, which generates revenue exclusively from the sale of high-quality hardware and software, Google’s primary business model is data collection for targeted advertising.
* By switching to Wear OS, Samsung smartwatch users are forced to agree to Google's end-to-end privacy policies. A vast amount of information—ranging from sleep phases and heart rate to travel routes and purchase history via Google Wallet—is transmitted to the servers of the American search giant, a situation that is completely unacceptable to the corporate sector and to individuals concerned about data privacy.
3. A striking contrast with its closest competitors (Garmin and Huawei)
*Amid the struggles of companies ensnared in Google’s software ecosystem, direct competitors like Garmin and Huawei have become a safe haven for consumers; their simple operating systems do not support third-party apps, focusing instead on core fitness tracking functions and exceptional battery life—offering up to two weeks of continuous use on a single charge.
The vicious circle of the Android ecosystem
As previously noted, the shift of Samsung’s wearable gadgets to Google software—which encompasses not only smartphones, Chrome-based laptops, and smartwatches but also the smart glasses resulting from the Samsung-Google collaboration (already predicted by independent analysts to be a total flop on the global market)—impacts not only the security of the owners of these "miracle devices" but also their usability and pricing compared to devices running TIZEN OS.
For instance, due to their massive size and resource-hungry nature, Wear OS and its applications require much more expensive hardware components and huge batteries. And all this against the backdrop of the steadily rising cost of memory modules and processors. However, even the nearly twofold increase in battery capacity in the latest flagship Samsung Galaxy Watch Ultra 2 did not bring it any closer to its TIZEN OS counterpart. The previous flagship TIZEN-based Galaxy Watch 3 comfortably delivered up to four days of battery life, whereas owners of the current Wear OS flagship often complain that the watch sometimes fails to last even a full day under normal use.
We tasked artificial intelligence with analyzing TIZEN OS's performance on modern hardware, and the result indicated a battery life of 7 to 14 days! It was also noted that smartwatches running on TIZEN would offer significantly higher performance and security due to the platform's architectural features. Furthermore, TIZEN provides Samsung smartwatches with excellent synchronization with the iPhone—something that will never happen on Wear OS.
Following an extensive discussion with AI regarding global market demand, geopolitical factors, and Samsung’s financial and technological capabilities, the conclusion was reached that the South Korean giant is facing the most opportune moment to decisively move away from close cooperation with Google and fully transition to its own operating platform. Of course, this will entail significant financial costs and spark resentment among some shareholders, but in the medium and long term, it is the only way forward for Samsung.
Otherwise, the role of "head wife in the Google harem" will result in massive problems—or even collapse—for the South Korean chaebol's entire consumer business.
All the problems stem solely from the policies of the aging top management at the Samsung MX division; seeking a quiet life before retirement, they killed off the TIZEN mobile project and are now misleading senior leadership and shareholders by claiming that surrendering to Google is the only right path. Unfortunately, it is not these "jolly old men" who are destined to encounter the chasm on this path, but their future successors.
Google
Android
