Finding out How the New Samsung Notebook Odyssey Keeps Its Cool

Perhaps one of the hardest missions for gaming laptop users to tackle is overheating. Some even say that heat itself is the enemy, as it can slow down gaming performance and become the critical difference between winning and losing.
On May 16, Samsung Electronics released the new Samsung Notebook Odyssey in the United States. Loaded with a dual cooling system to maximize heat-dispensing capacity, it has cool specifications such as the 8th Generation Intel Core i7 processor with six cores, NVIDIA® GeForce RTX™ 2060 graphics card and others. Samsung Newsroom looked into the updated Notebook Odyssey with a thermal imaging camera to see how it deals with a heated gaming session.

Formidable Dual Cooling and Penta-Heat Pipe

Let’s explore the latest Samsung Notebook Odyssey’s outstanding cooling system. On the bottom of the laptop, users will find a sophisticated dual cooling system that ensures efficient heat control.
The Notebook Odyssey has two cooling fans that dispense heat while absorbing the air from outside. There are 83 blades in each fan in the new Notebook Odyssey – 2.9 times more than in the previous model.
Moreover, the updated Notebook Odyssey creates an airflow that is 15 percent stronger by reducing the thickness of the blades by a third (0.25㎜). This is how the Notebook Odyssey ensures the best performance of the laptop by removing internal heat, while quickly absorbing fresh air on the top and the bottom.

Thermal Imaging Shows the Samsung Notebook Odyssey at Work

Some may wonder whether a laptop can address heating issues at the same level as a desktop. So Samsung Newsroom played a first-person shooter video game “Battlefield V” on the Samsung Notebook Odyssey to put all doubts to rest. One of the first things we examined was the System Status Dashboard, which allows users to check the Graphics Processing Unit (GPU) temperature, Frame Per Second (FPS), CPU temperature and other aspects while playing games in real time.
The temperature of the GPU and the CPU stood at 72℃ and 81℃ respectively (above, left). We also measured the external temperature of the laptop with a thermal imaging camera to gauge the level of heat the user might feel. The hottest part was the center of the hinge (between the screen and keyboard) which was 26.8℃ (above, right). The highest temperature recorded was in the user’s left hand, which peaked at 31.2℃ and is represented in white in the picture taken by the thermal imaging camera.
While playing the game for about 30 minutes, the temperature of the GPU and CPU peaked at 79℃ and 91℃ respectively (refer to the left picture above). The thermal imaging camera recorded a maximum temperature of 34.2℃ at the center of the keyboard, which is the most frequently used area. While the laptop generates a certain amount of heat after this time, it had a minimal impact on gameplay as the heat was localized to the center of the keyboard.
Thanks to its portability, if a user has to move when gaming, they can close their Notebook Odyssey and carry it with just one hand. Therefore, it is important to check the temperature of the laptop’s back and the heat remaining on the table through a thermal imaging camera. The peak temperature was 34.3℃ (above, left) on the back center of the new Notebook Odyssey after playing the game. The edges of the laptop were far cooler than the middle. After removing the laptop, the remaining heat on the table was 28℃ (above, right) which is cool enough that the user can touch the table with his or her bare hand.
Another reason why users of the new Samsung Notebook Odyssey don’t feel the heat is because of the laptop’s unique ventilation system. The laptop is designed to draw cool air in from its bottom and the keyboard and then expel warm air through the back and sides, so that the heat doesn’t reach the touchpad or the user’s face.

A Shortcut Key Ushers in a Whole New World: Odyssey Mode

Another exclusive feature of the updated Notebook Odyssey is Odyssey Mode. Users can save settings presets in advance under different profiles for various types of games and press Fn and F11 simultaneously to launch Odyssey Mode. Users can also toggle a number of other features and options, including Beast Mode, Black Equalizer, Dolby Atmos, settings to optimize resolution for the game genre, and the Windows key and touchpad.
Beast Mode enhances the desktop-like performance of the NVIDIA® GeForce RTX™ 2060 graphics card. The FPS (refer to the upper right of the picture above) ranged 80 to 90 before starting Beast Mode. If a user enables Beast Mode in the middle of playing a game, they will notice an increase in FPS, making movements on the display seem livelier.
Black Equalizer allows users to control the black levels of the display from 0 to 100 percent. They can clearly see the differences between 20 percent (basic mode), 60 percent (profile 1) and 90 percent (profile 2). Users are able to adjust the shade and brightness to their comfort, helping them to uncover enemies hidden in the game. By modulating black levels according to the different backgrounds in the game – such as canyons, plains, sky – users might be able to improve their gameplay.

Пока производители мобильных компьютеров стараются вести основную игру на рынке дорогих ноутбуков, которые многим не по карману, Samsung неожиданно представил компактный и привлекательный Windows-лэптоп Notebook Flash, который сравним по цене с недорогими девайсами на Chrome OS.
В рамках выставки CES 2019 южнокорейский техногигант анонсировал бюджетный мобильный компьютер Notebook Flash, выделяющийся на фоне многочисленных игровых и профессиональных моделей. Это сугубо бюджетное решение на основе базовых процессоров Intel, у которого, тем не менее, есть ряд интересных особенностей, присущих более дорогим лэптопам.
По сути Notebook Flash – это современная интерпретация печатной машинки – даже кнопки клавиатуры имеют соответствующий дизайн. Сама клавиатура островковая, причём слегка уменьшенное расстояние между клавишами, с учетом их формы, должно способствовать быстрому набору текста.
Но стильная клавиатура – не единственная особенность внешнего исполнения Samsung Notebook Flash. Здесь также в наличии тонкие, в сравнении с другими бюджетными ноутбуками, рамки экрана, а сам корпус имеет оригинальное покрытие из качественного пластика, имитирующего тканевую стркутуру. Это решение напоминает устройства Microsoft серии Surface с покрытием из алькантары.
Необычная текстура поверхности Notebook Flash предотвращает неприятное заляпывание корпуса, а массивное крепление верхней крышки, заменившее собой распространённые в базовом сегменте рынка небольшие пластиковые кронштейны, повышает общую прочность конструкции.
Samsung обещает продавать Notebook Flash по цене от $275 за минимальную конфигурацию. Но эта стоимость актуальна для рынка США, поскольку в России этот любопытный деайс вряд ли появится.
В Америке продажи лэптопа стартуют уже 15 января. Поначалу купить его будет можно в фирменных магазинах Samsung, а также на Amazon.
В основу Samsung Notebook Flash заложена аппаратная платформа Intel Gemini Lake. В данном случае она представлена двумя процессорами: Celeron N4000 в базовой конфигурации (2 ядра, частота до 2,6 ГГц, графика Intel UHD 600) и Pentium Silver N5000 в более дорогой версии, цена которой пока не сообщается. Этот процессор содержит 4 вычислительных ядра с тактовой частотой до 2,7 ГГц и встроенную видеокарту Intel UHD 605.
Несмотря на сравнительно невысокую стоимость, мобильный PC по умолчанию поставляется с Full HD-дисплеем. Егол диагональ составляет 13,3 дюйма, а в его верхнюю рамку встроена вэб-камера с разрешением HD (720p).
В Notebook Flash интегрированы 4Гб оперативной и 64Гб встроенной флэш-памяти. Стандарт ОЗУ не уточняется, а в качестве накопителя применяется модуль eMMC. Ноутбук оборудован гигабитным модулем Wi-Fi 802.11ac и аккумулятором на 10 часов автономной работы. Также на корпусе присутствует сканер отпечатков пальцев для предотвращения кражи информации. Дактилоскоп размещён рядом с правым Shift и «замаскирован» под дополнительную кнопку клавиатуры.
Все интерфейсные разъёмы у Notebook Flash выведены на боковые торцы. В наличии имеются вход под внешнюю акустику и наушники с микрофоном, слот под накопители microSD, два порта USB-C, по одному USB 3.0 и USB 2.0 и выход HDMI для подключения к монитору или телевизору.
Все без исключения комплектации Samsung Notebook Flash поставляются с предустановленной ОС Microsoft Windows 10 Home. Это полноценная настольная операционная система, без какого-либо урезания функционала.
Предложив ноутбук по цене китайского смартфона среднего класса, Samsung рассчитывает в первую очередь на конкуренцию с хромбуками (Chromebook) под управлением Google Chrome OS. Большинство моделей хромбуков базового уровня имеют схожую стоимость, но ограниченный набор функций за счёт специфики ПО. Если лэптопы на Chrome OS ориентированы, в основном, на образовательный сегмент, то у Samsung Notebook Flash гораздо более широкая целевая аудитория. На его стороне – универсальность Windows 10, позволяющая запускать самые разные программы без каких-либо проблем с совместимостью. Впрочем, Google немекает, что может разрешить устанавливать на хромбуки операционную систему Microsoft, но не одновременно с Chrome OS, а вместо неё – пользоваться двумя системами на одном лэптопе владельцы не смогут.
Помимо доступного Notebook Flash, Samsung привёз на CES 2019 и профессиональный мобильный PC Notebook 9 Pro. Это трансформер с сенсорным Full HD-экраном, способным вращаться на 360 градусов и поддерживающим работу с фирменным стилусом Samsung S Pen. Ноутбук предложен в вариантах с экранами на 13,3 и 15,6 дюйма по диагонали, 8 или 16Гб ОЗУ, процессором Intel Core i7-7500U, SSD-накопителем ёмкостью 256Гб и операционной системой Windows 10 Home.

Сегодня на специальном пресс-брифинге в Сеуле представители Samsung рассекретили дизайн нового семейства ноутбуков, получивших название Flash. Новые портативные PC отличаются необычным визуальным решением, которое не пересекается с прежними линейками подобных устройств.
В частности, покрытие рабочей панели имитирует структуру ткани, а круглые кнопки выполнены в стиле клавиатуры печатной машинки. Иными словами, Flash действительно отличаются от других моделей на рынке. 
Компьютеры позволяют очень быстро загружать файлы по Wi-Fi со скоростью до 1,7 Гбит/с благодаря наличию беспроводного адаптера Intel последнего поколения. Также в наличии имеется сканер отпечатков пальцев, порт USB-C и  IPS-дисплей с диагональю 13,3 дюйма и Full HD-разрешением. Об аппаратной платформе в предварительном анонсе умалчивается, но с большой долей вероятности в компьютерах серии Flash используются процессоры Intel Core последнего поколения. Также, скорее всего, в аппаратах установлены SSD объёмом 128-512Гб и 8-16Гб ОЗУ.
В Южной Корее стоимость минимальной конфигурации определена в $715. Поступят ли Samsung Flash на зарубежные рынки, пока точно неизвестно. Но если учесть, что рекламный промо-ролик новинок появился на международном сайте корпорации, почти наверняка можно ожидать поставки в Северную Америку и некоторые другие регионы. 

Samsung Electronics showcases new laptop Flash

Samsung Electronics Co. on Monday introduced a new laptop named the Flash, which incorporates Intel Corp.'s latest wireless lan card for a faster Internet experience, along with a retro-style keyboard.
The South Korean tech giant said the new laptop boasts an Internet speed of up to 1.7 gigabytes per second, allowing users to download large files and enjoy high-resolution video content online smoothly through its 13.3-inch Full HD display. The product is customized for network services of KT Corp., South Korea's No. 2 mobile carrier.
The new Flash laptops, available in the colors white, charcoal and coral, also come with a unique look through the retro-looking keyboard, making them stand out from other rival products in the market.
Another notable feature of the latest device is the security system built under close cooperation with Microsoft Corp.
Running on the Microsoft Window 10 operating system, the laptop is installed with a fingerprint screening sensor. Samsung's secret folder also helps users keep confidential files safe and protected.
The Flash laptop also boasts improved connectivity with other devices and supports the Universal Flash Storage cards, which are five times faster in terms of reading speed compared with existing Micro SD cards.
Samsung said it was able to make a new laptop that boasts faster Internet and stronger security under cooperation with Intel, Microsoft and KT, and claimed the sleek design will especially attract millennial consumers.
The price tag of the Samsung Laptop Flash has been set at 810,000 won (US$715).

Samsung завершает подготовку к запуску новых серий портативных Windows-компьютеров, которые получили условное наименование «Notebook Flash». Они должны поступить в продажу в 1-м квартале 2019 года, а представлены публике в рамках выставки CES 2019, которая ежегодно проводится в Лас-Вегасе (США) в первой половине января.
Разумеется, параметры новых устройств ещё не раскрыты. Предположительно «Notebook Flash» должны заменить линейки среднебюджетных аппаратов Notebook 3 и Notebook 5. Скорее всего эти ноутбуки получат новейшие процессоры Intel, металлические корпуса, дисплеи с Full HD разрешением и несколько различных модификаций (только с  SSD или же комбинацию SSD+HDD).
Кроме того, в ближайшие месяцы южнокорейский техногигант должен представить новые модели Chromebook, работающих на операционной системе Chrome от Google.
В последние годы ноутбуки Samsung, помимо Южной Кореи, официально поставлялись в Северную Америку и на некоторые другие рынки.
В России продажи ноутбуков Samsung были прекращены из-за низкой рентабельности этого бизнеса, поскольку соревноваться с китайцами, захватившими 90% мирового рынка компьютеров среднего класса, становится всё сложнее.
Тем не менее, источник технопортала Androidinsider утверждает, что новые модели «Notebook Flash» должны быть доступны и в странах Евросоюза. Но до России они опять же вряд ли доберутся.

Samsung Working On New ‘Flash’ Line Of Windows Notebooks

Samsung is working on a new series of Windows laptops that it intends to advertise as the “Notebook Flash,” as suggested by a new trademark application reviewed by AndroidHeadlines. The price range of the upcoming product family remains uncertain but Samsung’s established product practices and IP activity patterns are indicative of higher-end devices that may launch as early as the first quarter of 2019. The company is understood to be planning to bring the upcoming notebook models to Europe and may end up opting for an even wider availability.
The Samsung Notebook Flash line may be a follow-up to the Notebook 3 and Notebook 5 models introduced by the South Korean tech giant in April. Both of those laptops utilized seventh- and eighth-generation Intel chips — depending on the configuration — and DDR4 RAM, as well as an HDD-SSD storage combo and screens with resolutions up to 1,920 by 1,080 pixels (FHD). While the Notebook Flash series could still end up being a mid-range or an entry-level affair, Samsung traditionally steered clear of those laptop price ranges due to the thin profit margins associated with them. For much the same reasons, the company doesn’t have a large selection of non-premium Chromebooks despite being a consistent supporter of the Chrome OS ecosystem. The chances of the Notebook Flash line being announced before the end of the year are slim because Samsung likely won’t be able to secure the trademark on that particular moniker until at least January.
Between the newly sighted Notebook Flash range and the upcoming Hopper Chromebook AndroidHeadlines discovered earlier this week, Samsung appears to be planning a continuation of its portable computing push in the near future. While it remains to be seen whether the company ends up offering the new laptops on a global level, it appears its notebook ambitions are still strong and remain an integral part of its consumer electronics plans.

В сегодняшнем пресс-релизе Samsung анонсировал портативные компьютеры Notebook 5 и Notebook 3, продажи которых в отдельных регионах начнутся в ближайшие недели.
Девайсы рассчитаны на выполнение повседневных задач и будут оснащаться процессорами Intel Core 7-го или 8-го поколения. В аппаратной части также используется ОЗУ DDR4, объём которой зависит от модификации устройства.
Семейство Notebook 3 включает модели с 14- и 15,6-дюймовым дисплеем. В первом случае разрешение составляет 1366×768 пикселей (формат HD), во втором случае также доступна панель с разрешением 1920×1080 точек (Full HD). Для старшей модели будет предлагаться графический ускоритель NVIDIA MX110 с 2Гб памяти (помимо интегрированного контроллера Intel).
Компьютеры серии Notebook 5 оснащены 15,6-дюймовым дисплеем Full HD с большим углом обзора и графическим ускорителем NVIDIA MX150 с 2 Гб памяти.
Все новинки могут комплектоваться жёстким диском и твердотельным накопителем. Аппаратная часть также включает вэб-камеру и адаптер беспроводной связи Wi-Fi 802.11ac, а ёмкость аккумуляторной батареи составляет 43 Вт·ч.
Notebook 3 с 14-дюймовым экраном имеет размеры 336,0×232,9×19,8 мм и весит 1,66 кг. Габариты модификации с 15,6-дюймовым дисплеем составляют 377,4×248,6×19,6 мм, вес — 1,97 кг. Модель Notebook 5 имеет размеры 377,4×248,6×19,9 мм, вес — 1,97 кг.
Устройство будет доступно на многих рынках, включая Северную и Южную Америку, некоторые страны Азии и Европы. В Россию, однако, ноутбуки Samsung, считающиеся одними из самых надёжных, давно не поставляются из-за повального увлечения местного населения дешёвой "китайщиной".

The Samsung Notebook 5 and Samsung Notebook 3 are powered to perform; with an Intel Core i7** (Quad Core) Processor, a dual storage system and NVIDIA GeForce graphics cards***, equipped with cutting edge hardware, delivering the very best experience for the casual gamer or general user.

Usability

Intended to fit the everyday computing needs of consumers – the Notebooks have a wide precision touchpad, full-sized keyboards with number pads, and ergonomically crafted keycaps for comfortable typing. With an anti-glare panel, and colors tuned by Samsung Color Engine for stunningly vibrant images and videos, both devices are built with precision in mind.

Availability

The devices will be available in select countries starting in April in Korea, with wider global releases including China and Brazil in Q2.
