According to preliminary reports, at the end of the 2nd quarter, all major divisions of the multinational conglomerate Samsung showed impressive results in terms of the level of margins of their business, with the exception of the mobile division, which is responsible for the development, production and sale of smartphones, tablets and smartwatches. According to a group of analysts from Refinitiv SmartEstimate, the operating profit of the world's leading manufacturer of memory chips and smartphones jumped to $ 10 billion. The skyrocketing 38% growth is attributable to higher chip prices as well as increased demand for consumer electronics.
Prices for DRAM chips, widely used in servers, smartphones and other computing devices, jumped 27% quarter-on-quarter, while prices for NAND flash chips, which serve the storage market, rose 8,6%, according to research firm Trendforce.
It is curious that the most profitable areas, in addition to the traditional semiconductor business, turned out to be those that use the proprietary operating platform TIZEN in their devices. These include smart TVs, smart monitors, laser video projectors, internet-connected home appliances, and various categories of professional devices including digital video walls, smart signs, electronic kiosks, and more.
As you can see, the policy of putting Samsung Mobile at the mercy of the software vendor Google with its variations of the long-discredited Android OS did not bring happiness to the top managers of this division. One can only wonder why these people continue to lead such an important business for Samsung for many years, although they bear the full responsibility for the disastrous results of recent years. Suffice it to recall the scandalous stories with the fires of the top-end smartphones of the Galaxy Note7 series, defective screens in the Galaxy Fold, terrible security problems with the Android platform, the insane campaign to transfer Galaxy smartwatches from TIZEN to WearOS, and much more.
The question of personal loyalty to the Lee family clan (founders and owners of a big shareholding in this largest chaebol) was likely critical, as the heir to the Samsung empire, under constant prosecution by South Korean leftist prosecutors, no longer had anyone to rely on. However, their advice to ditch their own operating platform TIZEN and their own services in favor of the insatiable predator Google, which has become an almost absolute monopoly in the mobile OS market, as we have already said many times in our information blog, in the future will play a fatal role in Samsung's defeat in this critical sector. Judging by the dynamics of sales, the tech giant is gradually losing its leadership positions, yielding to the American Apple in terms of marginality, and to the numerous "Chinese" led by Xiaomi to increase the volume of sales of mobile devices. Unfortunately, the option of a fall in the mobile business and a repetition of the fate of former competitors from LG Mobile, who have already buried this direction, is becoming more and more clearly visible.
Samsung spends huge amounts of money on the development of advanced mobile devices, while the Chinese use ready-made nodes, often produced at the facilities of the same Samsung. At the same time, they do not incur the same high R&D costs, which allows them to keep prices at a lower level. In addition, all Chinese businesses associated with external mobile expansion are actively supported by the ruling communist elite of the PRC, which is not going to abandon the strategy of global enslavement of the world with the help of its communication technologies. In place of the internationally sanctioned companies like Huawei and ZTE, second-tier manufacturers, which are secretly funded by the Chinese government, are quickly being promoted.
Against this background, the actions of Samsung Mobile's management look like absolute madness, since they decided to fight with Chinese counterparts, also using the operating platform and services from Google. If Samsung had implemented its original plans announced in 2014, then today at least 21% of mobile devices could run on TIZEN OS, and with a sufficient number of high-quality applications.
But now Samsung Mobile has fallen into a vicious circle that leads to a complete collapse: profits are constantly falling, which inevitably leads to a reduction in funding for the development of advanced hardware components and software. By refusing to use TIZEN and its own services, Samsung will only prolong the agony of its mobile division, which is totally dependent on Google. This will not happen tomorrow, but the trend is obvious and there is no way out of this situation.
Only a miracle can save the Samsung mobile business, which implies a total purge of the management staff of Samsung Mobile and a radical restructuring of the entire policy of this division, primarily in the field of creating its own software. Funding for the direction of mobile software should be increased tenfold and include the development of a single operating platform (TIZEN, or a completely new OS) for a large number of devices, which will further reduce the costs of creating applications. This is the only option for Samsung not to lose its mobile business.
Observers often ask the question: why Samsung, which has colossal revenues and recruits the most successful graduates of prestigious universities (both in South Korea and abroad), still cannot create a single operating platform and a set of quality services? Following elementary logic, one can come to an unambiguous conclusion: insufficiently competent top management and chronic underfunding of the software direction. In addition, there is an unjustified flirtation with investors, who have recently been paid increased dividends to the detriment of further business development.
While Apple, Google and even the Chinese Huawei have their own operating platforms and services, Samsung Mobile is destroying TIZEN with special frenzy and cynicism, throwing itself into the death embrace of a boa constrictor named Google/Android.
Thus, in the coming years, we will witness a dramatic development of events: either Samsung, at last, realizes the viciousness of the chosen path, or completely lose the mobile business, following in the footsteps of its compatriots from Pantech and LG.

К ним относятся смарт-телевизоры, смарт-мониторы, лазерные видеопроекторы, подключаемая к интернет-сети бытовая техника, а также различные категории устройств профессионального назначения, включая цифровые видеостены, смарт-вывески, электронные киоски и так далее.
Как видим, политика сдачи Samsung Mobile на милость софтверного поставщика Google с его вариациями давно дискредитировавшей себя ОС Android, не принесла счастья топ-менеджерам этого подразделения. Остаётся лишь удивляться, почему эти люди продолжают долгие годы возглавлять столь важный для Samsung бизнес, хотя на них лежит вся ответственность за провальные результаты последних лет. Достаточно вспомнить скандальные истории с возгораниями топовых смартфонов серии Galaxy Note7, дефектных экранов в Galaxy Fold, ужасных проблем с безопасностью платформы Android, безумной кампании по переводу смарт-часов Galaxy с TIZEN на WearOS и много чего ещё.
Вероятно, вопрос личной преданности семейному клану Ли (основателей и владельцев большого пакета акций этого крупнейшего чеболя) сыграл решающее значение, ибо находящемуся под постоянным уголовным преследованием со стороны южнокорейских прокуроров-леваков наследнику империи Samsung больше не на кого было опереться. Однако их советы по отказу от собственной операционной платформы TIZEN и собственных сервисов в пользу ненасытного хищника Google, ставшего почти абсолютным монополистом на рынке мобильных ОС, как мы уже неоднократно говорили в нашем информационном блоге, в будущем сыграют роковою роль в поражении Samsung в этом критически важном секторе. Судя по динамике продаж, техногигант постепенно сдаёт свои лидерские позиции, уступая американской Apple в плане маржинальности, а многочисленным "китайцам" во главе с Xiaomi по наращиванию объёмов реализации мобильных устройств. К сожалению, все отчётливее просматривается вариант падения мобильного бизнеса и повторение судьбы бывших конкурентов из LG Mobile, уже похоронивших это направление.
Samsung тратит гигантские средства на разработку передовых мобильных устройств, в то время как китайцы используют уже готовые узлы, часто производящиеся на мощностях того же Samsung. При этом они не несут таких же больших издержек на НИОКР, что позволяет держать цены на более низком уровне. Кроме того, все китайские бизнесы, связанные с внешней мобильной экспансией, активно поддерживаются правящей коммунистической верхушкой КНР, которая не собирается отказываться от стратегии глобального порабощения мира с помощью своих коммуникационных технологий. На место попавших под международные санкции компаний Huawei и ZTE быстро выдвигаются производители второго эшелона, которые тайно финансируются правительством Китая.
На этом фоне действия руководства Samsung Mobile выглядят абсолютным безумием, поскольку они решили сражаться с китайскими аналогами, также использующих операционную платформу и сервисы от Google. Если бы Samsung воплотил в жизнь свои первоначальные планы, провозглашённые в 2014-м году, то сегодня, по меньшей мере 21% мобильных устройств могли бы работать на TIZEN OS, причём с достаточным количеством качественных приложений.
Но сейчас Samsung Mobile попал в порочный круг, который ведёт к полному краху: прибыли падают, что неизбежно ведёт к сокращению финансирования разработок передовых аппаратных компонентов и ПО. Отказавшись от использования TIZEN и собственных сервисов, в Samsung лишь продлят агонию своего мобильного подразделения, находящегося в тотальной зависимости от Google. Произойдёт это не завтра, но тенденция очевидна и выхода из этой ситуации не просматривается. Спасти мобильный бизнес Samsung может только чудо, что подразумевает тотальную чистку управленческого состава Samsung Mobile и кардинальную перестройку всей политики этого подразделения, прежде всего в области создания собственного софта. Финансирование направления мобильного ПО должно быть увеличено в десятки раз и включать разработку единой операционной платформы (TIZEN, либо абсолютно новой ОС) для большого количества устройств, что в дальнейшем снизит издержки при создании приложений. Это единственно возможный вариант для Samsung не потерять свой мобильный бизнес.
Наблюдатели часто задаются вопросом: почему Samsung, имеющий колоссальные доходы и набирающий в свой штат самых успешных выпускников престижных ВУЗов (как в Южной Корее, так и за рубежом), до сих пор не может создать единую операционную платформу и набор качественных сервисов? Следуя элементарной логике, можно прийти к однозначному выводу: недостаточно компетентный топ-менеджмент и хроническое недофинансирование софтверного направления. Кроме того, налицо неоправданное заигрывание с инвесторами, которым в последнее время выплачиваются повышенные дивиденды в ущерб дальнейшему развитию бизнеса.
В то время как у Apple, Google и даже у китайской Huawei имеются собственные операционные платформы и сервисы, в Samsung Mobile с особым остервенением и цинизмом уничтожают TIZEN, бросившись в смертельные объятия удава по имени Google/Android.
Таким образом, в ближайшие годы мы станем свидетелями драматического развития событий: либо в Samsung, наконец, осознают порочность выбранного пути, либо полностью лишаться мобильного бизнеса, пойдя по стопам своих соотечественников из Pantech и LG.
