В России стартовал конкурс «Внеси свой вклад в экосистему Samsung»

Стартовал конкурс «Внеси свой вклад в экосистему Samsung», который проводит российское отделение транснационального электронного гиганта. Для участия в конкурсе, до 31 мая, необходимо представить оригинальный сценарий использования устройств и сервисов Samsung в рамках единой экосистемы для решения актуальных пользовательских задач.
В сценарии могут быть задействованы любые «умные» устройства Samsung – смартфоны, смарт-часы и фитнес-браслеты Galaxy Watch, беспроводные наушники Galaxy Buds, очки виртуальной реальности Gear VR, а также бытовая техника. Кроме того, приветствуется использование различных сервисов, доступных в продуктах Samsung, например, подключения устройств через единый интерфейс SmartThings, облачное хранилище данных Samsung Cloud, сервис запоминания паролей Samsung Pass, функции бесконтактной оплаты Samsung Pay, приложения для контроля за состоянием здоровья Samsung Health или автоматизированный помощник Bixby.
С 1 по 20 июня экспертное жюри конкурса отберёт лучшие заявки по следующим параметрам: степень полезности, акцент на экосистеме Samsung, количество задействованных продуктов/сервисов Samsung, структурированность идеи и подача.
Победитель конкурса получит новый флагманский смартфон Samsung Galaxy S10, серебряный призёр – смарт-часы Galaxy Watch Active, а авторы 50-ти лучших идей будут награждены стильными брендированными толстовками «Do what you can’t».
Чтобы принять участие в конкурсе, необходимо прислать краткое описание идеи на ecosystem@iot-academy.ru  с её развёрнутой презентацией в приложении. Количество заявок от одного участника неограниченно.

Launched a contest "Make a contribution to the Samsung ecosystem"

The contest “Make your contribution to the Samsung ecosystem”, which is held by the Russian branch of the transnational electronic giant, has started.
In order to participate in the competition, it is necessary to submit the original scenario of using Samsung devices and services within a single ecosystem for solving actual user tasks.
The winner of the competition will receive the new flagship smartphone Samsung Galaxy S10, the silver winner - the smart watch Galaxy Watch Active, and the authors of the 50 best ideas will be awarded with stylish branded hoodies “Do what you can’t”.
Reception of proposals from contestants expires on May 31st.

Очередной патентный тролль пытается отсудить у Samsung почти $3 миллиарда

6 апреля 2018 года в окружной суд Техаса было подано исковое заявление от американской компании PACid Technologies, которая обвиняет в незаконном использовании своих патентов корпорацию Samsung Electronics.
Истец утверждает, что Samsung, оборудовав свои коммуникаторы дактилоскопическими датчиками и возможностью сканирования радужной оболочки и лиц пользователей, нарушил 3 патента PACid Technologies, связанных с шифрованием данных.
В исковом заявлении указаны смартфоны Samsung Galaxy S6, Galaxy S7, Galaxy S8 и их модификации, а также система безопасности Samsung Knox. Принимая во внимание суммарные продажи этих устройств за последние несколько лет, PACid Technologies намерена просить суд признать Samsung виновным и выплатить сумму почти в 3 миллиарда долларов США.
Профильные СМИ отмечают, что PACid Technologies также судится с Google, Apple, Nintendo и другими компаниями, которые, по её мнению, незаконно пользуются технологиями PACid.
Специалисты называют представителей PACid патентными троллями, чей бизнес почти полностью состоит из судебных разбирательств в надежде нажиться на успехе других компаний.
Технопортал ETNews сообщает: эксперты, проводившие анализ содержания официального сайта компании PACid, заявили, что никакой реальной активности  в области создания систем идентификации и безопасности она не проводит. Вся деятельность этой конторы сосредоточена на скупке похожих патентных заявок и дальнейшего их предъявления в качестве "доказательств" своей правоты.  
Представители Samsung сказали, что корпорация готовится к судебному разбирательству и принимает соответствующие меры для предъявления контраргументов.
Надо отметить, что тяжбы крупных корпораций с патентными троллями являются уже привычным явлением. В большинстве случаев такие процессы заканчиваются поражением истцов, однако игра для подобных "организаций" стоит свеч, поскольку в редких случаях им всё же удаётся получить с ответчиков внушительные суммы, как это уже было в судебном споре с Microsoft и некоторыми другими именитыми брэндами.
Для компаний-инноваторов в США проблема патентного троллинга является большим препятствием при внедрении революционных идей в потребительские продукты и специалисты в области высоких технологий уже давно призывают законодателей ограничить деятельность подобных структур на территории страны, но воз и ныне там.

Samsung faces US$3b patent infringement suit in US

PACid Technologies, which is an American data security technology research firm, filed a $2.82 billion (3 trillion KRW) patent lawsuit against Samsung Electronics at Texas Eastern District Court. This lawsuit is the biggest ever in history.
PACid claimed that Samsung Electronics infringed two of its patents and one of its South Korean patents for all of its biometric (fingerprint, iris, face) technologies that were applied to its Smartphones. Relevant models are entire models ranging from Galaxy S6 to Galaxy S8. This is PACid’s first patent lawsuit against a Smartphone manufacturer related to biometrics and it is targeting Samsung Electronics and Samsung Electronics America.
According to PACid’s petition obtained by The Electronic Times, PACid claimed that Samsung Electronics’ biometric technologies infringed its patents (U.S. Patent No. 9,577,993, No. 9,876,771) on ‘System and Method for Authentication of a User’ and its South Korean patent (KR20110128567A).
Not only did PACid claimed that Samsung Electronics’ biometric technologies infringed its patents, but it also claimed that Samsung Electronics’ biometrics operating system (OS) called Samsung PASS and Samsung’s KNOX OS also infringed its patents.
Although it did not specify the amount of compensation for damage, it is heard that it will claim an amount compared to global sales volumes of Galaxy S6, S6 Edge, S7, S7 Edge, S8, and S8 Edge just like how Apple filed a patent lawsuit against Samsung Electronics in the past.
PACid claimed that Samsung Electronics knew about the information of its patents at least since January of 2017. If this claim is accepted by Texas Eastern District Court, PACid said that Samsung Electronics needs to be imposed with an amount of compensation that is equivalent to at most three times increase per Smartphone based on 35 U.S. Code § 284. This indicates that Samsung Electronics needs to be imposed $3 per Smartphone rather than $1 per Smartphone. Based on 35 U.S. Code § 284, minimum amount of claim will be at least $2.82 billion (3 trillion KRW).
35 U.S. Code § 284 has a punitive damage article for companies that do not take necessary measures even when executives of companies are officially notified of infringement of patents. 
Legal industries and security experts brought up a possibility that PACid may be a patent troll that looks for astronomical amount of compensation for damages by purchasing similar patents even when it is professing to be a data security technology research firm. Although they actually traced business activities and PACid’s homepage, they could not find any details regarding their activities. The firm had also raised several patent suits against other tech firms like Google, Apple and Nintendo. 
There is a high chance PACid targeted Samsung Electronics, which is participating as a board member of FIDO, as biometric market has started to expand.
There is also a high chance that PACid will target other global businesses that are part of FIDO alliance depending on court decisions in the future. Because PACid specified that Samsung Electronics’ biometric services are linked to PayPal, it brought up a possibility that it will carry out large-scale patent lawsuits on other surrounding global partners as well.
Because FIDO is operated based on group standards instead of international standards, it is practically impossible for FIDO alliance to take legal measures. This is the reason why it is expected that PACid will start to file patent lawsuits related to biometrics on other global businesses as well such as LG Electronics, Google, and Amazon that are part of FIDO alliance.
“We just became aware of this issue after PACid’s petition was received by Texas Eastern District Court on the 6th of April.” said a representative for Samsung Electronics. “We are planning to look for countermeasures after going over claims made by PACid.” This representative also said that Samsung Electronics is going to appoint an American law firm since this lawsuit is filed against Samsung Electronics and Samsung Electronics America and that it is considering taking legal measures.

7-го сентября Samsung объявил о запуске Mobile Security Rewards Program - новой крупной акции по вознаграждению пользователей мобильных устройств этой марки, которые сообщат о каких-либо потенциальных уязвимостях своих девайсов на программном или аппаратном уровне.
Подобные акции проводят также ближайшие конкуренты Samsung типа Apple и Google. Главное условие: обнаруженная проблема не должна стать достоянием гласности до того момента, покуда о ней не будет сообщено производителю и там не установят реальность такой опасности.
Размер вознаграждения может доходить до 200.000 долларов США, если будет выявлена критическая уязвимость (что маловероятно). При этом Mobile Security Rewards Program рассчитана не только на мобильные устройства, операционную систему Android и её оболочку, разработанную программистами Samsung. Под действие акции подпадают также мобильные приложения, включая интеллектуальный помощник Bixby, Samsung Account, платёжный сервис Samsung Pay, Samsung Pass и т.д.
Естественно, обнаруживший крупную уязвимость исследователь сможет получить $200.000, если предоставит веские доказательства вплоть до демонстрации возможности взлома представителям вендора и опять-таки нераспространения этих сведений до устранения проблемы.
В перечень устройств, подлежащих исследованию на безопасность, Samsung включил 38 моделей*, в том числе достаточно старые, выпущенные в 2015-м году. Дополнительную информацию можно получить на официальном сайте Samsung Mobile Security.

Samsung Electronics today announced the launch of its inaugural Mobile Security Rewards Program, a new vulnerability rewards program which invites members of the security community to assess the integrity of Samsung’s mobile devices and associated software to identify potential vulnerabilities in those products. By leveraging the skills and expertise of the security research community, Samsung will strengthen its ongoing commitment to providing customers with a secure mobile experience.

Samsung’s Commitment to Mobile Security

Samsung’s Mobile Security Rewards program is the latest initiative to demonstrate the company’s steadfast commitment to enabling secure experiences for all its customers. The rewards program kicked off with a pilot in January 2016 to ensure an efficient and productive public introduction to the broader security community.
 Additionally, since October 2015 Samsung has been releasing monthly security updates for its flagship devices. This industry-leading pace of updates would not be possible without the cooperation and assistance of security researchers across the globe.

Mobile Security Rewards Program Details

The program will cover all of Samsung’s mobile devices currently receiving monthly and quarterly security updates, a total of 38 devices*. In addition, the program will reward submissions for potential vulnerabilities in the latest Samsung Mobile Services, including Bixby, Samsung Account, Samsung Pay and Samsung Pass, among others. Dependent upon the severity of a given submission, as well as the researcher’s ability to provide proof of concept, Samsung will issue rewards of up to $200,000.
