League of Legends

League of Legends.

How Samsung Galaxy rebuilt to take down the SKT dynasty

Three years ago, days after winning the 2014 League of Legends World Championship, Samsung Galaxy was at the lowest point in the organization's long history. The entirety of its title-winning team, Samsung Galaxy White, left the club to pursue higher salaries in China, as did every starting player from its sister team Samsung Blue. Over the next year, Samsung Galaxy would become a punchline, a roster filled with no-names and rookies languishing at the bottom of the Korean league.
On Saturday, in front of over 40,000 fans at the Bird's Nest in Beijing, Samsung Galaxy completed its rebuild, ending the dynasty of fellow South Korean side SK Telecom T1 to win the organization's second world title. The team's 3-0 triumph was a result of trusting the process, slowly putting together a roster that could take down the greatest player in the world.
Looking back, Samsung's lost year of 2015 is part of its success story. Even though it spent the season bottom of the LCK standings, the team stuck by the two starters who stood out: Lee "CuVee" Seong-jin and Lee "Crown" Min-ho. Then, adding veteran Kang "Ambition" Chan-yong before the 2016 season took it to the next level. Samsung made a surprising run to last year's Worlds final before being stopped in the final by SKT, losing a classic five-game series at a sold-out Staples Center.
When a majority of teams would have made sweeping changes after failing to win Worlds, signing a superstar free agent or making a flashy trade, Samsung did the opposite. It stuck with the same five players, only adding a young jungler in Kang "Haru" Min-seung to take the load off Ambition's shoulders. The team didn't stray from the rebuild.
Now, in this year's rematch with SKT, led by the game's all-time best player/coach combination in Lee "Faker" Sang-hyeok and mastermind Kim "kkOma" Jung-gyun, Samsung saw its patience rewarded, its blueprint succeed. The longest-tenured member of the team, CuVee, who endured jeers and taunts during the team's darkest season, played a pivotal role on the night, quieting the pro-Faker and SKT crowd with the performance of his life.
But no player took a longer road to the Summoner's Cup than Samsung's captain Ambition. Once regarded as the best mid laner in South Korea before transitioning into the jungler role, he was the first victim of Faker's legend five years ago. At every upswing in his career, Ambition met with an even better performance from Faker. But over the course of this World Championships, the recently married jungler played the best games of his career, when just two years ago people believed it might be time for him to retire.
"It's been seven to eight years of my professional career, [and] I was never the best," he said. "I was one of the top but never the best. I think winning this Worlds in this moment pays back for all those times that I struggled. Maybe all that time struggling was meant for this moment."
Together, Samsung Galaxy did the unthinkable: taking down the SK Telecom T1 dynasty in a one-sided victory. Head coach Choi "Edgar" Woo-beom, who has watched his team rise, fall and rise again, sees his players not as subordinates or pieces on a chessboard, but as a family. "I have two sons, but besides my own sons they [the players] are like my sons," he said.
Tonight, there is no bad to speak of. The rebuild is complete, and Samsung Galaxy is the champion of the world once more.

League of Legends

Staples Center.

Samsung Galaxy sweep Longzhu Gaming to become the first team through to the League of Legends Worlds 2017 semifinals

The first day of the League of Legends Worlds 2017 Knockouts kicked off with a huge upset as Samsung Galaxy decimated Longzhu Gaming.
In the first quarterfinal match of the esports championships, everyone expected the Korean champions Longzhu Gaming to come out the victors.
However Samsung Galaxy, Korea's third seed, defied expectations and played out of their skin to take a 3-0 victory and progress to the semifinals.
Surprising turn of events means that there are are no first seeds remaining from any region, as Team SoloMid, Edward Gaming, G2 Esports, Gigabyte Marines, and Flash Wolves are all out.
Longzhu Gaming were strong favourites for the tournament after beating reigning champions SK Telecom T1 in the Korean final earlier this year, and after going through the Group Stage completely undefeated.
There were talks of them even winning the Grand Final without losing a game in the entire tournament. However, Samsung Galaxy took three games off them and sent them crashing out.
The players from Longzhu Gaming will go to bed hoping it's all been a bad dream, as they certainly had a nightmare on Summoner's Rift.
Not only did Samsung Galaxy play well mechanically, they also seemed to have the beating of Longzhu strategically.

Game 1

Longzhu's mid laner Kwak 'Bdd' Bo-seong was licking his lips in the first game where he was Syndra matched up against the Malzahar of SSG's Lee 'Crown' Min-ho. And indeed, he picked up a solo kill early in the game to take first blood.
It was fairly even in the early game though. A dive in the top lane looked to be going all wrong for SSG, until Kim 'Khan' Dong-ha chased a little too far and lost his life.
The teams traded kills in the middle of the map a number of times, and Longzhu came out slightly on top in a couple of team fights.
They went on to win a big team fight in their own jungle around the 35 minute mark, but Samsung won a far more important one a few minutes later near Baron.
This was the turning point in the match, and Samsung were able to steamroll LZ from then on, until they barged into their base with the ace and the victory in the 45th minute.

Game 2

Longzhu took down Crown early in the game once again, but SSG turned it around a few minutes later with an unexpected four man stack in the mid lane to pick up two kills.
The kills kept coming for Samsung too, and although LZ picked up a dragon in the 19th minute, SSG swarmed them to pick up an ace, losing just two members of their team.
Longzhu simply had no answer to the gold disadvantage they faced, and it only took SSG half an hour to surge into their base and take game two.
Crown had a monumental game on Taliyah, securing 100% kill participation with his score of 9/1/7.

Game 3

Crown took the spotlight in game three even before the players loaded onto the Rift by locking in Lissandra.
He also took first blood in the game after the team invaded the enemy jungle to take down Lee 'Cuzz' Woo-jin on Gragas. Cuzz had a difficult series, often failing to make a meaningful impact.
Meanwhile, the veteran jungler Kang 'Ambition' Chan-yong from SSG was seemingly all over the map, and immensely tanky playing Sejuani in every game in the series.
Building on yet another early lead, Samsung Galaxy snowballed the game, and Longzhu simply didn't have enough damage.
Every time it seemed like LZ were getting back into the game with a kill or two, Samsung were taking an objective on the other side of the map.
In another relatively quick game, Samsung were able to take Longzhu's nexus after 34 minutes, securing a surprising whitewash, and a place in the next round.
Samsung have now shot up the prediction list, but the slight favourites now have to be SK Telecom T1, three time winners and Korea's second seed.
For now, Samsung Galaxy can relax before preparations begin for their semifinal match on October 29.

Samsung Galaxy demolish KT Rolster to qualify for the 2017 World Championship

The LCK regional finals took place against the looming backdrop of the 2017 League of Legends World Championship in China. kt Rolster had more championship points than Samsung Galaxy, but none of that mattered. The third place spot at Worlds always goes to the winner of the Regional Finals.
Samsung will advance in dramatic fashion to the World Championships in China. Other teams will have to consider changes for the coming season, while Samsung will be wondering what they can do to topple the two other Korean giants.
A 3-0 series is impressive in any situation, but to do so in the LCK regional finals against kt Rolster lays down a gauntlet and demands that other teams pay attention.
Samsung will want replicate this kind of form and determination. Whether or not that’s possible remains to be seen. One thing is for sure though, with the likes of Longzhu, SKT T1 and Samsung in the World Championships, other leagues will need to be at their very best to topple the Korean giants.
