Samsung has updated the software of premium smartphones of recent years to Android Pie and increased the security of low-end models

Samsung has accelerated the upgrade of its mobile devices to the latest version of the Android 9 operating system (Pie), and this concerns not only the flagship lines of the Galaxy S and Note, but also the less expensive Galaxy A.
Recently, premium models in 2017 and 2018 received an Android Pie and a new One UI shell, as well as the ability to reassign the functionality of the mechanical button to call the Bixby voice assistant, which is not everyone needs.
At the same time, the owners of the "budget flagship" Galaxy J7 (2017) reported a major update that optimizes the operation of the device and increases its security. By the way, by mid-2019, this smartphone will also receive an upgrade to Android Pie.

Любая новинка в линейке Samsung Galaxy перед тем, как поступить в продажу, проходит многочисленные тесты, которые определяют её готовность к активному повседневному использованию. Новые функции проходят тщательные испытания на соответствие заявленным характеристикам, а для определения прочности устройство помещается в экстремальные условия. Цель всех проверок – от испытаний на теплостойкость до дроп-тестов – сделать использование смартфонов и носимых устройств Samsung максимально безопасным при любых обстоятельствах.
Сегодня мы расскажем о лаборатории тестирования надёжности в Samsung Digital City в Сувоне, Южная Корея, чтобы показать  как это происходит.

Тесты на каждом этапе

Группа тестирования надёжности отвечает за испытание мобильных продуктов и носимых устройств Samsung, в частности, линеек смартфонов Galaxy S, Galaxy Note, а также смарт-часов и фитнес-браслетов Gear S, Gear Sport, Galaxy Watch, Gear Fit.
Команда специалистов по тестированию приступает к работе, как только инженеры Samsung принимают решение о том, каким будет новое устройство. После того, как становятся известны основные характеристики и функции гаджета, группа выясняет, какие компоненты необходимо протестировать, и начинает испытания, не дожидаясь их окончательного внедрения. Результаты тестов сразу же передаются разработчикам, чтобы те продолжали совершенствовать устройства. При этом специалисты по тестированию задействованы в течение всего процесса производства гаджетов и продолжают изучать уже вышедшие на рынок устройства, опираясь на отзывы потребителей. В общей сложности каждый продукт проходит более 10 тестов,  в которых участвуют тысячи экземпляров. Тесты необходимы для того, чтобы оценить качество работы устройств Samsung при обычном использовании, а также проверить их на соответствие стандартам.

Лаборатория качества изображения

Камеры смартфонов Galaxy проходят количественные и качественные оценки производительности.
Количественная оценка касается таких критериев, как яркость, точность цвета и цифровой шум изображения. Источники света различной интенсивности позволяют моделировать широкий диапазон условий, в которых проводится фотосъёмка, после чего изображения изучаются с помощью специальной программы, оценивающей работу камеры.
На этапе качественной оценки с помощью масштабированных моделей реальных сцен воспроизводится работа камеры в различных условиях окружающей среды. Воссоздаются различные типы освещения, от уютного ресторана до освещённой неоновыми огнями улицы, от яркого дня до тёмной ночи. Лаборатория тестирования находится в помещении, поэтому источники света не подвержены влиянию внешних факторов, что делает измерения точными. Тесты также проводятся вне лаборатории в реальных условиях.

Акустическая лаборатория

Рингтоны, музыка и голосовые вызовы – только часть окружающего смартфон звукового ландшафта. Чтобы убедиться в максимальном качестве звука, устройства тестируются в двух разных помещениях.
Первое, безэховая камера, – это специальная комната, предназначенная для устранения внешнего шума, позволяющая оценить чистое акустическое качество звука. Вторая камера позволяет имитировать разговор по телефону в различных условиях: когда гаджет прижат к уху, по громкой связи, а также, если используются наушники или Bluetooth-гарнитура. Эти камеры позволяют воссоздать практически любую ситуацию, возникающую в реальной жизни. Результаты анализируются компьютером и передаются команде разработчиков.

Лаборатория проверки теплостойкости

По мере того, как расширяются интеллектуальные возможности смартфонов, связь между производительностью и нагревом устройства становится всё большей задачей для команды по тестированию надёжности.
В процессе тестирования специалисты воспроизводят условия активного использования смартфонов, например, при "тяжёлых" 3D играх или приложениях, интенсивно использующих ресурсы, после чего нагрев устройства измеряется при помощи термальной камеры. В процессе теста отмечается как уровень нагрева, так и источник генерации тепла. Результаты направляются команде разработчиков для внесения изменений в дизайн устройства.

Лаборатория дроп-тестов

Каждый из тестовых сэмплов неоднократно бросают с различной высоты под разным углом и на разные поверхности для проверки прочности устройства.
В лаборатории также используются камеры, осуществляющие съёмку падения смартфонов на сверхвысоких скоростях, чтобы специалисты могли проанализировать этот процесс. Изображения помогают понять, как именно падает устройство, при каком угле падения осуществляется максимальное воздействие и что может служить причиной повреждений. Результаты помогают разработчикам защитить гаджеты, если пользователи их уронят.

Лаборатория проверки износостойкости

Многие люди пользуются смартфонами несколько лет, поэтому устройство должно быть достаточно износостойким, чтобы выдержать длительное активное использование. Смартфоны Galaxy помещаются во вращающуюся машину, воспроизводящую падение устройства с низких ступеней.
Износостойкость также тестируется в ходе серий повторяющихся действий, таких как нажатие на кнопки, использование разъёмов для наушников и открытие лотка для SIM-карты. Измеряется даже способность аппарата выдерживать нагрузку от того, что пользователь садится, не вынимая смартфон из заднего кармана брюк.

Лаборатория проверки защиты от воды

Группа исследования надёжности проводит тесты защиты смартфонов от воды в соответствии с международными стандартами IP Code.
Тесты включают симуляцию дождя, направление на устройство струи воды и его полное погружение под воду, после чего по каждому пункту гаджету присваивается отдельный рейтинг IP. Смартфон с рейтингом IPX8, например, может использоваться даже после погружения на 1,5 метра под воду с течение 30 минут, поэтому в лаборатории должна подтвердиться нормальная работа устройства после такой нагрузки.
Носимые устройства Galaxy Watch, Gear Sport и Gear Fit2 Pro предназначены для использования во время плавания, поэтому их необходимо также тестировать на работу при давлении в 5 атмосфер. В лаборатории был разработан специальный тест для оценки производительности гаджетов во время заплыва.

Lab Tour: How Samsung is Ensuring the Reliability of Galaxy Devices

Before any new device in the Galaxy series is launched, numerous tests are conducted to ensure its capability to withstand the wear and tear of daily life. New features undergo rigorous trials to meet specifications, while the device is placed under extreme conditions to determine its durability. From heat tests to drop tests, it is Samsung’s aim to protect devices even from the previously unexpected.

To discover more about what each device must sustain during these trials, the Newsroom paid a visit to the Reliability Test Group at Samsung’s Digital City in Suwon, South Korea.

Tests at Every Step of the Way

The Reliability Test Group is responsible for testing mobile and wearable products sent from Samsung’s manufacturing sites in Suwon and Gumi, South Korea, including the Galaxy S and Galaxy Note series of smartphones.
As soon as decisions begin to be made about a new device or model, the Reliability Test Group gets to work. Once the specs and features are determined, the group considers which parts require testing and verification, and the process starts even before the features have been fully integrated. Test results are immediately passed on to the development division for improvement. Throughout development, the test group engages continuously in the production process, processing feedback about the device even after its launch and release. More than a dozen tests are required to validate a product. While the number varies from device to device, thousands of models are put to the test before launch. The tests are designed to evaluate how the devices perform during normal day-to-day use and follow a standard based on internationally-certified test criteria.

Image Quality Lab

In this era of visual communication, people are searching for even more ways to express themselves using their smartphones. To help users take great pictures, Galaxy smartphone cameras undergo both quantitative and qualitative evaluations to verify their performance.
The quantitative evaluation stage measures a range of criteria including brightness, color clarity and image noise. Using light sources of different intensities, a wide range of conditions are simulated. Photographs are taken, and these images are evaluated through a specialist program that assesses the camera’s specifications.
The qualitative evaluation stage reproduces a variety of environments with the help of scaled models of real-life scenes. These models replicate indoor and outdoor spaces, such as a restaurant or a street lit by neon lights at night. There is also an artificial sunlight system which can simulate different lighting conditions, from a dark night to a bright day. Testing in an indoor lab ensures that the light source is unaffected by external factors, leading to more accurate comparisons. Tests are also performed outside of the lab in real outdoor environments.

Acoustic Lab

Ringtones, music and voice calls are just part of the diverse soundscape that a smartphone will produce and receive throughout its life. To assure quality across all types of sounds, the devices are tested in two different chambers.
The first chamber, the anechoic chamber, is a special room designed to eliminate outside noise, so that pure acoustic quality can be evaluated. The second chamber simulates the smartphone’s sound while talking on the phone in different settings: holding the phone to your ear, using speakerphone or earphones, or connecting to a Bluetooth headset. Almost everything that happens in real situations is tested in these chambers and the results are analyzed by a computer to provide feedback to the development team.

Heat Lab

As our devices are becoming smarter, the relationship between performance and heat is an important concern for the Reliability Test Group.
When testing the smartphones, the team reproduces conditions of heavy usage, such as playing high-spec games and using resource-intensive apps, and measures the device’s heat levels with a thermal camera. The test monitors both where and how much heat is generated. The results of the test are sent back to the development team for them to adjust the design accordingly.

Drop Test Lab

Each of the test samples is dropped from different heights, at different angles, and onto different types of surfaces, often repeatedly to test the robustness of the device against stress.
The drop test lab also uses high-speed cameras to take footage of the smartphones falling, which the team can analyze. The images help them understand how the device falls, the angle of fall that has the greatest impact, and what might be the cause of any breakages. The results help developers protect devices against future drops.

Durability Lab

Many people own the same device for years, so a smartphone should be durable enough to withstand daily use. Galaxy smartphones are placed in a machine, which rolls the device around to simulate the impact of a phone tumbling downstairs from a lower height.
Durability is also tested with a series of repetitive actions, such as pressing the buttons, using the earphone jacks and opening the SIM card tray. The team even measures how well a smartphone can withstand the load and pressure of a person sitting on their phone when its in their back pocket.

Waterproof Lab

The Reliability Test Group conduct waterproof tests in accordance with the international standards set by the IP Code.
The tests consist of rain simulation, water jets, and submersion, which each have a corresponding IP rating. A smartphone that is rated IPX8, for example, can be used even if it has been submerged in 1.5 meters of water for 30 minutes, with the test lab verifying that the device works normally.
Galaxy Watch, Gear Sports and Gear Fit2 Pro are designed to be suitable for wearing while swimming, and require other tests to ensure that they meet the atmospheric pressure standard of 5ATM. The lab has designed a test that assesses the devices’ performance while the wearer is swimming.

Environmental Test Lab

Since devices are used in different climate conditions across the world, durability and performance must remain unchanged from environment to environment.
The test lab uses different chambers to test a variety of environments, with the chambers set at different humidity levels and temperatures, mimicking climates all over the Earth. The person conducting the test will assess whether the device’s functions still work under these conditions.
The Galaxy series represents quality without compromise. The devices are the result of the tireless efforts of the Reliability Test Group, as they constantly ask questions and strive for better, ensuring that the devices meet durability standards.
