"Samsung's flagship budget smartphone" Galaxy J7 (2017) continues to receive security updates

 

At the end of April, information appeared in the specialized media that Samsung was allegedly ending support for its flagship smartphone in 2017 Galaxy S8, having sent the latest security patch to these devices. Whether this is true or not, it is not known for certain, since the preliminary lists of Samsung communicators that continue to receive updates do not always correspond to reality and may be supplemented in the future.

But what we know for sure is that the peer of the Galaxy S8, called, at one time, the "flagship among budget smartphones", Galaxy J7 (2017), today received another firmware update. Such a device is at the disposal of our editors and works very reliably. During the entire operation of the Galaxy J7 (2017), we have not recorded any problems.

The 19.91MB file brings the March security update. For a 4-year-old device, the cost of which at the time of release did not exceed $334, it can be considered another gift from Samsung. Recall that the smartphone received the previous 40MB firmware update at the end of March.

На днях в профильных СМИ появилась информация, что Samsung якобы прекращает поддержку своего флагманского смартфона 2017 года Galaxy S8, отправив на эти девайсы в минувшем апреле последний патч безопасности. Так это или нет, доподлинно неизвестно, поскольку предварительные списки коммуникаторов Samsung, продолжающих получать обновления, не всегда соответствуют действительности и в дальнейшем могут быть дополнены.

Но что нам известно абсолютно точно, так это то, что ровесник Galaxy S8, названный, в своё время, "флагманом среди бюджетных смартфонов", Galaxy J7 (2017), сегодня получил очередное обновление прошивки. Такой аппарат имеется в распоряжении нашей редакции и служит верой и правдой без каких-либо проблем.

Файл объёмом 19,91Мб приносит мартовское обновление системы безопасности, что для 4-летнего аппарата, стоимость которого на момент выхода не превышала 19.000 рублей ($334), можно считать очередным подарком от Samsung. Напомним, что предыдущее обновление прошивки объёмом 40Мб смартфон получил в конце марта.

"Флагман среди бюджетников" 2017 года - Samsung Galaxy J7 продолжает получать программные обновления, что свидетельствует о серьёзных намерениях Samsung выполнять обязательства по продлению поддержки своих мобильных устройств, даже если это относительно недорогие аппараты.

Конечно, флагманские модели того времени получают новые прошивки почаще, но на то они и флагманы, за которые были уплачены весьма внушительные суммы. Тем не менее, владельцам некогда весьма популярной линейки Galaxy J7 (ныне уже не существующей) грех жаловаться. Помимо того, что эти аппараты достаточно хорошо оснащены даже по нынешним временам (довольно ёмкий аккумулятор, сканер отпечатков пальцев, приличные камеры, встроенные комбинированные модули MST/NFC для полноценной поддержки сервиса Samsung Pay, стабильная работа приложений и металлический корпус), они продолжают получать обновление системы безопасности, как минимум, раз в полгода.

На днях такое обновление объёмом около 40Мб получили российские владельцы Galaxy J7 (2017). Скорее всего, это патч, закрывающий обнаруженные "дыры" в системе Android и некоторых приложениях.

The "flagship among budget smartphones" of 2017 - Samsung Galaxy J7 continues to receive software updates, which indicates that Samsung is serious about fulfilling its obligations to extend support for its mobile devices, even if they are relatively inexpensive devices.

In addition to the fact that these devices are quite well equipped even today (a fairly capacious battery, a fingerprint scanner, decent cameras, built-in combined MST/NFC modules for full support of the Samsung Pay service, stable applications operation and a beautiful metal case), they continue to receive security update at least every six months.

Recently, the russian owners of Galaxy J7 (2017) received such an update with a volume of about 40MB. Most likely, this is a patch that closes the discovered "holes" in the Android operating system and some applications.

Южнокорейский техногигант продолжает поддерживать систему безопасности и обновления штатных приложений в аппаратах этой серии, которые, в своё время, разошлись огромными тиражами.

В последних числах сентября российские владельцы Galaxy J7 (2017) заметили большую активность в обновлениях системы безопасности и различных программных расширений. Кроме того, была повышена версия графической оболочки One UI, что приближает эти аппараты к актуальным середнячкам серии Galaxy A 2020 года.

В нашей редакции проходит длительное испытание Galaxy J7 (2017), на котором мы проверяем надёжность поддержки производителем недорогих девайсов прошлых лет. На этот раз, помимо повышения стабильности работы, обновление принесло некоторое увеличение срока службы аккумулятора на одной зарядке. Надо отметить, что все эти годы смартфон работает надёжно, а фирменный процессор Exynos не вызывает никаких нареканий в повседневной эксплуатации.

Samsung Galaxy J7 (2017) received the September security and optimization update for the Android platform

The "budget flagship" of 2017, the Samsung Galaxy J7, is still up-to-date, despite not getting the latest version of the Android OS. The South Korean tech giant continues to support the security system and updates to standard applications in the devices of this series, which, at one time, were sold in huge numbers.

In the last days of September, Russian owners of Galaxy J7 (2017) noticed a lot of activity in security updates and various software extensions.  In addition, the One UI version of the graphical shell has been upgraded, which brings these devices closer to the current mid-range Galaxy A series of 2020.

In our office, the Galaxy J7 (2017) is being tested for a long time, where we check the reliability of the manufacturer's support for inexpensive devices of the past years. This time, in addition to improving stability, the update brought a slight increase in battery life on a single charge. It should be noted that all these years the smartphone has been working reliably, and the proprietary Exynos processor does not cause any complaints in everyday use.

Together with the Galaxy J7 (2017) is worked the TIZEN-powered Galaxy Watch Active2, and also 3 Samsung's home cinema systems are connected via the SmartThings app.

Известные международные аналитические группы начинают публиковать итоги первых месяцев 2018 года на мировом рынке мобильных гаджетов.
Так, например, Counterpoint сообщает, что в апреле смартфоны Samsung Galaxy S9 и S9 Plus стали главными бестселлерами, опередив "юбилейный" Apple iPhone X. Причём спрос на оба флагмана Samsung примерно одинаков: каждый из аппаратов занял по 2,6% доли мировых продаж.
iPhone X опустился на 3-е место с долей 2,3%. Такой же показатель и у iPhone 8 Plus.
В первой десятке лидеров также оказались iPhone 8, Xiaomi Redmi 5A, iPhone 6, Xiaomi Redmi 5 Plus/Note 5, iPhone 7 и Galaxy S8. На эти 10 моделей пришлось почти 20% всех глобальных продаж.
Почти одновременно с Counterpoint другая аналитическая компания IHS Markit обнародовала результаты продаж по итогам 1-го квартала 2018 года. Здесь ситуация оказалась не менее интересной. Вслед за лидерами iPhone X и iPhone 8 идёт модель Samsung Galaxy Grand Prime+ 2016 года, что весьма нетипично для первой тройки. Обычно на столь высокой позиции оказываются более свежие модели. Тем не менее это несомненный успех разработчиков Samsung, которым удалось создать столь привлекательную "долгоиграющую" модель.
5-е место Galaxy S9+ и 7-е Galaxy S9 объясняется тем, что они поступили в продажу под конец 1-го квартала и, естественно, не могли претендовать на более высокие позиции. Также следует отметить успех Galaxy On5 (2016), занявшего 6-е место, а также Galaxy J7 (2017), который замыкает почётную десятку лидеров глобального рынка.

Counterpoint: Samsung Galaxy S9 Plus becomes the best selling model surpassing iPhone X

According to the latest research from Counterpoint’s Market Pulse, Samsung’s Galaxy S9 series became the best seller globally, pushing Apple’s iPhone X to the third spot. The sales of Galaxy S9 series improved, driven by performance in APAC and NAM.
Xiaomi continues to make its presence felt in the top selling smartphones globally and grabbed the sixth and the eighth position with its Redmi 5A and Redmi 5 Plus / Note 5. This is the first time Xiaomi grabbed two positions within the top ten model list. Xiaomi grew both in China and India due to its affordable smartphones.
*Apple declined month on month due to seasonality. Apple continues to dominate the global best-selling smartphone models occupying five spots in the list.
*Demand of Apple iPhone 7 remains strong in APAC and NAM regions.
*Samsung price cuts on older Galaxy S8 series along with aggressive marketing and cashback offers, easy EMI’s amongst other factors drove sales for premium flagships.
*Top ten bestsellers are skewed either towards the premium segment or the entry level segment.

IHS Markit: iPhone X Led Global Smartphone Unit Shipments in Q1 2018

As global smartphone shipments reached 345.5 million units in the first quarter of 2018, Apple iPhone X was the leading model, with 12.7 million units shipped. According to business information provider IHS Markit, iPhone 8 ranked second, shipping 8.5 million units, followed by the Samsung Galaxy Grand Prime Plus, iPhone 8 Plus and Galaxy S9 Plus.
“Apple has secured the first and second ranking for the most-shipped smartphone model for many years,” said Jusy Hong, director of consumer devices, for IHS Markit. “The iPhone 7 Plus and iPhone 7 ranked first and second in the first quarter last year. Apple and Samsung maintained the same ranking as last year — replacing existing models with the latest models from this year.”
However, overall shipment volume of new models declined for Apple this year. The company shipped 35.6 million combined units of iPhone 7 Plus and iPhone 7 in the first quarter of 2017, but the combined shipment volume of this year's top two models declined to 21.2 million units. “Although Apple’s newest model shipment volume declined, the company announced good earnings in the first quarter, mainly because of price increases in the iPhone 8 series and the super-premium price of the iPhone X,” Hong said.
The number of sale-priced iPhone models is on the rise, which means Apple is selling more older models. To increase the share of its latest models in the total iPhone sales volume, Apple is likely to expand its iPhone X form factor to new three new models, which are expected to launch in the second half of this year, including two models with AMOLED displays and one with an LCD panel. “Manufacturers are keen on displays, because they are a visible upgrade that can be easily monetized with consumers,” Hong said. “These upgrades will also increase Apple’s share of new models this year.”
The latest flagship models of Samsung’s Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9 Plus ranked fifth and seventh, respectively, in the quarterly “Smartphone Model Market Tracker” from IHS Markit. Samsung released its new flagship models in March this year, while its earlier models were released in April 2017. The most-shipped smartphone model from Samsung is the Galaxy Grand Prime Plus, a low-tier smartphone released in November 2016. This model was the second most-shipped smartphone model in 2017 and it continues to sell well this year.
Chinese smartphone manufacturers have grown their global smartphone market share. However, few individual models from these manufacturers reach comparable scale with Apple and Samsung models. Delay of new model releases from Huawei, Xiaomi and Vivo is one reason there aren’t any smartphone models from Chinese manufacturers in the top 10 list.
