Media rushed to spread sensations about NEON technology coming to Samsung consumer smartphones

Last week, many media outlets reported that Samsung's "artificial human" technology NEON, presented at CES 2020, will arrive on its consumer mobile devices by the end of this year. Many IT fans have imagined a fantastic vision of the future that is available today.

However, the head of the STAR Labs (Samsung Technology & Advanced Research) development team, Pranav Mistry, after a while reminded in his twitter account that, as was originally planned, the artificial people generated by the neural network would be intended for use in the B2B sector, that is, not available to ordinary users. Therefore, ordinary consumers will not be able to become the owner of their digital avatar in the near future.

NEON's digital people will work in areas such as banking, television, teaching, and so on. The virtual avatar management program allows you to download information from various spheres of human activity to help clients of institutions (banks, hotels, cinemas, fitness clubs, etc.) get it as quickly as possible without the participation of service personnel. NEON can also be used as a TV news host. At the same time, artificial people NEON are capable of self-learning and the formation of their own personality. Of course, over time, the scope for NEON will expand, and eventually such technology may appear in consumer smartphones. But this will not happen tomorrow, so enthusiasts of their own electronic avatars will have to be patient.

В дальнейшем STAR Labs собирается отказаться от разработки NEON с внешностью реальных людей. Для желающих зарегистрироваться в системе, компания готова проанализировать всю информацию, находящуюся в открытом доступе, после чего представит клиенту изображение цифрового профиля. Пользователи не смогут самостоятельно выбирать, как будет выглядеть их цифровой профиль, по аналогии с игрой Sims.
В NEON такой подход объясняют тем, что им не хочется, чтобы люди начинали полностью идентифицировать себя с цифровыми профилями. При этом изначально NEON будет копировать внешность реальных людей для ускорения запуска проекта.
Вероятно, боты будут продаваться по модели подписки: то есть человек не будет полностью владеть своим цифровым профилем, а только арендовать его. Как устроена технология NEON

Of all the digital pals shown off at CES last week, none were quite as uncanny as Neon, the humanlike "life form" funded by a Samsung lab (but don't confuse it with a Samsung product). In a practical sense, consider it a chatbot with a human face and personality.
Imagine if Siri or Alexa had a virtual face and could carry on a genuine conversation instead of only fetching you tomorrow's forecast. Neon is headed in that direction, and it's equal parts fascinating, impressive and eerie.
Much of the technology behind this lifelike AI is still under development, with a beta release slated for later this year. Consider our curiosity piqued. Here's a virtual being that looks nearly human. What's it for, and will people accept it or reject it for being "too" human?
Neon comes at a time when companies are ramping up investment in AI technologies, from camera processing to full-blown interfaces like this. For example, two years ago, Samsung vowed to invest $22 billion on AI and 5G by the end of 2020. But this increased AI spending goes hand-in-hand with pushback about the ethics of creating digital life that skirts the edge of sentience.
CNET got a chance to interview Neon CEO Pranav Mistry and interact with an actual Neon. Both encounters led to more questions. Even still, the buzz around Neon is palpable. What does a Neon do, can it "feel", and what happens next? Here's everything we know about the Neon project, as well as a few lingering questions about these next-generation AIs.

First things first, Neon is the name of the company, the project and an individual AI entity. You can communicate with a Neon, with two Neons, and so forth. 

What's a Neon?

A Neon is an artificially intelligent digital avatar that's meant to mimic real human appearance and emotions. It's envisioned as a highly lifelike companion that has its own personality and can converse and behave like humans. Neons can also remember and learn.
According to Neon CEO Pranav Mistry, "Neons are more like us, an independent but virtual living being, who can show emotions and learn from experiences." According to the founder's vision, they're like a related - yet different - new species of life from humans.

What does a Neon do?

Right now, not much. Neon is in its early start-up phase, generating buzz and interest, as well as possible use cases when the technology matures. At CES, Neons acted mostly in a chatbot capacity, as an AI engine with a face that you can speak to - but about far more than the weather or how long it will take to drive to the mall.
Some possible scenarios include being a language tutor, concierge, personal financial adviser, receptionist, virtual counselor or healthcare provider, actor, TV anchor or spokesperson. The list goes on.
For example, you could potentially learn yoga from a Neon programmed to show you various poses and, much like a human teacher, incrementally increase the level of difficulty as you master new skills. If you wanted to become fluent in a new language, a Neon could teach it to you, as well as translate in real time when you need help.

A Neon isn't Siri or Google Assistant replacement

A Neon isn't designed to replace digital assistants like Apple's Siri, Amazon's Alexa or Google Assistant by fetching answers to simple questions about the weather or sports scores. Nor is it there to control your smart home devices, set reminders and alarms or play your favorite music.
According to the company, Neons are also not "androids, surrogates or copies of real humans," although they may exhibit similar physical or behavioral traits to actual people. They aren't meant to be the software personality behind robots, either.

What's the relationship between Neon and Samsung?

Neon is the brainchild of longtime Samsung researcher Pranav Mistry. The project emerged out of STAR Labs - an acronym for Samsung Technology and Advanced Research Labs - and is funded by Samsung, but it's not actually a Samsung company.
Mistry told Tibken that Neon isn't meant to replace Samsung's digital assistant Bixby, it won't be installed in Samsung products, and that the company operates independently of Samsung. 
But having Samsung's backing also means that Mistry doesn't have to have a clear business model yet for Neons, he said. Ultimately, Mistry envisions the startup having other investors alongside Samsung.

A Neon could be a modern hologram

Mistry told CNET that Neon doesn't intend to turn the avatars into physical robots, but he speculates that eventually they may exist as holograms. In the meantime, expect to interact with Neons using the same technology you use to connect with friends and family - on smartphones, tablets, PCs and even smart TVs, similar to using apps like Skype and FaceTime.
When you encounter them, Neons should appear lifelike and life-size, at a similar scale to the people you already video chat with. The first phase of Neons are based on real human likenesses, but future Neons can be modeled to look like real people, the company said. The Neons will still look like humans, but not any actual, living people.

Feelings can be hurt, hearts can be broken

Another way the company says Neons are different from Amazon's Alexa, Siri and the rest is that Neons are not programmed to remain passive in the face of indignity. 
If you're mean or nasty to a Neon, you run the risk of upsetting it, or even making the AI angry at you. Presumably, if you're pleasant and polite to your Neon, it will respond in kind.

You can't customize your own Neon

Unlike in games such as The Sims - or even Apple's Memoji feature on iPhones ($699 at Amazon) and iPads ($350 at Walmart) - you won't be able to choose how your Neon looks. They will arrive on your screens fully developed, and you won't be able to change them. 
The implication is that the company wants to keep the focus more on the interactions you have with Neons, and less on superficial aspects like appearance. 
As Mistry told CNET, "When you meet a friend, you build that friendship, not that you build that friend. In the same way, businesses who hire Neons can't decide what they look like." They even come with their own names, like Hana, Natasha, Jordan and Johnny.

You won't own your Neon, either

Neons likely will be sold under a subscription model, meaning that companies and individuals can essentially rent, but not own, an individual Neon. 
Businesses will be able to "hire" Neons for specialized tasks, like translation, but will be unable to license the core technology that powers Neons. It's unclear, however, whether you can have a Neon with you all the time or if they only show up for, say, watching Netflix for a few hours on Fridays or teaching you Mandarin on Tuesdays.

Expect a higher degree of privacy than you're used to

Privacy concerns around voice-interface AI are growing, and it's with that in mind that the company behind Neon claims that privacy is at the core of the AI's design. All language processing occurs on-device, the company says, and all records of your interactions with Neon are kept private. The company stresses that it will never share your private information without your permission. 
Like a real, human friend, the memories of interactions are tied to one specific Neon. If you interact with a new Neon, it won't be able to pick up where you left off with the previous one. You're starting over, as if it's a new person you're meeting.  

Speaking of core technology, here's the techy stuff

There are two fundamental technologies driving Neons. First is Core R3, which stands for reality, real-time and responsiveness. 
Think of Core R3 as the graphics engine that powers Neons' natural movements, expressions and speech. Then there's Spectra, which will drive the AI's "spectrum of intelligence, learning, emotions and memory." It's what gives a Neon its mind, heart and soul, if you will. Spectra is not quite ready for prime time just yet, but the company says it will preview the technology sometime later this year.

Neons still have quite a way to go

If you're noticing that Neon leans heavily on potential and much less on present-day performance, you're not wrong. The company's CES presentation was meant to demo the Core R3 technology that powers the Neons' movements and interactions, but the Spectra engine driving "intelligence, learning, emotions and memory" is still under development.

Other questions we have about Neon

* The company says Neon will see a beta release later this year, but we don't know when it will become widely available.
* The Neons on display at CES 2020 appear as both male and female avatars, but are they meant to be gendered? Are their preferred pronouns "he" or "she" or "it" (or something else entirely)? Will there be transgender Neons, too?
* How much will a subscription cost? Will some Neons, possibly those with more specialized skills or knowledge, cost more than others?
* Chatbots have a sordid history. A notable recent example was Microsoft's Twitterbot, named Tay, which turned into a sex-crazed, Hitler-praising racist. It's unclear what - if any - fail-safes Neon will have to prevent similar corruption.

CES 2020: reporters manage to talk to Samsung's NEON digital avatar

Even before the official announcement of NEON at CES 2020, videos appeared on the Web demonstrating the capabilities of this project. Many have suggested that NEON will replace Bixby voice assistant, but in fact it’s about artificial people (avatars) who are able to maintain dialogue, even without access to the Internet. It is, rather, a demonstration of the technology of visualizing human images, rather than creating a virtual assistant.
The project is being developed by Samsung Technology and Advanced Research Lab (STAR Labs) under the leadership of Pranav Mistry. Project goal: the creation of artificial entities that are able to copy human behavior and have their image. Neons are “digital entities” that are trained in the process of interaction with a living person, and, as information accumulates, form their own image and base of memories.
In the future, Neons can replace teachers, television presenters, financial advisors, and even film actors. Each Neon will have its own unique habits and behavioral style. Neons are, rather, a new kind of being, which is a digital copy of a person.
However, while the mass of information remains closed to the press and IT-specialists. Pranav Mistry did not explain in all details the principle of operation of the technologies that underlie NEON. So far, only the fact that avatars work on the basis of two solutions is known: CORE R3 and SPECTRA. The first solution provides responsiveness and rendering of Neons in real time (they are able to respond to user actions in fractions of a second), and the tasks of SPECTRA include learning, emotions and memory of Neons.
The creators of the NEON project promise to launch a beta version before the end of this year. They say that interested partners will gain access to NEON.
The NEON demonstration at CES 2020 in Las Vegas takes place at a separate stand, as this is an independent project by Samsung. However, HARMAN, the largest subsidiary of the South Korean techgiant, is also represented in a separate booth.
Thus, if we summarize all the exhibition areas of Samsung divisions, then its representation at CES 2020 will far exceed the expositions of even the most powerful competitors.

Hackers managed to steal information about the Samsung NEON project a few days before its official presentation at CES 2020

The biggest tech show of the year is almost upon us as CES 2020 is about to get underway in Las Vegas. One of the sights on show will be a new Samsung AI innovation called NEON, and now we've got some idea of what it looks like.
We've already seen several teasers for the project, with terms like "artificial human" getting dropped by the official NEON Twitter account. Now we've got some visualizations too.
Neon project lead Pranav Mistry has tweeted out some graphics showing NEON in action – and it appears we're looking at a digital avatar with a rather plain taste in clothing.
As for what this virtual creation is going to be able to do, Mistry says it's able to autonomously create new expressions, new movements, and new dialogue, so this looks like it's several steps up from Bixby.
NEON, a product of Star (Samsung Technology & Advanced Research) Labs, is associated with several patents mentioning virtual characters that are able to go beyond what their original programming tells them to do.
It would appear that these avatars are destined for use in hotels, entertainment venues, kiosks and so on, able to reply to your questions even if the system has never come across them before.
Guest expert at the Samsung World Newsblog Nikolay Iznov believes that we are on the verge of another digital revolution.
“It seems that Samsung is preparing to outperform its competitors in an unexpected way by introducing a unique technology for creating special effects and generating realistic virtual images (avatars) in real time using available computing devices, including smartphones. If this is the case, then after a while you will be able to make a semblance of Hollywood at home, creating virtual actors and sets. In this case, one person will be enough to play a story with many participants. Thus, we have incredible opportunities for creative expression.
Unfortunately, it is not yet known what computing power is required to realize all the capabilities of NEON and on the basis of which operating system this software operates. It is also unclear what the cost of NEON technology is and to what extent it will be available to ordinary users.
Nevertheless, the vector of Samsung’s research movement is understandable and there is no doubt that it will be implemented everywhere in the foreseeable future,” the expert noted.
We might not be quite at the Westworld stage just yet, but as artificial intelligence continues to develop, get ready for some pretty cool concepts and demos to appear throughout 2020.

Предстоящая выставка CES 2020, которая является крупнейшей в мире витриной технологических достижений, будет использована Samsung для демонстрации целого ряда передовых разработок.
Так, например, инкубатор стартапов C-Lab, принадлежащий корпорации, традиционно представит серию наиболее интересных решений в области управления электронными девайсами, различные полезные приспособления для людей с ограниченными возможностями и другие продукты.
В рамках CES 2020 Samsung должен показать более доступные по цене "облегчённые" версии своих флагманских смартфонов Galaxy S10 Lite и Galaxy Note10 Lite, которые, однако, получат ряд улучшений по сравнению с базовыми моделями. Например, ожидается появление в камерах этих аппаратов наиболее совершенной системы оптической стабилизации.
Много сюрпризов будет представлено в разделе телевизоров. Помимо моделей на базе передовой технологиии MicroLED, будут показаны полностью безрамочные QLED-флагманы серии Zero Bezel, а также прототипы аппаратов, в которых экран способен изгибаться внутрь и наружу. Предполагается, что в них будут использоваться дисплеи нового типа, о которых ранее уже ходили слухи, а именно QD-OLED (гибридная технология на основе самоизлучающих органических светодиодов с квантовой сеткой).
Не исключено, что Samsung привезёт в Лас-Вегас и 5G-версию своего актуального флагманского планшета Galaxy Tab S6, который дебютировал в конце прошлого года. Кроме того, будут представлены новые модели портативных ноутбуков и игровых компьютеров.
Разумеется, на CES 2020 Samsung продемонстрирует новейшие модели бытовой техники на базе операционной системы TIZEN, в частности смарт-холодильники семейства Family Hub, которые стали ещё умнее и удобнее в эксплуатации.
Помимо роботизированных устройств, бытовой электроники и самых инновационных дисплеев, с особым нетерпением техногики ожидают подробностей о проекте NEON - "цифровом аватаре" с искусственным интеллектом (AI).
Проанализировав патентные заявки Samsung, связанные с NEON, нидерландский портал Let's Go Digital сделал вывод, что это целая серия инноваций по внедрению передовых решений в телевизионное и кинопроизводство (лёгкое создание спецэффектов, виртуальных актёров и т.д.), а также формирование персонализированных цифровых аватаров пользователей мобильных и прочих смарт-девайсов.
Но, в любом случае, все подробности будут раскрыты топ-менеджерами Samsung только на презентации в Лас-Вегасе 6 января.

CES 2020: Samsung's exposition will be the largest and most interesting

The world is entering a new decade, so the South Korean electronic giant decided to mark this event especially brightly.
The upcoming CES 2020, which is the world's largest showcase of technological advances, will be used by Samsung to showcase a range of cutting-edge developments. For example, the corporation-owned C-Lab startup incubator will traditionally present a series of the most interesting solutions in the field of electronic device management, various useful devices for people with disabilities and other products.
As part of CES 2020, Samsung is expected to show more affordable versions of its flagship smartphones Galaxy S10 Lite and Galaxy Note10 Lite, which, however, will receive a number of improvements compared to the base models.
For example, the most advanced optical stabilization system is expected to appear in the cameras of these devices.
It is possible that Samsung will bring to Las Vegas the 5G version of its current flagship Galaxy Tab S6 tablet, which debuted at the end of last year. In addition, new models of portable laptops and gaming computers will be presented.
Many surprises will be presented in the TV section. In addition to models based on advanced MicroLED technology, fully frameless QLED flagships of the Zero Bezel series will be shown, as well as prototypes of devices in which the screen is able to bend in and out. It is assumed that they will use displays of a new type, which had previously been rumored, namely QD-OLED (a hybrid technology based on self-emitting organic LEDs with a quantum grid).
Of course, at CES 2020, Samsung will demonstrate the latest models of household appliances based on the TIZEN operating system, in particular Family Hub series refrigerators, which have become even smarter and more convenient to use.
In addition to robotic devices, consumer electronics, and the most innovative displays, tech enthusiasts are looking forward to details about the NEON project, a "digital avatar" with artificial intelligence (AI).
After analyzing Samsung's patent applications related to NEON, the Dutch portal Let's Go Digital concluded that this is a series of innovations to introduce advanced solutions in television and film production (easy creation of special effects, virtual actors), as well as the creation of personalized digital avatars of users of mobile and other smart devices.
But, in any case, all the details will be disclosed by Samsung top managers only at the presentation in Las Vegas on January 6.

Интрига вокруг презентации загадочной системы искусственного интеллекта под названием NEON от Samsung вызывает неподдельный интерес у любителей современных технологий. Несколько дней назад в прессе появились первые сообщения о том, что южнокорейский техногигант готовит прорыв в этом сегменте и намерен представить NEON в рамках крупнейшей выставки потребительской электроники CES 2020, которая стартует в американском Лас-Вегасе 7 января.
Чтобы развеять домыслы некоторых СМИ о том, что NEON - это некая вариация интеллектуального голосового помощника Bixby (ныне он присутствует на многих смарт-девайсах Samsung), в официальных блогах проекта сотрудники корпорации уточнили, что NEON - это не Bixby, а нечто совершенно другое. Судя по опубликованным тизерам, речь может пойти о прототипе "искусственного человека" по имени NEON.
Так это или нет, нам предстоит узнать в ходе пресс-конференции Samsung, которая состоится в рамках CES 2020 уже через несколько дней.

Samsung: AI NEON is not Bixby, but a completely new product

Samsung has unveiled a new top secret AI project, and it promises to bring something completely new to the niche. NEON is an AI-focused system, and Samsung mysteriously asks users that visit the project’s website whether they have “ever met an ‘ARTIFICIAL’”.
When we say that the project is mysterious, this is by no means an exaggeration. Samsung has released almost no information about Neon, apart from a rather sketchy press release, and a distinctive logo. But the Korean electronics giant plans to unveil the project at CES 2020, where no doubt more information about the Neon will become apparent.
It is not hugely surprising that Samsung is investing heavily in the artificial intelligence niche, considering how important this technology is becoming.
Samsung’s Technology and Advanced Research Labs (STAR Labs) announced the Neon project via social media, while a brand new @Neondotlife Twitter handle has been created for Neon as well. Samsung has been keen to dissociate the Neon project from Bixby, stating via its official Twitter account that “Neon is NOT about Bixby.”
The @Neondotlife instead asserted that “Neon = ARTIFICIAL HUMAN.” But as absolutely no substantial information was provided on exactly what this means, it can be considered very much a teaser proposal currently.
Samsung has experienced massive success in the mobile marketplace recently, with its Galaxy range of smartphones becoming the most popular on the planet. This has occurred at a time when the smartphone market is generally receding, with its great rival Apple having experienced stymied sales of the iPhone in recent quarters.
So any credible artificial intelligence project would obviously support the existing Samsung Galaxy range. However, tweets published by Samsung do at least imply that Neon is rather more ambitious than simply an artificial assistant.
The good news is that we won’t have to wait a huge amount of time for more information on Neon. CES 2020 is only 11 days away, and Samsung will have to release something more substantial on Neon at this time. Whether we’ll be lucky enough to get a holistic impression of the whole product remains to be seen, but we should at least get an idea of what Neon is trying to achieve.

Незадолго до старта крупнейшей в мире выставки потребительской электроники CES 2020, которая откроется через 12 дней в Лас-Вегасе (США), профильные информационные ресурсы облетела новость о том, что Samsung, вероятно, готовит для этого мероприятия технологическую сенсацию.
Как сообщает PCmag, в некоторых популярных соцсетях уже развёрнута кампания, призванная привлечь внимание публики к загадочному изобретению под названием NEON. Несколько изданий сообщили, что это некая продвинутая форма мультиязыкового искусственного интеллекта (AI), которую разрабатывает независимое подразделение Samsung STAR Labs, базирующееся в Индии. Во главе STAR Labs с октября числится 38-летний Пранав Мистри, глобальный топ-менеджер южнокорейского техногиганта, ранее ответственный за успешный запуск первых носимых устройств серии Gear. Косвенно это свидетельствует о том, что в Samsung придают большое значение результатам работы STAR Labs и намерены использовать NEON в своих будущих продуктах.
Пока нет полной ясности относительно того, является ли NEON эволюцией уже существующего голосового помощника Bixby, или же это совершенно отдельная разработка, ведущаяся параллельно.
Говорят, что NEON будет полагаться на облачные вычисления через ультраскоростные сети мобильной связи 5G. Таким образом, от конечного устройства, находящегося в распоряжении пользователя, не потребуется огромной вычислительной мощности, поскольку все основные операции будут возложены на суперкомпьютеры, установленные в дата-центрах Samsung.
Некоторые инсайдеры также полагают, что на CES 2020 специалисты корпорации покажут прототип домашнего робота с AI NEON, общение с которым может заменить общение с живым человеком.
Интересно, что к NEON привлекают внимание не только специалисты из STAR Labs, но также многие знаменитости, например кинорежиссёр Шекхар Капур, который в своих твитах намекает, что "скоро фантастика станет реальностью" и связывает этот прорыв именно с разработкой NEON.
Насколько оправданы такие утверждения, мы узнаем уже совсем скоро, поскольку предварительные презентации для специалистов и прессы на CES 2020  стартуют уже 7 января.

CES 2020: Samsung can demonstrate artificial intelligence NEON, which can hardly be distinguished from human

Samsung appears to have a new artificial intelligence (AI) driven product in the pipeline called Neon. The new product is currently in the works at Samsung Technology & Advanced Research Labs (STAR Labs), which is an independent entity of Samsung Electronics. Notably, the South Korean company already has Bixby, a digital assistant, which was introduced in 2017 and is available across a range of products including smartphones and home appliances. Neon, however, is likely come as a new AI offering by the company to expand its presence in consumer AI space. STAR Labs led by India-born Pranav Mistry will unveil Neon at CES 2020 in Las Vegas next month.
While Samsung hasn't provided any details around Neon, STAR Labs is teasing its arrival through social media channels. A website with domain name Neon.life has also been created that doesn't reveal any details except showcasing a tagline saying, “Have you ever met an ‘Artificial'?”
Some of the recent tweets posted by the official Neon account on Twitter suggests that the new AI offering would provide multilingual experiences and support Hindi among other international languages.
Separately, Pranav Mistry has teased Neon through his Twitter account. Mistry, 38, who joined STAR Labs as its President and CEO in October, was previously working at Samsung as the Global Vice President and is known for launching the Galaxy Gear as the company's first smartwatch.
Neon is teased to offer a “human-level AI” experience. However, it is unclear whether it will be available as a digital assistant or something completely different, like an AI-powered robot. Bixby, an existing AI-powered digital assistant from the company has been facing a tough competition from Amazon Alexa, Google Assistant, and Apple's Siri. 
As reported by PCMag, many celebrities including film director Shekhar Kapur have taken to Twitter to create some hype of Neon ahead of its official launch.
That being said, Samsung's STAR Labs is likely to announce specifics at CES 2020 that will begin from January 7.
