Galaxy

Galaxy Watch.
Samsung Gear VR.

Samsung Galaxy 360 trademark hints at new branding for the TIZEN-powered camera

Samsung is planning to rebrand its Gear 360 camera lineup into the Galaxy 360. Originally submitted with the United States Patent and Trademark Office last Thursday, the IP documentation is indicative of another TIZEN-powered 360-degree camera being in the works, with Samsung also relating it to virtual reality headsets, smartphones, tablets, and several other types of consumer electronics, which is in line with the possibility of this being a Gear 360 successor given how the previously released cameras were compatible with a wide variety of devices.
Samsung hasn’t refreshed its 360-degree camera series since the spring of 2017 and was relatively quiet on the VR front this year as it hasn’t even introduced a new Gear VR headset. The move away from the Gear moniker the newly spotted trademark suggests corresponds with the company’s recent activity in the wearable segment; e.g. instead of launching the Gear S3 successor called the Gear S4, the firm introduced a new Galaxy Watch range this summer.
Samsung appears to be consolidating its product lineups under the Galaxy brand, with the move coming after the Galaxy S9 range recorded what the tech giant deemed were slower-than-expected sales. The Galaxy name remains one of the most valuable product brands on the planet and Samsung’s recent changes to its naming schemes are likely meant to ensure it keeps that title with a more varied portfolio.

Samsung Launches New Initiative “Pilot Season” to Ignite Exclusive Episodic VR Content in Samsung VR Video

Pilot Episodes for Six Exclusive Original Series Launch Today on Samsung VR Video service on Gear VR

Samsung Electronics America, Inc., a leader in mobile VR with its award-winning Gear VR headset, launched Pilot Season, a new initiative aimed at infusing exclusive original episodic Virtual Reality (VR) content into the Samsung VR Video service. Pilot Season adds to the company’s efforts in expanding VR content offerings while driving growth within the independent VR filmmaker community.
Through the program, a select set of indie filmmakers received a grant from Samsung to create original VR episodes and were offered the opportunity to utilize the 360 Round camera, Samsung’s professional 360-degree camera. In addition, filmmakers receive exclusive distribution via a dedicated channel on the Samsung VR Video service.
To find the Pilot Season debut episodes, with a Samsung Gear VR with Controller, powered by Oculus, coupled with a compatible Galaxy device such as Galaxy S9 or S9+, head to the Oculus store and navigate to Samsung VR Video service. Within the service, users will find the Pilot Season in the “Featured” section.

Pilot Season content includes:

*“&Design” (Sibling Rivalry and Curious Octopus)

An original episodic series about design that will change the way we look at the world. The series presents design in its intersection with science, technology and anthropology, weaving an array of items that link each episode by a universally humanistic theme. With renowned and charismatic design curator Paola Antonelli as our guide, the series will take audiences on a captivating, fun, and often surprising journey around the globe to reveal the stories of different projects and the Artists behind them. From designed objects we rely on but rarely think about, to bizarre inventions, to artifacts from other cultures, “&Design” will invite us to see the world in a new way.

*“Bro Bots” (Breaking Fourth)

A scripted sci-fi comedy series in VR, set in a New York City of the future. In the not-so-distant future… robots are everywhere. They talk like us. They walk like us. And they have really big personalities. Two British robots – Otis and Roberto – arrive in New York and join the NYPD. Otis acts like a Downton Abbey butler. Roberto is rough and tough, from the other side of the tracks. They are best friends. Bro Bots is an irreverent, quirky, VR buddy-comedy series.

*“The Interpretation of Dreams” (Graham Sack & Sensorium)

In 1899, Sigmund Freud published his magnum opus, The Interpretation of Dreams, which shocked the world and forever changed our understanding of dreams and the unconscious mind. This episodic narrative fiction series reimagines each of Freud’s original case studies — “the Ratman”, “Dora”, “Anna O”, “Irma’s Injection” — as visually luxurious, psychologically complex, and emotionally haunting immersive VR dreamscapes. Each episode unfolds as a mystery to be solved. A patient arrives afflicted by a mysterious symptom — insomnia, recurring nightmares, the inability to speak or swallow. In search of a cure, the viewer enters their dreams, which are populated by symbolic objects and characters with hidden meanings. Federico Fellini famously called film “a dream we dream with our eyes open.” VR provides a vast new vocabulary for the exploration and visualization of the unconscious, from the construction of surreal landscapes to the distortion of time, space, perception, and physical law. Written and Directed by Graham Sack. Technical Direction by Sensorium. Original Composition by Tim Fain.

*“Lightcatcher” (Occupied VR, RSA VR)

The Earth is evolving and digesting our human footprint. Now humanity has a choice—stay or leave. Lightcatcher is an odyssey that revolves around earth and its people in the year 2150. Get lost with five adventurers as they travel through unique environments—enduring hardships and triumphs in the new world. Explore subterranean caves, soar in zero-gravity and grapple sky high canyon walls. Lightcatcher is a young adult adventure saga that brings you on a journey combining elements of adventure, romance and sci-fi. The series is designed as a virtual reality franchise that will captivate a new generation of fans.

*“Sam’s Surreal Gems” (RSA VR, Hey Wonderful)

Set in a collection of real world locations, this fresh, funny and irreverent VR series directed by Sam Cadman challenges its viewers to spot eight surreal and unexpected Easter eggs hidden within each episode. Sam’s Surreal Gems is the antithesis of overly familiar futuristic and fantastical VR, rather, this series will celebrate the truly entertaining and wonderfully funny possibilities within the real world already around us. Each set of surreal gems will have been carefully rehearsed and seamlessly choreographed so as to happen in a single uninterrupted take lasting no more than 2-3 minutes. These gems will be arranged so that they build in spectacle and scale, as well as darting around all 360 degrees of the VR space. The same troupe of actors will appear in each location/episode – playing their characters with a natural and understated ease.

 *“Voyages – Pilot” (Kaleidoscope)

A virtual reality animation that takes you on an epic journey from birth to death. Comprised of six distinct movements, “Voyages – Pilot” guides you through the emotional arc of an entire life. Experience what it feels like to be born, to grow up, to grow old, and to eventually die. The pilot features original music from Amon Tobin, Little Dragon, Jonny Greenwood, Elliot Cole and Roomful of Teeth.

National Association of Broadcasters Conference (NAB 2018).

Samsung 360 Round Brings Easy, High-Quality Capture and Post-Production to 3D Video

LAS VEGAS – APRIL 9, 2018 — At the National Association of Broadcasters Conference (NAB), Samsung is showcasing an enhanced Samsung 360 Round camera solution, including updates to its livestreaming and post-production software at NAB Booth N3406VR. The new solution gives professional video creators the tools they need—from capture to post-production—to tell immersive, engaging 360-degree and 3D stories for film and broadcast.
“At Samsung, we’ve been innovating in the VR technology space for many years, including introducing the 360 Round camera with its unique ruggedized design, and superior low light and livestreaming capabilities late last year,” said Eric McCarty, Vice President, Mobile B2B Product Marketing, Samsung Electronics America. “We’re excited to offer this enhanced solution to producers, directors, and creators of all types that helps them deliver seamless creativity, whether in a business or creative environment.”

Quality control at the moment of capture

The Samsung 360 Round delivers real-time 3D video to PCs using the 360 Round’s bundled software so video creators can now view live video on their mobile devices using the 360 Round live preview app1. In addition, the 360 Round live preview app allows creators to remotely control the camera settings, via wifi router, from afar. 2 The updated 360 Round PC software now provides dual monitor support, which allows the editor to make adjustments and show the results on a separate monitor dedicated to the director.

Crisp, Immersive Video Regardless of Condition

360 Round offers a vast array of features to ensure creators capture stunning, realistic content in a wide range of shooting conditions, including low light environments and high-action scenes. With a rolling shutter, 11.7 stops of dynamic range, f1.8 aperture size, and now, limiting luminance levels to 16-135, noise reduction and sharpness adjustments, as well as a hardware IR filter—it’s possible to get a clear shot with 360 Round in almost no light. The 360 Round also offers advanced stabilization software and ability to color correct on the fly, with an intuitive, easy to use histogram. In addition, users can set up profiles for each shot and save the camera settings, ensuring consistent quality and cutting down on the time required to prep each shot.

Removing Stitchline Pain Points

The 360 Round comes equipped with Samsung’s advanced Stitching software3, which seamlessly weaves together video from each of the 360 Round’s 17 lenses. Creators can stitch, preview and broadcast in one simple step on a PC4 without the need for additional software. The 360 Round also enables fine tuning of seamlines during a live production, such as moving them away from objects in real time, and calibrating individual stitchlines to fix misalignments. In addition, a new local warping feature allows for individual seamline calibrations in post-production, without requiring a global adjustment to all seamlines, giving creators quick and easy, fine grain control of the final visuals.

Improved process and output for both livestreaming and post production

The 360 Round delivers real-time 4K x 4K (3D) streaming with minimal latency.5 SDI capture card support enables livestreaming through multiple cameras and broadcasting equipment with no additional encoding/decoding required, and with the newest update, now further streamlines the switching workflow for live productions with audio over SDI.6 This provides producers with less complex events (one producer managing audio and video switching) a single switching source as the production transitions from camera to camera. In addition, 360 Round offers a number of new features to ensure video output is of the quality the creator intends, such as:

* Ability to record, stream, and save raw files simultaneously, making the process of creating dailies and managing live productions easier. Many production teams like to distribute the event as video-on-demand (VOD) post show. Creators can now save the raw files to make further improvements to live production recordings, and create a higher quality post-produced version.
* Live streaming support for HLS over HTTP, which adds another transport streaming protocol in addition to the RTMP and RTSP protocols. HLS over HTTP eliminates the need to modify some restrictive enterprise firewall policies and is a more resilient protocol in unreliable networks.
* Ability to upload direct (via 360 Round software) to Samsung VR creator account, as well as Facebook and YouTube, once the files are exported—ensuring creators are reaching their audiences instantly with their immersive creations.
