SDC 2018: Samsung запускает Linux на своих флагманских мобильных устройствах

Относительно недавно на базе Linux существовал проект под названием Ubuntu Touch, в рамках которого эту систему пытались адаптировать для смартфонов и превратить её в универсальную, которую можно было использовать и в режиме стационарного PC.
Однако несколько лет поисков оптимального решения истощили финансовые ресурсы компании-разработчика Canonical, что не позволило довести проект до получения желаемого результата, хотя саму систему можно было опробовать. И здесь на помощь пришёл Samsung с его многомиллиардными бюджетами.
Как известно, южнокорейский техногигант давно вынашивает планы распространения единой "бесшовной" платформы на все устройства. Его собственная TIZEN OS, также базирующаяся на Linux, уже портирована на большинство устройств, выпускаемых под этой маркой. Проект Ubuntu заинтересовал Samsung, поскольку он успел "обрасти" довольно большим количеством разработчиков-энтузиастов, желающих продолжать развитие платформы. Так как проекты TIZEN и Ubuntu концептуально близки, это должно помочь активизировать направление создания универсальных гаджетов, успешно заменяющих мобильный коммуникатор и домашний компьютер.  
Показанное в прошлом году приложение Linux on DeX наконец добралось до релиза. В качестве бэта-версии оно будет доступно уже с 12 ноября.
Пока это приложение даёт возможность в режиме DeX использовать только дистрибутив Ubuntu 16.04 LTS. Кроме того, запустить ПО можно только на смартфоне Galaxy Note9 и планшете Galaxy Tab S4. Ещё одно ограничение — приложения должны быть скомпилированы для 64-разрядных CPU ARM.
В Samsung отмечают, что для запуска необходимо минимум 8Гб свободного дискового пространства и 4Гб оперативной памяти.
Согласно отзывам специалистов, оценивавших работу связки Ubuntu/Samsung DeX в ходе конференции SDC 2018, завершившейся в калифорнийском Сан-Франциско 8 ноября, производительность и возможности этого решения оказались на высоте, о чём было сообщено в официальном пресс-релизе Samsung.   
Будем надеяться, что начало этому благородному делу положено и проект будет набирать обороты при наличии мощной научной и финансовой поддержки южнокорейского техногиганта. Как сообщается, "Samsung работает в тесном контакте с Canonical", что вызвало прилив энтузиазма в Linux-сообществе.

SDC18: Linux on DeX Will Make It Easier for Developers to Code on the Go

When it was first demoed at last year’s Samsung Developer Conference in San Francisco, Linux on DeX generated significant buzz within the developer community by presenting a simple and convenient way to use Samsung DeX to build apps within a Linux development environment.
The combination of Samsung DeX and the Linux on DeX app adds new levels of flexibility to developers’ work by allowing them to connect their Galaxy device to a monitor using just an HDMI adapter, and instantly enjoy a fuller computing experience when on the go.
Linux on DeX frees developers from their desks by allowing them to access a PC-like Linux development environment anytime, anywhere. The app enables them to work on both Android and Ubuntu-based Linux distributions. Samsung provides a modified version of Ubuntu for Linux on DeX users, and has been working closely with Canonical, the company behind Ubuntu, to provide the best experience.
After testing the app on-site at the event, SDC18 attendee Ericka Jackson said she was impressed by the level of flexibility that Linux on DeX provides.
“I play around with a lot of microcontrollers like Arduino and Raspberry Pi, so being able to have Linux on a more portable platform will be a lot of fun, because then I can take it and access Linux environment outside of my own network,” said Jackson. “It was really impressive. I’m looking forward to playing with it.”
Linux on DeX will be available as a private beta beginning on November 12. Users who are interested in joining the beta program may register here starting on November 7.

Теперь же стали известны и его основные характеристики: IPS-диплей с диагональю 10,5 дюйма и разрешением 1920х1200 пикселей, SoC Snapdragon 450, 3Гб ОЗУ и 32Гб флэш-памяти. Разумеется объём памяти можно расширить картами microSD. Кроме того, новинка получит камеры с разрешением 8 и 5Мп и аккумулятор ёмкостью 7300 мА·ч.
Планшет лишён физической кнопки и, вероятно, получит функцию Face Unlock.
Бюджетные параметры этой модели предполагают её использование, прежде всего, в учебных заведениях, а также в корпоративных целях, где не требуется высокая производительность таких устройств. Подойдёт она и для семейного применения: интернет-сёрфинг, просмотр видео и не слишком "тяжёлые" игры.
Galaxy Tab A2 XL станет одним из немногих бюджетных планшетов Samsung, который поддерживает работу с фирменным интеллектуальным голосовым помощником Bixby. 
Следующая новинка, анонс которой предполагается уже в начале августа, - Samsung Galaxy Tab S4. Этот планшет должен получить мощный процессор Qualcomm Snapdragon 835, 4Гб ОЗУ и 64Гб флэш-памяти (с возможностью расширения картами microSD), Super AMOLED дисплей с диагональю 10,5 дюйма и разрешением 2560х1600 пикселей, камеры с разрешением матриц 13 и 8Мп, а также аккумулятор ёмкостью 7300 мА•ч. Конечно же имеется поддержка голосового помощника Bixby и несколько вариантов быстрой разблокировки устройства. Кроме того, аппарт оснащён микроакустикой высокого класса от легендарного австрийского брэнда AKG (с марта 2017 года принадлежит Samsung).  
Galaxy Tab S4 рассчитан на подготовленных пользователей, предъявляющих к устройству повышенные требования в плане производительности. В ряде случаев такой аппарат вполне может заменить полноценный ноутбук, поскольку в качестве опции к нему будет прилагаться подставка-клавиатура и даже интерактивный стилус.
Новые модели планшетов Samsung (как бюджетные, так и премиальные) будут поставляться в различных модификациях - с Wi-Fi модулем, а также с Wi-Fi и LTE.

Samsung Galaxy Tab A2 XL specs

It’s expected to be one of the few non-flagship Galaxy devices to get a Bixby button.
The Galaxy Tab A2 XL has a 10.5-inch LCD display with a resolution of 1920×1200 pixels. Under the hood, there’s an octa-core Snapdragon 450 SoC paired with 3GB of RAM, along with 32GB of storage. The rear camera is an 8-megapixel sensor while the front has a 5-megapixel camera; powering all of this is a 7,300 mAh battery that can be fast charged via a microUSB port. On the software front, you get Android 8.1 Oreo. The tablet will come in both Wi-Fi-only and LTE-enabled flavors (model numbers SM-T590 and SM-T595 respectively).

Now, the Tab A2 XL is expected to be yet another Samsung device without any physical navigation keys. But there isn’t going to be anything like an iris scanner or a rear-mounted fingerprint sensor, so facial recognition is probably going to be the only secure unlock option other than the standard PIN and pattern options.

Galaxy Tab S4 video hints at imminent launch

The video does show us the 16:10 display, which many of us have been asking Samsung to bring back to its flagship tablet line. There’s no fingerprint sensor, either, replaced by an iris scanner and facial recognition. As we had exclusively revealed, the Galaxy Tab S4 specs include a 10.5-inch (256×1600) Super AMOLED display, Snapdragon 835 SoC, 4GB of RAM, 64GB of storage, a 7,300 mAh battery, and 13-megapixel and 8-megapixel rear and front cameras. There are AKG tuned speakers, support for Samsung’s DeX platform, and a Bluetooth-enabled S Pen as a separate accessory. The Tab S4 will run Android 8.1 Oreo out of the box, a first for any Samsung device.

Один за другим на просторах интернета "засветились" сразу 2 гаджета, которые должны стать одними из фаворитов осеннего сезона.
Накануне ресурс AndroidHeadlines обнародовал официальный пресс-рендер (по крайней мере так сообщают источники) нового планшета Galaxy Tab S4 (2918), а сегодня портал Gizmochina показал, как будет выглядеть очередной флагманский смартфон Samsung Galaxy Note9.
Что касается их характеристик, то, согласно предварительным данным, планшет  4-го поколения серии Galaxy Tab S получит отличный Super AMOLED-дисплей с соотношением сторон 16:10, уменьшенные, по сравнению с предшественниками, рамки, а также избавится от физических кнопок на лицевой стороне, которые будут заменены на виртуальные. При этом эксперты гадают, где может быть размещён сканер отпечатков пальцев. Не исключено, что дактилоскоп будет отсутствовать вовсе, так как его заменят системы сканирования лица и радужной оболочки глаз. В то же время допускается вероятность того, что сканер будет интегрирован непосредственно в экран. В таком случае это будет первое мобильной устройство Samsung, оснащённое столь продвинутой опцией.
Этот топовый планшет получит чипсет Snapdragon 835, 4Гб ОЗУ, 64Гб встроенной флэш-памяти, батарею на 7300 мАч, 13-Мп и 8-Мп камеры, Android 8.1 Oreo «из коробки», поддержку DeX-терминала и звук от легендарной австрийской компании AKG (ныне принадлежит Samsung).

Что касается Galaxy Note9, то здесь также прочти всё известно. Его внешний не будет сильно отличаться от своего популярного предшественника Galaxy Note8. Тем не менее, новые иллюстрации позволяют получить более полное представление о новом гаджете.
Galaxy Note9 имеет изогнутый по бокам экран с тонкой рамкой сверху и почти отсутствующей рамкой снизу. На задней стороне расположена двойная камера, модули которой ориентированы инженерами Samsung горизонтально, в отличие от прошлогодней модели. Ниже размещён сканер отпечатков пальцев.
По бокам расположены кнопки для регулировки громкости, управления питанием и активации виртуального помощника Bixby.
Согласно предварительным данным, в базовой версии девайс оснащён экраном Super AMOLED Infinity Display размером 6,4 дюйма. В качестве "двигателя" предусмотрены варианты на SoC Snapdragon 845 и Exynos 9810. Объём ОЗУ составит 6Гб, флэш-памяти — 128Гб, ёмкость аккумулятора — 4000 мА∙ч. В более дорогих модификациях предполагается наличие 8Гб оперативной памяти,  а также 256Гб и даже 512Гб флэш-памяти.
Главным изменением в этой модели подвергся стилус, который, согласно просочившейся информации, бкдет поддерживать связь по Bluetooth, значительно расширив его возможности. Например, с помощью стилуса можно будет управлять воспроизведением аудиотрэков, таймером и т.д.
Анонс Galaxy Note9 намечен на 9 августа в Нью-Йорке.

Samsung Galaxy Tab S4 Official Render Confirms Design Rumors

Here’s a good look at the Samsung Galaxy Tab S4. This is a tablet that has been widely reported on in the last few months and one that’s expected to launch soon enough. Up until now, however, almost no leaked images have come through. To remedy this situation, here’s an official press render which provides a very clean look at the front and back of the new Galaxy Tab S4. The image was provided to AndroidHeadlines by a reliable source.
Previously, it had been suggested the Galaxy Tab S4 will launch in two colors, black and gray. While AndroidHeadlines cannot speak of the latter, this image does confirm black will certainly be one of the main color options when the tablet becomes available. From the back, there seems to be very little difference when comparing the new model to the Galaxy Tab S3 as they both sport the same overall design, and the same rear camera placement. Although the logo on the back of the device has changed somewhat as it has now moved further down. Resulting in the “Tuned by AKG” logo seen on the Tab S3 replaced with “Samsung | Tuned by AKG.” This paints a slightly different picture to the recent FCC image that surfaced which now suggests the one used in the FCC filing was more likely a Tab S3 placeholder image. The power and volume buttons on the side remain in an identical position to the previous model. No change.
The front of the Galaxy Tab S4 is another story altogether. As this is where some very obvious changes can be seen. Firstly, the Galaxy Tab S4 is all about the display as the screen is now far more prominent than on any earlier Galaxy Tab S model. Previous rumors have pointed to a 10.5-inch panel, and if correct, this would mean the display is bigger than that found on the Galaxy Tab S3 (9.7-inches). Again, if correct, then it seems likely this tablet does not feature a traditional aspect ratio as the display-to-overall-size difference does not tally with the Galaxy Tab S3. The knock-on effects of this are equally as important to note, as in addition to the display stretching out to cover more of the front of the device, all of the other front-facing elements (bar the camera) have vanished when compared to the Galaxy Tab S3. This means no “Samsung” logo on the top bezel. One of the reasons for this might be the inclusion of an iris scanner. This is a feature that had previously been rumored for the Galaxy Tab S4, and although this should not be taken as a confirmation – it does very much look like an iris scanner is on show with this latest render – positioned in a similar place to where it’s located on the Galaxy S smartphone line.
More notably, however, is the seemingly complete absence of a home button on the chin. While the Samsung logo may be present when the finished product is unveiled, based on the image provided, the chin does not look sufficiently large enough to comfortably house a home key. So, it seems highly unlikely a physical home button will be on offer with the new model. This would mark a major design departure for the Galaxy Tab S line, and one which immediately raises another question – what about the fingerprint sensor? Previously, it had been expected the Tab S4 would feature a fingerprint sensor embedded in the home button, although without a physical home key, that seems less likely to be the case. Of course, Samsung may opt for an under-display fingerprint sensor, and especially as it seems as though virtual buttons are going to be in use. But if that is the case, then it would be a very big feature for the Galaxy Tab S4 as Samsung has yet to launch a product with an under-display fingerprint sensor. While the Galaxy Note 9 is coming up and expected to launch either with or before the Tab S4, the rumors on the Galaxy Note 9 seem very undecided on whether the new phone will feature the under-display solution or not. Based on this image, however, it would seem clear the Galaxy Tab S4 either does feature an under-display sensor, or it does not have a sensor at all. While a side-mounted fingerprint reader embedded into the tablet’s power button may be possible in theory — given how both Sony and Motorola managed to commercialize this type of solution in the past — it seems less likely here as there seems to be no deviation in the size of the power key compared to the previous model.
At present, there is nothing new to add when it comes to the specs but drawing on the rumors that have come through to date, the Galaxy Tab S4 is expected to feature 4GB RAM, 64GB storage, a Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 SoC, a 7,300 mAh capacity battery, and Android 8.1 (Oreo). This is in addition to a 13-megapixel rear camera, and an 8-megapixel front-facing camera. While most of these can be considered natural improvements considering what the Galaxy Tab S3 offered, the Galaxy Tab S4 is also slated to come loaded with some additional features, such as Samsung DeX support. In spite of Samsung already having announced an August 9 product launch, most indications point to an IFA 2018 unveiling for the Galaxy Tab S4.

Samsung will be bringing design changes on the Galaxy S10 as it will be arriving as the 10th anniversary Galaxy S smartphone from the company. The Note 10 arriving later in 2019 is likely to sport an enhanced design too.
Coming back to the Galaxy Note 9, it will be arriving with some improved internals. Leaks that have surfaced in the past few months have revealed specs like 6.4-inch S-AMOLED Infinity Display, Snapdragon 845 / Exynos 9810 SoC, 6 GB of RAM, 128 GB of RAM, dual camera with variable aperture and 4,000mAh battery. There could be an 8 GB RAM variant with 256 GB or 512 GB of internal storage.
The S Pen stylus of the Note 9 is expected to carry support for Bluetooth connectivity that will make it possible to use it to do non-stylus related tasks like controlling music playback and long-range selfie timer.

В базе данных FCC планшет маркирован как SM-T835. Согласно результатам тестирования, девайс  поддерживает работу в сетях 4G. Габариты: 249,3х164,3 мм. Стоит также отметить наличие модуля Bluetooth 5.0, одинарной основной камеры в центральной верхней части задней панели и звуковой системы производства австрийской компании AKG (ныне принадлежит Samsung).
Более ранние документы в базе данных Geekbench указывали, что Samsung Galaxy Tab S4 получит однокристальную систему Snapdragon 835, дисплей с диагональю 10,5 дюйма,  разрешение - 2560х1600 пикселей, ОЗУ - 4Гб.
Также стало известно, что планшет получит камеры с разрешением 13 и 8 Мп, а ёмкость аккумулятора составит 7300 мА•ч. В качестве операционной системы выступает Android Oreo 8.0 или 8.1. 
Анонс устройства предполагается в конце, накануне открытия берлинской выставки IFA 2018.

Samsung Galaxy Tab S4 (2018) Hits The FCC Ahead Of Launch

Following sightings in a browser test and benchmarks, Samsung’s upcoming Galaxy Tab S4 has now been certified by the Federal Communications Commission. Filed under the model number SM-T835 and FCC ID A3LSMT835, the listing also reveals that the tablet in question is GSM, WCDMA, and LTE-ready. That doesn’t necessarily mean that it will have those functions in the U.S., as noted in the FCC filing. However, the newly spotted certification does indicate that the tablet will be sold for use within the country. There don’t appear to be any images or even any FCC label diagrams associated with the filing, as of this writing. In the meantime, although there isn’t much more than can be gleaned from the FCC listing, this isn’t the first time Samsung’s as-yet-unannounced Galaxy Tab S4 has been spotted.
The current expectation is that this will follow its predecessors as a top-tier Android tablet running the latest version of the OS – Android 8.1 Oreo – although Android 8.0 could also be used instead. That will, of course, be overlaid by Samsung’s own Samsung Experience custom U.I. and loaded up with its proprietary app store and apps alongside Google’s. On the specs front, that’s predicted to be driven by an octa-core Snapdragon 835 SoC backed up by 4GB of RAM based on speculative benchmarks. Those have also shown that the tablet will be a 10.5-inch device with a QHD screen which will almost certainly be comprised of an in-house display panel. There’s no word on what the aspect ratio of that will be but it won’t likely follow the extra tall trend seen in smartphones due to the larger size. Meanwhile, the Galaxy Tab S4 is expected to house that display in a metal frame with an 8-megapixel selfie shooter embedded above. Turning to the back of the device, a 12-megapixel primary camera is expected.

Samsung Galaxy Tab S4 name confirmed following Bluetooth certification

First spotted by Sammobile, a benchmark-spec listing surfaced for a device called the Samsung SM-T835 — which is most likely the Galaxy Tab S4. The latest report from the site confirms a Galaxy Tab S4 is in the works after the company received a Bluetooth certification. Under product name, the document specifically names the Samsung Galaxy Tab S4 as the device that received the certification. Samsung earlier received certification from the Wi-Fi Alliance at the beginning of May.
Underneath the hood, the device is powered by the Snapdragon 835 chipset — which is currently the flagship chip. It’s also an upgrade from the Snapdragon 820 included in its predecessor. While it’s listed as having 3.1GB of RAM, it’s likely that it will actually be 4GB once the device is released. The currently rumored 52GB of storage will most likely be 64GB. As for the camera, it will come with a 7-megapixel front-facing camera and a 12-megapixel rear camera.
As for its operating system, the tablet will reportedly run Android 8.0 Oreo — Android’s latest OS. But the potential release of the tablet comes only one month before the official release Google’s Android P operating system in August.
In terms of additional specs, there’s still no word on what we can expect when it comes to weight, battery, or size of the tablet.
Currently, there aren’t many details on the exact look of the Galaxy Tab S4. It reportedly will have a 10.5-inch display, which is larger than the 9.7-inch screen on the Galaxy Tab S3. Its predecessor also included a Super AMOLED screen, but it’s unclear whether the new device will have the same feature.
But we do have some insight on the display, which is claimed to boast a 2560 x 1600-pixel resolution. In comparison, the Tab S3 screen offers 2,048 x 1,536-pixel resolution.
The Samsung Galaxy S4 tablet is expected to launch in July of this year. But it’s possible it could also launch as early as next month, especially after having already received its Wi-Fi Alliance and Bluetooth certifications.
There isn’t a price yet listed for the Galaxy S4 tablet. The Galaxy Tab S3 was listed at $600 at launch, so we expect the S4 will most likely be priced within the same range.

На днях слухи подтвердились, поскольку в базе данных GFXBench был замечен девайс, маркированный как SM-T825. Практически нет сомнений, что это тот самый Galaxy S4, анонс которого, предположительно, состоится 25 февраля в рамках предстоящей выставки MWC 2018 в Барселоне.
Из документации следует, что Samsung Galaxy Tab S4 получит 10,5-дюймовый Super AMOLED-экран с разрешением 2560x1600 пикселей (QHD+), 8-ядерный процессор Snapdragon 835 с тактовой частотой 2,45 ГГц и графическим ускорителем Adreno 530, 4Гб ОЗУ и 64Гб постоянной флэш-памяти, 12Мп основную и 7Мп фронтальную камеры, а также слот для установки SIM-карты, дополнительной карты памяти, модули Wi-Fi 802.11ac и Bluetooth 5.0 LE.
Операционной системой новинки значится Android 8.0 Oreo, поэтому прямо «из коробки» владельцы нового флагмана Samsung получат доступ к новейшей операционке.

Samsung Galaxy Tab S4 Benchmarked With Android 8.0, Snap Dragon 835

S4 family leaked online earlier this week, having been spotted in the database of Android benchmarking tool GFXBench. The specs mentioned in the listing that can be seen below suggest the successors to the Galaxy Tab S3 series will debut improvements across the board, with the newly benchmarked model seemingly being the larger member of the lineup, featuring a 10.5-inch screen with a QHD resolution of 2,560 by 1,600 pixels amounting to an aspect ratio of 8:5 that isn’t as elongated as the 16:9 image format.
The SM-T835 was listed as boasting the Adreno 540 GPU and a Qualcomm-made octa-core chip clocked at up to 2.3GHz, with those characteristics being indicative of the Snapdragon 835, the same silicon that powered the U.S. variants of the Galaxy S8 lineup and the Galaxy Note 8. Given how last year’s Galaxy Tab S3 family launched with a flagship SoC from 2016, the presence of the 2017 Snapdragon 835 inside the Galaxy Tab S4 is in line with that product strategy. The tablet was certified as having 3.1GB of RAM which in reality likely amounts to 4GB, whereas the difference between the two figures is the amount of memory reserved for the operating system. 64GB of internal flash storage is also part of the package, presumably expandable via a microSD card. The model discovered in GFXBench’s database has cellular capabilities and a single SIM tray. Its primary camera is of the 12-megapixel variety and has a flash unit, whereas the front-facing module utilizes an 8-megapixel sensor, the benchmark suggests. The device was tested while running Android 8.0 Oreo, likely enhanced with Samsung’s own software.
With the Galaxy Tab S3 family launching at Mobile World Congress 2017, it’s likely that the tablets meant to succeed it will be introduced at this year’s iteration of the Barcelona, Spain-based trade show. Samsung is hosting a new “Unpacked” product event on February 25, a day before MWC 2018 opens its doors to the public, though it’s presently unclear whether the happening will be solely dedicated to the Galaxy S9 lineup or if the company will also use it as an opportunity to introduce its new high-end tablets.
