A Clear View of Home from Anywhere with SmartThings Cam

Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. today announced its new SmartThings Cam, designed to help families keep an eye on what matters most at home. SmartThings Cam is a smarter way to monitor a home with premium monitoring features at an approachable price. Cam combines crisp, clear detail in Full HD, High Dynamic Range (HDR) wide-angle video with advanced object detection that intelligently senses motion at a moment’s notice.
With SmartThings Cam, families can easily see home from anywhere using the SmartThings app and receive notifications that intuitively distinguish between people and the motion of pets or a passing car. Activity zones can be set to pay closer attention to a specific area, such as notifying parents of movement in a nursery or when a pet jumps on furniture when no one is home.
While many indoor cameras are limited to a 130-degree view, the SmartThings Cam can see more in a home during the day or night using a Full HD (1080p) 145-degree, wide-angle camera with night vision. Samsung spilled SmartThings app source code and secret keys

A development lab used by Samsung engineers was leaking highly sensitive source code, credentials and secret keys for several internal projects — including its SmartThings  platform, a security researcher found.
The electronics giant left dozens of internal coding projects on a GitLab instance hosted on a Samsung-owned domain, Vandev Lab. The instance, used by staff to share and contribute code to various Samsung apps, services and projects, was spilling data because the projects were set to “public” and not properly protected with a password, allowing anyone to look inside at each project, access and download the source code.
Mossab Hussein, a security researcher at Dubai-based cybersecurity firm SpiderSilk who discovered the exposed files, said one project contained credentials that allowed access to the entire AWS account that was being used, including more than 100 S3 storage buckets that contained logs and analytics data.
Many of the folders, he said, contained logs and analytics data for Samsung’s SmartThings and Bixby services, but also several employees’ exposed private GitLab tokens stored in plaintext, which allowed him to gain additional access from 42 public projects to 135 projects, including many private projects.
Samsung told him some of the files were for testing but Hussein challenged the claim, saying source code found in the GitLab repository contained the same code as the Android  app, published in Google Play on April 10.
The app, which has since been updated, has more than 100 million installs to date.
“I had the private token of a user who had full access to all 135 projects on that GitLab,” he said, which could have allowed him to make code changes using a staffer’s own account.
Hussein shared several screenshots and a video of his findings for TechCrunch to examine and verify.
The exposed GitLab instance also contained private certificates for Samsung’s SmartThings’ iOS and Android apps.
Hussein also found several internal documents and slideshows among the exposed files.
“The real threat lies in the possibility of someone acquiring this level of access to the application source code, and injecting it with malicious code without the company knowing,” he said.
Through exposed private keys and tokens, Hussein documented a vast amount of access that if obtained by a malicious actor could have been “disastrous,” he said.
Hussein, a white-hat hacker and data breach discoverer, reported the findings to Samsung on April 10. In the days following, Samsung began revoking the AWS credentials, but it’s not known if the remaining secret keys and certificates were revoked.
Samsung still hasn’t closed the case on Hussein’s vulnerability report, close to a month after he first disclosed the issue.
“Recently, an individual security researcher reported a vulnerability through our security rewards program regarding one of our testing platforms,” Samsung spokesperson Zach Dugan told TechCrunch when reached prior to publication. “We quickly revoked all keys and certificates for the reported testing platform and while we have yet to find evidence that any external access occurred, we are currently investigating this further.”
Hussein said Samsung took until April 30 to revoke the GitLab private keys. Samsung also declined to answer specific questions we had and provided no evidence that the Samsung-owned development environment was for testing.
Hussein is no stranger to reporting security vulnerabilities. He recently disclosed a vulnerable back-end database at Blind, an anonymous social networking site popular among Silicon Valley employees — and found a server leaking a rolling list of user passwords for scientific journal giant Elsevier.
Samsung’s data leak, he said, was his biggest find to date.
“I haven’t seen a company this big handle their infrastructure using weird practices like that,” he said.
Ilia Kolochenko, founder of web security vendor ImmuniWeb, says that many large enterprises unwittingly leak source code through not only public code repositories but also social networks, Pastebin and other communities on the web. "Often, the source code contains hardcoded credentials and API keys," Kolochenko says, "let alone intellectual property owned by the organizations." He blames the outsourcing of software development to third parties for exacerbating the problem. "Remote developers may recklessly share, send and store your source code without any protection or care," Kolochenko warns, "cybercriminals glean leaked data from public websites, frequently securing a windfall."

A full spectrum of core Samsung Electronics technologies ranging from components to end-products and HARMAN’s know-how on automotive electronics, were fully mobilized in the Digital Cockpit 2019.
“Samsung Electronics and HARMAN have accumulated cross-field technologies and experiences that led to a variety of connected services,” said Wonhee Jo, hardware circuit designer.
For a car audio system, built in the Digital Cockpit 2019, Samsung and HARMAN worked closely together throughout the process from initial design to tuning. “Entertainment experiences can vary by the location of speakers. So, adding woofers under each seat and surround sound speakers in the back seat produces an immersive effect,” said JH Youn, digital circuit designer. “Engineers at HARMAN traveled back and forth between Korea and the United states and carefully conducted the tuning until the last moment to build the best sound quality.”

Optimization of a Car Platform: Enabling All Necessary Technologies to Drive on the Road

A driving experience involves a series of activities from starting the car and arriving to your destination. All of these procedures are operated under one platform: the car itself. The Digital Cockpit 2019 is carefully designed to enable a convenient in-vehicle experience with forefront technologies from various fields that have been optimized to match with a driving experience.
Observing passengers’ behavior is another key task of the Digital Cockpit Lab. People have different patterns on using their cars based on their lifestyles. Some people drive alone, or they drive with their family and children. Or some might need to read documents while they are on the road, to keep up with their work.
For example, the feature that allows drivers to adjust the temperature from the back seats was inspired by parents that look over to see their sleeping child from the driver’s seat. The feature that seamlessly presents documents from your smartphone on larger screens in the car via ‘Samsung DeX’ was an idea that came from another observation.
“My ideas came from paying close attention to other people when I was traveling with a friend or driving with other people,” said Wooseok Hwang, user experience designer.

Many visitors at CES 2019 that was held last January were captivated by the new automotive experience of the Digital Cockpit 2019. Several visitors approached the team who were at the site asking, “Where can I get this car?”
“The Digital Cockpit is not the concept of a finished car. It is more about technologies that enables the car,” said Wonhee Jo, hardware circuit designer. “The purpose of the Digital Cockpit is to unleash the potential to the world that Samsung has in the automotive electronics industry”.
The ultimate goal of the Digital Cockpit Lab is to reach out to people with future technologies. During the development process, the team took into consideration what drivers and passengers can experience when they are inside the car. “Our job is done when people have an enjoyable and pleasant automotive experience through the Digital Cockpit,” said the team.
“There is no set direction. As industries evolve, perspectives on cars tend to change as well. Our work is to take one step ahead of such trends and stay committed to integrate both Samsung and HARMAN’s infrastructure and technologies to keep the engine running to lead the ever-changing industry.”

How Samsung’s Digital Cockpit Lab Brought the Car of the Future into Reality

Samsung Electronics unveiled its first Digital Cockpit at CES 2018, co-developed with HARMAN. A year later, the company revealed the Digital Cockpit 2019, a revamped version of the platform incorporating insight from research and consumer feedback. While the Digital Cockpit 2019 presents an enriched automotive experience with improved personalization, connectivity and safety using a suite of IoT solutions, it poses the fundamental question – what do you want to do in your car?
Samsung Newsroom sat down with the Digital Cockpit Lab from Samsung’s Automotive Electronics Business Team to learn how they brought the car of the future into a reality.

The Digital Cockpit Connects Our Lives

The cockpit is the dashboard of the car in front of the driver and the passenger seat. A ‘Digital Cockpit’ is a platform that comes with the latest digital technology which takes the overall in-vehicle system to the next level. With Samsung’s latest Digital Cockpit 2019, the new platform provides full vehicle control for drivers and a variety of tailored content to the passengers as well.
In today’s world, the car is more than just a mode of transportation — it is a space that connects different parts of our lives together. Surprisingly, you will be able to use all of these features in the near future.
At home, you start the car and adjust the temperature in your car from your living room via Galaxy Home.
Once everyone gets in, your car starts to play tailored content for each passenger with face recognition technology.
The car also informs you of possible danger by scanning moving objects and tries to prevent dangerous situations from happening like when the driver dozes off while driving.
On the move, you can even check what’s inside your home refrigerator via the car system, in order to prepare for the evening’s dinner.
“If your destination is a soccer field, the car transforms itself into the soccer field by playing soccer game content while you are on the go,” said JH Yun, digital circuit designer from the Samsung Digital Cockpit Lab. “The volume of content that you can enjoy in your car will expand naturally. What we need to do is to create an optimal environment for you to enjoy that content in your car.”
A feature called ‘Home to Car’ is an example of the leading-edge innovation featured in the Digital Cockpit. The function allows customers to control their cars at home through the SmartThings app. “One of the biggest advantages the connected vehicle offers is that there are no spatial constraints,” said Junhong Kim, software developer. “You can start the car, check the gas level and more, regardless of your distance from the vehicle. We are ready for the next generation of mobility.”
When your hands are on the wheel to control your driving safely, a voice command can be the best alternative when you are interacting with your car. Bixby, Samsung’s AI platform, has been integrated into the Digital Cockpit undergoing a transformation in order to fit into the vehicle environment.
“We conducted voice command tuning and adjusted it to the vehicle environment by enhancing the icon and font size so that a driver can see them well while they are driving,” said Jonghee Choi, user interface developer. “And an increased interoperability with third-party services offers a wide range of information like weather forecast and flight schedule from your seat.”

No Matter Where You Sit, the Car Provides You with the Best Experience

While the previous Digital Cockpit had three displays, the 2019 version has a total of six displays delivering tailored infotainment to all passengers. For instance, passengers in the back seat will also be able to enjoy tailored content from their own screens.
“All of the displays will enable you to enjoy high resolution videos in your car without hassle,” said Wonhee Jo, hardware circuit designer. “Not only that, the back-seat screens can be folded conveniently into the seats when they are not in use.”
The screens can also recognize your face wherever you sit and suggest content based on the preferences of pre-registered passengers in which they can activate or deactivate the feature.
“It’s amazing because you can enjoy your in-vehicle experience seamlessly even if you sit in a different seat,” said Seungwoo Shin, user experience designer. “Each passenger can enjoy different content, or they can just sync all of the screens to enjoy the same content, as if they were watching it from the living room of their homes.”
“The experience of each passenger can be managed for each seat,” said Daesoo Choi, human interface developer. “The passengers can make detailed adjustments such as the height, angle and temperature of each seat or the screen’s brightness.”
When a vehicle is equipped with various sophisticated technologies, the challenges increase. One of the challenges had to do with the number of buttons. Not only were the least used buttons taking up space, they were also ineffective. So, the team solved the problem with a knob. “We got a hint from a knob on the Samsung Galaxy Watch when we were thinking about ways to fuse analog nostalgia with the digital world. And we solved the problem with a single knob that can serve as the functions of various buttons,” said JH Yun, digital circuit designer. “This year’s Digital Cockpit will also have knobs in the back seat that can be activated according to the user’s preference.”

Nine Cameras Cover Every Direction, Ensuring Safety on the Road

A car must assure the safety of its driver and passengers. In order to support safe driving, the Digital Cockpit 2019 is equipped with a total of nine cameras.
The Digital Cockpit features a ‘Mirror Replacement Vision System (MRVS)’ that replaces side-view mirrors in conventional cars. The system consists of two displays on both sides and it helps safer driving by detecting moving objects in the rear when the driver checks behind them. By utilizing the camera technology, Digital Cockpit 2019 ensures safer driving with a wider viewing angle.
The Digital Cockpit also monitors the driver’s condition through a system that tracks the driver’s pupils to detect drowsy eyes or careless driving. “The Driver Monitoring System is an essential technology for autonomous driving in the near future,” said Seungwon Oh, camera system developer.
Drivers can sometimes miss the system alert while they are looking ahead when they are on the road. To prevent this from happening, the Digital Cockpit 2019 provides additional alerts. “We’ve added a vibration alert by using the Samsung Galaxy Watch on your wrist,” said Oh.

New Bixby on Samsung 2019 Smart TVs also covers a wider range and can hear voices from a greater distance, so you no longer need to press the speaker button on your remote control to talk to the intelligent assistant.

3. Seamless Connectivity Throughout the Home

2019 Smart TVs can act as a hub for the home, allowing you to control devices around the home with the SmartThings dashboard. SmartThings seamlessly connects and controls devices around the home, creating a comprehensive IoT ecosystem. Users can create automations that control devices or run scenes whenever certain conditions – such as the time of day, device status or the locations of family members – are met. For example, an air conditioner might turn itself off when open windows are detected, or a smartphone might switch on the lights at home when its GPS indicates that it is close by.

Поддержка интеллектуального голосового помощника Bixby позволяет более эффективно управлять холодильником Family Hub, при этом будут учитываться индивидуальные предпочтения пользователя. Например, во время приготовления завтрака можно попросить Bixby показать прогноз погоды и основные новости с помощью функции «Утренняя сводка» (Morning Brief). Вся эта информация отображается на экране Family Hub, и пользователи могут не только прослушать, но и увидеть всё необходимое. А благодаря технологии идентификации голоса, Bixby может распознать каждого члена семьи – таким образом, они получат информацию, подобранную с учётом их индивидуальных потребностей. Но этим возможности Bixby не ограничиваются: на самом деле он ещё умнее и готов к общению – владельцы холодильника могут взаимодействовать с ним как с обычным человеком. Теперь вы можете искать билеты на самолёт, заказывать такси или устанавливать температуру духовки, просто отдав Family Hub голосовую команду.
Однако и это ещё не всё: благодаря тесной интеграции Family Hub в экосистему SmartThings, теперь можно взаимодействовать и управлять устройствами «умного» дома от Samsung и сторонних производителей – непосредственно с экрана холодильника или с помощью голоса через Bixby.

Семейные связи

Новый экран Family Board служит своеобразной цифровой доской, на которой каждый член семьи может с лёгкостью размещать заметки, записки, фотографии или даже рисунки – прямо на экране. В распоряжении владельцев таких девайсов теперь появилось специальное пространство, где они могут размещать фотографии, сообщения и напоминания. Более того, они могут применять к фотографиям различные эффекты и стили, добавлять рукописные надписи и стикеры и даже менять фон экрана, чтобы он соответствовал интерьеру – всё это сближает семью и позволяет поднять общение на новый уровень.
В холодильниках Family Hub предусмотрена возможность запуска динамической экранной заставки, которую можно использовать, чтобы отобразить важные семейные воспоминания или необходимую информацию, например, прогноз погоды, и даже вывести на экран любимое произведение искусства. Такие возможности позволяют гармонично интегрировать холодильник в интерьер кухни.

Удобный процесс управления запасами продуктов и приготовления пищи

С самого начала одна из основных идей Family Hub заключалась в том, чтобы помочь их владельцам управлять запасами продуктов и вывести этот процесс на новый уровень – как за счёт функции View Inside, позволяющей увидеть содержимое холодильника прямо в магазине на экране смартфона, так и за счёт возможности составлять списки покупок и помечать сроки годности продуктов. Family Hub позволяет планировать более качественный и здоровый рацион благодаря функции Meal Planner, которая подбирает рецепты блюд, исходя из гастрономических предпочтений пользователей, предписанной диеты и доступных продуктов, находящихся в холодильнике.

Family Hub continues to set a new standard for connected living, bringing the family together in the kitchen while freeing users up to focus on what’s important to them.
As the new generation of homeowners look to technology to define both who they are and how they want to live their lives, there is no better place to do this than in a connected kitchen. And with the Family Hub, which offers the simplified connectivity they’ve grown accustomed to, families can spend more time focusing on the things that matter most to them.
In 2019, with the new Family Board, a communal screen that family members can interact with ina personalized way, Family Hub helps foster true family connection, food management, and a connected home experience in today’s fast-paced modern world.

Intelligence

Bixby allows for a smarter, hands-free, more personalized way to use the Family Hub. Users can ask Bixby for their Morning Brief while getting breakfast ready for the kids so they know all of their daily essentials like the weather and top news. All of this appears on the Family Hub screen so they can see as well as hear it. And through Bixby’s voice ID technology, each family member’s voice is distinguished, so everyone can get tailored information for their individual needs. Bixby is even smarter and more conversational – allowing users to interact more naturally. Imagine, now users can search for a plane ticket through Expedia, call an Uber and pre-set the oven temperature just by talking to the Family Hub.
Taking intelligence a step further, with the Family Hub’s seamless integration of SmartThings, owners can now see and control hundreds of Samsung and third partysmart home devices right from the refrigerator screen and by voice with Bixby.

Family Connections  

The new Family Board screen acts as a digital bulletin board in which members can easily stick notes and photos and even doodle right on the screen. Users can now have a devoted screen to share photos, messages andmemories on their fridge, and are able to customize their photos with different photo styles, add handwritten notes and stickers, and even change the background color to match their kitchen – all bringing the family closer to elevate the way they connect and share.
The Family Hub displays a dynamic screensaverthat can be used to display precious family moments, important information such as the weather, or even artwork. It can also be set to blend with the décor in the kitchen.

Healthier Food Management 

From the beginning, food management with Family Hub has been a cornerstone feature elevating the way homeowners manage their food – whether using “View Inside” to see if they need eggs from their smartphone while at the store or adding items to their shopping list and tagging expiration dates. The Family Hub enables a user to create better and healthier meals with Meal Planner, which customizes recipes based on food preferences, dietary needs and the items in the fridge.
In 2019, Samsung will expand the Family Hub platform across more models to ensure that there is a Family Hub configuration that meets the needs of all consumers.
