Saves the Day: Galaxy S10 Features in the Marine Rescue of a Stranded Australian Couple

The Galaxy S10 is a smartphone designed for ultimate performance, and a recent incident that took place off the coast of Queensland, Australia – fortunately, one with a happy ending – saw some of its leading functionalities put to use under extraordinary circumstances.

Harnessing the Galaxy S10 to Get to Safety

In June of this year, Australian couple Jessica and Lindsay were enjoying a trip out on their family boat 38km off the coast of Cairns, Queensland, an area most famous for its iconic Great Barrier Reef, when their boat’s motor became entangled with the anchor rope and led to them getting swept up by the waves. With the boat then overturning, the stranded couple were tipped into the water with no time to retrieve their lifejackets or their Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacon (EPIRB), a device used to alert rescue services in emergencies.
The couple managed to remain afloat by grabbing hold of the anchor float after the boat overturned – but their ordeal was far from over as they had concerns about what marine wildlife might be nearby given that they had caught a six-foot shark right before capsizing. While floating overturned and in the water, the stern (rear) of the boat was weighed down as the anchor line was wrapped around the motor while it faced the sea swell.
However, Jessica was able to use her Galaxy S10 to contact the emergency services via phone and text after capsizing.
After having spoken with the local Chief of Police, she shared screenshots of their location with the rescue team using the Galaxy S10’s GPS and Google Maps functions. This information then helped guide the helicopter and boat emergency teams dispatched to find them.
Able to maintain contact with the authorities as they patrolled the ocean to find them, Jessica was also able to draw the attention of the rescue boat upon its arrival thanks to her Galaxy S10’s flashlight – the couple had spent several hours in the water and night had since fallen.
Jessica and Lindsay’s experience is a sobering reminder about the importance of water safety and conduct, and furthermore, it is also a unique example of the power and endurance of Galaxy smartphones, even in unusual or difficult situations; Jessica’s Galaxy S10 is still functioning as normal.*

В Южной Корее компания Naver Labs представила детские смарт-часы AKI на проприетарной операционной платформе с использованием процессора Samsung Exynos 7270. Это двухъядерный чипсет с частотой 1 ГГц, который применяется в топовых смарт-часах Samsung Gear S3, работающих на TIZEN OS.

Однако назвать AKI полноценными смарт-часами нельзя, поскольку их функционал сильно ограничен и ориентирован на внешний родительский контроль.

Например, они получили приличный AMOLED-дисплей с диагональю 1,2 дюйма, модуль GPS, LTE-модем и систему позиционирования WPS, использующей сети Wi-Fi.
Более того, в AKI имеется голосовой ассистент и даже детская платёжная система Cash Bee. Всё это настраивается и контролируется родителями с персональных смартфонов. Также можно отметить защиту от воды и наличие беспроводной зарядки. Часы доступны в розовом, синем и ярко-голубом цветах.
На южнокорейском рынке гаджет оценивается  275 долларов, но прайс также включает в себя оплату мобильной связи в течение 2-х лет. Появятся ли AKI на международном рынке, пока неизвестно. 

Bringing Families Together: Naver Labs’ AKI with the Samsung Exynos 7 Dual

Fashion and technology have found a happy marriage with the advent of wearable devices. Wearables have enabled us to track our health, work more efficiently, and enjoy entertainment in new ways. Now Naver Labs, an ambient intelligence company in Korea, is finding a way to bring the wearable experience to an all new audience: kids and families.
Naver Labs’ AKI is a family-friendly wearable watch designed to help bring families together and give parents peace of mind about their children’s safety. Inside the device is the Samsung Exynos 7 Dual (7270), a dedicated processor designed specifically for wearables. From its dual-core CPU, to its integrated LTE modem, the processor built on 14nm FinFET process packs power into a tiny package that is changing the way families interact.

Giving Parents Peace of Mind

Keeping an eye on your little ones can be difficult at times, but the AKI is making the job a lot easier. The device provides parents with information on where their children are at any time and can send alerts when their kids are somewhere they shouldn’t be or are doing something they shouldn’t be doing.
The device uses Naver Labs’ own W-Fi Positioning System (WPS), which provides the exact location of the device, even indoors. The watch can also detect activity and classify movement and can see exactly what the child is doing. Over time, it learns the child’s daily routine by analyzing the typical places they visit and at what time. If there are any abnormalities in their routine, parents will receive an alert to their phone.
Enabling these features is the Exynos 7270’s integrated Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) solution for location-based services. The chip also features Wi-Fi with Bluetooth connectivity that enables the watch to tether to another device, or to give Wi-Fi-based location services more accuracy. The low power consumption, thanks to the 14nm FinFET processor, also means the device can stay on for long periods of time so that parents can always check in on their little ones without worrying about battery depletion.

Keeping Families Connected and Secure

Keeping track of your kids is one thing, but with the AKI you can also check in with a quick call. The device comes equipped with a speaker phone and Voice over Long-Term Evolution (VoLTE) for enhanced call quality. Behind this is the Exynos 7270’s Cat. 4 LTE modem that enables the device to stay connected at all times.
Thanks to the Exynos processor, your child’s data remains safe through ARM TrustZone hardware-based security, which separates non-secure and secure software from accessing the same resources directly. This ensures the AKI encrypts all of its data and only parents can access their child’s information.

Designed With Kids in Mind

With a kid-centric design, the AKI puts durability, function, and fun first. Kids can choose from multiple, bright-colored straps and one of four adorable dog emojis to adorn its 1.2inch AMOLED touch screen. Powering the graphics on display is the Mali-T720 graphics processing unit (GPU) of the Exynos 7270, so the entertaining dog emoji’s really come to life.
With a silicon strap for a comfortable fit and a refined metal frame, the colors and materials are beautifully matched resulting in cute, yet highly exclusive design. Furthermore, the AKI has a water-resistant rating of IP68, so kids don’t need to take off the watch even in swimming pools. The device is also tested for skin stimulation, high-temperature and humidity for safety and reliability.
Thanks to the Exynos 7270’s SiP-ePoP package, which includes the processor memory, and power management IC in a 10x10mm package, the AKI is able to keep a distinctive, flexible and slim design that is both functional and comfortable.

Helping Children Learn

More than just a tracking device, Naver Labs has also seized learning opportunities made possible by its intelligent software with the Exynos processor inside of the AKI. Capable of processing speeds up to 1.0GHz, the Exynos 7270 enables the AKI to offer advanced features that kids can interact with through voice command. The CLOVA, for example, is an intelligent personal assistant service, and the Papago, a multilingual machine translation cloud service helps kids study second languages. With intelligent software, the AKI is even capable of translating speech in English, Korean, Chinese, and Japanese.
The AKI can also help parents keep their kids on track. Using the app on their phone, parents can manage the settings on their child’s device, such as enabling concentration mode while their child is in school to minimize distractions from the watch and help their kids focus on studying without interruption.

Смарт-гаджет на TIZEN OS для любителей фитнеса и различных видов спорта Samsung Gear Fit 2 поступил в продажу ровно год назад. Вероятно в честь годовщины его пребывания на глобальном рынке южнокорейский техногигант решил основательно обновить программную прошивку девайса, расширив функции, а также улучшив качество мониторинга физического состояния его владельцев. 
Одной из наиболее заметных опций стала возможность отслеживания местоположения человека после 10 минут с начала тренировки. Разумеется, это понравится любителям пробежек. В то же время на дисплее будут отображаться физические показатели тренирующегося.
Ещё одно новшество позволит задавать не только параметры интенсивности тренировок, но и мониторинг отдельных показателей, которые стремится улучшить спортсмен. Например, теперь можно фиксировать время пробежки и её среднюю скорость.
Изменения коснулись и графического интерфейса: отныне пользователь сам может выбрать, какие параметры нужно выводить на экран в обязательном порядке, а какие нет.
После 50 минут отсутствия физической активности гаджет напомнит вам о необходимости проведения упражнений и предоставит пошаговое руководство для желающих размяться.
Улучшены и параметры мониторинга сна: теперь на дисплее будет отображаться более полная статистика. График строится с учётом определения состояния сна: крепкий, лёгкий и беспокойный.
Кроме того, появилась возможность активировать функцию экстренного вызова (SOS) непосредственно с фитнес-часов.
Обновление можно загрузить уже сейчас, используя приложение Samsung Gear на совместимом смартфоне.
Напомним, что синхронизировать Samsung Gear Fit 2 можно почти с любым мобильным телефоном на iOS или Android последних поколений.

Gear Fit2 Software Update Adds More Ways to Maximize Training

Samsung’s Gear Fit2 allows users to ‘sweat smarter’ by accurately tracking a wide range of exercises and providing insights to help you take charge of your fitness. The GPS sports band’s latest software update strengthens its heart-rate and exercise-tracking abilities and adds new ways for users to maximize their training.
The Gear Fit2’s update makes tracking fitness progress more intuitive and effective. Once a user completes an exercise with their Gear Fit2, for instance, listed among their post-workout stats will be a color-coded graph displaying time spent in various heart-rate zones. Broken down by level of exertion – ‘Moderate’, ‘Vigorous’ and ‘Maximum’ – the chart takes the user’s maximum heart rate into account to provide a simple rundown of the exercise’s efficiency.
Automatic activity detection has also been enhanced. Whenever a user exercises for more than ten minutes, the Gear Fit2 automatically activates its fitness-tracking functions. With the new update, the map displayed after a user completes an auto-tracked workout will also inform them of their approximate location.
To help users get in the zone during runs, the update also incorporates support for customizable pace targets. Simply input your desired distance and time via the Samsung Health smartphone app to build a workout tailored help you reach your running goals. Users may choose between runs designed to help burn fat or increase cardiovascular endurance, and select an intensity level that works for them. After establishing a target, the device will guide users through each stage of their exercise.
The update also lets users customize the information that’s displayed during workouts. The device offers a clear view of an array of useful workout data, including distance traveled, calories burned, the duration of an exercise, and the user’s heart rate. To adjust the data that’s prominently displayed, simply swipe across the Gear Fit2’s screen. A simple tap on the bottom of the screen will be displayed there additionally.
For users who need a little nudge now and then to get on their feet, 50 minutes of inactivity will prompt the Gear Fit2’s enhanced inactive alerts screen, which provides walkthroughs of simple stretches that can help you get back on track.
Of course, getting the most out of a workout requires getting a good night’s rest afterward, which is why the comprehensive Sleep Record notification offers users deeper insight into their personal sleep patterns.
Included with the evening’s sleep total is a simple multicolored graph that breaks down ‘Restless’, ‘Light’ and ‘Motionless’ sleep and informs you of how much time you spent in each zone. Users have the option to view their sleep data directly on their device, or via the Samsung Health app on their smartphone.
Other notable additions include the ability to send quick SOS alerts with your location by triple pressing the Gear Fit2’s Home key, and browse and download watch faces directly to the device, as well as via the Samsung Gear app.

Как уже неоднократно упоминалось в нашем блоге, Samsung представит новый смартфон на базе операционной системы TIZEN 3.0 в мае. Так оно и произошло.
Сегодня опубликован офицальный пресс-релиз, где указаны основные спецификации гаджета, а также фотогалерея.
Вопреки ожиданиям многих экспертов, некоторые характеристики аппарата оказались более скромными, чем у его предшественника Samsung Z3. Экономия коснулась дисплея (заявлен IPS вместо прогнозируемого Super AMOLED), а также его размера. Кроме того, объём оперативной и постоянной памяти сохранён на уровне предшественников Samsung Z1 и Samsung Z3. Впрочем, когда речь идёт о смартфонах, работающих на базе TIZEN OS, нужно учитывать, что они расходуют примерно вдвое меньше ресурсов ОЗУ, чем их Android-конкуренты. Таким образом, если рассматривать эквиваленты на базе операционки от Google, то им для достижения аналогичной производительности потребовалось бы не менее 2Гб ОЗУ. Что же касается объёма памяти, то наличие слота для карт MicroSD во многом компенсирует её недостаток на борту самого аппарата.
За счёт экономии на вышеуказанных позициях, Samsung Z4 отыгрывает очки у своих предшественников в производительности и возможностях фото/видеосъёмки. Впервые в истории линейка смартфонов Samsung пополнилась мобильным устройством, оснащённым светодиодными вспышками с двух сторон. При этом основная камера получила двойную вспышку для получения лучших результатов во время съёмки при недостаточной освещённости или ночью. Любители сэлфи также будут рады заполучить полноценную 5-мегапиксельную камеру, оснащённую вспышкой.
Samsung Z4 выйдет, как минимум, в двух модификациях - "односимочной" и с Dual SIM. Но в обеих моделях будет присутствовать слот для дополнительных карт памяти (их ёмкость может составлять до 128Гб). Предусмотрена поддержка высокоскоростной связи LTE, беспроводных подключений (Wi-Fi, Bluetooth), GPS/Glonass, USB 2.0. Медиавозможности также достаточно широки: аппарат способен работать со всеми основными аудио/видеоформатами, подключаться к внешним хард-дискам для переброски файлов и коннектиться с наушниками через стандартный порт. Ёмкость аккумуляторной батареи составляет 2,050мАч. 
Samsung Z4 будет предлагаться в трёх цветовых вариантах. Цена на устройство пока не объявлена, но, судя по всему, оно будет принадлежать к ультрабюджетному сегменту для успешной конкуренции с китайской продукцией на рынках развивающихся стран.
Самый большой интерес представляет последняя версия операционной системы TIZEN 3.0, которая должна открыть целый ряд новых возможностей для пользователей (например, управление с помощью голосовых команд или жестов, съёмку на две камеры одновременно и т.д.), а также, согласно анонсам, превосходит прежнюю версию 2.4 по быстродействию примерно на 30%.
Как сообщает вендор, официальная презентация Samsung Z4 состоится в рамках ежегодной конференции TIZEN-разработчиков TDC 2017 в Сан-Франциско (США, Калифорния) 16-17 мая.

Productivity and Convenience

Perfect for first-time smartphone users, the Samsung Z4 provides enhanced usability with a wide range of quick features, which offer fast and easy access to frequently used functions. Using different combinations of physical buttons or swiping the screen, users can create shortcuts to launch convenient features including Quick Talk, Quick Torch, Quick Launch of camera or Quick Switch without returning to the home screen. For example, Quick Talk will launch a set of shortcuts localized by region, such as Alarm, Call, or Music, simply through voice activated commands.
The Samsung Z4 offers efficient battery management features for extended use, including Battery Notifications and Power Planner. Battery Notifications allows users to set customized notifications so they can be alerted when the remaining battery power falls below a pre-set level. With Power Planner, users can pick from three different levels to manage their long-term battery use. Depending on the level, Power Planner will adjust the device’s configurations to maximize battery life to last for the selected time frame.

Easy Ways to Capture the Perfect Shot

The Samsung Z4 camera lets users capture high-quality photos. Perfect for taking bright, clear selfies, the 5-megapixel front camera includes an F2.2 lens, LED flash and a variety of camera modes. The Samsung Z4 also has a rear 5-megapixel camera with dual LED flash so users can take crisp photos even when the subject is far away.
With the Samsung Z4, users can easily snap photos and videos with palm, auto and voice control. For faster selfies, users can take a photo by showing their palm and saying “cheese” or by waiting for Auto Selfie, which uses facial recognition to take sharp and accurate pictures. Users can also record continuous videos with the Video Flip function, which allows for simple switching between the rear and front cameras to capture multiple views in one single video.

Refined Design
