В отличие от Android-смартфонов, где Samsung использует чужую операционную платформу, носимые смарт-девайсы работают на TIZEN OS, которая фактически принадлежит южнокорейскому техногиганту. Благодаря этому владельцы смарт-часов и фитнес-браслетов Samsung получают обновления гораздо чаще и в течение более длительного периода, чем "гуглофоны".
Сегодня в США флагманские Samsung Gear S3 (2016) и более доступные Gaer sport (2017) получили новые прошивки R760XXU2DSA1/R760OXA2DSA1 и R600XXU1BSA1/R600OXA1BSA1/ соответственно, которые приносят версию TIZEN 4.0.0.2. Запуск в других регионах начнётся в ближайшие дни. 
Теперь популярное фитнес-приложение Samsung Health поддерживает ещё больше видов тренировок на открытом воздухе. Появилась поддержка отображения информации о стадиях сна. Панель быстрого доступа получила улучшенный интерфейс для более удобного взаимодействия. 
В смарт-часах появились 2 новых режима — «театр» и «сон». Их также можно активировать через быстрый доступ. Меню настроек видоизменилось. Панель уведомлений теперь показывает изображения входящих MMS и автоматически воспроизводит анимированные картинки. В мессенджере можно сохранять черновики. Кроме того, поддерживается более 1.000 эмодзи.

TIZEN-powered Samsung Gear S3/Gear S3 Classic and Gear Sport gets a big update with a host of new features

Samsung is treating its customers to a new software update as it has begun rolling out TIZEN 4 to the Samsung Gear S3 Classic, Gear S3 Frontier and Gear Sport smartwatches.
This new update comes with the version number R760XXU2DSA1/R760OXA2DSA1 for the Gear S3 and R600XXU1BSA1/R600OXA1BSA1/ for the Gear Sport, and is ~299MB in size. Notably, the software update bumps up the TIZEN version on these watches to v4.0.0.2.

The official changelog of this update is as follows:

* Samsung Health – Support various indoor workouts and back-to-back workout.
* Samsung Health Widget – Samsung Health Widget now also supports and provides sleep stages information.
* Advanced – Two advanced modes (Theater, Sleep) are added to keep user from disturbance during specific time and place. Modes can be toggled from quick panel.
* Quick Panel – Newly added quick settings. Easier and faster interaction.
* Messages – Draft messages can now be saved. Additionally, showing MMS image on notification cover view and animated messages are automatically played. Replying is now quicker and easier. Over 1,000 emojis supported.
* Music – User can change to different music play source on Watch instead of using a Phone.
* Setting menu – Improved categorizing of menus for better discovery of features and items.

XDA Recognized Contributor linuxct also found a few other interesting changes on the Gear Sport which are not mentioned in the official changelog:

* Screenshots can now be taken by pressing and holding the power button and swiping the screen from left to right.
* New Permissions Management:
* Similar to the permissions management system present in Android 6.0 Marshmallow, when you open an app that requires Storage or Microphone permission, the user is granted a prompt to allow or deny the request, instead of instantly granting it by default.
* Permissions can now be managed from Settings > Apps > Permissions.
* Sliding down the Quick Settings menu is now much smoother.

The update is likely rolling out in a staged manner, so it should reach all devices sooner or later.

TIZEN-часы Samsung Gear S3 получают очередное обновление прошивки

В то время как внимание любителей носимых гаджетов уже переключилось на грядущую модель Samsung Galaxy Watch, южнокорейский техногигант продолжает поддержку своих девайсов прежних поколений.
Накануне появились сообщения, что флагман 2016 года Samsung Gear S3 получил очередное программное обновление, призванное оптимизировать работу системы питания.
После глобального обновления в ноябре 2017 года на следующую версию операционной системы (с TIZEN 2.4 до TIZEN 3.0), принесшей целый ряд новых функций, некоторые пользователи заметили перерасход заряда аккумуляторной батареи. Samsung Gear S3-series get firmware update, fixes the battery overheating issue

Samsung released a minor firmware update for the Gear S3 Classic and Frontier. The TIZEN version is bumped to 3.0.0.2 while the firmware numbers for the Gear S3 Classic and Gear S3 Frontier wearables are R770XXU2CRG3/R760XXU2CRG3, respectively. The size of the package is just 16.3MB.

The firmware doesn't add anything new, but fixes the battery charging and overheating issue so that's why the log says "changed battery charge algorithm". After the TIZEN 3.0 update, some users reported battery ovrheating towards 90% charge so they had to remove the wearable to cool off and then put it back on the pad to charge it to 100%. No need of doing that anymore.
The usual "bug fixes and stability improvements" are at hand too. If you still haven't received the update, you can try searching for it manually from About Gear -> Update Gear software in the Samsung Gear app on your smartphone.

Samsung Marks Portuguese Air Force’s 65th Anniversary with High-flying Innovations

To commemorate the Portuguese Air Force’s (PoAF) 65th anniversary, Samsung Electronics Portugal recently partnered with the military branch on a pair of exciting projects – one offering pilots a precision instrument to help them traverse the skies, the other providing civilians with a chance to experience the thrill of flying for themselves.

The First Smartwatch Trusted by Aviators

The world of aviation has historically inspired exceptional examples of watchmaking. Samsung’s Gear S3 frontier Special Edition, the first smartwatch to be associated with military aeronautics, is the latest product of this innovative history.
The Gear S3’s IP68 dust and water resistance and military-grade durability distinguish the device as capable of adapting to the requirements of military missions. The PoAF’s special edition enhances that utility with an exclusive watch face – one that combines exceptional functionality with aesthetic cues that celebrate the tradition and innovation of the Portuguese Air Force.
The watch face features a design based on specifications provided by pilots across PoAF divisions. The black dial displays the time, date, day of the week and month, and includes a display for UTC/Zulu time, the worldwide reference time zone for pilots, at 9 o’clock.
The numerals are written in the same font that the PoAF has historically used for the tail numbers of its aircraft. In addition, to honor the anniversary, the 6 and 5 are highlighted either in gold or in the colors of the Portuguese flag, and may be customized to suit the user’s preference. At the top of the dial, in place of the 12, are the PoAF’s symbol – a stylized eagle – and the inscription, “Portuguese Air Force”.
Although it was originally designed exclusively for use by PoAF pilots, the watch face is currently available to download via the Gear App Store.*

Taking Flight with the Gear VR

Over the course of several months, Samsung Electronics Portugal, the Portuguese Air Force and Impresa Media Group shot a series of virtual reality films that allow viewers to experience the sheer exhilaration that comes with piloting a state-of-the-art aircraft.
The films were recorded with Samsung Gear 360 cameras and showcased at the PoAF’s 65th anniversary exhibit in Castelo Branco, two hours’ drive from the Portuguese capital, Lisbon. Upon strapping on Samsung’s Gear VR headset, attendees at the event were transported into the cockpits of Alpha-Jet instruction fighters, Aérospatiale Alouette III helicopters and F-16 AM fighter jets.
By creating an experience that’s as close as can be to actually stepping into the cockpit of a supersonic aircraft, the immersive footage allowed attendees to experience the thrill and beauty of flying for themselves.

Get Out and Get Active this Spring with these Functional Gear S3 Watchfaces

Spring is finally upon us, which means it’s time to stop hibernating and start enjoying the warm weather.

Featuring a sturdy, IP68-certified design, GPS capability and advanced fitness features, the Gear S3 was designed to cater to the active and adventurous. Now, with the release of the three highly functional, activity-focused watchfaces outlined below, Samsung has made it even easier for Gear S3 users to streamline travel, training and trekking the great outdoors.
To illustrate their handy functions, Samsung teamed up with a world-famous adventurer, travel photographer and daredevil – three inspiring individuals who embody the spirit of adventure at the heart of the new watchfaces’ designs.

For Outdoor Adventures

The new Samsung Outdoor Watchface presents a selection of Gear S3 functions that can assist users when they’re out enjoying the weather – whether they’re conquering a hike or simply going for a stroll.
The watchface includes an altimeter at three o’clock, a barometer at nine, a date and weather indication at six, and a sunrise/sunset display that arches over the screen. Tapping an indication once will access its app, while double-tapping will allow you to customize various display-related settings. For instance, the watchface allows users to preset altitude and atmospheric figures that, if exceeded, will cause the screen to flash red.
The Outdoor edition also features a dedicated night mode, and, like the other watchfaces on this list, is offered in multiple colors, so users may customize their screen to their liking.
For the Outdoor Watchface’s release, Samsung collaborated with British explorer Bear Grylls on a series of short videos that immerse viewers in his daily adventures and offer tips on how to use the watchface when trekking through the wilderness.

For World Travelers

The Samsung Travel Watchface combines a host of handy Gear S3 functions that can help business travelers and tourists better manage their trips.
The watchface’s customizable dual-time indications allow you to easily monitor the time and temperature back home as well as in your current location, while the currency display at 12 o’clock offers easy access to the exchange rate.
The My Journey indication rounding out the screen at six o’clock allows you to keep track of distance traveled, and, when tapped, will open a detailed map to help you navigate a new city.
To demonstrate the watchface’s ability to support memorable journeys, Samsung collaborated with Russian travel photographer Murad Osmann and his wife Natalia, who created the captivating ‘Follow Me To’ photo series that’s become a social media phenomenon.
Filmed in reverse and featuring the same immersive angles and vivid color that made the photo series so spectacular, the video below follows Murad and Natalia’s journey from Moscow to Havana, Cuba. There, aided by their Gear S3s, they navigate the city’s streets, soak up its vibrant culture and snap shot after spectacular shot.

For Breaking a Sweat

The Samsung Sports Watchface assembles a variety of Gear S3 functions that can help users put their game face on when training or engaging in their favorite sports.
The Sports Watchface features a stopwatch at three o’clock and a speedometer at nine, beneath side-by-side displays for the user’s current heart rate and calories burned. The watchface also provides easy access to My Journey at the bottom of the screen, to help users map out runs and rides.
Moreover, like the Outdoor edition, the Sports Watchface features a built-in alert function, designed to help users keep an eye on their exertion and exercise safely. Should you exceed your preset activity level – a maximum heart rate, for instance – the screen will flash red to signal you to rein it in.
To illustrate the watchface’s competitive edge, Samsung produced a series of adrenaline-pumping videos following stunt biker extraordinaire Robbie Maddison, who uses the Gear S3 to help him train, smash records and break new ground in his sport.

Samsung Releases Comprehensive Gear S3 Value Pack Update

Samsung Electronics released a value pack update for the Gear S3 at the end of March that is currently available in major markets and will be available in other markets in the near future. Packed with enhancements that bolster the device’s utility and streamline users’ access to the information they rely on, the update, which also adds convenient functions to the Gear S2, reflects Samsung’s unwavering commitment to refining its smartwatches’ user experience.
Speaking of lifting, exercising with the Gear S3’s Samsung Health app has also been enhanced, thanks to an improved user interface (UI) and new workout features. Now, when viewing workout results, users will be informed of how much time they spent in each heart rate zone via simple, color-classified graphs, and will also be kept abreast of their daily heart rate range. In addition, a newly added streamlined Stretching guide is activated after 50 minutes of inactivity and utilizes a counting sound to guide users through the activity.
Other Samsung Health enhancements include the abilities to auto-locate and record approximate location for detected running or walking, as well as sync pace-setter running targets from the Samsung Health app on your phone with the Gear S3.
Users who need a little reminder now and then to kick-start their workout routine can utilize the updated Reminder app, which now allows you to add specific dates for reminders delivered via S Voice.* This means that a command such as “Remind me to work out at 7:00pm this Sunday” will produce the desired alert on the desired day. The update also allows you to easily edit the titles of dictated reminders, and is compatible with the Gear S2.
The Gear S3’s Accessibility features have been enhanced to offer users more control over their device’s display. Now, after activating ‘Direct access’ in the Accessibility menu, users will be able to enable new, readability-focused screen options including ‘Dark screen’, ‘Greyscale’ and ‘Negative colors’.
Samsung has also made it easier for users to track down their Gear S3 in the event that it is misplaced. Now, under the Find My Gear section of the Gear Manager app, which allows users to lock their lost device remotely to prevent unauthorized use, users may add personal contact information, such as an email address or phone number, to display on the smartwatch’s lock screen.
Other notable value pack additions include an auto-calibration option for the Alti/Barometer and a simplified Settings menu. Furthermore, with new complications for select watch faces**, users can control the music player (Play/ Pause) and check the date directly from the Gear S3’s watch face.
The News Briefing widget can also be more easily navigated, thanks to an enhanced up/down button interface. Finally, for added convenience, the Stopwatch counting time has been increased from one hour to three hours.

Напомним, что с середины января пользователям iPhone последних поколений стало доступно официальное приложение для синхронизации со смарт-часами Samsung Gear S2, Samsung Gear S3 и фитнес-трэкером Samsung Gear Fit 2.
