Samsung, Verizon and Qualcomm set new record of 711 Mbps upload speed

Samsung Electronics Co. together with American wireless carrier Verizon and mobile chip maker Qualcomm Technologies has demonstrated ultra-fast 711 Mbps upload speeds, which would enable fast and seamless data sharing in crowed places like transit hubs and shopping malls.
The uplink speed of 711 megabits per second (Mbps) is equivalent to uploading one 1-gigabyte (GB) movie in about 10 seconds. At this speed, people would easily upload video and pictures on social media or directly share data with other users in densely populated areas. It also allows people working from home to upload and synchronize massive files to effortlessly complete simultaneous editing of documents in cloud, said Samsung Electronics in a press release on Friday.
The upload speed of 711 Mbps is the fastest the companies have achieved ever. Previous multi-gigabit speeds have been recorded on downloads only, Samsung Electronics said.
Demonstration was made in a lab trial by combining “400MHz of Verizon’s 5G mmWave frequency and 20MHz of 4G frequency using the latest 5G technologies, including mmWave carrier aggregation and Single-User MIMO (SU-MIMO),” explained Samsung. Network technology used in the demo also included “Samsung’s 28GHz 5G Compact Macro and virtualized RAN (vRAN) and Core (vCore)” as well as “a smartphone form-factor test device powered by the Qualcomm flagship Snapdragon X65 5G Modem-RF System,” the company added.
Samsung’s Compact Macro is a compact and lightweight solution that can be installed on the sides of buildings and utility poles, enabling swift build-out of 5G networks, according to the press release.

Samsung, Boeing in talks for future aircraft: source

US aircraft manufacturer Boeing has been working with South Korean tech giant Samsung Electronics to incorporate high-speed mobile technology and next-generation information systems into its latest airplane models, according to a Boeing official in Seoul on Friday.
“We are in works with Samsung and studying to use their technologies like mobile connectivity,” he told The Korea Herald.
“Korea’s global leadership in high-speed mobile technology and next-generation information systems are just a few examples of areas we continue to explore together. We continue to work closely with them to research technologies that can be introduced on our airplanes,” he said, without elaborating on details of the joint study.
Boeing has been pursuing cooperation with diverse companies to develop future aviation systems and passengers' in-flight experience.
In 2012, Boeing and Samsung signed a partnership to develop entertainment and communication technologies inside aircraft, such as by using Samsung’s electronic devices like the Galaxy Tab for displays.
It is the first time Boeing has hinted at its technical cooperation with Samsung for future aircraft.
“As airplanes become more systemic in terms of fly-by-wire, there will be a number of areas where next-generation technology can continue to play a vital role in commercial aviation, both from an operations standpoint as well as inside the cabin for passengers,” he added. Fly-by-wire refers to a semiautonomous and typically computer-regulated system for controlling the flight of an aircraft.
Samsung Electronics said it has no knowledge of such a project.
Industry watchers said that Samsung’s advanced technologies, such as wireless communications and mobile connectivity, could be crucial in developing in-flight wireless technology.
“While aircraft safety has not been tested (on the impact of mobile connectivity to the navigation system), such technologies could be extended to enhance the in-flight entertainment system and directly impact passengers’ flight experience. This is the area where Samsung can play a pivotal role,” said Yoo Chang-kyung, a professor of aerospace engineering at Inha University.
He added that Korean IT could be used to develop the next-generation fly-by-wire system, once pilotless planes become subject for commercialization.
Another industry insider echoed the view that such wireless technology could change the contents of cabin services.
“Passengers could watch visual contents in real time and credit card transactions for duty-free items could be done more conveniently,” said an engineer at a South Korean air carrier.
Meanwhile, despite the expanding low-cost carrier market and increasing popularity of single-aisle aircraft for short-distance flights, Boeing said its wide-bodied 787 models have seen growing demand.
Boeing 787 Dreamliners are designed for fuel efficiency and have low maintenance costs, using no-bleed engine architecture and raked wingtips equipped with low-noise chevrons. They can fly up to 14,140 kilometers at 25 percent fuel savings. The windows are electronically dimmable, and also 40 percent larger than those of European rival Airbus’s A350.
According to Boeing, its 787 planes are leading the market. It had received 1,319 orders from 71 customers as of last month. Deliveries will surpass 650 this month, the American aircraft maker said.
“Figures show that 787 is the ‘perfect platform’ for airlines -- especially popular in the Asia market, which is the world’s largest wide-body market. (The) 787 has the efficiency of single-aisle planes and the capacity of wide-body models,” said Darren Hulst, senior managing director of market analysis and sales support for Boeing.
According to Boeing, the Korean aviation industry has showed a gradual increase in recent years, significantly driven by the operation of LCCs.
Boeing data showed that since 2012, the portion of LCCs in the Korean market saw an annual growth rate of at least 9 percent.
Meanwhile, the global share of LCCs hit 31 percent in 2017, an increase of more than 10 percent over a decade.

Release 15 NSA (Non-standalone).
5G (5G next-generation core network, NGC).
В саммите ведущих компаний, продвигающих технологии 5G, помимо Samsung, приняли участие представители AT&T, BT, China Mobile, China Telecom, Deutsche Telekom, Ericsson, Fujitsu, Huawei, Intel, KT Corporation, LG Electronics, LG U+, MediaTek Inc., NEC Corporation, Nokia, NTT DOCOMO, Orange, Qualcomm Technologies, Inc., SK Telecom, Sony Mobile Communications Inc., Spitit, TIM, Telefonica, Telia Company, T-Mobile USA, Verizon, Vodafone, ZTE.

World’s First LTE-Railway Service on High-speed Train Goes Live in Korea, Supplied by Samsung and KT

Next-generation technology for smart train/metro enables high-speed, ultra-reliable communications for new train line serving PyeongChang, Korea winter sports region

Samsung and Korean telecom firm KT announced today that the LTE-Railway (LTE-R) network for the new Wonju-Gangneung high-speed train line is now live. The activation represents the world’s first application of LTE-R technology to a high-speed train, with the new line traveling up to 250km/hour (155 mph). The network will include key features such as Mission-Critical Push-to-talk (MCPTT) based on the 3GPP standards Release 13.
The new Wonju-Gangneung line, operated by the Korea Rail Network Authority (KRNA), spans 120 kilometers (75 miles) long, and will provide the public faster, easier access to the largest winter sports facilities in Korea, including PyeongChang. The LTE-R network is applied across the line’s seven stations, while the solution is interoperable with legacy Trunked Radio System (TRS), Very High Frequency (VHF) systems, and the national Public-Safety LTE (PS-LTE) network.
“We are delighted to work with Samsung to provide critical communications systems for this brand new high-speed train line,” said Yihan Kim, Senior Vice President and Head of Enterprise Business Performing Unit of KT. “The new line puts Gangneung only two hours away from Seoul, and LTE-R will make the journey for PyeongChang visitors a much safer and reliable experience.”
“Following Samsung’s first commercial deployment of LTE-R at the Busan Metro last April, this new implementation demonstrates the maturation and validation of our LTE-R solutions for high-speed trains,” said GY Seo, Senior Vice President and Head of Global Sales and Marketing Team in Networks Business, Samsung Electronics. “We look forward to continued collaboration with KT in the deployment of the most innovative critical-communications technologies across the country.”
LTE-R is a next-generation communications technology for smart train and metro services, enabling high-speed wireless voice and data communications inside trains, from train to ground and from train to train. In particular, LTE-R enables smooth and stable mission-critical communications – including MCPTT, group calls and VoLTE – between train personnel and control centers. In specific, Samsung has provided its radio access network operating in 700 MHz, a global band for LTE-based Public Protection and Disaster Relief (PPDR), a dedicated core network including EPC, IMS and PTT servers deployed in two control centers, as well as rugged smartphones (SM-G888N0) for professionals.
Samsung, Korea’s leading LTE-R supplier, was elected as a supplier for all five LTE-R projects in Korea in 2015. Notably, its LTE-R solution is already in service on the 41 kilometer (26 miles)-long Busan Metro line 1 covering 40 stations in Korea’s second largest city. Launched by Samsung in April 2017, it represents the nation’s first case of LTE-R technology being used during operation of a train/metro. Samsung is also currently deploying LTE-R on the line between Incheon International Airport and Seoul Station in the center of the Capital.

KDDI and Samsung Break Track Record in High-Speed 5G Mobility Test

KDDI and Samsung Electronics today announced the completion of a comprehensive set of 5G tests which demonstrate the viability and performance of 5G millimeter wave mobility solutions at speeds over 190km per hour which is the fastest record in the world. The successful results highlight the potential and capability of 5G to support a wide variety of future service scenarios.
The demonstration, which took place at ‘Everland SPEEDWAY’ in Korea, involved a battery of individual tests to examine the performance of Samsung’s end-to-end 5G mmWave technology. Specifically, as a vehicle accelerated from 0 to 205km per hour on the race track between multiple 5G base stations, the test measured and evaluated a variety of metrics, including handover interruption time, uplink and downlink throughput stability, and latency stability (or “jitter”).
In addition, KDDI and Samsung also demonstrated a successful handover scenario, with Samsung’s 5G device attaching to the 5G base station as it approached the service area, and successfully being handed over to the target cell at a speed of 192km per hour (GPS speed).
Woojune Kim, Senior Vice President and Head of Next Generation Strategy in Networks Business at Samsung Electronics, said, “It is becoming increasingly important that we accelerate our focus on 5G’s ability to meet a growing number of performance metrics. Until now, peak bandwidth has been the common refrain, and certainly a big component of the future of 5G. However, the test we conducted with KDDI will help us build a more diverse portfolio of future 5G use cases.”
“The trial successfully showcased stable performance under high-speed mobility conditions which will dramatically increase the service experience of users in vehicles,” said Akira Matsunaga, Senior Director, Mobile Network Technical Development at KDDI. “We will continue our joint efforts with Samsung to test next generation technology to unprecedented levels and discover new service cases.”
The test achievements build upon a string of mobility-related successes over the past several years. In February of this year, Samsung and KDDI successfully demonstrated 5G handover capability in an urban city environment at speeds of up to 60km/h on public roads. Both companies are in discussion with 5G trials for multiple 5G service cases.
One of the most exciting prospects of 5G technology is the potential for new and highly specialized service scenarios that go beyond traditional smart device connectivity. 5G’s ability to deliver on this promise is directly tied to its ability to meet the unique performance needs of a wide number of increasingly-connected industries, from Smart City IoT to Connected Cars and more. Arqiva and Samsung Kick off UK’s First 5G Fixed Wireless Access Trial

Technology now available for demonstration in Arqiva’s central London headquarters

Following a statement of intent in February, leading UK communications infrastructure company Arqiva and Samsung Electronics have today announced that the first field trial of 5G Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) technology in the UK and Europe is now live in central London.
Powered by Samsung’s 5G network solution and customer premises equipment (CPE), and using Arqiva’s 28GHz millimetre wave (mmWave) spectrum, the 5G FWA system consists of three main components:
A Radio Access Unit located on the rooftop of Arqiva’s Fitzrovia office wirelessly links to an easily installable CPE – or router – located by a window inside Arqiva’s nearby headquarters. Samsung’s system – which implements intelligent beam-forming technology and high-frequency mmWave spectrum – then provides high bandwidth connectivity. In commercial implementations, the compact access unit can be mounted on lampposts or similar street furniture to provide reliable gigabit-per-second service to neighbourhoods and businesses alike. The final component is Samsung’s virtualized core – responsible for managing user connections and data routing from Arqiva’s network to the internet – which is running on Arqiva’s data centre servers.
The primary aim of the trial is to demonstrate the stability of the FWA service, and its potential as a fast-to-market and cost-effective alternative to fibre for connectivity to homes and businesses. Despite a link distance of several hundred meters, the system has established a stable two-way mmWave link with downlink speeds of around 1Gb per second at the CPE. Allowing for simultaneous streaming of more than 25 UHD 4K TV channels as an illustration, this more than meets the needs of today’s typical household with considerable room for future growth.
As the trial progresses, both companies look forward to further maximising the performance capability of the system, improving the value of future network infrastructure and spectrum investments.
Paul Kyungwhoon Cheun, Executive Vice President and Head of the Next Generation Communications Business Team at Samsung Electronics, said: “One of the most exciting prospects that 5G is expected to bring to the table is the exploration of powerful new use cases outside of traditional smart device mobile connectivity. Our trial efforts with Arqiva give us the chance to demonstrate this first hand, and we view this demonstration as a door-opener for new and compelling connected service opportunities in the UK, Europe and worldwide.”
Simon Beresford-Wylie, CEO of Arqiva, said: “This trial is the first of its kind in Europe, let alone the UK – and we are hugely excited about the high data rates, low latency and growth potential we’re going to be able to demonstrate. Though only a proof of concept at this stage, we are confident that this trial with Samsung will showcase not only 5G FWA’s potential for delivering ultrafast broadband but also the value of the 28GHz band in helping achieve this.
“We’ve seen a great level of response so far from our entire customer base, including leading mobile operators, fixed broadband providers, broadcasters and media companies. This trial will be particularly interesting for this audience as it looks to a future of ubiquitous UHD, and the file sizes that go with it.”
The showcase consists of a series of six stations. These include an overview of FWA technology and how it works, examples of 5G use cases, demonstrations of 4K UHD and Virtual Reality (VR) content streaming, and a look at possible applications of 5G in the future.
The trial will run for a four-month period, during which time anticipated visitors include representatives from the UK Government, Mobile Network Operators (MNOs), Fixed Network Operators, media companies, analysts and more. There are also plans to extend the trial’s coverage to additional nearby buildings over its duration.
