Южнокорейский техногигант Samsung интегрирует кастодиальный и торговый сервис биткоин-биржи Gemini в свой блокчейн-кошелёк, сообщает влиятельный американский журнал Forbes. Благодаря специальному приложению владельцы электронных гаджетов этого брэнда, проживающие в США и Канаде, получат возможность покупать, продавать, обменивать и хранить цифровые активы.

Samsung integrates blockchain wallet with Gemini exchange

Samsung, the South Korean smartphone giant that has been experimenting with bitcoin for some time, is doubling down on cryptocurrency.
Samsung's Blockchain Wallet will add support for users of U.S. bitcoin and crypto exchange Gemini in North America, it has been revealed.
Users of Samsung's crypto wallet, which allows self custody of bitcoin and crypto directly on newer Samsung Galaxy models, will be able to buy and sell bitcoin and a small selection of other cryptocurrencies via the Gemini exchange.
They will also be able to view Gemini account balances and transfer their bitcoin and crypto into a higher security cold storage account.
"Crypto is not just a technology, it is a movement," said Gemini chief executive Tyler Winklevoss, who, along with his twin brother, has campaigned for Wall Street adoption of bitcoin and crypto.
"We are proud to be working with Samsung to bring crypto’s promise of greater choice, independence, and opportunity to more individuals around the world."
Samsung has become an early leader in smartphone bitcoin and cryptocurrency support after introducing the Blockchain Keystore last year—a move that could boost ailing bitcoin and crypto adoption.
Many in the bitcoin and cryptocurrency community see stalled user adoption as one of the biggest hurdles the nascent technology is currently facing.
Clunkey exchanges and clumsy customer support are common complaints made against bitcoin and crypto services, with many potential users lacking the required technology confidence to buy and store cryptocurrencies themselves.
"For millions of Samsung users across the U.S. and Canada, being able to store crypto directly on their phones lowers another barrier to entry," said Jeanine Hightower-Sellitto, managing director of operations at Gemini.
The partnership comes as bitcoin and cryptocurrency exchanges around the world see user registrations and trading volumes soar amid the coronavirus pandemic.
"Customer demand for regulated crypto products has remained strong across the investing spectrum, from retail to institutional investors, throughout the pandemic and we expect that demand to continue to grow," Hightower-Sellitto added.

Samsung Electronics to Present Blockchain Strategy to Smartphone Developers in U.S.

Samsung Electronics will present its blockchain technologies at the SDC Developer 2019 in San Jose, California, in October.

Samsung Electronics will share the trends of next-generation smartphone technologies with developers from around the world in the annual conference, which will be held at the San Jose Convention Center on Oct. 29-30.
Samsung Electronics has held SDC in San Francisco every year since 2013. The company will disclose its blockchain technologies, including Samsung Blockchain Key Store, during this year’s event, which is held at a place where Apple has held the Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC).
Samsung Electronics introduced digital asset services such as “Samsung Blockchain Wallet” ahead of Apple through the Galaxy S10 launched in March. The company will directly introduce “Blockchain Key Store and Wallet” on the home ground of its chief rival.
"Samsung Electronics has been a latecomer in mobile operating system (OS) and app store ecosystems, although it has been a strong player in the hardware market including smartphones. But it is seeking to beat its competitors in the dApp ecosystem based on blockchains,” an industry insider said. "Recently, Samsung Electronics expanded software development kit (SDK)’s support areas for the blockchain Key Store to include Ethereum and Bitcoin and even Kakao Klaytn. The move was made for the popularization of dApp services."

Samsung is Manufacturing ASIC Chips For Bitcoin Mining

Samsung, the largest company in South Korea which is accountable for a large portion of the country’s economy, has started the production phase of bitcoin and cryptocurrency mining equipment and ASIC mining chips.
Local media outlets reported that Samsung partnered with a Chinese bitcoin mining equipment manufacturer last year and finished the development of its ASIC chips. Samsung, which operates one of the largest semi-conductor manufacturing plants in the world, will manufacture and supply cryptocurrency mining equipment to the Chinese market first.
In the long-term, Samsung plans to expand its mining equipment venture from China to other regions like South Korea and Japan that have a stronger demand for cryptocurrencies than other countries.
A Samsung spokesperson told local media that the company will operate a foundry to manufacture mining equipment and to match the supply requested by the Chinese bitcoin mining firm it has partnered with. In the beginning, Samsung said it will focus its venture on targeting the Chinese market and because Samsung has just started its foundry business, it is not unsure of the revenues its mining venture can generate.
“Samsung is operating a foundry that supplies a Chinese cryptocurrency mining firm with mining equipment and ASIC chips. Since Samsung has just begun its cryptocurrency mining venture, it is unsure of the revenues it can generate from it,” a spokesperson said.
In the upcoming months, Samsung also intends to manufacture GPU miners for miners targeting small cryptocurrencies.
Samsung has a large-scale and sophisticated semi-conductor manufacturing plants which are capable of matching orders of any size. Since last year, Samsung has been the sole supplier of OLED screens for Apple’s iPhone X production line, because it has been the only company that is able to match the supply needed by Apple.
While Apple has invested several billions of dollars in Samsung’s competitor LG to manufacture OLED screens, no company has been able to match Samsung in manufacturing chips and electronic components.
Currently, Taiwan’s TSMC remains as the only major semi-conductor manufacturing firm and foundry operator to support a major bitcoin mining equipment manufacturer in Bitmain. The entrance of Samsung in the global cryptocurrency mining sector could provide Bitmain and its partner company TSMC their first real competitor.
Hwang Min-seong, an analyst at Samsung Securities, told local media outlets that Samsung will be able to increase its revenues through ASIC chip manufacturing. But, until the company expands its venture internationally, it will be difficult for Samsung’s ASIC chip manufacturing division to have a major impact on the revenues of Samsung Electronics.
“Samsung Electronics could increase its revenues through ASIC chip manufacturing but because the foundry only accounts for a small portion of the company’s semi-conductor manufacturing plant, it is difficult to predict that the firm’s mining venture will have a significant impact on the company’s revenues.”

Портал ETNews сообщает, что Samsung Electronics заключил крупную сделку на поставку чипов российской компании Baikal, специализирующейся на производстве оборудования для майнинга.

Samsung Electronics to Produce ASICs for a Russian Bitcoin Mining Hardware Company

South Korean semiconductor industries are faced with unexpected high demands due to booming of Bitcoin mining. Amount of work recently made a sudden increase for semiconductor foundries and OSAT (Outsourced Semiconductor Assembly & Test) industries. Number of orders is also flooding towards packaging equipment manufacturers.
According to industries on the 21st, it is confirmed that Samsung Electronics recently signed off on a contract with Baikal, which is a Russian Bitcoin mining hardware (HW) company, regarding foundry business for ASIC (Application-Specific Integrated Circuit) for mining. Sample production is currently finished, and Samsung Electronics is going to mass-produce these semiconductors on full-scale starting from January of 2018 through 14nm process. Baikal is planning to release new Bitcoin miners through chips that are produced from Samsung Electronics’ plants.
It is very unusual that Samsung Electronics, which has opened its foundry business to global strategic customers such as Apple and Qualcomm, signed off on a contract with an unfamiliar Russian company. “We believe that Samsung Electronics opened its foundry business to Baikal for future investments as HW markets related to virtual currency have been heating up recently.” said a representative who is familiar with Samsung Electronics. “Taiwan’s TSMC is already making huge sales in this field.”
Bitcoin mining HW industries have emerged as big investors for semiconductor markets. Bitcoin does not have a central control agency and it is issued through mining process. One can obtain certain amount of Bicoin by cracking a code through computers. Bitcoin uses SHA-256, which is a standard hash function designated by NSA (National Security Agency). ASIC that is used for mining HW focuses on this hash function processing. Before 2013 when there were not any miners, general GPUs (Graphic Processing Unit) and FPGAs (Field-Programmable Gate Array) were used. However semiconductors and miners for mining are used nowadays. Compared to PCs that use regular GPUs, processing speed of hash function of miners is about 1,000 times faster.
