Samsung Makes It Easier to Use Blockchain on Galaxy Devices With Support for Hardware Wallets

Samsung Electronics announced that blockchain users can now manage and trade virtual assets from third-party wallets on Samsung Galaxy smartphones. The update makes it easier for blockchain users to access and process transactions by importing virtual assets stored on select cold hardware wallets to the Samsung Blockchain Wallet available on most Galaxy smartphones.1

Support for hardware wallets provides Galaxy blockchain with a consistent user experience of managing crypto assets from one convenient location. In addition to the Samsung Blockchain Keystore, Galaxy smartphones can now connect to hardware wallets including the Ledger Nano S and Ledger Nano X.2 Samsung Blockchain Wallet users will also be able to keep up with the latest trends in cryptocurrency with a dedicated newsfeed in the app featuring articles from CoinDesk, one of the top blockchain news outlets.

New Mobile Experiences Powered by Advanced Security

After launching with the Galaxy S10 in 2019, the Samsung Blockchain Wallet has grown to support some of the most popular cryptocurrencies including Bitcoin, Ethereum, ERC tokens, Tron (TRX), and TRC tokens. It also allows Galaxy users to explore decentralized apps (DApp) that use blockchain technology to authenticate the exchange of digital assets. From games to social media, finance, security and more, Samsung provides access to the latest DApps and offers recommendations for users across a variety of categories.

To store and manage virtual assets, devices must be secure. Samsung’s mobile blockchain solutions are made possible by the defense-grade Samsung Knox security platform. The private keys used for cryptocurrency and DApps are encrypted and stored in an area isolated from the main operating system called the Samsung Blockchain Keystore. This information is further protected by a secure processor and can only be accessed by providing the asset owner’s PIN or fingerprint.

Samsung believes innovation can only happen through an open and collaborative approach and has opened access to its blockchain ecosystem with the Samsung Blockchain SDK. Developers can build DApps that generate, store, and manage blockchain accounts easily and process transactions with APIs dedicated to each ledger system. It also provides APIs allowing DApps to securely sign for transfers of virtual assets using third-party hardware wallets.

Samsung SDS holds developer conference in Seoul

IT solutions developer Samsung SDS hosted Techtonic 2019, a developer conference for artificial intelligence, blockchain and cloud computing in Seoul on Nov. 14.
The annual conference which was launched last year is aimed at sharing the firm’s cutting-edge technologies with developers, academia and students.
This year, some 1,200 participants took part in the conference.
Samsung SDS Innovation Framework is a solution that helps companies to obtain strategic investments and technical capability, and run business project contests by publishing open source codes.
Among solutions unveiled at the event was a software tool that helps speed up the development of artificial intelligence programs. It improves the labeling work, which analyzes and attaches data with meaningful tags, by up to 80 percent compared to conventional solutions. It also helps developers to choose the optimized deep learning model - for example, to utilize GPUs and memory chips - in AI development.
Samsung SDS also showcased Site Reliability Engineering, a software program that allows companies to distribute and run services in global markets. The program has been adopted in a chatbot application by tech giant Samsung Electronics’ mobile division. 
“The company will continue to nurture the ecosystem for developers by publishing open source code and holding developer conferences,” said Samsung SDS CEO Hong Won-pyo.

Samsung is making TIZEN TV OS available to third-party TV makers for the first time.

Samsung Electronics introduced digital asset services such as “Samsung Blockchain Wallet” ahead of Apple through the Galaxy S10 launched in March. The company will directly introduce “Blockchain Key Store and Wallet” on the home ground of its chief rival.
"Samsung Electronics has been a latecomer in mobile operating system (OS) and app store ecosystems, although it has been a strong player in the hardware market including smartphones. But it is seeking to beat its competitors in the dApp ecosystem based on blockchains,” an industry insider said. "Recently, Samsung Electronics expanded software development kit (SDK)’s support areas for the blockchain Key Store to include Ethereum and Bitcoin and even Kakao Klaytn. The move was made for the popularization of dApp services."

Samsung SDS to expand partnerships for ‘intelligent factory’

Samsung SDS said May 8 it will expand partnerships with major manufacturers to apply its latest IT platform to improve efficiency and safety in their factories. 
The IT service unit under Samsung Electronics said it will utilize new technologies, such as artificial intelligence, big data, cloud and blockchain, to provide “intelligent factory” solutions for partners at home and abroad.
During Real 2019, an event for its partners, Samsung SDS showcased how its smart factory platform integrates its IT technology and manufacturing expertise to enhance the production, logistics, inspection and maintenance processes.
Last month, Samsung SDS was listed on the Top 50 Blockchain Companies by American business magazine Forbes, with its enterprise blockchain platform, Nexledger, applied in various fields, such as the finance, manufacturing, logistics and public sectors.

Samsung SDS Launched New Version of Enterprise Blockchain Platform

Samsung SDS – a consultancy and IT subsidiary of Samsung Group – has announced the release of Nexledger Universal, the next version of an enterprise blockchain platform.
According to its press release, the application programming interface of Nexledger Universal is applicable to various common open source blockchains such as Ethereum, Hyperledger Fabric and its own Samsung SDS NCA (Nexledger Consensus Algorithm).
Currently available on Microsoft’s Azure marketplace, Nexledger Universal has improved its security functions, with faster performance by adopting white box cryptography technology.
The platform allows its users to develop application services such as payment settlement, user authentication, and proof of originality.
“We plan to expand our cloud-based blockchain platform by registering Nexledger Universal on other cloud marketplaces.” stated Jeanie Hong, senior vice president, leader of Blockchain Center of Samsung SDS.
Last month, Samsung SDS has reportedly announced a partnership with a fellow multinational IT company from India, Tech Mahindra, to push Nexledger blockchain platform around the world.
Earlier, Hong Yuan Zhen, President, and CEO of Samsung SDS, have stated that global manufacturing industry can take advantages of blockchain to increase its productivity. He claimed his belief in blockchain technology, which can offer businesses technical support, as well as the capability to drive better business solutions.

Samsung SDS unveils blockchain platform accelerator

Samsung SDS said on Feb. 14 that it has developed its own blockchain accelerator technology compatible with IBM‘s open source platform for enterprises.
During the IBM Think conference held in San Francisco, Samsung SDS introduced Nexledger Accelerator, which can improve the function of Hyperledger Fabric, IBM’s business blockchain framework.
Nexledger is a blockchain platform designed to provide an integrated solution to businesses looking to reduce expenses while managing digital financial transactions and data exchange. 
Samsung SDS said it will share Nexledger Accelerator’s technology road map and testing kit in GitHub, the world’s leading software development platform, to allow easy access to outside developers. 
The Korean company, a member of the Hyperledger Alliance formed by IBM, said it will expand collaboration with the US tech behemoth in blockchain technology development.
Samsung SDS posted 13.3 trillion won (US$11.80 billion) in sales in 2018, becoming the nation’s first IT service provider to exceed the 10 trillion won threshold.

Samsung SDS to Power World’s First Exports Customs Clearance Blockchain in Korea

The Korea Customs Service (KCS) has entered an agreement with Samsung SDS to implement the latter’s blockchain technology for an export customs clearance system.
Samsung SDS, the IT subsidiary and technology provider of Korea’s largest conglomerate Samsung, will develop the world’s first blockchain-based export customs logistics service for the Korea Customs Service to enable efficiency and curb fraud in the industry.
A memorandum of understanding between the two entities also sees 48 other organizations and companies including relevant government authorities, shipping operators, logistics firms and insurance providers join the agreement, a press release said.
Samsung SDS will use Nexledger, its enterprise blockchain platform, for the customs platform to fundamentally share export-related documents seamlessly between stakeholders in every step of the export trading process from manufacturing, storage, customs declaration to final delivery of the shipment.
Launched in April 2017, Nexledger acts as a cloud computing solution for corporations and government authorities like the KCS to build their own services as an added layer. The core platform enables real-time transaction processing in scale, smart contracts as well as a management monitoring system developed for various industries including finance, manufacturing and the public sector.
For instance, the Seoul metropolitan government chose Samsung SDS to apply Nexledger tech for the capital city’s entire municipal administration by 2022 to enable transparency and improve citizen convenience.
Since its launch, Nexledger’s biggest impact remains in Korea’s logistics industry. In May 2017, Samsung SDS launched a blockchain consortium with government authorities including the KCS, Korea’s Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries, logistics giant Hyundai Merchant Marine and tech giant IBM Korea.
The endeavor saw Nexledger’s tech successfully power a Korea-China shipment trial a year ago. The 7-month pilot to record and track shipping logistics and documents related to both exports/imports concluded in December 2017.
As reported by CCN in May, the KCS and Samsung SDS began developing the customs clearance platform to issue Certificates of Origin, a crucial international trade document that certifies that goods in a particular export shipment are wholly obtained, produced, manufactured or processed in a particular country, on a blockchain.
The KCS confirmed a full pilot of the dedicated blockchain platform in June.
Nexledger is also being adopted by Korea’s commercial banking industry to power a new customer ID verification platform that improves on a decades-old public certification system.

Samsung SDS unveils blockchain-based certification platform BankSign

Samsung SDS Co., an IT arm of South Korea's largest conglomerate, Samsung, said Monday it developed a blockchain-based certification platform called BankSign that will make it easier for people to carry out transactions among different banks.
The platform, set up in cooperation with the Korea Federation of Banks, allows users to carry out transactions on different banks' mobile systems while only requiring certification from one of them. The certification can be made using various methods, including password, fingerprints, and patterns, with the very nature of blockchain making forgeries and alterations extremely difficult.
The IT company said safety is insured by connecting banks' systems and the data-sharing network.
Through such sharing, Samsung SDS said the certification can be valid for up to three years.
Samsung SDS first launched a division devoted to the development of the blockchain technology in 2015, and showcased its first business platform, Nexledger, in 2017.
"BankSign is the first application of the much-anticipated blockchain technology on banking services," Samsung SDS said.
"The company will continue to expand its digital transformation business, which will bolster competitiveness of banks and financial institutions," it added.

Samsung SDS kickstarts blockchain-based digital finance biz

Samsung SDS on June 4 unveiled a new blockchain-based digital finance platform called Nexfinance as it is speeding up partnerships within the financial and insurance industries. 
The IT services unit of Samsung Group said the new open platform, based on artificial intelligence, blockchain and big data technologies, supports financial organizations to offer more convenient services with heightened security. They include: digital identity, a blockchain-based ID for safer customer data use; finance concierge, an asset management service based on AI and big data analysis; AI assistant and automatic insurance claims both aimed at improving customer convenience overall in using financial services.
The firm said it is already working with financial organizations for wider adoption of the platform. It has been working on an authentication system together with its sister firm Samsung Card since last year and is doing a similar project with Korea Federation of Banks this year. More recently, it has been named a preferred bidder to build a blockchain system project for Korea Life Insurance Association. 
“Samsung SDS is starting digital finance business in earnest through Nexfinance. We aim to become a partner for the financial industry’s digital transformation,” said Yoo Heung-joon, digital business chief of Samsung SDS.

Samsung SDS (CEP Hong Won-pyo) decided on May 3rd to strengthen its blockchain business, which will revolutionize the transactions between Ernst & Young (EY), a global accounting and consulting firm, and companies in the manufacturing, logistics, and finance business.
EY is a blockchain global consulting company that uses blockchain to lead business innovation based on SCM (Supply Chain Management)/ ERP (Enterprise Resource Management) systems and MES (Manufacturing execution system) combined with IoT.

Samsung SDS wins blockchain project from Seoul Metropolitan Govt

Samsung SDS said Sunday that it will expand its blockchain business from industries to the public sector, marking its newly clinched deal with the Seoul Metropolitan Government. 
The software solution development unit of Samsung will take part in the Seoul Metropolitan Government’s project to establish an information strategy plan based on blockchain technology. 
The city government plans to apply blockchain technology to its administrative work across the city’s welfare, public safety and transportation affairs by 2022 to improve transparency operations and increase convenience for citizens. 
Such technology is being increasingly used for online financial transactions, as it allows digital information to be distributed but not copied. 
Early this year, Samsung SDS commercialized its blockchain platform Nexledger by applying it to the affiliated Samsung Card. Last month, the company also tested the application of the platform to logistical systems by shipping companies, including Hyundai Marine Merchant. 
“Samsung SDS’ blockchain technology and consulting capabilities will contribute to Seoul’s leap as a top-rate global city,” said Hong Won-pyo, CEO of Samsung SDS.

Samsung SDS Becomes First Korean Company Joining Global Blockchain Alliance

The Enterprise Ehtereum Alliance (EEA) announced that Samsung SDS Co. has become the first South Korean company joining the alliance at the Consensus 2017 Blockchain Summit held in New York on May 22 (local time).
The EEA is a global alliance founded by 30 global corporate giants such as Microsoft, Intel, JP Morgan and ING to jointly develop enterprise blockchain solutions based on the Ethereum technology, which is considered a key protocol for the blockchain.
In the past, financial companies recorded financial data and transactions at its servers so there were high risks of hacking. However, blockchain enables data sharing across a network of individual computers rather than focusing on the server of specific companies.
Samsung SDS was selected as a new member of the alliance as its ability to develop digital identification card and payment services based on "Nexledger TM," the company’s blockchain platform for corporations, and to actually run the platform in Samsung Card’s digital payment services was highly esteemed.
With the participation in EEA as a member, Samsung SDS aims to increase the technology competitiveness of "Nexledger TM" as well as find new business opportunity in the global blockchain market through partnerships with global partners.
In particular, the company plans to expand “smart contract” modules which digitalize various contracts, which are the foundation of all economic activities, and have a lower risk of forgeries and alterations. First, it will expand the modules from the financial sector, including banking service, stock trading and insurance screening and payment, to the sectors in which the reliability of contracts between contractors is the most important such as public service, medical care, manufacturing and distribution.
