Galaxy Watch4 owners continue to complain about the poor performance of the Samsung Health service and the reduction in fitness monitoring features

After an avalanche of critical reviews in the forums of owners of the latest Samsung wearable devices based on WearOS 3 from Google, user dissatisfaction manifested itself even on such a well-known Internet portal as XDA-developers. Buyers of rather expensive Galaxy Watch4 note the deterioration of the proprietary health monitoring service and the disappearance of a number of useful functions that are available on previous models using the TIZEN operating platform. Panellists wonder why the Galaxy Watch4 advertised on every corner went on sale with so many bugs and stripped-down features. Increasingly, there are voices about class-action lawsuits against the manufacturer for the apparent inconsistency of advertising promises with the real possibilities of this "miscarriage", born of the "marriage" between Samsung and Google. It is no less surprising that both corporations are proud to announce the "great collaboration", and Google has even begun to advertise Samsung smartphones.

The negative tone of discussion regarding the Galaxy Watch4 also prevails on other Internet resources, where problems are honestly discussed without regard to advertising chatter. On the official website of Samsung Russia ( https://www.samsung.com/ru/watches/all-watches/ ), it is easy to notice that all previous models of wearable devices of the Gear and Galaxy families using the proprietary TIZEN platform receive only good and excellent reviews (4-5 points out of 5 possible). At the same time, the average score of the Galaxy Watch4 is 1-3 points lower.

I wonder if Samsung will draw at least some adequate conclusions from this, rather than artificially raising the customer rating with the help of paid bots?

Samsung is madly happy with the "harmonious synergy" with Google. However, users of Galaxy smartphones and Galaxy Watch4 do not share this optimism.

Some time ago, Samsung agreed to kill its own operating platform, TIZEN, in exchange for a "lucky chance" to become the hardware appendage of Google's IT monster. The south korean manufacturer has received tasty orders for the supply of semiconductors, displays and processors to american "partners" from Mountain View. However, the victims of this "super-profitable for shareholders" deal were the owners of the latest generation of smartphones and Galaxy smartwatches. In recent days, Internet resources and forums dedicated to mobile gadgets are full of messages about a growing avalanche of problems associated with gross software bugs on Android devices. The operating system from Google, which Samsung has been imposing on users of its mobile gadgets for many years, is causing more and more complaints for poor performance and leakage of personal data. For example, owners of Galaxy A and Galaxy M smartphones complain of frequent freezes followed by automatic reboots, which is extremely annoying. The problematic models include the Galaxy M30s, M31/M31s, Galaxy A50/50s and Galaxy A51, which became one of the best-selling smartphones of 2020.

The problem covering an increasing number of users has been noted for more than 2 months, but Samsung still has not made any official statements and has not explained the cause of the breakdowns. In their posts, many owners of the above smartphones complain that, in response to their requests, the manufacturer advises to visit a service center to replace the motherboard. Moreover, the repair is carried out at the expense of the owner of the device. Replacing the board will cost about 100 euros. Experts say that the motherboard failure is most likely due to a bug in the Android OS code and affects phones with proprietary Exynos 9610 and Exynos 9611 chipsets. Attempts to use typical solutions, such as resetting the device to factory settings, do not fix the problem. If Samsung does not respond to claims from its customers in the near time, the option of filing class actions and lengthy legal proceedings is not excluded.

Owners of the most expensive modifications of the latest Samsung's Galaxy Watch4 LTE and Galaxy Watch4 Classic LTE also faced no less serious problems. After Samsung and Google solemnly announced the transition of Galaxy smartwatches to the unpopular WearOS 3 platform (ex-Android Wear), the joy of this step among the googlefans gave way to disappointment. For example, in the discussion thread notebookchat.com, almost all messages from "happy owners" of Watch4 contain sharp criticism for software bugs that cause the watch to overheat and lose its charge within a few hours if the 4G/LTE modem is activated. The indignation of users of the most expensive Samsung wearable devices is understandable, because they paid a considerable amount precisely for the opportunity to use their gadgets without being tied to a smartphone. In some cases, the Galaxy Wath4 overheats so much that wearers have to remove them from their wrist to avoid scalding. Nothing like this was observed in previous generations of Samsung's TIZEN-powered smartwatches. Every day, the number of complaints about this problem is only growing, as evidenced by posts on the Reddit portal and the Samsung Community forum.

In response to a request from the editors of the notebookcheck.com portal, Samsung replied that "they are collecting statistics to analyze a possible problem." However, the question is, why are such problems in principle possible in top-end devices on WearOS 3, which was presented to us as a "revolution in the world of wearable gadgets"?

Another critical article concerning the big problems due to the transition from the TIZEN platform to WearOS appeared on the phoneswiki.com portal, and a little earlier, the russian tech reviewer Eldar Murtazin also expressed dissatisfaction with this step by Samsung in his Galaxy Watch4 review.

In pursuit of the golden calf in order to satisfy the growing appetite of shareholders by surrendering their positions in the software direction in favor of Google, Samsung Mobile division has clearly forgotten about the interests of ordinary users, who are in fact the true shareholders of the south korean tech giant. If the ranks of supporters of the Samsung brand are thinning, then the shareholders are unlikely to be eager to keep their assets in a problem place, is not it?

В последние дни интернет-ресурсы и форумы, посвящённые мобильным гаджетам, пестрят сообщениями о растущей лавине проблем, связанных с грубыми программными ошибками на Android-устройствах. Операционная система от Google, которую Samsung уже долгие годы навязывает пользователям своих мобильных гаджетов, вызывает всё больше нареканий за плохую работу и утечку персональных данных к злоумышленникам. Например, владельцы смартфонов линеек Galaxy A и Galaxy M жалуются на частые "зависания" с последующей автоматической перезагрузкой, что вызывает крайнее раздражение. В своих постах многие владельцы указанных выше смартфонов сетуют, что в ответ на их обращения производитель советует посетить сервисный центр для замены материнской платы. Причём ремонт производится за счёт владельца устройства. Замена платы обойдётся примерно в 100 евро. Эксперты говорят, что выход материнских плат из строя, скорее всего, происходит из-за ошибки в коде Android OS и затрагивает телефоны с фирменными чипсетами Exynos 9610 и Exynos 9611. Попытки использовать типовые решения, вроде сброса устройства до заводских настроек, не устраняют проблему. Если Samsung в ближайшее время не отреагирует на претензии своих клиентов, не исключается вариант подачи коллективных исков и длительных судебных разбирательств.

С не менее серьёзными проблемами столкнулись также владельцы самых дорогих модификаций новейших смарт-часов Samsung Galaxy Watch4 LTE и Galaxy Watch4 Classic LTE. После того, как Samsung и Google торжественно объявили о переходе смарт-часов Galaxy на непопулярную платформу WearOS 3 (экс-Android Wear), радость по этому поводу среди "гуглофанов" сменилась разочарованием. Например, в дискуссионной ветке notebookchat.com, почти все сообщения от "счастливых владельцев" Watch4 содержат резкую критику за "программные косяки", из-за которых часы сильно перегреваются и теряют заряд в течение нескольких часов в случае активации модема 4G/LTE. Возмущение пользователей самых дорогих носимых устройств Samsung можно понять, ведь они заплатили немалую сумму именно за возможность использовать свои гаджеты без жёсткой привязки к смартфону. В некоторых случаях перегрев Galaxy Wath4 настолько сильный, что владельцам приходится снимать их со своего запястья, чтобы избежать ожога. Очередная разгромная статья, касающаяся больших проблем из-за перехода с платформы TIZEN на WearOS появилась на портале phoneswiki.com, а чуть ранее российский технообозреватель Эльдар Муртазин также выразил недовольство таким шагом Samsung в своём обзоре Galaxy Watch4. 

Погнавшись за золотым тельцом с целью удовлетворения растущих аппетитов акционеров за счёт сдачи своих позиций на софтверном направлении в пользу Google, в Samsung Mobile явно позабыли об интересах обычных пользователей, которые на самом деле являются истинными акционерами южнокорейского техногиганта. Ведь если ряды сторонников марки Samsung будут редеть, то вряд ли акционеры будут гореть желанием держать свои активы в проблемном месте, не правда ли?

The Samsung Galaxy Watch4 presented on the eve disappointed many fans of the South Korean brand even before the start of official sales. As it turned out, the battery life on a single charge was cut in half compared to previous models. Not only that, today Samsung has confirmed that its latest wearable gadgets will not be able to work with Apple's iPhone. Reason: the transition of Galaxy smartwatches to the Wear OS operating platform from Google, despised by most users. Recall that all previous models of Samsung smartwatches worked on the very popular TIZEN operating system.

Despite paid advertising materials in various media, where the "outstanding collaboration" of the American IT monster and the Samsung Mobile division is praised, experts quickly found all the flaws of the new product, which cooled the ardor of many enthusiasts of the Google ecosystem.

Not only does the Galaxy Watch 4 have such serious hardware limitations, but they also require that a version of at least Android 6.0 and a RAM module with a volume of at least 1,5Gb be installed on the connected smartphone. That is, many budget Android smartphones will also not be able to work with the latest Samsung wearables.

Also, the company has stated that device activation is only available after connecting to a smartphone that supports Google Mobile Services (GMS) and has Play Services and the Play Store installed on the device. That is, the possibility of connecting from any other mobile operating platforms is excluded. The owners of Huawei smartphones with pre-installed HarmonyOS are once again on the losing team. At the same time, the most interesting options can only be activated if they are synchronized with Samsung smartphones.

"I already made a pre-order for the Galaxy Watch 4, but today it had to be canceled. It's a pity!" - writes the owner of the iPhone on one of the largest Russian forums. His previous watch, the Samsung Gear S3, works great with Apple's mobile handset, but this is no longer possible with the Galaxy Watch 4.

The thing is that Samsung was not Apple's sworn rival in the software market, so Cupertino met halfway and gave the go-ahead to connect to Samsung products using the TIZEN platform. The situation is reversed when it comes to Google, as the Mountain View IT monster is considered Apple's main enemy in the mobile operating system market. Thus, it is absolutely unrealistic to expect the possibility of connecting all subsequent Galaxy Watch models to the iPhone.

"I can't imagine a Samsung smartwatch without TIZEN OS. The Wear OS version is absolutely unacceptable for me, so Samsung won't get a dime from me anymore," another user complains in the comments under the corresponding YouTube video. Even the head of the Russian technical resource Mobile-Review.com, loyal to the South Korean brand, Eldar Murtazin, does not hide his disappointment when examining the Galaxy Watch 4 in the Moscow office of Samsung.

Nikolay Iznov, a guest expert on our blog, commented on the latest disturbing messages from the camp of adherents of the South Korean brand:

"Many are still blinded and stunned by the advertising campaign of Google and Samsung, which are strenuously pushing their software mutant WearOS 3 into the market, but an epiphany will soon come and this will inevitably affect financial performance. First of all, Samsung will suffer from this, since it not only invested large financial resources in this gamble, but also put its reputation as an independent IT player on the line. Google loses much less, because if successful (which is unlikely), it will extend its spy services to a huge number of devices, and if the project fails, then WearOS will be quietly sent to the graveyard of failed projects. Samsung entered this dubious deal in hopes of becoming the leading semiconductor supplier for Google, which for Koreans seemed much more important than the very small income generated in the wearable gadget market. However, the negative image consequences could be much more serious than top managers of the mobile devices division expected.

The other day I was given some interesting information from the American office of Google. The local managers rub their hands: "Samsung has swallowed the bait and now it will not fall off our hook!" In other words, they are very proud of the fact that they have once again tricked the Koreans. From now on, Samsung is completely dependent on Google's software solutions and becomes a pitiful puppet in the hands of "partners" from Mountain View.

It also suits the political circles in Washington, who are not going to allow anyone to develop alternative operating platforms that can compete on an equal footing with American software products.

But ideally, the best solution for Samsung would be to completely abandon Android and everything related to this OS. Except perhaps the YouTube service, which is the absolute dominant among social video hosting sites. TIZEN has long had apps to seamlessly go to YouTube from TVs, smartphones, smartwatches, and even Family Hub smart refrigerators, and I don't think Google will put any obstacles in the way of it, as it generates a lot of revenue for it. The only question is whether Samsung will decide to take such a step at least in a few years. I think the South Korean government should stimulate this direction by offering additional funding and attracting leading software developers. If such actions had been taken several years ago, then we would not have had such a deplorable situation today, when the onslaught of the legion of Chinese manufacturers of mobile gadgets is actually opposed by only 2 foreign brands (Apple and Samsung)."

Как выяснилось, продолжительность работы от одного заряда аккумулятора сократилось вдвое по сравнению с предыдущими моделями. Мало того, сегодня в Samsung подтвердили, что новейшие носимые гаджеты не смогут работать со смартфонами iPhone от Apple. Причина: переход смарт-часов Galaxy на презираемую большинством пользователей операционную платформу Wear OS от Google. Напомним, что все предыдущие модели смарт-часов Samsung работали на весьма популярной операционной системе TIZEN.

Несмотря на проплаченные рекламные материалы в различных СМИ, где воспевается "выдающаяся коллаборация" американского IT-монстра и подразделения Samsung Mobile, специалисты довольно быстро нашли все изъяны новинки, которые остудили пыл многих энтузиастов экосистемы Google.

Мало того, что в Galaxy Watch 4 имеются столь серьёзные аппаратные ограничения, так они ещё и требуют, чтобы на подключённом смартфоне была установлена версия не ниже Android 6.0 и модуль ОЗУ объёмом не менее 1,5 гигабайт. То есть многие бюджетные Android-модели также не смогут работать с новейшими носимыми устройствами Samsung.

Кроме того, Samsung заявил, что активация устройства доступна только после подключения к смартфону, который поддерживает Google Mobile Services (GMS) и на котором установлены Play Services и Play Store. То есть возможность подключения с любых других мобильных операционных платформ исключена. Владельцы смартфонов Huawei с предустановленной Harmony OS в очередной раз остаются у разбитого корыта. В то же время, наиболее интересные опции могут быть активированы только при условии синхронизации со смартфонами Samsung.

"Я уже сделал предварительный заказ на Galaxy Watch 4, но сегодня его пришлось отменить. Жаль!", - пишет на одном из крупнейших российских форумов владелец iPhone. Его прежние часы Samsung Gear S3 прекрасно работают с мобильной трубкой от Apple, но с Galaxy Watch 4 такое уже невозможно. Всё дело в том, что Samsung не являлся заклятым соперником Apple на софтверном рынке, поэтому в Купертино пошли навстречу и дали "добро" на подключение к продуктам Samsung, использующих платформу TIZEN. Ситуация резко меняется на противоположную, когда дело касается Google, поскольку IT-монстр из Маунтин-Вью считается основным врагом Apple на рынке мобильных операционных систем. Таким образом, ожидать возможности подключения всех последующих моделей Galaxy Watch к iPhone абсолютно нереально.

"Я не представляю себе смарт-часов Samsung без TIZEN OS. Версия на Wear OS для меня абсолютно неприемлема, так что Samsung больше не получит от меня ни копейки", - возмущается другой пользователь в комментариях под соответствующим роликом на YouTube. Даже верный южнокорейской марке глава российского техноресурса Mobile-Review.com Эльдар Муртазин не скрывает своего разочарования, рассматривая Galaxy Watch 4 в московском офисе Samsung.

Приглашённый эксперт нашего блога Николай Изнов так прокомментировал последние тревожные сообщения из стана приверженцев южнокорейской марки:

"Многие пока ещё ослеплены и оглушены рекламной кампанией Google и Samsung, усиленно пропихивающих на рынок своего софтверного мутанта WearOS 3, однако прозрение скоро наступит и это неминуемо отразится на финансовых показателях. Прежде всего от этого пострадает Samsung, так как он не только вложил большие финансовые средства в эту авантюру, но и поставил на кон свою репутацию как независимого IT-игрока. Google теряет гораздо меньше, так как в случае успеха (что маловероятно) он распространит свои шпионские сервисы на огромное количество устройств, а если проект постигнет неудача, то WearOS будет тихо отправлена на кладбище несостоявшихся проектов, коих у Google вагон и маленькая тележка.

Samsung пошёл на эту сомнительную сделку в надежде стать ведущим поставщиком полупроводниковой продукции для Google, что для корейцев показалось гораздо важнее весьма незначительного дохода, получаемого на рынке носимых гаджетов. Однако имиджевые последствия могут оказаться куда более серьёзными, чем рассчитывали топ-менеджеры подразделения мобильных устройств.

На днях мне передали любопытную информацию из американского офиса Google. Тамошние управленцы потирают руки: "Samsung проглотил наживку и теперь уже не сорвётся с нашего крючка!" Иными словами, они очень гордятся тем, что в очередной раз обвели корейцев вокруг пальца. Отныне Samsung полностью зависит от софтверных решений Google и становится жалкой марионеткой в руках "партнёров" из Маунтин-Вью.

Это также вполне устраивает политические круги в Вашингтоне, которые не собираются позволять кому-либо разрабатывать альтернативные операционные платформы, способные конкурировать на равных с американскими софтверными продуктами.

Но в идеале лучшим решением для Samsung был бы полный отказ от Android и всем, что связано с этой ОС. Кроме разве что сервиса YouTube, который является абсолютным доминантом среди социальных видеохостингов. TIZEN давно имеет приложения для беспрепятственного выхода на YouTube с телевизоров, смартфонов, смарт-часов и даже смарт-холодильников серии Family Hub, и я не думаю что Google будет чинить для этого какие-то препятствия, поскольку это приносит ему огромный доход. Вопрос лишь в том, решится ли Samsung на такой шаг хотя бы через несколько лет. Полагаю, правительству Южной Кореи стоило бы простимулировать это направление, предложив дополнительное финансирование и привлечение ведущих разработчиков софта. Если бы такие действия были предприняты несколько лет назад, то мы не имели бы сегодня столь плачевную ситуацию, когда натиску легиона китайских производителей мобильных гаджетов фактически противостоят всего лишь 2 зарубежных брэнда (Apple и Samsung)."
