Информация о том, что китайская Huawei спешит представить складной смартфон с гибким дисплеем на февральской выставке MWC 2018 в Барселоне (Испания), судя по всему, скорректировала планы Samsung относительно презентации собственной линейки флагманских продуктов, которые южнокорейская корпорация хотела бы выделить особо, учитывая двойную юбилейную дату - 50-летие со дня своего основания и 10-летие с момента выхода первого смартфона легендарной линейки Galaxy.
Понимая особую важность события и стремление удержать лидерские позиции на рынке мобильных устройств, руководство Samsung приняло решение провести отдельное ото всех мероприятие Galaxy UNPACKED 2019 в калифорнийском городе  Сан-Франциско (США), где находится одно из основных подразделений техногиганта, а также представительства главных IT-партнёров (и одновременно конкурентов) в лице Google, Apple и т.д.
После скандального происшествия, связанного с кражей технологий производства гибких дисплеев китайским конкурентами (полиция Южной Кореи подозревает в этом компании BOE, Huawei и несколько других), что позволило жуликам из Поднебесной вплотную подобраться к лидерам отрасли, в Samsung решили, что затягивать с представлением новинок уже не имеет смысла.
Профильные СМИ полагают, что помимо юбилейной серии Galaxy S10, на Galaxy UNPACKED 2019 будет представлен и складной смартфон с гибким дисплеем, над которым в Samsung трудились долгие годы, вложив в разработки сотни миллионов долларов. 
В официальном пресс-релизе сообщается, что анонс юбилейных флагманов состоится 20-го февраля (в России уже наступит 21-е), а прямая трансляция мероприятия будет вестись на всеб мир посредством официальных интернет-ресурсов http://news.samsung.com/global, http://samsungmobilepress.com, http://samsung.com/galaxy и http://samsung.com.

Samsung to unpack Galaxy S10 series in San Francisco in mid-Feb

Samsung Electronics will hold the Galaxy S10 Unpacked event in San Francisco in mid-February, according sources on Jan. 9.  
The 10th edition of Galaxy S phones will be unveiled in the city - home to the world’s most innovative tech firms - one week ahead of the Mobile World Congress 2019 that kicks off in Barcelona, Spain, on Feb. 28, sources told The Korea Herald.
Samsung was widely expected to announce the S10 series at MWC 2019 in Barcelona as it did for the predecessor S9 series. 
However, there reportedly has been a discussion about changing the place and timing of the Unpacked event to mark the 10th anniversary of the Galaxy phone this year. 
It is presumed that Samsung could have moved forward the announcement by taking into account Huawei’s possible debut of its first foldable smartphone at MWC. 
Meanwhile, the schedule for the release of Samsung’s first foldable smartphone hasn’t been confirmed, a high-ranking Samsung official said. 
“Because it is the first foldable phone by Samsung, we are thinking more about offering some powerful contents for better user experience that can be earned only from the foldable phone,” the official said. 
Considering that Samsung exclusively showcased a nearly completed prototype of its foldable phone to executives of major clients at the Consumer Electronics Show 2019 in Las Vegas, some in the industry have said its debut may also be imminent. 
According to a Samsung official, the foldable phone - temporarily dubbed “Galaxy F” - would come with a price tag of around 2 million won ($1,788). Just 1 million Galaxy foldable phones will be released into markets starting in Korea and then in the US, China and Europe.

Это должно стать переломным моментом для зашедшего в тупик мирового рынка смартфонов, пишет сегодня бизнес-портал The Investor. 
Cогласно заявлениям Samsung, так называемый «Galaxy F», скорее всего, будет оснащён органическим светодиодным экраном (OLED) «Infinity Flex Display», размер которого в раскрытом виде составляет 7,3 дюйма. В сложенном состоянии размер смартфона уменьшается до 4,58 дюйма.  
Большой внутренний дисплей будет разделён на 3 активные области, которые могут одновременно запускать 3 различных приложения, что облегчает работу в многозадачном режиме. Samsung также анонсировал новый дизайн интерфейса, который будет использоваться при работе со складным дисплеем. 
Вендор планирует выпустить 1 миллион складных телефонов в 1-й половине этого года и рассмотрит возможность увеличения производства, если реакция рынка окажется благоприятной. 
«Samsung ориентируется на потребителей старше 40 лет с учётом их покупательной способности, так как первый складной телефон будет стоить от 1,5 до 2 миллионов южнокорейских вон», - сказал отраслевой источник. 
Samsung не единственный производитель, который в настоящее время разрабатывает складные модели.

Will Samsung’s foldable smartphone be game-changer in 2019?

The year 2019 will witness a revolutionary change in the form factor of smartphones, led by South Korean tech titan Samsung Electronics’ launch of its first foldable display phone that could be a game-changer for the stalled global smartphone market. 
According to announcements by Samsung so far, the so-called “Galaxy F” is likely to feature an organic light-emitting diode screen dubbed “Infinity Flex Display” that measures 7.3 inches diagonally when it’s opened.
When folded in half, the size of the smartphone is reduced to 4.58 inches.  
The unfolded screen will split into three active areas that can run three different applications at once to facilitate multitasking. Samsung also announced the new interface design that will be used with the foldable display. 
Samsung plans to release 1 million foldable phones within the first half of this year, and consider churning out more, if market reaction turns out favorable. 
“Samsung is targeting consumers in their 40s with purchasing power, considering that the first foldable phone would come with a high price tag of between 1.5 million and 2 million won,” an industry source said. 
Samsung is not the only one that is currently developing the foldables.
Earlier than Samsung’s announcement in November, China’s display startup Royole unexpectedly unveiled a 7.8-inch foldable Android smartphone called “FlexPai” with a starting price of $1,318. The company said it will showcase the industry’s first foldable phone at the Consumer Electronics Show 2019 opening on Jan. 8.
Its archrival Apple seems to be brainstorming different ways to make a foldable iPhone, according to a patent that was filed in March and publicly posted by the USTPO in late December. 
The patent image showed Apple seems to be considering using an OLED panel, too. 
The US smartphone maker is presumed to be thinking a device that folds both inwards and outwards in comparison with Samsung’s inwards-folding one, the patent showed.
Chinese phone manufacturers are also joining the new race for foldables.
China’s biggest smartphone vendor Huawei is rumored to unveil an 8-inch foldable display phone at the Mobile World Congress in Spain in late February, although nothing has been confirmed by the company yet. 
ZTE, another Chinese vendor, has filed a patent for a foldable phone, too, which looks similar to Samsung’s. 
Another ZTE patent application showed it is developing a double-sided smartphone with a display that wraps around the device.
It should also be noted that in recent years, Samsung has patented so many devices with flexible displays that it exceeds the number of patent applications from all competitors taken together.

Ввиду особой важности развития направления искусственного интеллекта (AI), в корпорации принято решение сделать Bixby Developer Day (BDD) ежегодным слётом разработчиков программного обеспечения, расширяющего возможности этого AI-ассистента.
На конференцию в Сеул приехали ведущие персоны из американского, европейского и азиатского отделений Samsung, отвечающих за развитие искусственного интеллекта, чтобы познакомить местных разработчиков с принципами построения архитектуры AI Bixby и создания "капсул" (программных блоков), призванных создавать новые сервисы и улучшать уже имеющиеся.
Основной задачей в настоящее время создатели Bixby считают улучшение системы распознавания речи, чтобы отталкиваясь от этого начать резко наращивать потенциал интеллектуального помощника.
Ещё в ходе недавнего ежегодного мероприятия SDC18 (Samsung Developer Conference 2018), прошедшего 7-8 ноября в Сан-Франциско, топ-менеджеры Samsung сообщили, что в скором времени Bixby заговорит на нескольких наиболее распространённых языках. Помимо уже имеющихся американского английского, корейского и китайского, в ближайшие месяцы добавятся французский, немецкий, британский английский, испанский и итальянский. О дате начала поддержки русского языка пока ничего неизвестно.
Что касается дальнейших перспектив, то вице-президент подразделения Samsung IT & Mobile Communications Division Ли Джи-су сказал следующее: «Возможности распознавания речи Bixby будут продолжать улучшаться, поскольку мы привлекаем больше сторонних разработчиков, которые используют тот же инструмент, что и внутренние разработчики.

Bixby Developer Day in Seoul (20/11/2018)

Samsung’s Bixby Developer Day is underway in South Korea. Samsung’s much-awaited foldable smartphone will ship with Bixby 3.0, according to a key executive. The company had confirmed this Bixby-focused developer event for South Korea last month with keynote speeches from several important executives.
The event had Samsung’s Vice President Eui-Suk Chung scheduled to speak as well. He leads the research and development of software and Bixby at Samsung’s mobile business. He’s the one responsible for Bixby’s development.
The Samsung Developer Conference 2018 was where Samsung unveiled much of what it’s showcasing today. The Bixby Developer Studio and the Bixby Marketplace being the most noteworthy announcements. Furthermore, Samsung is now allowing third-party developers to create features for its virtual assistant. It will distribute them through the marketplace.
Eui-Suk Chung also mentioned that Samsung is preparing to ship the next iteration of Bixby with the foldable smartphone. “The new Bixby currently in the pipeline will be featured in the foldable smartphone,” adding that the company has not yet decided if it will be branded as Bixby 3.0. He didn’t provide a lot of details about the next generation of Bixby, only that it will be an upgraded platform with more capabilities. Samsung rolled out Bixby 2.0 with the Galaxy Note 9 earlier this year.
Since the launch of Bixby, Samsung has been striving to make its AI platform more intelligent, integrated, and useful to its customers across product categories. Continuing its efforts, the company hosted the first Bixby Developer Day in Seoul to attract more third-party developers to expand the reach and capabilities of its AI platform.
Samsung showcased the new Bixby Developer Studio and offered training sessions for the same at the event, which had nearly 800 local developers in attendance. The Bixby Developer Studio was first unveiled at the Samsung Developer Conference in San Francisco earlier this month. It is currently available for developers in the US, Korea, and China.
Samsung claimed at the forum that it has more third-party developers on its AI platform than Google. The company said it is working to improve the accuracy of Bixby’s speech recognition by providing better development tools for third-party developers around the world. The Korean tech giant also reiterated support for more languages on Bixby in the coming months.
“Bixby’s speech recognition capabilities will continue improving as we draw more outside developers who are using the same tool as the inside developers,” said Lee Ji-soo, Vice President, AI, Samsung IT & Mobile Communications Division, at the event. He further said, “Samsung is focusing on increasing the variety of objects that can have interactions with humans through the voice assistant, whether it be a mobile device, TV, refrigerator or an air conditioner.”

Samsung to offer glimpse of foldable smartphone in Seoul

Tech giant Samsung Electronics said on Nov. 14 that it plans to hold a developer conference in Seoul on Nov. 20, where it will showcase its foldable phone that was unveiled in the US earlier this month.
The upcoming conference comes after the previous developer event in San Francisco on Nov. 7-8 where the tech behemoth took the wraps off its first foldable smartphone.
“From this year, the Samsung Developer Day conference in Korea will take place every year to help developers here get a better understanding of the firm’s latest artificial intelligence solutions and technologies,” said a Samsung spokesperson, adding that Korean developers will be able to have a chance to see the user interface of the foldable smartphone at the domestic event.
Koh Dong-jin, mobile chief of the company, who delivered a keynote speech at the US event, will likely skip the domestic one. On behalf of the CEO, Jeong Eui-seok, chief of an AI unit under the mobile division, is expected to introduce some specifications of the foldable smartphone.
During the US conference, Koh told reporters that Samsung would roll out the foldable smartphone in the first half next year and the first production volume will be at least 1 million.
Other speakers include Yi Ji-soo, vice president of Samsung’s AI strategy group; Adam Cheyer, CTO of Samsung-owned AI firm Viv Labs; and Larry Heck, chief of an AI center under the company’s US R&D organization Samsung Research America.
Chon Kil-nam, emeritus professor at KAIST, a top-tier tech university in Korea, will also take the stage. He is often referred to as “the father of Korea’s internet industry,” for his contributions to the adoption of the internet network in 1982. 
Subjects like conversational services, natural language processing, and investment trends for AI startups will be discussed at the conference, according to the firm.

Samsung Electronics to release first foldable smartphone in March: sources

Samsung Electronics Co. plans to launch its first foldable smartphone in March, along with a fifth-generation (5G) network-powered Galaxy S10, industry sources said Monday.
According to the sources, the South Korean tech giant plans to unveil the flagship Galaxy S10 smartphone in February, followed by the presumed foldable Galaxy F and another edition of the Galaxy S10 that runs on the 5G network in March.
The outlook came after Samsung Electronics President Koh Dong-jin, who heads the mobile business, said last week that the company will release a foldable smartphone within the first half of 2019. Koh said the shipment volume of the foldable smartphone will be at least 1 million.
Industry watchers said Samsung is expected to showcase the upcoming foldable smartphone in the Mobile World Congress in February, ahead of the official launch in the following month.
The much-awaited foldable smartphone, however, is not expected to support the 5G network.
While the price of the foldable smartphone has not been decided, industry watchers said it may cost around 2 million won (US$1,770). The steep price is expected to limit sales.
Samsung said the upcoming foldable smartphone will fold inward, and will sport a 7.4-inch screen when unfolded and have a 4.6-inch display like a regular smartphone when folded.

Теперь же Samsung превращает его в масштабируемую интеллектуальную платформу для поддержки разнообразных продуктов и сервисов. На SDC 2018 Samsung представил новые разработки, с которыми помощник станет ещё более доступным, персонализированным и интеллектуальным.
Samsung представляет Bixby Developer Studio. Этот набор интуитивно понятных инструментов позволяет внедрять искусственный интеллект в новые устройства и сервисы. Разработчики смогут создавать "капсулы" – функции для использования на платформе Bixby – и предлагать их пользователям в магазине Bixby Marketplace. Капсулы можно будет легко адаптировать для различных типов устройств (смартфонов, телевизоров, бытовой техники и других продуктов экосистемы Samsung).

To make it easier for developers to scale services powered by Bixby, Samsung is introducing the Bixby Developer Studio. The collection of tools provides an intuitive way for developers and partners to infuse intelligence into more services and devices. Developers will be able to easily create Bixby Capsules – features or services created for Bixby – and make them easily accessible to consumers in the Bixby Marketplace. В этом году интерес к этому двухдневному мероприятию особый: все ждали появления первой информации о складном смартфоне с предполагаемым названием Galaxy F (или "Winner", согласно некоторым данным).
Большая часть полуторочасовой презентации была посвящена новейшим разработкам Samsung в области создания интеллектуального голосового помощника Bixby и дальнейшего развития собственной экосистемы "интернета вещей" (IoT). И это было не менее увлекательным, чем показ прототипа "Winner" в финальной части.

Интерфейс для разработчиков Bixby некоторые IT-специалисты уже сейчас называют "шедевральным", настолько он хорош визуально и логически выверен.

Разумеется, производитель постарался скрыть всякие нюансы дизайна будущего устройства с помощью накладного фальш-корпуса прямоугольной формы, продемонстрировав лишь уникальные возможности сгибающегося дисплея. Но даже этого было достаточно, чтобы понять, насколько "Winner" отличатся от "первого в мире" китайского уродца, показанного несколькими днями ранее.
Как и предполагалось, представители Samsung сообщили, что работали над программным обеспечением для "Winner" в тесном сотрудничестве с Google. В частности, были кратко продемонстрированы возможности интерфейса, поддерживающего одновременное раскрытие нескольких активных окон на большом экране. Правда, для специалистов осталось неясным, что мешало Samsung реализовать то же самое на базе собственной операционной платформы TIZEN, которая уже установлена на всех других IoT-устройствах ведущего южнокорейского брэнда. Earlier this year, Samsung introduced the new Bixby – a more conversational, more personal and more useful intelligent assistant. Bixby keeps the dialogue moving forward to get things done. It gets to know you and learns from you, to personalize how it helps you. Bixby serves as your personal assistant, making it quick and easy to complete a variety of tasks from start to finish through a growing number of third-party partners. If you say, “Hi, Bixby, give me a restaurant recommendation,” Bixby remembers that you like a certain cuisine, like Italian, and brings those recommendations to the top of the list. Ask Bixby to buy tickets to a concert, and it will ask you follow up questions to find the best seats for you, making the process quicker and easier.*
Now Samsung is bringing that experience to even more devices and services. To evolve Bixby into Samsung’s intelligence platform, we have laid the groundwork to build a scalable AI platform, making it simpler and easier for developers to create user experiences powered by Bixby.
At Samsung Developer Conference 2018, we’re announcing that we’re opening Bixby Developer Studio, an Integrated Development Environment (IDE), to developers. It offers access to the same development tools Samsung’s internal developers use to create Bixby Capsules, which is what developers build to add features to Bixby. It’s all part of Samsung’s unique approach to AI, with the goal of building a scalable, open AI platform where developers and service providers can access tools to bring Bixby to more people and devices around the world.

At last year’s Samsung Developer Conference, I spoke about connected thinking, and touched on some of the incredible experiences that become possible when we unify connections across devices. Our announcement of SmartThings marked a big step toward creating that seamlessly connected future.
So much has happened since then. During the past year, game-changing technologies like 5G, which were once experimental, have become commercially available; breakthrough AI capabilities that once seemed impossible are now within reach; and SmartThings has evolved into the world’s most comprehensive open IoT platform.
Which brings us to where we stand today—at the cusp of a new era of discovery and invention. A time in which intelligent services connect people to the tools they need and the experiences they desire; a time of incredible economic opportunity, built on new insights about how the world works and what customers want; and a time in which the ubiquity of an IoT platform like SmartThings propels us beyond the era of connected thinking and into the era of connected living.

После долгих раздумий в Samsung наконец-то окончательно определились с форм-фактором своего потенциального технологического хита десятилетия - складного смартфона с гибким OLED-дисплеем Galaxy F (заводские маркировки SM-F900U, SM-F900F и SM-F900N для Северной Америки, Европы и Азии соответственно).
Затянувшаяся разработка стоила южнокорейскому электронному гиганту номинального лидерства в гонке за право называться первым вендором, представившем такое устройство. Однако тот странный мутант, который был явлен почтеннейшей публике никому неизвестной китайской конторой под названием Rouyu Technology, не даёт никаких поводов беспокоиться лидеру мобильного рынка.
Сегодня в официальных блогах Samsung на соцплатформах Facebook и twitter появилось стилизованное изображение изогнутого пополам дисплея в виде фирменного логотипа. Это прямой намёк на то, что анонс долгожданного планшетофона-трнсформера не за горами. Одновременно стало известно о регистрации южнокорейским производителем торговых марок Infinity-Flex, Infinity-U и Infinity-О, что указывает на появление в обозримой перспективе различных типов устройств с гибкими дисплеями.
Согласно отраслевым утечкам, производителем высокопрецизионного шарнирного механизма, установленного в месте изгиба экрана, стала южнокорейская компания-субподрядчик KH Vatec.
Информаторы сообщают, что гарантированное количество циклов раскрытия/закрытия устройства составляет не менее 200.000. К тому же слишком часто раскрывать такой коммуникатор не потребуется, поскольку вендор установит на нём второй внешний 3,5-дюймовый дисплей, чего достаточно для получения всей основной информации, поступающей в течение дня абоненту (MMS, SMS, оповещения из соцсетей, погода и т.д.). Основной же дисплей будет складываться вовнутрь, что защитит его от механических повреждений (в китайском же "первом в мире" гнущемся "полене" Royole FlexPai всё сделано ровно наоборот). 
В раскрытом состоянии Samsung Galaxy F фактически приобретёт размеры небольшого планшета с диагональю 7,29 дюйма, на котором гораздо комфортнее просматривать видеоконтент и печатать тексты.
Конечно, наличие 2-х дисплеев потребует более мощного источника питания, который наверняка займёт внушительный объём. Хотя не исключено, что Samsung, работавший над софтом вместе с Google, удалось хотя бы отчасти решить эту проблему с помощью оптимизации ПО на базе Android 9 Pie (версия прошивки для США - F900USQU0ARJ5).
Пробный международный тираж сгибаемой модели составит от 500.000 до 1.000.000 экземпляров. В зависимости от уровня спроса Samsung решит, насколько сильно нужно будет загружать производственные линии. Поначалу ежемесячный объём выпуска составит 100.000 аппаратов.
Приглашённый эксперт блога Samsung Word Николай Изнов считает, что отказ Samsung от использования в Galaxy F собственной операционной системы TIZEN породит в дальнейшем больше проблем, чем выгод.  
"У Samsung была уникальная возможность начать новую эру в мире мобильных гаджетов с чистого листа: новый форм-фактор, новая программная платформа, новый интерфейс. Это могло бы привлечь немалое число разработчиков приложений, которым жутко надоела американская дуополия Android-iOS, загнавшая отрасль в стогнацию. TIZEN гораздо более экономична, универсальна и эффективна. К тому же это позволило бы Samsung, наконец, оторваться от патологической Google-зависимости и начать свой путь в мире мобильного ПО. Мы получили бы обострение рыночной конкуренции и больше интересных программно-аппаратных решений. Но вместо этого нас опять затягивают в зелёное болото "гуглоробота", что не даёт надежд на серьёзное оживление в этом сегменте.
Я полагаю, что роковым фактором стал прошлогодний арест фактического главы Samsung Ли Джей-ёна и его почти 12-месячное тюремное заключение по надуманным обвинениям в "коррупционных связях" с представителями бывшей президентской администрации Пак Кын-хи (причём нападки со стороны леваков на руководство Samsung продолжаются до сих пор, равно как и судебные разбирательства -ред.). Корпорация, лишившаяся главного управленца и нескольких топ-менеджеров, которые также были либо посажены, либо вынуждены уйти в отставку, потеряла ориентиры. Оставшиеся у руля администраторы побоялись взять на себя ответственность и приняли опрометчивое решение "от греха подальше" заморозить развитие мобильной TIZEN, вернувшись в "китайское Android-стадо", где пастухом является Google. Наблюдатели указывают, что свёртывание "плана B" (то есть перехода мобильного подразделения на использование TIZEN OS - ред.) произошло именно в этот критический период, хотя ещё в мае 2017-го на конференции TDC 2017 говорилось прямо противоположное и топ-менеджеры обещали расширение географии продаж TIZEN-смартфонов.
Кто именно и каким образом убеждал совет директоров Samsung остаться рабом Android, нам, естественно, не расскажут. Одно ясно: Samsung стремительно упускает из рук свои козырные карты (имеется ввиду мобильный бизнес -ред.), которые могли бы дать ему шанс на лучшее будущее перед лицом тотального китайского наступления. Боюсь, что второго такого шанса уже не будет.
Некоторые южнокорейские СМИ пишут, что выход на рынок гибких Android-смартфонов вряд ли скажется на положении в отрасли существенным образом. Во-первых, из-за их высокой стоимости, а во-вторых, из-за наличия всё той же надоевшей, тяжёлой и небезопасной ОС от Google.
Решится ли теперь вышедший из заключения наследник империи Samsung Ли Джей-ён перезапустить "план B" - большой вопрос. Скорее всего, на закулисных переговорах Google настоял на запрете использования TIZEN в обмен на содействие в разработке адаптированной версии Android под новый форм-фактор  Galaxy F. По крайней мере так полагают специалисты, работающие в IT-сфере. Иначе объяснить внезапное абортирование "плана B" никак нельзя. Главный вопрос лишь в том, имеет ли этот запрет какие-то временные рамки и до какой даты оним могут действовать.
Некоторые могут сказать, что всякой конспирологии можно найти гораздо более простые объяснения, например, что в Samsung просто пожалели денег на развитие собственной мобильной экосистемы. Если это так, то руководство техногиганта можно считать глупцами. Но я в этом сомневаюсь. Тем более, что сведения о том, как Google научился искусно выкручивать руки своим партнёрам, уже неоднократно проникали в специализированные издания, недоступные простому обывателю.", - отметил эксперт.
Первые сведения о будущем Galaxy F должны обнародовать на конференции разработчиков SDC 2018 в Сан-Франциско, прямую трансляцию об открытии которой мы будем вести 7 ноября.

Samsung’s foldable smartphone to be double-sided

Samsung Electronics has reportedly decided the display specifications of the upcoming foldable smartphone, tentatively named Galaxy F.
The tech giant’s first foldable smartphone will have two display panels, a 7.29-inch main display and a 4.58-inch sub-display, according to local news outlet The Bell on Nov. 2. 
The device, when unfolded, will serve as a tablet PC with the main display while it becomes a smartphone when folded.
Samsung Display is said to have started producing the displays and the initial production volume will be 100,000 per month. Since the 2-in-1 device is aimed at testing the market response, the smartphone maker will likely roll out 500,000 to 1 million units of the gadget this year.
Until July, the tech giant had not decided on whether to opt for a single screen or a double-screen design. The extra display offers a better user experience as it allows the user to utilize most smartphone functions without unfolding the phone, but it makes the device thicker and more expensive. The dual displays also make the battery drain faster. The main screen will rely on a hinge to be bent in half
Samsung is expected to unveil some details of its foldable smartphone at its annual developer conference (SDC 2018) on Nov. 7-8 in San Francisco. The official release schedule of the phone has not been announced yet.
Other smartphone makers, including LG Electronics, and Huawei, are also preparing to jump on the bandwagon. Meanwhile, California-based Royole showcased in Beijing on Nov. 1 what it claims will be the first commercially available foldable smartphone - Royole FlexPai - that will reportedly be available in December. 
LG is rumored to introduce the prototype of its own foldable phone during the CES trade show in January while the Chinese company is forecast to take the wraps off its own device by the end of this year.
Some market analysts forecast that the new type of smartphones could spice up the slowing smartphone market, but the effect would be limited.
“The lukewarm smartphone sales of smartphones in the global market will likely continue even after mobile devices with the new form factor hit the market,” said Eo Kyu-jin, an analyst at Ebest Investment & Securities.
