The Samsung Galaxy Watch Active2 will get the features of the latest Galaxy Watch 3 wearable flagships through a software upgrade to TIZEN 5.5

As expected, following the launch of the flagship Galaxy Watch 3 series of wearables, most of the premium features will now be available to owners of last year's Galaxy Watch Active2, which are very close in specifications.
According to the analysis of the program code prepared for the update of the operating system to the TIZEN 5.5 version, Samsung is preparing for the international launch such long-awaited functions as blood pressure monitoring, ECG, fall detection in case of loss of consciousness or heart attack, sending out an SOS alarm message with displaying the exact coordinates of the emergency by pre-defined subscriber numbers, expanding the capabilities of the intelligent voice assistant Bixby (for certain countries) and some others.
Some of the listed functions will also become available to owners of earlier Samsung smartwatches running on TIZEN OS.
Of course, along with the upgrade, another patch will be released to improve security and optimize the operation of the hardware-software platform.

The TIZEN-powered Samsung TV Receives Accreditation From Royal National Institute of Blind People (RNIB) in the UK

Samsung continues to expand its accessibility features for more inclusivity and ease-of-use

Samsung Electronics today announced that the company has received ‘Tried and Tested Accreditation’ for its 2020 Smart TVs from the United Kingdom’s Royal National Institute of Blind People (RNIB) which is the first time this accreditation has been given in the TV industry.
RNIB awards its “Tried and Tested” accreditation to products, websites, apps or services which meet RNIB criteria for accessibility for consumers with impaired vision. This distinction enables the users to make easier purchase decisions and also underscores Samsung’s commitment to improving accessibility features on its TVs.
Samsung has worked with RNIB since 2013 to ensure that Samsung products are suited with the proper features to offer accessibility for all consumers.
Since 2014, Samsung has focused on enhancing accessibility features for users who are visually impaired, providing features such as ‘Voice Guide’ that enables the TV to read aloud program information and ‘High Contrast’ mode that displays graphic information with opaque black backgrounds and white font for enhanced visibility. In recognition of these features, RNIB presented its ‘Inclusive Society Award’ to Samsung Electronics in 2016.
Since then, Samsung Electronics has continued to improve and expand the accessibility features on its TVs to better achieve digital inclusivity for deaf and hearing impaired people as well as blind and partially sighted people. Features include:

* With upgraded Voice Guide feature, users can listen to key information on programs as well as instructions for the remote control and accessibility features. Users also can adjust the pitch and speed of the Voice Guide to suit their preferences.
* The Digital Magnifier which enhances and expands text and images on large screens while mirroring the Samsung Galaxy smartphone to a TV.(1)
* The Focus Enlarge feature magnifies specific fonts related to TV control, volume and menus.
* Automatic recognition and enlargement of the sign language area for the hearing-impaired as well as ability to adjust and move the subtitle positions.

“With a growing variety of content and features, people are now having more fun with their smart TVs,” said Kangwook Chun, Executive Vice President of Visual Display Business at Samsung Electronics. “Samsung is fully committed to providing comprehensive accessibility features on its TVs so that every user can enjoy their favorite content much more easily,” he added.
David Clarke, Director of Services at RNIB, said, “RNIB is delighted to award our Tried and Tested certification to Samsung in recognition of the accessibility features within their TV. RNIB and Samsung have worked together since 2013, and each year the accessibility features on their televisions have been improved and expanded.”

The future owners of such devices are promised the availability of an updated 8-segment sensor from the American company Texas Instruments, which will provide not only a correct calculation of the heart rate, but also allow monitoring blood pressure, making an electrocardiogram, and also determining the moment of a sudden fall. In the event of a threat to health (for example, loss of consciousness or heart attack), the watch will automatically send an SOS signal to the rescue service with the exact coordinates of the location. A gesture control function will also be added. As usual, this watch will receive IP68 protection against ingress of water and dust. In terms of hardware upgrade, we can note the increase in RAM by 25% (1Gb) and permanent memory by 50% (8Gb) compared to the previous model Galaxy Watch.   
The latest version of TIZEN OS 5.5 with improved optimization and support for new options will be used as a software platform.
Of course, there will also be a "male" version of a larger size (45 mm) with various hardware stuffing on sale (models with LTE/4G support have been prepared for certain markets). In total, 9 modifications of the Galaxy Watch 3 are expected to appear in various colors and hardware solutions, including a deluxe version in a titanium case.

Electrocardiogram Monitoring Cleared for Galaxy Watch Active2 by South Korea’s Ministry of Food and Drug Safety

Electrocardiogram monitoring joins blood pressure measurement in receiving clearance, making the Galaxy Watch Active2 Samsung’s most informed and convenient health tracker yet

Samsung Electronics announced today that the Electrocardiogram (ECG) function of the Samsung Health Monitor app has been cleared by South Korea’s Ministry of Food and Drug Safety (MFDS). The ECG feature uses advanced sensor technology on the Galaxy Watch Active2 (1), and will enable users to measure and analyze their heart rhythm for irregularities indicating Atrial Fibrillation (AFib). (2)

AFib is the most common abnormal heart rhythm, affecting an estimated 33.5 million people worldwide, with 5 million new patients diagnosed annually.(3) It can significantly increase the risk of complications, including blood clots, heart failure and stroke. Every year, over 16 million people will develop a stroke, of which AFib and high blood pressure (hypertension), are known to be the leading causes.(4)

The Samsung Health Monitor app also recently received MFDS clearance for blood pressure (BP) measurement, meaning users will be able to conveniently measure both ECG and BP, giving them a better picture of their overall health. Together, the ground-breaking ECG and BP technology will help users manage and improve their health by providing on-demand measurements.

The ECG function works by analyzing the heart’s electrical activity via an ECG sensor on the Galaxy Watch Active2. Simply open the Samsung Health Monitor app when you are seated comfortably, and ensure the watch is fitted firmly to your wrist. Next, rest your forearm on a flat surface and lightly place a fingertip from the opposite hand on the top button on the Galaxy Watch Active2 for 30 seconds. The app will then measure your heart rate and rhythm, which will be classified as either a Sinus Rhythm (a normal, regular heartbeat) or AFib (when the heart beats irregularly).(5)

This recording will provide insight into a user’s health, enabling them to share results with their doctor to help make more informed decisions and live healthier life, especially when combined with the BP measurement.

The Samsung Health Monitor app6 will be available on the Galaxy Watch Active2 within the third quarter and will progressively expand to upcoming Galaxy Watch devices.

In designing the Galaxy S20’s haptic feedback, Samsung prioritized two things: a satisfying sensation and applying haptic feedback to relevant features and actions. One of the areas you will feel the sensations is the camera.

Fine-tuned vibrations complement the S20’s powerful camera when pressing to take a picture, zooming in and out, and adjusting the Pro mode controls, such as the shutter speed and aperture. That same satisfying haptic sensation has been applied to many other features throughout the Galaxy S20.

When quickly flipping through the Contact list to search for “Mom,” for example, a vertical index appears on the right side. When scrolling through the index, you will get enhanced haptic feedback that signifies moving from one letter to the next in the index. The haptic feedback also varies by input, providing distinct vibrations for regular keys, feature keys, and delete keys. There are also noticeable differences in feedback when holding down the backspace button to delete characters and when moving the cursor where you will find concise, tactile sensations.

Sound for a New Experience

A picture may be worth a thousand words, but songs and sounds can form lasting memories. Samsung took that lesson to heart by designing a satisfying auditory experience for the Galaxy S20. This year’s Over the Horizon song, for example, was built around the theme of ‘Digital Wellbeing’.
