The report further revealed that the global 5G smartphone shipments surged past 24 million units in Q1 2020 and the demand from China was higher than expected. “Demand for 5G smartphones was strong, particularly in China, despite the emergence of the Covid-19 epidemic. China is the leader in demand for 5G smartphones, but demand is also growing South Korea, the US, and Europe,” added the report. Woody Oh, Director at Strategy Analytics said, “Huawei is number two. Nearly all of Huawei’s 5G smartphones were shipped in China, where it is the smartphone market leader. The top 5G smartphone from Huawei is the Mate 30, Honor V30 Pro, and Mate 30 Pro.” Another Chinese smartphone maker Vivo is at number three. For PCs, DRAM demand also remained steady on the back of the increase in virtual meetings. Samsung Display posted 6.59 trillion won in sales, up 7.7 percent from a year earlier, but swung to a 290 billion won deficit. Samsung pledged to stick to its investment plan throughout the year, while closely managing risks brought by the COVID-19 impact. Samsung Announced as Leader in Patents Granted for 5G by IPlytics Samsung Electronics has received the maximum number of 5G patents during 2019 which goes beyond smartphones and chipsets and covers network infrastructure equipment for connectivity. The company holds 1,728 granted patents and leads the pack. The study, was conducted by research firm IPLytics and the Technical University of Berlin in January, revealed that Samsung Electronics had the most 5G patents granted by at least one of the patent offices in Europe, the US or the Patent Cooperation Treaty. The company has 1,728 granted patents following by Nokia with 1,584, LG with 1,415 and Huawei with 1,274 patents in the overall 5G spectrum. All these patents are enforceable, which means that the companies have exclusive rights on these patents, which means they can claim legitimate license fees for their use. “These figures on 5G patents are the result of our continued and unrelenting commitment to 5G innovation. Based on our leadership in 5G patents, we will continue to advance 5G and spearhead the development of next generation telecommunication technologies that will transform our daily lives in future,” says Sunghyun Choi, Senior Vice President and head of Advanced Communications Research Center at Samsung Research. In its executive summary, the IPLytics research paper says the fourth industrial revolution will rely on a stable, real-time communication allowing the constant exchange of massive amounts for data. The next telecommunication generation 5G standard is an important step to meet these new requirements of connectivity for future applications. And this is where patents become mission critical. There thousands standard essential patents in the field of telecommunications and when the 5G network starts expanding, companies would seek to license any of these essential patents under the fair, reasonable and non-discriminatory terms - in other words, by paying licensing fees. “The past few years have shown that 3G and 4G patent holders have controlled how mobile technologies are used in the smartphone industry and owners of 5G essential patents will likely become technology and market leaders, thus enabling 5G connectivity in various markets.” The research suggests that 5G technology is amongst the most patented in history with a total of 95,526 declarations spread across 21,571 unique patent families that go way beyond just 5G-enabled smartphones and chips. Patent offices have granted less than half of these patent families that were filed between 2017 and 2019. In recent times, Samsung has worked with cellular network operators in Japan, South Korea, the United States and New Zealand among others to roll out 5G networks. The company also recently partnered with Xilinx to power up its 5G network equipment.

Hand wash is considered effective only when it lasts for full 20 seconds, according to healthcare professionals. To make things easy, a small group of designers and developers from Samsung Research Institute-Bangalore, or SRI-B’s UX and wearable teams, worked round-the-clock over the last two weeks to come up with a solution that helps you keep healthy and safe. Accordingly, SRI-B employees – mostly working remotely from their homes – built the ‘Hand Wash’ app – a wearable app for Galaxy Watch that prompts users to clean their hands, a key preventive attribute to stay safe. The ‘Hand Wash’ app on Galaxy Watch helps users maintain hand hygiene by periodically reminding them about it and ensuring each wash is thorough for the duration of 20 seconds in line with WHO recommended best practices. The app comes with preset reminders which users can customize further based on their needs and schedule. Also, each time the user initiates the wash sequence, the ‘Hand Wash’ app tracks the time and provides users with haptic feedback after 25 seconds of wash cycle. Five seconds are for turning on the tap and applying soap, while 20 seconds are for actual hand wash. The ‘Hand Wash’ app also notifies users if they miss any of scheduled pit stops to the wash basin! The ‘Hand Wash’ app allows users to track their daily wash trends to build healthy habit over a period. The ‘Hand Wash’ app is further complimented by elegant watch face, which allows users to intuitively track their daily wash routine. Moreover, the watch face also shows the elapsed time since last wash to give users a sense of alertness about their hygiene in real time.
