Samsung Biologics bags CMO deals worth W468b

Samsung Biologics has bagged two contract manufacturing deals worth 468 billion won ($378 million) combined, according to its regulatory filing on May 22. 
The total value of the latest deals is equal to two-thirds of the company’s revenue for last year at 701 billion won. 
According to the biopharmaceutical unit of Samsung, it inked a contract manufacturing deal worth 284 billion won with global biopharma GlaxoSmithKline to manufacture the latter’s lupus treatment Benlysta. Benlysta is anticipated to be launched commercially in 2022.
“Today’s agreement with Samsung Biologics complements and reinforces our existing world-class pharmaceutical manufacturing capability and will help ensure we can continue to deliver the transformative medicines that patients need,” said Regis Simard, president of GSK’s Pharmaceuticals Supply Chain. 
The GSK deal had previously been notified on April 22, at which time the deal had only been worth $39.7 million. The finalized deal, which increased in value by $191 million, is effective until the end of 2027.
The other deal, with an unspecified US-based pharma firm, worth 184 billion won, will have Samsung Biologics manufacture the partner’s biologics drug at its plant 3 - the biggest and the most up-to-date biologics manufacturing facility under Samsung.
The deal could grow to $222 million in the long term, according to Samsung Biologics. Under mutual agreement, the identity of this partner will be kept confidential until Dec. 31, 2023.

Samsung Bioepis posts sales of US$545.2 mln in Europe in 2018

South Korean pharmaceutical firm Samsung Bioepis Co. saw its accumulated sales in the European market hit US$545.2 million last year, data showed Wednesday.
Sales of three biosimilar products - Benepali, Flixabi and Imradli - surged 44 percent on-year in 2018, according to the data provided by Biogen Inc., which is in charge of Samsung Bioepis' sales in Europe.
By product, sales of Benepali increased 31 percent on-year to $485.2 million last year. Flixabi's sales grew around fourfold over the cited period to $43.2 million. Imraldi, which was first launched in October, posted sales of $16.7 million in just 70 days.
Samsung's Benepali is a biosimilar referencing Enbrel developed by U.S.-based Amgen Inc. and is used for the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis and psoriatic arthritis.
Flixabi, based on Janssen's Remicade, is used for the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis, Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis.
Imraldi - a copy of the autoimmune disease drug Humira - was first commercialized in Britain, France, Germany, Spain and Italy. It can be used for the treatment of such diseases as rheumatoid arthritis, psoriasis, ulcerative colitis and uveitis.
Samsung Bioepis was established in 2012 in a joint venture between Samsung BioLogics Co. and Biogen.

Samsung Bioepis Teams up with Japan’s Takeda to Develop Novel Biotech Drugs

Samsung Bioepis and Japan's Takeda Pharmaceutical will co-fund and collaboratively develop innovative therapies rather than transferring new candidate materials or technologies.

Samsung Bioepis Co., a biopharmaceutical affiliate of Samsung, announced on August 21 it has entered into a strategic collaboration agreement with Japan's Takeda Pharmaceutical Co., the largest pharmaceutical company in Asia, to jointly develop novel biologic drugs.
The latest agreement is to create a synergy between Samsung Bioepis’ biologics development platform and technologies and Takeda’s extensive knowledge and expertise in drug development. Under the agreement, the two companies will collaboratively work on the whole process of new material searching, clinical trial, licensing and commercialization.
In particular, the two companies will co-fund and collaboratively develop innovative therapies rather than transferring new candidate materials or technologies. Samsung Bioepis said, “We have decided to participate in the development of biologic medicines beyond biosimilars in order to provide effective biologic drugs.”
The deal marks a milestone for the biopharma development unit of Samsung Group, launched as part of the conglomerate’s future businesses initiated seven years ago by its currently bedridden Chairman Lee Kun-hee in May 2010. It was also the achievement in five years after Samsung Bioepis was founded in 2012 with an aim of biologics research and development and commercialization.
The two companies will immediately begin working on the program’s first therapeutic candidate, TAK-671, which is intended to treat severe acute pancreatitis, and expand to other novel biologic treatments in the future. TAK-671 is a candidate material developed by Takeda Pharmaceutical. Samsung Bioepis said the two companies thought that it is the right time to jointly carry out clinical trials with the new candidate material since the clinical trials haven’t started yet. In addition, there is a high demand for acute pancreatitis because there are no treatments for the disease yet and Takeda Pharmaceutical has expertise in gastrointestinal internal medicines.
Accordingly, Samsung Bioepis will take part in the preclinical studies on TAK-671 and jointly carry out the Phase I clinical trial with Takeda Pharmaceutical next year. In general, pharmaceutical companies search and develop a candidate material and conduct preclinical studies, including animal testing, and carry out Phase I to III clinical trials in order to develop novel drugs. Takeda Pharmaceutical, which is Asia’s biggest multinational pharmaceutical company founded in 1781, posted US$16.1 billion (18.38 trillion won) in sales last year.
Until now, some have pointed out that Samsung Bioepis tends to focus on current profits rather than the future by developing biosimilars.
