Samsung Electronics Launches the TIZEN-powered Robot Cleaner

Samsung Electronics has released an AI robot vacuum cleaner with stronger object recognition and operating performance based on artificial intelligence (AI) technology.

The Bespoke Jetbot AI is a smart robot vacuum cleaner that can empty its dust can on its own after cleaning. It is the world's first robot cleaner loaded with Intel’s AI solution (Intel Movidius), which allows the robot cleaner to think on its own like humans.

According to Samsung Electronics, the TIZEN-powered Bespoke JetBot AI recognizes the largest number of objects in Korea as it pre-learned more than one million images based on deep learning. It can recognize not only various household appliances and furniture such as air conditioners, TVs, and sofas but obstacles that were difficult for robot cleaners to recognize such as socks, wires, and pets’ waste.

The Bespoke JetBot AI is the industry’s first product featuring active stereo cameras with 3D image sensors. The stereo vision cameras allow it to detect all obstacles which are larger than one cubic centimeter. Two cameras enable the robot cleaner to recognize space and objects in three dimensions like humans.

The Bespoke JetBot AI can also detect surrounding topographical features up to one meter away and 60 degrees left and right in three dimensions. Accordingly it can understand the structure of a house quickly and accurately and create a drawing.

The cleaning robot can detect even low obstacles that are only one centimeter high. Based on LiDAR sensors for self-driving cars, it is possible to select and run optimal routes according to the characteristics of space.

The cleaning robot features better cleaning performance. Its Jet Cyclone consisting of 16 air holes and digital inverter motors realize strong suction power while its Soft Floor Brush optimized for Korean floorboards sweeps fine dust.

Its dust emptying process is more convenient. After the robot cleaner finishes cleaning, it returns to its docking station, automatically empties the dust can while being charged and even before finishing cleaning. It empties dust when its dust can is full and then starts cleaning again.

The Bispoke Jetbot AI comes in five colors, misty white, satin pink, satin blue, soft greenery and soft sun yellow. It will retail at 1.59 million won.

CES 2020: Samsung says its approach to building a smart home will not require the collection of sensitive user data, unlike Amazon, Google, and similar IT companies

Samsung Electronics Co. kicked off 2020 with an array of gadgets from prototype augmented-reality glasses to a new smart speaker that the company hopes will kickstart a fresh foray into the crowded smart home arena.
The world’s biggest maker of home appliances plans to launch the Galaxy Home Mini smart speaker in early 2020, Hyunsuk Kim, chief executive officer of Samsung’s consumer electronics division, said ahead of the CES 2020 exhibition in Las Vegas this week. It comes years after Google’s Home and Amazon.com Inc.’s Echo smart speakers — and nearly 18 months after Samsung’s promised but never released Galaxy Home — but the Korean giant believes it can build a unique ecosystem around the Mini by making it the best controlling device for the home gadgets and appliances that bear its brand.
Powered by Bixby, Samsung’s answer to digital assistants like Apple Inc.’s Siri and Amazon’s Alexa, Samsung’s offering will focus on making home appliances execute voice commands rather than attempting a conversation based on artificial intelligence trained on reams of internet user data. Acknowledging negative chatter about Bixby lagging the field, Kim said orchestrating a smooth question-and-answer exchange wasn’t his priority, while the focus on hardware over user information means better consumer privacy.
“Samsung will remain a hardware company, forever,” said Kim, who is testing the Galaxy Home Mini in his own abode, connecting it to 63 devices that include his curtains, lighting and third-party gadgets. Appliances linked to the Mini will be able to carry out orders such as scheduling when the dishwasher should run or making sure the washer’s rinse cycle is complete before the user gets home. “It’s not about when we release the product, but it’s more crucial how much further we can evolve the technology. No other speaker in the world can control gadgets as much as Samsung can.”
Amazon’s Alexa has a broad ecosystem of third-party Skills, which let you use Alexa to do things like control your Xbox, stream Apple Music, find your smartphone or play quizzes and other voice-based games. Samsung, which ships half a billion devices every year, lacks the same third-party support. However, it says it can muscle its way into the AI speaker market by virtue of its own product portfolio.
Like Amazon and Google’s home ecosystem ventures, Samsung sees the Mini acting as the hub connecting all its present and future AI-embedded hardware. That would encompass any devices connected through its SmartThings app as well as gadget rivals’ products linked via infrared hookups.
With plateauing smartphone and PC sales, voice-based computing is among the biggest growth opportunities remaining in the tech industry — and the home is where some of the earliest consumer adoption is happening. Forrester Research Inc. expects the market for smart home devices to expand 26% a year between 2018 and 2023. Samsung’s own home Internet of Things business grew 10-fold in 2019 from the previous year, mainly thanks to South Korea, the U.S. and Saudi Arabia, according to Sunggy Koo, head of the business at Samsung.
Wearable technology is another big area of focus for growth-starved companies, and Samsung’s latest effort is a teaser for its own AR glasses, seeking to succeed where Google Glass failed. The company is working to minimize dizziness, said Kim, which is the key to making the glasses as small as possible. Apple and Facebook Inc. are both working on AR glasses of their own, Bloomberg News has reported, and Microsoft Corp. offers the HoloLens headset.
The original Galaxy Home speaker that was announced in the middle of 2018 never materialized. Samsung has yet to make a final decision as to whether to sell the bigger smart speaker while it focuses on the more compact Mini. But it’s also working on peripheral gadgets in the interim, including the Ballie — a companion robot in the vein of Sony Corp.’s Aibo that rolls around like BB-8 in Star Wars. Kim expects both smart speakers and mobile robots will become major products in the consumer electronics market, offering a variety of services tailored to pet, child and elderly care.
“Eventually, I hope there is no interaction between humans and technology,” Samsung home IoT chief Koo said with respect to what the smart home may look like in 2030. Devices will anticipate people’s needs and offer services based on data collected from in-house appliances, he said. “At least within the boundary of smart homes, technology development will head toward touch-less and voice-less.”
One thing in Samsung’s favor in realizing that vision, Kim said, is a more hands-off approach to consumer data than internet-based rivals that have in past years hoovered up users’ personal information to improve their services. Facebook has earned criticism for this with its Portal teleconferencing cameras, as have Amazon and Google, each of which have exposed recordings of user interactions to human analyzers.
Kim said Samsung is putting an emphasis on safeguarding privacy by doing the necessary computations on the device itself — the so-called edge computing — removing the need for user information to ever leave the smart appliance or user’s home. Unlike advertising-reliant businesses like Facebook and Google, Samsung doesn’t need to build out intimately detailed user profiles to help it target ads. Consumers will get to choose whether to share data with the cloud to access additional services or just save data on their devices, Kim said.
“We will minimize data sharing. I mean, a hardware company like us is willing to do that,” said Kim, who also spearheads Samsung’s AI push. “We are a latecomer in the AI field, but we are catching up very fast.”

Samsung Successfully Completes 5nm EUV Development to Allow Greater Area Scaling and Ultra-low Power Benefits

Samsung Electronics makes major strides in EUV-based advanced nodes, including 7nm mass production and 6nm customer tape-out

Samsung Electronics, a world leader in advanced semiconductor technology, today announced that its 5-nanometer (nm) FinFET process technology is complete in its development and now is ready for customers’ samples. By adding another cutting-edge node to its extreme ultraviolet (EUV)-based process offerings, Samsung is proving once again its leadership in the advanced foundry market.
Compared to 7nm, Samsung’s 5nm FinFET process technology provides up to a 25 percent increase in logic area efficiency with 20 percent lower power consumption or 10 percent higher performance as a result of process improvement to enable us to have more innovative standard cell architecture.
In addition to power performance area (PPA) improvements from 7nm to 5nm, customers can fully leverage Samsung’s highly sophisticated EUV technology. Like its predecessor, 5nm uses EUV lithography in metal layer patterning and reduces mask layers while providing better fidelity.
Another key benefit of 5nm is that we can reuse all the 7nm intellectual property (IP) to 5nm. Thereby 7nm customers’ transitioning to 5nm will greatly benefit from reduced migration costs, pre-verified design ecosystem, and consequently shorten their 5nm product development.
As a result of the close collaboration between Samsung Foundry and its ‘Samsung Advanced Foundry Ecosystem (SAFE™)’ partners, a robust design infrastructure for Samsung’s 5nm, including the process design kit (PDK), design methodologies (DM), electronic design automation (EDA) tools, and IP, has been provided since the fourth quarter of 2018. Besides, Samsung Foundry has already started offering 5nm Multi Project Wafer (MPW) service to customers.
“In successful completion of our 5nm development, we’ve proven our capabilities in EUV-based nodes,” said Charlie Bae, Executive Vice President of Foundry Business at Samsung Electronics. “In response to customers’ surging demand for advanced process technologies to differentiate their next-generation products, we continue our commitment to accelerating the volume production of EUV-based technologies.”
In October 2018, Samsung announced the readiness and its initial production of 7nm process, its first process node with EUV lithography technology. The company has provided commercial samples of the industry’s first EUV-based new products and has started mass production of 7nm process early this year.
Also, Samsung is collaborating with customers on 6nm, a customized EUV-based process node, and has already received the product tape-out of its first 6nm chip.
Mr. Bae continued, “Considering the various benefits including PPA and IP, Samsung’s EUV-based advanced nodes are expected to be in high demand for new and innovative applications such as 5G, artificial intelligence (AI), high performance computing (HPC), and automotive. Leveraging our robust technology competitiveness including our leadership in EUV lithography, Samsung will continue to deliver the most advanced technologies and solutions to customers.”
Samsung foundry’s EUV-based process technologies are currently being manufactured at the S3-line in Hwaseong, Korea. Additionally, Samsung will expand its EUV capacity to a new EUV line in Hwaseong, which is expected to be completed within the second half of 2019 and start production ramp-up from next year.

5nm: A Catalyst of the Fourth Industrial Revolution and What It Means for Semiconductor Innovations

This week, Samsung Electronics announced that its 5-nanometer(nm) FinFET process technology based on EUV lithography  is now ready for production. This is a remarkable accomplishment and testament to the capability of our colleagues at the S3 wafer fab in Hwaseong, Korea and their supply chain partners.
For me, what is most exciting about this milestone is that it highlights how far the semiconductor industry innovations have come today and provides a glimpse into the evolutions that will shape the industry of tomorrow.
Consider that the 5nm process is here in just six months after last October’s unveiling of the first commercial application of EUV in our 7nm process. It’s a rapid progress made possible in large part by running thousands of wafer layers through EUV exposure systems each week. Hands-on experience is the only way to ascend the EUV learning curve, and that body of knowledge is growing daily.
In the learning process, we’re seeing one of the biggest and broadest benefits of EUV – the simplification of design by moving away from increasingly complex multi-patterning lithography strategies. While still early, it’s increasingly clear that the reduced number of mask steps and more straightforward process is nothing short of a revolution for silicon designers. Sighs of relief will be heard as EUV will be seamlessly incorporated into the existing design architectures.
Samsung’s 5nm is the next step in the evolution of EUV. 5nm will be more efficient and feature new innovations including Samsung’s proprietary Smart Diffusion Break (SDB) transistor architecture. One of the most important aspects of 5nm is that it supports 25 percent area reduction and 10 percent performance improvement or 20 percent power reduction than 7nm.
Also, it will be largely design-rule compatible with the existing design of 7nm. Therefore, it is essentially a recharacterization of the technology, not redesign, which will substantially reduce time and the cost of implementation. This combination of technological advance and economic advantage is very much in line with a grand tradition of the semiconductor industry.
This merging of technological advancement and economic benefits is very much in line with the grand tradition in the semiconductor industry as well as technologies including 5G, AI, Connected & Automotive, Robot, etc. – constantly serving as a catalyst for the fourth industrial revolution, while simultaneously driving costs down. That’s why the evolution-moment of 5nm is, in its own unique way, as important as the innovation-moment of 7LPP.
Bringing EUV into production has been a long, challenging process. It required substantial investment of time, money, and human resources. While there were certainly moments of doubt along the way, we had to pursue our vision. The 5nm announcement offers compelling evidence for the value of the investment. As businesses from diverse fields including Foundry, Fabless, the Design House, Packaging, Tests, etc., the semiconductor ecosystem will grow stronger. This is a new chapter for the semiconductor industry, and we are excited to be part of the continued journey in innovation.

During KBIS (Kitchen and Bath Industry Show) 2019, Samsung is offering a peek at innovations that lie just around the corner, in a Technology Showcase hosted at the Encore Hotel, Las Vegas, from February 19 to 21.
The exhibition will reveal the company’s vision for the future, with a range of cutting-edge lifestyle concepts on display. At the event, Samsung is unveiling the newest addition to its intelligent robotic Bots lineup, alongside several devices first showcased in January at CES 2019.

Samsung Bot Chef

We can all appreciate an extra pair of hands in the kitchen, sharing the burden of the laborious and repetitive tasks that go into creating delicious meals. First unveiled at KBIS 2019, Samsung Bot Chef is an AI-powered chef’s assistant – a “cobot”, or collaborative robot – that assists them as they whip up gourmet dishes. Bot Chef is designed to be easy to use and highly versatile, with a sleek exterior that hides its advanced mechatronics.
Bot Chef is optimized for kitchen use and is capable of a wide range of kitchen tasks – from chopping and whisking, to pouring and cleaning. Based on SARAM, Samsung’s multi-purpose programmable robotic platform, the lightweight robotic manipulator arm has six degrees of freedom, with the diameter, reach and safety of a human arm. This allows it to perform with a payload just enough to lift common, everyday kitchen items, making it ideal for homes and small businesses. With advanced internal and external sensors and AI-based planning algorithms, the Bot Chef works alongside a person safely, even when they get in each other’s way.
Users can interact with the robotic arm using simple and intuitive voice commands. Meanwhile, the underlying AI and machine-learning skills platform allows users to easily program tasks to perform using voice control, physical manipulation and app-based controls, thereby creating new “skills”. New skills can also be downloaded, customized and shared as part of the online ecosystem, providing endless possibilities in the kitchen. To stir a pot of soup, for example, a user can download the “stirring” skill from the skills ecosystem. Bot Chef can autonomously understand the location of objects, so the user can tell it where to find the spoon, and which pot to stir.

Chef Garden

Many cooks will tell you that there is a certain kind of joy that only fresh, locally sourced ingredients can bring. When it comes to fruit and vegetables, the freshest and most flavorful are home-grown. Chef Garden, debuting at KBIS 2019, aims to provide a farm-to-table experience in the comfort of your own home, with an AI farming platform that effortlessly produces fresh, pesticide-free fruit and vegetables all year round.
Chef Garden integrates seamlessly with the next generation of Samsung Family Hub, using the power and water connections already provided to the refrigerator. To grow their plants, users can choose from a wide variety of seed capsules and place them in the Growing Zone, which applies fogponics technology to create a nutrient fog that delivers water and nutrients to the plants, saving water and keeping the inside of the Growing Zone clean. Chef Garden can control conditions to ensure an optimal environment for growth, making predictions about growth status and controlling harvest time. Thanks to its integration with Family Hub, the platform can also recommend recipes based on the fruit and vegetables that are ready to harvest, as well as the items already in the fridge, helping to minimize waste.

GEMS: Gait Enhancing and Muscle Strengthening

Our bodies are our true homes – and strong muscles are vital to ensure these homes run smoothly. Samsung GEMS was originally developed to help the elderly improve their mobility by applying assistive forces to their lower-limb joints, synchronized with their movements. GEMS has three versions, each assisting a different joint: GEMS-H, GEMS-K and GEMS-A target the hip, knee and ankle, respectively.
In-depth clinical studies for GEMS-H have shown that it can enhance the gait efficiency and stability resulting in more dynamic and balanced walking, as well as a dramatic reduction in energy consumption. With these insights, we decided to expand the scope of its applications from rehabilitation alone to providing proactive musculoskeletal healthcare for everyday users. GEMS-K was designed to reduce the impactive load at the knee joint, the main cause of knee pain when standing up or walking on the stairs. Samsung Bot Air and Bot Clean

Housework can seem like a never-ending task. What’s more, you might move your air purifier from room to room without knowing if you are targeting the right location or vacuum the same spot repeatedly while missing those hard-to-reach corners.
Making use of sensors throughout the house to gauge air quality, the Samsung Bot Air will move directly to the source of unclean air and begin purifying the area. Users can see the real-time improvement of indoor air quality through its intuitive lighting effects, which go from red for bad air quality to green for fresh air. Taking cleaning to the next level, the Bot Clean is an intelligent and interactive robotic vacuum cleaner that was newly revealed at KBIS 2019. Samsung Launches Star Wars Limited Edition of POWERbot™ Robot Vacuum

New limited edition VR7000 boasts all the innovative technology of Samsung’s robot vacuum POWERbot™ with new features and a look designed to appeal to Star Wars fans around the world

Samsung Electronics today introduced a new Star Wars limited edition of the widely acclaimed POWERbot™ robot vacuum cleaner, the VR7000. The result of a collaboration between Samsung and Star Wars fans, the innovative and powerful vacuum with iconic Darth Vader and Stormtrooper designs is intended to captivate fans in anticipation of the December release of “Star Wars: The Last Jedi,” the final film in the Disney and Lucas Films saga.
The Darth Vader version of the POWERbot™ features a specially created cover using custom premium materials that resembles Darth Vader’s all-black mask while the Stormtrooper version replicates the look of a white and black Stormtrooper’s helmet. The Darth Vader model comes with Wi-Fi connectivity and its own remote control. Both models also offer fun and unique sound effects appropriate for each character. For example, when powering on the Darth Vader unit, the vacuum will play and mimic the character’s infamous breathing.
In order to create a special edition product authentic and true in the eyes of Star Wars fans, Samsung worked very closely with super fans at every step, from product planning to design, production, marketing, and distribution. Samsung представит "интеллектуального TIZEN-робота" на MWC 2017?

Немецкий портал GIGAtech (www.giga.de) сообщает, что голландский Galaxy Club "нарыл" на просторах Сети информацию о готовящемся к выпуску роботизированном интеллектуальном устройстве Samsung. Как предполагают авторы Galaxy Club, южнокорейский техногигант готовит мощного конкурента существующим ныне аналогам Google и Amazon Home Echo.
Судя по обнаруженным документам, Samsung уже зарегистрировал в Европе патент на "человекоподбного робота", который способен к голосовому общению на довольно высоком уровне (не путать с более продвинутым голосовым AI-помощником Bixby, который собираются устанавливать на флагманские смартфоны Samsung).
Прототип такого устройства под названием OTTO был продемонстрирован в прошлом году на выставке CES 2016 в Лас-Вегасе (США). Британский телеканал BBC News даже анонсировал это устройство, работающее на базе мини-компьютера серии Samsung ARTIK, в одном из своих сюжетов.
Серийный образец, скорее всего, получит наименование Samsung Hello, о чём свидетельствует регистрационный документ. Однако и это ещё не все новости.
На портале Zauba, где публикуются данные об экспортно-импортных операциях в Индии, говорится о поступлении в бангалорский центр разработок Samsung образцов некоего устройства под маркировкой CM-R2010. Это произошло ещё в ноябре 2016 года.
И, наконец, четвёртый источник (официальный сайт Wi-Fi Alliance) говорит о том, что эта организация сертифицировала CM-R2010 как устройство с беспроводным достуом в Сеть на базе операционной системы TIZEN 2.2.1.
Таким образом, напрашивается вывод, что гаджет является предполагаемым AI-роботом Samsung Hello.
Авторы GIGAtech говорят, что это и есть "наследник" упомнянутого OTTO. На это якобы намекают и сотрудники исследовательской IoT-лабратории Samsung в Сан-Хосе (Калифорния, США), которые сбросили кое-какую информацию в twitter.
Иными словами, это TIZEN-робот, который, возможно, будет показан на выставке MWC 2017 в Барселоне (Испания) в конце февраля-начале марта.
