[Invitation] Galaxy Awesome Unpacked 2021

Samsung announced an Unpacked event coming up on March 17th, 2021, its second for the year so far. The invitation calls the event “Galaxy Awesome Unpacked.” Between recent A-series leaks, it seems safe to assume that we’ll see the Galaxy A52 and A72 devices debut.

An entire event dedicated to unveiling midrange devices is a little unusual, but the leaked information we’ve seen thus far has pointed to Samsung taking these phones very seriously. The A52 5G looks like it will receive monthly security updates — something Samsung has tended to reserve for higher-end phones — and spec leaks have indicated we can expect high-refresh rate screens.

If nothing else, we can hope that Samsung will bring the energy from last year’s unusual video to keep the event entertaining. You can watch by tuning in to Samsung’s YouTube channel on March 17th at 10AM ET/7AM PT.

Samsung has unveiled new models of home appliances that will be available in 2021

On its official youtube channel, Samsung Electronics showcased new smart home appliances that will be available globally* this year. Among the new products are the Family Hub 2021 refrigerator, a powerful robot vacuum cleaner with an improved navigation system, a smart cooker with a built-in hood, multifunctional ovens, dishwashers, as well as new lines of washing machines with improved characteristics. For example, the line of economical top-loading washing machines has received a new design of the tub, which allows you to prevent laundry from tangling during the washing and spinning process. This significantly increases the lifespan of your favorite dresses and saves money.      

All presented electronic home assistants work on the basis of the TIZEN operating system, connect to the Internet network and allow remote control from smartphones, smart watches, Family Hub refrigerators and even premium Samsung TVs through the proprietary SmartThings universal application.

Samsung to hold TV launch event ‘Unbox & Discover’

Samsung Electronics will hold a launch show for its TV products, dubbed “Unbox & Discover 2021”, next month.

Samsung said Thursday it has sent out invitations to global partners and media for the event set for March 2.

“Samsung will share its vision for how the company’s latest innovative products are set to redefine the role of the TV through cutting-edge technologies, beautiful design and impactful partnerships,” it said.

The company is expected to unveil its Lifestyle lineup for 2021, including new TVs, sound bars and monitors, at the event.

It will be livestreamed on Samsung.com and YouTube.

Recall that Samsung Electronics has been the №1 vendor in the global TV market for over 15 years. In addition, its TIZEN Smart TV open software platform is also the most popular globally. Samsung also dominates the soundbar market (with its subsidiary HARMAN) and is a pioneer in the newest product segment - smart monitors, also using the TIZEN platform.

How Samsung's SmartTag Bluetooth trackers work (and how to buy them)

The SmartTag and SmartTag Plus are brand-new Bluetooth trackers announced alongside the three new Galaxy S21 phones. Here's what you should know.

For a start, SmartTags connect to SmartThings Find, a service that's already built directly into Samsung Galaxy phones -- SmartThings is Samsung's hub for smart home devices. There are also two different types of SmartTags, which makes things confusing right off the bat (don't worry, we'll explain below). 

Here's everything we know about Samsung's SmartTag so far (and what we don't), from the price and way it works, to how to figure out which SmartTag to buy.

Samsung SmartTag: What does it do?

Samsung's SmartTag is a small, battery powered device that you can attach to things like a wallet, backpack or even your pet.

Once it's set up and linked to your Samsung account, the tag can be found using the SmartThings Find app on your phone.

How do you use a SmartTag to find a lost item?

After you realize you've lost an item, open the SmartThings Find app on your smartphone. Next, you'll tap on the Find card, pick the device you want to locate and wait for it to load. 

If you're close to the lost item, you use the gauge on the screen to show how far away the item is. The fuller the gauge gets, the closer you are. To help you find the tag, you can make it play a sound.

If the tag isn't close to you, don't worry, it can still be found. Other Samsung devices near the tag will anonymously locate it for you, and then let you know where it is, all without the owner of the device doing a thing. It's done in the background and is encrypted to ensure privacy. 

Why are there two different types of SmartTags?

In a classic Samsung move, there are two different types of SmartTags. The first, which is available alongside the Galaxy S21 lineup, uses Bluetooth Low Energy as its connection standard. The other version, called SmartTag Plus, will use ultrawideband connectivity (UWB). 

There are two versions of the SmartTags, because not all Samsung Galaxy phones support UWB, but they do all support BLE. Only the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra, the Galaxy S21 Plus and S21 Ultra support UWB.

What's the difference between the two SmartTags?

Using the SmartThings Find app to locate tags that are equipped with Bluetooth Low Energy, you won't be able to see a tag's exact location, but an estimate of how far away or close it is. It's the same kind of tech that's used to stream music from your phone to your wireless earbuds or allow your phone to act as a key with a smart lock. 

With ultrawideband, your phone and the tag are able to talk to each other and estimate a more precise location, within a few inches. Using a series of short pulses, a UWB device can communicate measuring how long it takes for one of the pulses to be received and answered by another UWB device. In short, UWB is far more precise than BLE. 

Will both Bluetooth and UWB SmartTag models be available at the same time?

No. Samsung is launching the standard SmartTag first, with the UWB version SmartTag Plus launching later.

How much do SmartTags cost?

The SmartTag that's available for the Galaxy S21 launch is $30 for one, $50 for two and $85 for a four-pack. The UWB version will launch at $40 for one and $65 for a two-pack.

What is this bundle deal with a Galaxy S21?

If you preorder a Galaxy S21, you'll get one SmartTag for free, along with a credit that ranges from $100 to $200, depending on which S21 model you order. 

Will both tags work with every Galaxy phone?

No. Currently, the Galaxy S21 Plus, S21 Ultra and last year's Note 20 Ultra support the UWB SmartTag technology. All other Galaxy phones only support the BLE version of the SmartTag.

What else should I know?

The extra features of UWB mean that you can use a dedicated augmented reality mode in the SmartThings Find app that will help you pinpoint a tag's location in the real world, instead of using a gauge that fills in as you get closer to it. 

Using AR, you'll be able to hold up your phone and view exactly where the tag is, using a combination of your phone's camera and a graphic in the app to see the world around you.

Нидерландский техноресурс LetsGoDigital сообщает, что Samsung Electrronics намерен представить в рамках грядущей выставки потребительской электроники Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2021 компьютерные мониторы, выполненные по собственной технологии органических светодиодов (OLED).

На скорое появление таких продуктов указывает новая торговая марка "OLED provided by Samsung", заявку на регистрацию которой южнокорейский техногигант направил в Ведомство Европейского союза по интеллектуальной собственности (European Union Intellectual Property Office, EUIPO).

В документе говорится, что брэнд "OLED provided by Samsung" может использоваться применительно к мониторам для компьютеров, телевизорам, различным информационным табло и гибким дисплеям.

Отраслевые эксперты полагают, что Samsung близок к выпуску высококлассных OLED-мониторов для персональных компьютеров по собственной технологии. Ожидается, что размер первых моделей составит 33–35 дюймов по диагонали.

Выставка CES 2021 пройдёт с 11 по 14 января в онлайн-формате.

South Korean tech giant registers "OLED provided by Samsung" trademark

The Dutch tech resource LetsGoDigital reports that Samsung Electronics intends to present computer monitors made using its own organic light-emitting diode (OLED) technology at the upcoming Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2021.

The imminent appearance of such products is indicated by the new trademark "OLED provided by Samsung", the application for registration of which the South Korean tech giant sent to the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO).

The document states that the brand "OLED provided by Samsung" can be used for computer monitors, televisions, various signage and flexible displays.

Industry experts believe that Samsung is close to producing high-end OLED monitors for personal computers using its own technology. The first models are expected to measure 33-35 inches diagonally.

CES 2021 will be held online from 11 to 14 January.

В статье Forbes говорится, что положительный опыт Apple (Watch OS) и Samsung (TIZEN) в создании собственных операционных платформ "с нуля" обеспечил этим брэндам главенствующие позиции на рынке премиальных смарт-часов с высокой маржинальностью. Это позволяет разрабатывать софт и "железо" с наиболее продвинутыми характеристиками и новаторскими функциями, что весьма затруднительно в случае сотрудничества с Google, который может ограничивать производителей по своему усмотрению.

Samsung и Apple не испытывают каких-либо сложностей, одновременно контролируя создание софта и проектирование аппаратной части, в то время как те компании, которые решили сэкономить за счёт лицензирования ОС у стороннего разработчика (то есть у Google), заведомо обрекают себя на постепенное отставание от конкурентов.

За последние годы многие производители смарт-часов перешли на собственные платформы, поскольку здесь ещё есть место для свободной конкуренции. Например, список ведущих производителей носимых устройств, включая упомянутых выше Samsung и Apple, в последнее время пополнился такими именами как Huawei (Harmony OS), Garmin (Garmin OS) и т.д. Forbes: More and more smartwatch manufacturers are moving away from the Android Wear

The rollercoaster of 2020 tech news has produced one more unexpected turn: the rumoured OnePlus Watch won’t be powered by Google’s Wear OS (ex-Android Wear). 

The news comes from reliable OnePlus leaker Max Jambor, who tweeted this weekend that the new wearable won’t carry Google’s software. Jambor later confirmed to 9To5Google that it won’t even use a skinned or modified version of Wear OS.

If accurate, OnePlus is headed in an entirely new direction for its first smartwatch. There’s good reason or this, too. Not only is there plenty of space for a competing wearable OS (in a way there isn’t for a new smartphone OS), it also means OnePlus can have the freedom to build the watch experience from the ground up, without being constrained by Google’s struggling platform. 

The features offered by Samsung’s TIZEN-powered Galaxy Watch 3 and Apple's Watch OS-powered Apple Watch far outstrip what’s on offer from Android-based wearables. Features like fall detection, comprehensive and in-depth health and fitness monitoring and extreme stuff - like blood oxygen sensors - aren’t widely available on Wear OS devices, if at all. The simple reality is that Apple and Samsung are pushing the industry forward and offering value for money based on an roll-call of new features.    

The question is: which way will the OnePlus Watch go?

Probably the new watch will follow OnePlus’ recent switch to cheaper products and dramatically undercut the competition. Especially in light of the current difficult economic circumstances. That might mean the device doesn’t pack high-end features like an ECG test or blood oxygen monitoring. But the move to using its own OS means we’ll almost certainly see some unique OnePlus-style abilities. 

The Chinese company has been quite open about its plans to build a connected suite of products, including TVs, headphones, a range of phones and now a watch. We’ll have to see what the Chinese company brings to the wearables table when the watch launches, which is rumoured to be next year.

Thus, there is a clear trend towards further marginalization of Android in the smartwatch business, despite some recent improvements to the OS. Many experts believe that even the possible purchase of Fitbit, one of the major manufacturers of wearable electronics, will not help Google to make Android Wear the dominant platform, as was the case with smartphones and tablets.

Как стало известно технопорталу TheElec, в 2021-м году Samsung Electronics планирует выпустить больше бытовой техники со встроенными ультрафиолетовыми (UV) светодиодами.
В прошлом месяце менеджмент подразделения бытовой техники Samsung принял решение об использовании источников ультрафиолетового излучения (тип UV-C) с длиной волны от 250 до 280 нм, которые полезны при дезинфекции. UV-сетодиоды будут устанавливаться на большем количестве домашних IoT-устройств, чем это было до последнего времени, сообщили отраслевые источники.
Сейчас Samsung устанавливает UV-светодиоды только на некоторых моделях своих бытовых приборов, включая холодильники серии Bespoke.
UV-A (от 315 до 380 нм) с большей длиной волны используются, в основном, при производстве печатных плат. UV-B (от 280 до 315 нм) используется в био- и медицинской отраслях.

Samsung home appliances will help their owners in the fight against COVID-19 and other viral infections

Samsung Electronics plans to launch more home appliances with ultraviolet (UV) LED applied to them in 2021, TheElec has learned.
Samsung decided on the matter in September to apply UV-C ultraviolet light with wavelength between 250nm to 280nm that are useful for disinfection LED on more of its home electronics, sources said.
Samsung currently install UV-C LED on only some of its home appliances, including its Bespoke refrigerators.
UV-A (315nm to 380nm) with longer wavelength are used mostly in printed circuit board production. UV-B (280nm to 315nm) are used in bio and medical sectors.
Samsung decision to expand the application of UV-C LED is due to the COVID-19 pandemic as more consumers worry over the virus.
The company has been relatively passive in applying UV-C LED to its appliances compared to rival LG Electronics.
Samsung is expected to apply UV-C LED in around 20% to 30% of its home appliance models launching next year. The South Korean tech giant is yet to finalize on how many of its models will have the LED installed.
The South Korean tech giant produces refrigerators, microwaves, dishwashers, air conditioners, washing machines, driers and air purifiers, among other home electronic devices.
Samsung’s LED business, called S-LED, will likely not produce the UV-C LED on its own and contract the production out to LED companies in South Korea and Greater China. 
In South Korea, Seoul Semiconductor and Semiconlight have the capacity to make UV-C LED. 
UV LED don’t use mercury and has disinfection and deodorant effects. They are more durable and require more sophisticated technology to make compared to LED for lighting. 
The UV LED market has been touted to grow but is getting steam from the recent COVID-19 pandemic.
