Easy on the Eyes: How the Galaxy S10’s Display Protects Users from Blue Light

If you’re usually on your phone before bed and you find yourself having trouble falling asleep, you’re not alone.
According to recent findings from Counterpoint Research, nearly half of all global smartphone users spend more than five hours a day on their mobile device. Once the sun goes down, studies show that the blue light from your smartphone’s screen and other artificial light sources can throw your biological clock out of whack – making it harder to fall asleep, and possibly causing more serious problems down the line.
To safeguard users’ eyes from blue light’s potentially harmful effects, Samsung equipped the Galaxy S10 line with a display that reduces users’ exposure to blue light wavelengths – without compromising picture quality. Let’s take a closer look at how blue light affects our eyes, and how the Galaxy S10’s display protects them.

Why Blue Light Exposure Matters

Blue light is generally defined as a high-intensity, short-wavelength (380 to 500-nanometer) range of light on the visible light spectrum.
These days, whether it’s through our electronic devices’ screens, energy efficient lighting, or simply sunlight, we’re constantly being exposed to blue light. Which isn’t all bad. According to the Royal Society Te Apārangi, a not-for-profit organization based in New Zealand, “Adequate exposure to daylight, particularly during the morning, is important for synchronizing the circadian body clock, which can affect many processes including sleep, metabolism, immune function and even our mood.”
However, when viewed at night, blue light has been shown to suppress the production of melatonin (a hormone that regulates sleep–wake cycles) more powerfully than other types of light, affecting our ability to sleep. Recent research from the University of Toledo also suggests that blue light from mobile devices can cause harm to the eye’s retina.
In this digital age, with smartphone users spending increasingly more time on their mobile devices, it’s easy to see why blue-light reducing technology has become absolutely necessary.

How the Galaxy S10 Reduces Blue Light Transmission

The Galaxy S10, Galaxy S10+, Galaxy S10e and Galaxy S10 5G’s Dynamic AMOLED display was built from the ground up to minimize eye strain so users can get a better night’s sleep.
Galaxy S10 users can sleep soundly knowing that their smartphone’s display has been certified by world-renowned testing firm TÜV Rheinland1 to drastically reduce blue light’s harmful effects. When building the display, which received TÜV Rheinland’s official ‘Eye Comfort’ certification, Samsung applied new organic materials that reduce blue light wavelengths measuring between 415 and 455nm (the range that research2 suggests is particularly harmful to the retina) by up to 42 percent3 – without the use of filters.
This significant reduction in blue light transmission is the product of Samsung’s continuous commitment to developing industry-leading AMOLED technology. The Dynamic AMOLED display reduces the transmission of ‘harmful’ blue light (wavelengths in the 415 to 455nm range) to below 7 percent – the industry’s lowest mark. This means that the Galaxy S10’s display reduces nearly 50 percent more blue light than previous AMOLED displays (approx. 12 percent), and more than 60 percent more than most smartphone LCD displays (approx. 18 percent).
The Galaxy S10’s display also produces incredibly lifelike colors. To enable users to enjoy crisp, immersive colors day or night, Samsung went to great lengths to ensure that the display’s blue-light reducing innovations wouldn’t compromise image quality.
Samsung’s Mobile Digital Natural Image engine (mDNIe) is one such example of an image quality-preserving innovation. Whereas with previous smartphones’ displays, activating a blue-light filter would inevitably add a noticeable tint to the screen, this proprietary technology enables the Galaxy S10’s display to produce vibrant, immersive colors4 and reduce blue light transmission at the same time.
To offer users additional protection, the Galaxy S10 also features a built-in blue-light filter, accessible via the Quick Panel, that blocks up to 99 percent of blue light wavelengths. Users also have the option to set the blue-light filter to turn on automatically before they go to bed by activating Bixby’s preset ‘Before bed’ Routine, accessible under Settings > Advanced features > Bixby Routines.
As ByungChang Kwak of Samsung’s Mobile Communications Division explained, in addition to opting for a blue-light reducing smartphone like the Galaxy S10, there are simple things that consumers can do to help protect their eyes when using electronics devices. “For example, adjusting ambient lighting to minimize screen glare can help reduce eye strain,” said Kwak, “and remembering to blink frequently can help prevent dry eye.”
Going forward, Kwak added, “Samsung will continue to develop technologies that promote better health and make the user experience more convenient.”

Visualize Your New Room

Samsung’s AR service, Bixby Vision*, acts as a visual guide, allowing you to see more with your smartphone camera. The home décor function of the Galaxy S10’s Bixby Vision can show you how your home might look with new home appliances and furniture, virtually positioning them wherever you wish to see them. To enable the function, simply open up Bixby Vision, select the home décor function from the apps menu and point your camera to the area where you want to place home appliances or furniture. After choosing an appliance or piece of furniture, the object will appear wherever you tap on the screen. You can choose sofas, rugs, tables, fridges, or any other home product that you want, and virtually place them wherever you like.
The discovery doesn’t end there: Bixby Vision offers even more services that allow you to visualize your new appliances and furniture from the comfort of your own home. The AR service can apply a 3D effect to key Samsung home appliances, allowing you to see how doors open, for example. Collaborating with U.S. online furniture company, Wayfair, Bixby Vision’s home décor function runs automatically whenever you encounter 3D content on the website within the Samsung Internet app, enabling you to see what the product would look like in your room without leaving your house.
“We are planning to increase the types of home appliances and furniture that support the home décor function,” said Martin Lee of Product Strategy team at Samsung Electronics.

With the Galaxy S10 5G, you can make speedy assessments of an object’s dimensions without frantically searching for the tape measure. Using the 3D Depth Camera on the Galaxy S10 5G, the Quick Measure app shows you the height, width and length of the object captured by your camera. Convenience Is Key: the Evolution of the Bixby Key

Samsung Electronics’ new Galaxy S10 line has introduced exciting enhancements to the Bixby key.
Bixby’s introduction in 2017 laid the groundwork for the creation of a connected, open ecosystem of devices and services that allows you to get more done, more comfortably. Now, the platform’s latest update has introduced even more ways for users to simplify their day, including the all-new ability to customize your Galaxy device’s Bixby key in a way that works for you.
The Bixby key allows you to access Bixby anytime, anywhere, with a simple press of a button. When the Bixby was first introduced, a single press would pull up Bixby Home, while a press and hold would allow you to speak to Bixby directly. The new Bixby takes the Bixby key’s convenience to the next level by allowing you to use it to instantly activate an app or one of your Quick commands of your choosing.
To facilitate this handy function, Samsung incorporated the ability to launch Bixby main page with either a single or double press, and customize the remaining option to activate a favorite feature. As Samsung’s Executive Vice President and Head of Software and Artificial Intelligence, Eui-Suk Chung, explained, adding this capability allows users to access frequently used Quick commands or apps faster and more flexibly.
“Our top priority is to offer our consumers the best possible experiences,” said Chung. “So we’re constantly listening to and learning from them. Because they’ve expressed that they’d like more tools to get things done quickly and easily, we decided to offer them the freedom to customize the Bixby key.”
Another useful function of the Bixby key lies in Bixby’s enhanced Dictation feature. Sometimes, it can be very inconvenient to have to manually type out a long text, email or memo on a small keyboard. Bixby’s Dictation function simplifies these situations by allowing you to use the Bixby key to quickly and easily dictate your message directly into your phone. With the keyboard open, simply press and hold the Bixby key to begin your message, and release it once you’ve said what you want to say. It’s as simple as that.
Since first introducing it in 2017, Samsung has consistently improved Bixby based on users’ feedback. One of the ways that the company enhanced the Bixby key specifically was by minimizing instances of accidental Bixby activations. When the Bixby key is pressed while your phone is in your pocket, or when your screen is locked, because it’s unlikely that you intended to do so, the Bixby key has been calibrated not to launch Bixby in these situations.
The next part of the Bixby key’s enhancement process involved enabling the key to launch Bixby with a double press. When using your phone to watch a video or take a picture, for instance, accidentally pressing the Bixby key could interrupt your enjoyment. Adding this capability minimizes this inconvenience, as users are not likely to press the Bixby key twice by mistake.
As Chung explained, going forward, Samsung will continue to enrich the Bixby key with new capabilities that add convenience to users’ lives. “Our guiding rule at Samsung is to evolve our products and technologies in ways that are meaningful to consumers,” said Chung. “Just as Bixby’s evolution is ongoing, so too is the Bixby key’s.”

Galaxy S10 Earns DisplayMate’s Highest-Ever A+ Grade

Another bar-raising mobile display, another record-breaking rating from the industry’s authority on display technologies.
After a comprehensive evaluation process, DisplayMate Technologies has deemed the Galaxy S10’s display “the most color accurate display that we have ever tested, [and] almost certainly considerably better than your existing smartphone, 4K UHD TV, tablet, laptop, and computer monitor.” Like the Galaxy Note9 and Galaxy S9 before it, the Galaxy S10 established or matched several smartphone display performance records during DisplayMate’s extensive tests, ultimately becoming the latest flagship Galaxy device to earn the firm’s highest-ever “Excellent A+” grade.
Compared to the Galaxy S9, the Galaxy S10 offers markedly better outdoor visibility, power consumption, color accuracy, and more.
Featuring a peak luminance of 1215 nits, the Galaxy S10’s display produces crisp, vibrant visuals when users need them – such as when they’re outside and under direct sunlight, or in environments with lots of ambient light. And with a relative power efficiency rating of 1.54 watts – an improvement on the Galaxy S9’s 1.70-watt rating – the Galaxy S10’s display is not only brighter than last year’s model, but also more energy efficient.
In addition to being the first mobile display to support HDR10+, a next-generation open standard for high dynamic range (HDR) video, the Galaxy S10’s display has been verified by DisplayMate to offer record-setting color accuracy. Its 0.4 Just Noticeable Color Difference (JNCD) rating in the DCI-P3 color range is a marked improvement over the Galaxy S9’s 0.7 JNCD score. This means that the Galaxy S10’s display can be counted on to deliver outstanding picture quality, with a level of color accuracy that is, according to DisplayMate’s report, “virtually indistinguishable from perfect.”
To help users protect their eyes from blue light, which studies suggest can affect our ability to get a good night’s rest, the Galaxy S10 features built-in technology that reduces blue light by up to 42 percent.1 The display has also received a coveted ‘Eye Comfort’ certification from world-class German testing and certification body TÜV Rheinland for its record-low blue light output. Whereas conventional smartphone OLED panels’ visuals feature roughly 12 percent blue light, the Galaxy S10’s feature just seven percent – the lowest level in the business.
After detailing the display’s record-setting enhancements in his report, DisplayMate Technologies’ President, Dr. Raymond Soneira, noted that “What is particularly significant and impressive is that Samsung has been systematically improving OLED display performance with every Galaxy generation since 2010.”
The Galaxy S10 adds an exciting new chapter to that legacy, and underlines Samsung Electronics’ continued commitment to developing the most immersive displays on the market.
The Galaxy S10, Galaxy S10+ and Galaxy S10e will officially launch on March 8 in select markets.

Российский рок-музыкант Антон Вартанов, лидер группы «Магнитная Аномалия», представил альбом «Нулевое влияние», который был полностью записан и сведён на смартфоне Samsung Galaxy A7.
Samsung Galaxy A7 стал настоящей портативной студией звукозаписи посреди океана. Альбом был записан на Филлипинах. Основная работа над звуком проходила на смартфоне: клавишные и барабанные партии музыкант играл, просто касаясь пальцами виртуальной клавиатуры на экране устройства. Подключённая звуковая карта была нужна только для записи вокала и гитары. «Если бы я был рэпером или поп-исполнителем, мне было бы достаточно только USB-микрофона, но так как я рок-музыкант, мне понадобилось подключить к телефону гитару», – объяснил Антон.
Сведение альбома тоже было сделано на телефоне, без использования внешней звуковой карты – мощности чипа Samsung Galaxy A7 для этого было достаточно. C мастерингом альбома на смартфоне помог сервис Mastering Box. Кроме того, музыкант работал в приложениях FL Mobile Studio, Audio Evolution Mobile Studio, Wave Editor.
При записи альбома музыкант использовал солнечную энергию: телефон заряжался от солнечной батареи, а внешняя звуковая карта получала питание от телефона.
«Идея записать альбом на мобильный телефон пришла мне очень давно, лет 10-15 назад, но тогда технические возможности устройств не позволяли этого сделать. Я даже всем друзьям говорил, что хочу записать альбом на мобильный телефон и однажды это сделаю. Недавно вспомнил об этом и понял, что время пришло. Galaxy A7 оказался лучшим вариантом для этой задачи», – отметил музыкант.
По словам Антона, в Samsung Galaxy A7 оптимально сочетаются возможности для создания музыки и видео и доступная цена – менее 20 тысяч рублей. Одним из решающих факторов для музыканта стало наличие на устройстве отдельного входа 3,5 мм для наушников, чтобы можно было заряжать гаджет и писать музыку одновременно. Кроме того, важное значение имело качество камеры смартфона. В ближайшем будущем музыкант планирует снять на этот же смартфон несколько видеоклипов.

Russian musician recorded the album on the smartphone Samsung Galaxy A7

Russian rock musician Anton Vartanov, leader of the Magnetic Anomaly group, presented his new album, which was completely recorded and mixed on the Samsung Galaxy A7 smartphone.
The Samsung Galaxy A7 has become a true portable recording studio in the middle of the ocean. The album was recorded in the Philippines. The main work on the sound took place on the smartphone: the keyboard and drum parts the musician played, simply touching the virtual keyboard on the device with his fingers. The connected sound card was only needed for recording vocals and guitars. “If I were a rapper or pop singer, I would only need a USB microphone, but since I am a rock musician, I needed to connect a guitar to the phone,” explained Anton.
Mixing the album was also done on the phone, without using an external sound card - the power of the Samsung Galaxy A7 chip was enough for that. Mastering Box service helped with mastering the album on the smartphone. In addition, the musician worked in applications FL Mobile Studio, Audio Evolution Mobile Studio, Wave Editor.
When recording the album, the musician used solar energy: the phone was charged by the solar battery, and the external sound card was powered by the phone.
According to Anton, the Samsung Galaxy A7 optimally combines the possibilities for creating music and video and an affordable price. One of the decisive factors for the musician was the presence on the device of a separate 3.5 mm headphone input so that you can charge the gadget and record music at the same time. In addition, the quality of the smartphone camera was important. In the near future, the musician plans to shoot several video clips on the same smartphone.

В: Чего ожидать пользователям от Galaxy Fold?

Galaxy Fold предоставляет абсолютно новый способ взаимодействия с устройством и позволяет получить лучшее из двух категорий – смартфона и планшета. Это компактный телефон, который раскрывается в самый большой дисплей в истории мобильных устройств Samsung, оптимизированный под экосистему и приложения Android.
Программное обеспечение Galaxy Fold было разработано для рационального использования в различных сценариях. Когда смартфон находится в сложенном виде, пользователь может видеть уведомления и совершать необходимые манипуляции с устройством. В раскрытом виде большой иммерсивный экран может использоваться для просмотра приложений и использоваться в режиме многозадачности.

В: Что вы понимаете под многозадачностью?

Возможности многозадачности Galaxy Fold практически безграничны. Например, пользователь может открыть 3 приложения одновременно на главном дисплее для просмотра страниц, написания текста, обмена сообщениями и просмотра видео в одно и то же время.
Galaxy Fold обеспечивает наиболее простой и удобный способ работы с приложениями: активная на наружном экране программа автоматически масштабируется на основной (внутренний), если устройство раскрыть, и наоборот. Переключаться между двумя экранами настолько же естественно, как читать книгу.

В: Все ли приложения поддерживают App Continuity (Интегрированную поддержку двух экранов) и окно многозадачности?

Galaxy Fold получил уникальный интерфейс, благодаря нашему сотрудничеству с Google и разработчиками Android-приложений. Вместе с партнёрами мы разрабатываем ПО с интегрированной поддержкой двух экранов, для того, чтобы можно было работать не только на устройствах Samsung, но и на Android в целом.
Мы хотим быть уверенными, что любимые приложения и сервисы пользователей оптимизированы для уникального интерфейса Galaxy Fold. В сотрудничестве с нашими партнёрами мы основали тестовую лабораторию, чтобы иметь возможность вовлекать в процесс и взаимодействовать с топовыми компаниями напрямую и создавать лучшие сервисы для нашего складного смартфона. В частности, Samsung и Google имеют богатую историю тесного взаимодействия и наша совместная работа над складным устройством ещё одно доказательство этого сотрудничества».
Со временем появится большее количество приложений для работы на складных экранах, а благодаря ПО Galaxy Fold, будет обеспечиваться наилучший опыт использования программ, ещё не оптимизированных для складных устройств.

В: Как создавалось складное мобильное устройство?

За созданием складного смартфона стоит огромная работа. Мы создали заново аппаратное и ПО, обеспечили совместимость приложений для оптимального удобства использования.
Мы рады представить первый складной смартфон от Samsung и находимся в предвкушении того, что ждет нас дальше – от «складного» до «рулонного» и даже «эластичного».
Дизайн новых устройств, которые могут сгибаться разными способами, больше не является невыполнимой задачей, и Samsung готов создавать значимый опыт для потребителей, который поможет им ещё больше посвящать себя тому, что они любят.

Interview: “Galaxy Fold Provides a Completely New Way to Use a Smartphone”, EVP Eui-Suk Chung

Samsung Electronics recently unveiled its groundbreaking innovation, the Galaxy Fold, Samsung’s first foldable smartphone ushering in a whole new chapter in mobile history. The pioneering Galaxy Fold is set to transform the way people manage their daily lives with their smart devices thanks to the Fold’s dynamic versatile usability and multitasking possibilities.
To learn more about how the Galaxy Fold came to be and the powerful effect it is set to have on consumers’ lives, Samsung Newsroom sat down with Eui-Suk Chung, Executive Vice President and Head of Software and Artificial Intelligence at Samsung’s Mobile Communications Business during the MWC19 in Barcelona.

Q. The potential Galaxy Fold has for the way we use our smartphones is immense. What motivated such a development?

“Our understanding of consumer needs – in particular, demand for a larger device screen that is comfortable to hold – led us to create this revolutionary device. Samsung had already pioneered category-defining innovation with the Galaxy Note series, the ‘phablet’ hybrid, but we had noticed that a demand for even larger screens to keep up with content consumption has still not wavered. We debuted the prototypes of a flexible display technology in 2011, but it took another eight years to develop the technology to deliver this product in a truly meaningful way for users as a direct response to the way people are currently using their phones.”

Q. Which is?

“In brief, all the time and for all things. With the Galaxy Fold, we are bringing greater device mobility, an expanded screen and a versatile camera into one device that can slip into your pocket. Galaxy Fold is for those who want it all on a bigger screen, but without the bulk – a ‘phone plus more’.”

Q. So what can users expect from the Galaxy Fold?  

“Galaxy Fold provides a completely new way for consumers to use a smartphone and get the best out of both of the worlds it draws upon, smartphone and tablet. It is a compact device that unfolds to reveal Samsung’s largest-ever mobile display, optimized for the Android ecosystem and applications on it.
The Galaxy Fold’s software was designed to provide streamlined usage for various scenarios. When the user folds it, they can take a quick look at smartphone notifications and other essentials. Then, when it is unfolded, the user can use the larger immersive display for higher quality viewing on the apps they require and in-depth multitasking.”

Q. Can you expand on the Galaxy Fold’s multitasking capabilities?

“With the Galaxy Fold’s Multi-Active Window, the multitasking possibilities are virtually endless. For example, a user can open up to three apps simultaneously on the main display to surf, text, share and watch without missing a beat. We developed this main display to allow multitasking with three apps because users can already use two at once, if they wish, on existing smartphones. The Galaxy Fold provides the best possible experience of three apps at once, all in a very comfortable way.
The Fold also makes app usability even easier – the app in use on the cover display with automatically transfer back to the main display when the device is opened, and then transition seamlessly back to the cover display when closed. Users will find that the experience of shifting from the cover to the main display and vice versa is, thanks to the inward fold, as satisfying, as natural and as easy as reading a book.”

Q. Do all apps support App Continuity and Multi-Active Window?

“The Galaxy Fold features UX functionality unlike other devices thanks to the partnerships we have with Google and app developers in the Android developer community. We worked very closely with Google on developing app-compatible software to the end of creating not just a Samsung proprietary solution, but general Android solutions.
We continue to work with the Android developer community to ensure apps are optimized for the Galaxy Fold and that user experience only continues to improve. Support for App Continuity and Multi-Active Window will vary based on the application and the developer’s adherence with Google policies and guidelines.
As more apps are developed to be compatible with foldable-specific features, Samsung will continue to provide the best possible experience for apps not yet optimized for a foldable device thanks to the Galaxy Fold’s app compatibility software.”

Q. What has this collaborative development process been like?

“We wanted to ensure that users’ favorite apps and services were optimized for the Galaxy Fold’s unique UX. Working closely with our partners, we set up a test lab so that we could directly engage and work with top companies to bring the best services to our foldable smartphone. In particular, Samsung and Google have a rich history of close collaboration, and our work together on this foldable device is another example of that.”

Q. Finally, could you elaborate more on the experience of developing a foldable mobile device?

“The making of a foldable smartphone was a large undertaking – from creating materials and methods to overcoming mechanical challenges. From the start, we were focused on achieving the best user experience. All the new elements we had to create – hardware, software, app compatibility – are all layers that have come together to form a device with optimum usability at its core.
We also broke barriers to create the Galaxy Fold. It features a UX functionality unlike other devices made possible by our app developer and Google partnerships.
We are proud to have introduced Samsung’s first-ever foldable smartphone, and we are excited about what’s next – from ‘foldable’ to ‘roll-able’ and even to ‘stretch-able’. New device designs that can be folded in multiple ways are no longer beyond the realm of possibility and Samsung is ready to usher in these options and create meaningful experiences for consumers that help them do more of what they love.”
