Against the backdrop of strong performance by major divisions of Samsung Electronics, the decline in Samsung Mobile sales looks particularly dramatic

It seems that Samsung Electronics has not made the proper conclusions regarding the policy of the division that develops smartphones, tablets and smartwatches. Against the backdrop of the success of the rest of the business areas, Samsung Mobile is again showing disappointing drops in sales and profits. Moreover, of all the leading smartphone manufacturers, Samsung posted the worst Q3 results compared to last year.

According to the analytical company IDC, despite maintaining its leading position in the global market, shipments of Samsung smartphones decreased from 80.4 to 69.0 million units, that is, by 14.2%. As a result, the share of Android Galaxy smartphones decreased from 22.7% to 20.8%. By contrast, Apple has significantly increased shipments from 41.7 to 50.4 million units, or 20.8%. This led to an increase in Apple's share from 11.7% to 15.2% and returned the American competitor to the 2nd place.

The third position is occupied by the Chinese Xiaomi. This manufacturer reduced shipments in annual terms by 4.6%, but due to the overall reduction in the global market, Xiaomi's share even increased slightly - from 13.1% to 13.4%.

This is followed by the Chinese brands Vivo and Oppo, which occupy 10.1% and 10.0% of the global smartphone market. A year ago, their shares were 8.9% and 8.6%, respectively.

All these figures indicate that Samsung's top management has not been able to draw the right conclusions from the events of recent years. It is clear that the hope for "harmonious synergy" with Google turned out to be a mirage. In the future, Google itself intends to become a major player in the smartphone market, and the current "honeymoon" with a naive bride named Samsung is nothing more than a temporary alliance while Americans accumulate strength and experience for a big breakthrough. By voluntarily accepting the role of "hardware slave" for Google, the Korean tech giant missed the initiative, consigning to oblivion the idea of creating its own operating platform and competitive services. The transition of the Galaxy smartwatch from the well-proven TIZEN platform to the despised WearOS by many users has proved that the elderly top management at Samsung Mobile is concerned with only one thing: to make it to retirement without big shocks and risks.

In the current difficult situation and increasing competition from China, this is a deeply flawed approach. Rather than admitting mistakes and giving way to younger and more ambitious executives, Samsung's two elderly curators, DJ Koh and Rae Tae-moon, do expensive beauty treatments to help them look 10 years younger. In recent years, we have witnessed high-profile failures of Samsung Mobile executives more than once, whether it be the story of the battery fire in the premium Galaxy Note7 smartphones, the scandal over the collaboration with the fake fashion brand Supreme, or the big embarrassment on the eve of the Galaxy Fold presentation. Unfortunately, Samsung Mobile does not draw the right conclusions from what is happening, and we are becoming more and more worried about the future of their mobile and wearable device business, which may not survive until the next decade, repeating the unenviable fate of LG Mobile.

Более того, из всех ведущих производителей смартфонов, Samsung показал наихудшие результаты по итогам 3-го квартала относительно прошлогодних показателей.

По данным аналитической компании IDC, несмотря на сохранение лидирующей позиции на глобальном рынке, поставки смартфонов Samsung сократились с 80,4 до 69,0 миллионов штук, то есть на 14,2%. В результате доля Android-смартфонов Galaxy уменьшилась с 22,7% до 20,8%.

Все эти цифры свидетельствуют о том, что топ-менеджменту Samsung так и не удалось сделать правильные выводы из событий последних лет. Совершенно очевидно, что надежда на "гармоничную синергию" с Google оказалась миражом. В будущем Google сам намерен стать крупным игроком на рынке смартфонов и нынешний "медовый месяц" с наивной невестой по имени Samsung является не более чем временным союзом, пока американцы накапливают силы и опыт для большого рывка. Добровольно согласившись на роль "аппаратного раба" для Google, корейский техногигант упустил инициативу, предав забвению идею по созданию собственной операционной платформы и конкурентоспособных сервисов. Переход смарт-часов Galaxy с хорошо зарекомендовавшей себя платформы TIZEN на презираемую многими пользователями WearOS доказал, что престарелый топ-менеджмент в Samsung Mobile озабочен лишь одним: дотянуть до пенсии без больших потрясений и рисков.

В нынешней непростой ситуации и усиливающейся конкуренции со стороны Китая это глубоко ошибочный подход. Вместо того, чтобы признать ошибки и уступить место более молодым и амбициозным руководителям, оба пожилых куратора мобильного подразделения Samsung ДиДжей Ко (DJ Koh) и Ро Дэ-мун (Rae Tae-moon) проходят дорогие косметические процедуры, чтобы выглядеть на 10 лет моложе.

We had to quote this old parable after watching the new "visual show" that the annual Samsung software conference has become due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. The never-ending series of enthusiasm for the "successes and achievements" of the South Korean tech giant in the IT business against the backdrop of spectacular computer graphics will undoubtedly impress infantile viewers. However, this is unlikely to satisfy high-profile application developers and cybersecurity experts.

Recall that back in 2014, Samsung announced a course towards creating a unified operating platform for smart devices that could seamlessly connect smartphones, tablets, smartwatches, cars and various household appliances. This opened up unprecedented prospects for the convenient interaction of all devices connected to the Internet and would minimize the cost of creating software and cybersecurity systems. TIZEN OS was chosen as a single platform, which has incorporated the promising developments of leading players in the IT industry, including Samsung, Intel, Nokia and others.

TIZEN is an open source operating system based on Linux and compares favorably with Google software products for better optimization and cost effectiveness.

TIZEN OS takes up little space on the system disk and is not too demanding on the computing resources of electronic gadgets, so it can provide good performance with limited processor power and a small amount of RAM. Also, one of the most important advantages of TIZEN is the absence of backdoors for unauthorized tracking of user actions.

Such prospects were not at all pleasing to the management of Google, which was strongly afraid of Samsung's gradual refusal to use their solutions based on Android OS and services tied to this platform. As a result of blackmail, threats and promises of numerous preferences in the event of continued use of Android, the top management of Samsung Mobile unit shamefully gave up their positions and proclaimed a course for an "eternal alliance" with Google. Samsung mobile business representatives now invariably mention "harmonious synergy with Google" in every presentation.

It should be noted that they had to make concessions not from a good life. At the end of 2016, a corruption scandal erupted in South Korea around the administration of the then President of the country, Park Geun-he, into the orbit of which the top leaders of the Samsung conglomerate were drawn. Many top managers were under investigation, and some even ended up in prison. At the same time, the chairman of Samsung Group Lee Kun-hee was in a coma after suffering a heart attack. His only male heir, vice chairman of Samsung Electronics Lee Jae-yong, was also under investigation. As a result, the largest South Korean chaebol, which provided about 20% of the country's GDP, was effectively beheaded. Left-wing populists who came to power in 2017 sought to please the outraged "progressive public" and did everything they could to put Lee Jr. behind bars.

These actions by the new leadership of South Korea actually paralyzed Samsung's work, which further undermined the conglomerate's position in a number of key business areas. Historians and economists have yet to assess the damage caused by the actions of the leftists and the so-called "independent prosecutors" who with incredible frenzy destroyed the business of the Lee family.

In May 2017, the last specialized conference of TIZEN developers was held under the auspices of Samsung (TDC 2017), where plans for the implementation of TIZEN OS in smartphones and other electronic devices were announced. However, after Vice Chairman Lee Jae-yong, who personally oversaw the development of the mobile version of TIZEN, was convicted of "bribing" a close friend of the President of South Korea, the policy of Samsung's mobile division underwent radical changes. Taking advantage of the confusion in the ranks of the top management of the Korean conglomerate, Google managed to impose its own rules of the game on the heads of Samsung Mobile, which were frightened by unclear prospects. In the same year, the production of smartphones based on TIZEN OS was discontinued, and in 2021 it was announced that the Samsung Galaxy smartwatch would switch to WearOS 3 (ex-Android Wear), which is unpopular among users.

As a result, the concept of creating a single platform was destroyed, and now Samsung is forced to spend a lot of money to maintain work on several operating systems at once: Android, Android Go, WearOS 3, Chrome OS, Fuchsia from Google, Windows from Microsoft and its own TIZEN. It is hardly possible to call it a wise decision, but for some reason such wastefulness does not bother either investors or journalists covering events in the world of IT technologies at all.

We invited an independent expert Nikolai Iznov, who has long been cooperating with the editors of our information resource, to comment on the situation.

Question: What are your impressions of the presentation of Samsung's key software solutions at the SDC21 virtual event?

N.I.: Unfortunately, my opinion has not changed for the better in any way after the factual refusal of the South Koreans from a single operating platform. We observe disunity in the activities of various divisions of the conglomerate. While Samsung's home appliances, digital signage and TVs continue to run on the TIZEN platform, premium laptops remain with Windows, and mobile and wearable devices use Google's zoo of operating systems. If the "promising" Fuchsia OS from the same Google is added to this "zoo", it will be even more difficult to understand this "diversity". Unlike Apple, which is very successful in operating its devices on various modifications of its own closed platform MacOS, Samsung has abandoned the formula "one brand - one operating platform."

In my opinion, this is absolute nonsense, given the variety of products manufactured under the Samsung brand. And if in the computer business, dominated by Microsoft, this can somehow be understood, in the business of mobile devices, the lack of its own operating platform from the market leader looks absolutely illogical. The truth is, in the eyes of consumers, Android will never become an elite operating platform. Therefore, even the most technically advanced Android smartphone will not be perceived as an exclusive product in a huge herd of manufacturers using the same OS. Samsung cannot understand this in any way. When they claim to be competing with Apple, the experts laugh about it. Samsung can only compete with Chinese manufacturers, since it simply does not make sense to compare the margins of the mobile device business between Samsung and Apple. These are completely different weight categories.  

Question: In the foreword to our conversation, we talked about the difficult situation in which Samsung found itself amid a series of corruption scandals in the highest echelons of political power in South Korea. We believe that concerns about the future of the mobile business have pushed the conglomerate's top management to an alliance with Google. Do you agree with this opinion?

N.I.: A top manager of a high class can be considered only one who does not go with the flow and does not adjust to the current situation, but is able to impose his own rules of the game even in adverse circumstances. Such cases are not uncommon and we all know examples of such successful people as Elon Musk with his business empires PayPal, SpaceX, Tesla, SolarCity and so on. You can also mention Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, Richard Branson (Virgin Group) and many others. At various times, they found themselves in critical situations, but they emerged victorious thanks to the perseverance and strength of the entrepreneurial spirit.

The persons listed above have never given up on achieving their goals and have found ways to successfully realize their even the wildest dreams.

Unfortunately, in the case of Samsung, we see a clear desire to facilitate the task of maintaining the mobile business through a dubious deal with Google, which in the long term does not bode well.

Question: Unlike South Korea, the American authorities do not spread rot on their top businessmen, even if they are guilty of something. For example, when the European Commission convicted Apple of tax evasion, which caused damages in the amount of 14 billion euros, American politicians and the most influential American media strongly defended the Cupertino's corporation. Don't you think that the original rules of the game are completely different? 

N.I.: This is partly true, but it is unlikely to radically change the situation. Someone at Samsung just didn't have the willpower to face adversity. It has long been known that the elderly top management of Samsung is very reluctant to take risks. But, in the current conditions, you cannot build a high-margin business without risk. Following the path of least resistance is a vicious tactic. Among the leading smartphone manufacturers (Apple, Google and until recently Huawei), only Samsung does not have its own operating platform and relies on the mercy of the gentlemen from Mountain View, as well as on the sanctions of the American authorities against Chinese competitors. This means that South Koreans have no compelling reason to fully develop their own services such as Bixby, Samsung Pay, Samsung Health, because you can always "hedge" using Google Assistant, Google Pay, Alexa, Cortana and other third-party software solutions. All this does not stimulate the staff to play well in one team. Combining software solutions of other companies by creating "docking nodes" between them cannot be represented as a full-fledged "own ecosystem".

Question: In South Korean chaebols, unlike Western corporations, a lot depends on the decisions of the head of the big family business. What do you think is the role of the current de facto head of Samsung, Lee Jae-yong, compared to his predecessors?

N.I.: After a series of corruption scandals, imprisonment and the payment of extortionate taxes following the death of Chairman Lee Kun-hee in the fall of 2020, the position of his heir was significantly weakened. The descendants of Lee Sr. were forced to part with a large stake in the conglomerate in order to pay inheritance taxes. In addition, Lee Jr. is still under the scrutiny of the prosecutor's office, which is trying to initiate new criminal and administrative cases against him. Recently, the "crown prince Samsung" was fined for the use of propofol, a potent sedative, due to which the American "king of pop" Michael Jackson died. I do not think that the person taking propofol has the willpower to withstand adverse circumstances. How this affects key business decisions, we can only guess.

Нам пришлось процитировать эту старую притчу после просмотра очередного "визуального шоу", в которое трансформировалась ежегодная конференция разработчиков софта Samsung из-за продолжающейся пандемии COVID-19. Нескончаемая череда восторгов относительно "успехов и достижений" южнокорейского техногиганта в IT-бизнесе на фоне эффектной компьютерной графики, несомненно, произведёт впечатление на инфантильных зрителей. Однако, это вряд ли удовлетворит высококлассных разработчиков приложений и экспертов по кибербезопасности.

Напомним, что ещё в 2014-м году Samsung провозгласил курс на создание единой операционной платформы для смарт-устройств, которая могла бы бесшовно соединить смартфоны, планшеты, смарт-часы, автомобили и различные бытовые приборы. Это открывало невиданные ранее перспективы для удобного взаимодействия всех подключённых к интернету девайсов и позволило бы минимизировать затраты на создание софта и систем кибербезопасности. В качестве единой платформы была выбрана TIZEN OS, которая вобрала в себя многообещающие разработки ведущих игроков IT-индустрии, включая Samsung, Intel, Nokia и других.

TIZEN является открытой операционной системой на базе Linux и выгодно отличается от софтверных продуктов Google лучшей оптимизацией и экономичностью. TIZEN OS занимает немного места на системном диске и не слишком требовательна к вычислительным ресурсам электронных гаджетов, поэтому может обеспечить хорошую производительность при ограниченной мощности процессора и небольшом объёме оперативной памяти. Также одним из важнейших преимуществ TIZEN является отсутствие бэкдоров для несанкционированной слежки за действиями пользователей.

Такие перспективы совсем не радовали руководство Google, которое сильно опасалось постепенного отказа Samsung от использования их решений на базе Android OS и привязанных к этой платформе сервисов. В результате шантажа, угроз и обещаний многочисленных преференций в случае продолжения использования Android, топ-менеджмент подразделения Samsung Mobile позорно сдал свои позиции и провозгласил курс на "вечный союз" с Google. О "гармоничной синергии с Google" представители мобильного бизнеса Samsung теперь неизменно упоминают в каждой своей презентации.

Необходимо отметить, что на уступки им пришлось пойти не от хорошей жизни. В конце 2016 года в Южной Корее разразился коррупционный скандал вокруг администрации тогдашнего президента страны Пак Кын-хэ, в орбиту которого оказались втянуты и высшие руководители конгломерата Samsung. Многие топ-менеджеры находились под следствием, а некоторые даже попали за тюремную решётку. В то же время председатель Samsung Group Ли Кун-хи находился в коматозном состоянии после перенесённого сердечного приступа. Его единственный наследник по мужской линии, вице-председатель Samsung Electronics Ли Джей-ён, также оказался под следствием. В результате, крупнейший южнокорейский чеболь, обеспечивавший около 20% ВВП страны, фактически был обезглавлен. Пришедшие к власти в 2017-м году левые популисты стремились угодить возмущённой "прогрессивной общественности" и сделали всё возможное, чтобы упрятать Ли-младшего за решётку.

Эти действия нового руководства Южной Кореи фактически парализовали работу Samsung, что в дальнейшем подорвало позиции конгломерата в целом ряде ключевых направлений бизнеса. Историкам и экономистам ещё только предстоит оценить весь ущерб, причинённый действиями леваков и так называемых "независимых прокуроров", которые с невероятным остервенением разрушали бизнес семейства Ли.

В мае 2017 года состоялась последняя профильная конференция TIZEN-разработчиков (TDC 2017) под эгидой Samsung, где были оглашены планы по внедрению TIZEN OS в смартфоны и другие электронные устройства. Однако после того, как вице-председатель Ли Джей-ён, который лично курировал проект мобильной версии TIZEN, был осуждён "за дачу взятки" приближённой подруги президента Южной Кореи, политика мобильного подразделения Samsung претерпела радикальные изменения. Воспользовавшись смятением в рядах топ-менеджмента корейского конгломерата, Google удалось навязать свои правила игры напуганным неясными перспективами руководителям подразделения Samsung Mobile. В том же году производство смартфонов на базе TIZEN OS было прекращено, а в 2021-м было объявлено о переходе смарт-часов Samsung Galaxy на непопулярную среди пользователей WearOS 3 (экс-Android Wear).

В результате концепция создания единой платформы была разрушена, и теперь Samsung вынужден тратить большие средства на поддержание работы сразу на нескольких операционных системах: Android, Android Go, WearOS 3, Chrome OS, Fuchsia от Google, Windows от Microsoft и собственной TIZEN. Назвать это мудрым решением вряд ли возможно, однако такое расточительство почему-то совсем не беспокоит ни инвесторов, ни журналистов, освещающих события в мире IT-технологий.

Прокомментировать создавшуюся ситуацию мы пригласили независимого эксперта Николая Изнова, который давно сотрудничает с редакцией нашего информационного ресурса.

Вопрос: Каковы ваши впечатления от презентации ключевых решений Samsung в области софта на виртуальном мероприятии SDC21?

Н.И.: К сожалению, моё мнение никак не изменилось в лучшую сторону после фактического отказа южнокорейцев от единой операционной платформы. Мы наблюдаем разобщённость в деятельности различных подразделений конгломерата. В то время как бытовая техника, цифровые вывески и телевизоры Samsung продолжают работать на платформе TIZEN, премиальные ноутбуки остаются с Windows, а мобильные и носимые устройства используют целый "зоопарк" операционных систем от Google. Если к этому "зоопарку" добавится ещё и "перспективная" Fuchsia OS от той же Google, то разобраться в этом "разнообразии" будет ещё сложнее. В отличие от Apple, которая весьма успешно эксплуатирует свои девайсы на различных модификациях собственной закрытой платформы MacOS, в Samsung отказались от формулы "один брэнд - одна операционная платформа". На мой взгляд, это абсолютный нонсенс, учитывая всё разнообразие продуктов, выпускаемых под маркой Samsung. И если в компьютерном бизнесе, где доминирует Microsoft, это ещё как-то можно понять, то в бизнесе мобильных устройств отсутствие собственной операционной платформы у лидера рынка выглядит абсолютно нелогично. Правда такова, что в глазах потребителей Android никогда не станет элитарной операционной платформой. Поэтому даже самый технически продвинутый Android-смартфон не будет восприниматься как эксклюзивный продукт в огромном стаде производителей, использующих одну и ту же ОС. Этого в Samsung никак не могут понять. Когда они заявляют, что конкурируют с Apple, у экспертов это вызывает гомерический смех. Samsung может конкурировать только с китайскими производителями, так как сравнивать маржинальность бизнеса мобильных устройств у Samsung и Apple просто не имеет смысла. Это абсолютно разные весовые категории.     

Вопрос: В предисловии к нашей беседе мы рассказали о той непростой ситуации, в которой Samsung оказался на фоне череды коррупционных скандалов в высших эшелонах политической власти Южной Кореи. Мы полагаем, что опасение за будущее мобильного бизнеса подтолкнуло топ-менеджмент конгломерата к союзу с Google. Разделяете ли вы это мнение?

Н.И.: Топ-менеджером высокого класса можно считать лишь того, кто не плывёт по течению и не подстраивается под сиюминутную ситуацию, а умеет навязывать собственные правила игры даже в неблагоприятных обстоятельствах. Подобные случаи не редкость и все мы знаем примеры таких успешных людей как Илон Маск с его бизнес-империями PayPal, SpaceX, Tesla, SolarCity и так далее. Можно также упомянуть основателя Amazon Джеффа Безоса, Ричарда Брэнсона (Virgin Group) и многих других. В разное время они попадали в критические ситуации, но выходили победителями благодаря упорству и силе предпринимательского духа.

Перечисленные выше персоны никогда не отказывались от достижения поставленной цели и находили способы успешно реализовывать свои даже самые смелые мечты.

К сожалению, в случае с Samsung мы видим явное желание облегчить задачу по сохранению мобильного бизнеса путём сомнительной сделки с Google, которая в перспективе не сулит ничего хорошего.

Вопрос: В отличие от Южной Кореи, американские власти не гнобят своих топ-бизнесменов, даже если они в чём-то провинились. Например, когда Еврокомиссия уличила Apple в уклонении от налогов, в результате чего чего был нанесён ущерб в размере 14-ти миллиардов евро, американские политики и наиболее влиятельные американские медиа решительно встали на защиту корпорации из Купертино. Не кажется ли вам, что исходные правила игры совершенно разные?

Н.И.: Отчасти это так, но вряд ли радикально меняет ситуацию. Просто кому-то в Samsung не хватило силы воли противостоять неблагоприятным обстоятельствам. Давно известно, что великовозрастный топ-менеджмент Samsung очень не любит рисковать. Но, в нынешних условиях, без риска высокомаржинальный бизнес не построишь. Следовать по пути наименьшего сопротивления - это порочная тактика. Среди ведущих производителей смартфонов (Apple, Google и до недавнего времени Huawei), только Samsung не имеет собственной операционной платформы и уповает на милость господ из Маунтин-Вью, а также на санкционные меры американских властей в отношении китайских конкурентов. Это означает, что у южнокорейцев нет веских причин в полную силу развивать собственные сервисы типа Bixby, Samsung Pay, Samsung Health, поскольку всегда можно "подстраховаться" с помощью Google Assistant, Google Pay, Alexa, Cortana и прочих сторонних программных решений. Samsung Galaxy Watch4 dropped record prices in America due to users' claims to the WearOS 3 platform from Google

In the wake of a wave of discontent among many buyers "the best Samsung smartwatches of all time" (as advertised reviews of bribed journalists and bloggers say), sales of these devices plummeted. To save the day, the management of Samsung Mobile went to an unprecedented price cut. This happened less than 3 months after the start of sales, which had not been observed before. Never before has the launch of Samsung's latest wearables been more shameful than this year. As we already reported, all the main complaints are related to the presence of the terrible Wear 3 operating system from Google. Wear OS 3 is clearly inferior to the TIZEN platform, which Samsung has consigned to oblivion for the sake of "great friendship" with Google. At the same time, users have no complaints about the design and hardware.

On the eve of Samsung announced the release of a major software update in the Galaxy Watch4/Watch4 Classic, but this is unlikely to radically improve its work, since all problems are associated with numerous "birth injuries" of the Wear 3 operating system (ex-Android Wear), which we have repeatedly warned about earlier.

After an avalanche of critical reviews in the forums of owners of the latest Samsung wearable devices based on WearOS 3 from Google, user dissatisfaction manifested itself even on such a well-known Internet portal as XDA-developers. Buyers of rather expensive Galaxy Watch4 note the deterioration of the proprietary health monitoring service and the disappearance of a number of useful functions that are available on previous models using the TIZEN operating platform. Panellists wonder why the Galaxy Watch4 advertised on every corner went on sale with so many bugs and stripped-down features. Increasingly, there are voices about class-action lawsuits against the manufacturer for the apparent inconsistency of advertising promises with the real possibilities of this "miscarriage", born of the "marriage" between Samsung and Google. It is no less surprising that both corporations are proud to announce the "great collaboration", and Google has even begun to advertise Samsung smartphones.

The negative tone of discussion regarding the Galaxy Watch4 also prevails on other Internet resources, where problems are honestly discussed without regard to advertising chatter. On the official website of Samsung Russia ( https://www.samsung.com/ru/watches/all-watches/ ), it is easy to notice that all previous models of wearable devices of the Gear and Galaxy families using the proprietary TIZEN platform receive only good and excellent reviews (4-5 points out of 5 possible). At the same time, the average score of the Galaxy Watch4 is 1-3 points lower.

I wonder if Samsung will draw at least some adequate conclusions from this, rather than artificially raising the customer rating with the help of paid bots?

You can't do anything in Samsung's Health app, all the data is hardly accessible.

The TECH WORLD news blog continues to follow the sad story of Samsung's betrayal of its own operating platform, TIZEN. After the solemn announcement of the Galaxy smartwatch transition from TIZEN to WearOS 3, we have already collected a whole "encyclopedia of shame", which accumulates information about the problems of the new Samsung product related with Google's software.

While numerous tech resources spew hype about the Samsung/Google's "miracle alliance", there are still brave journalists who are not going to gloss over the truth about the real state of affairs. So, for example, the TechGenyz (TG) portal spoke about the next problems of the newest smart watches Galaxy Watch4.

The author of the article points out that from the very beginning of the sale of this new product, users are constantly faced with one or another breakdown.

This time, the owners of the Galaxy Watch4 complain about the lack of a vibration signal about incoming notifications, although they set this type of notification when setting up the device. Additionally, Watch4 wearers report abnormally low battery life when they activate the gesture recognition feature.

All these complaints are regularly submitted to the Samsung technical support forum, but there are still no clear answers from the manufacturer. Technical support staff responds that "the manufacturer collects and organizes information about problems in order to solve them as quickly as possible." However, almost nothing has changed for the better since the start of sales in August. Samsung has already released several updates with vague explanations about "improving system stability", although all major bugs was not been fixed. Apparently, many problems are simply insoluble due to the presence of "birth traumas" in the Android Wear operating system (later renamed WearOS), which, according to the vast majority of IT specialists, is the worst platform for wearable devices. It is constantly criticized for its poor performance, a lot of bugs and increased battery consumption. In addition, experts emphasize the high degree of WearOS vulnerability to hacker attacks. Recall that after Samsung refused to use its own operating platform TIZEN in wearable devices, users of the new Galaxy Watch4 smart watches lost such privileges as the ability to sync with iPhone (iOS), Huawei (HarmonyOS) and Honor (HarmonyOS) smartphones.  

Realizing the full potential of new smartwatches is possible only if it is synchronized with Android-smartphones Samsung Galaxy, and even then not in all countries. In addition, due to the huge volume and poor optimization of WearOS 3, the manufacturer had to significantly increase the amount of permanent memory and RAM in the Galaxy Watch4, as well as install a more powerful processor, which negatively affected the autonomy (about 2.5 times lower compared to previous TIZEN-powered models). But that's not all. WearOS 3 apps take up several times more space, have low efficiency and lots of bugs. There were also numerous complaints about the decrease in the performance of the proprietary Samsung Health application based on WearOS 3 due to the less accurate determination of the user's physical condition. At the same time, many third-party fitness apps show even worse results or don't work at all. As a result, many frustrated owners are ditching the Watch4 and returning their purchased devices to stores.

Industry insiders claim that the Galaxy Watch4's sales are at a very low level and that they don't cover the costs that Samsung spends on advertising these devices. In addition, Samsung even before the start of sales lowered the selling price of its latest wearable devices, having learned about the sharply negative reaction of potential buyers to the price lists previously released by bloggers.

Thus, the South Korean tech giant, contrary to initial expectations, not only failed to increase the marginality of this business, but also went into a deep "minus" regarding the profitability of sales of devices on the TIZEN platform.

После того, как было торжественно объявлено о переходе смарт-часов Galaxy с TIZEN на WearOS 3, мы собрали уже целую "энциклопедию позора", где накапливаются сведения о проблемах нового продукта Samsung, связанных с наличием программного обеспечения от Google.

В то время, как многочисленные проплаченные техноресурсы и блогеры публикуют исключительно рекламные перлы с беспрестанным восхвалением "чуда чудесного" от альянса Samsung/Google, всё ещё находятся отважные журналисты, которые не собираются замалчивать правду о реальном положении дел. Так, например, портал TechGenyz (TG) рассказал об очередных "косяках" новейших смарт-часов Galaxy Watch4. Автор статьи указывает, что с самого начала продаж этой новинки, пользователи постоянно сталкиваются то с одной, то с другой проблемой. На этот раз владельцы Galaxy Watch4 жалуются на отсутствие вибросигнала о пришедших уведомлениях, хотя они устанавливали такой тип оповещения при настройке девайса. Кроме того, поступают сведения об аномальном разряде батареи, когда активирована функция "Умные жесты". Все эти жалобы регулярно поступают на форум технической поддержки Samsung, но никаких внятных ответов от производителя до сих пор нет. Сотрудники отдела технической поддержки отвечают, что "производитель накапливает и систематизирует сведения о проблемах, чтобы решить их как можно быстрее". Однако с момента начала продаж в августе почти ничего в лучшую сторону не изменилось. Samsung выпустил уже несколько обновлений с невнятными пояснениями об "улучшении стабильности работы системы", хотя все основные баги так и не были устранены. Судя по всему, многие проблемы просто неразрешимы из-за наличия "родовых травм" в операционной системе Android Wear (позже была переименована в WearOS), которая, по мнению абсолютного большинства IT-специалистов, является наихудшей платформой для носимых устройств. Её постоянно критикуют за низкую производительность, наличие большого количества багов и повышенный расход заряда батареи. Кроме того, эксперты особо отмечают высокую степень уязвимости WearOS для хакерских атак.  

Напомним, что после отказа Samsung от применения собственной операционной платформы TIZEN в носимых устройствах, пользователи новых смарт-часов Galaxy Watch4 лишились таких привилегий как возможность синхронизации со смартфонами iPhone (iOS), Huawei (HarmonyOS) и Honor (HarmonyOS). Реализовать весь потенциал новых смарт-часов можно только при условии синхронизации с Android-смартфонами Samsung Galaxy, да и то не во всех странах. Кроме того, из-за огромного объёма и плохой оптимизации WearOS 3, производителю пришлось значительно увеличить объём постоянной и оперативной памяти в Galaxy Watch4, а также установить более мощный процессор, что самым негативным образом отразилось на автономности (примерно в 2,5 раза ниже по сравнению с предыдущими моделями на TIZEN OS). Но и это ещё не всё. Приложения для WearOS 3 занимают в несколько раз больше места, имеют низкую эффективность и множество ошибок. Также отмечены многочисленные жалобы на снижение эффективности работы фирменного приложения Samsung Health на базе WearOS 3 из-за менее точного определения физического состояния пользователя. В то же время многие сторонние фитнес-приложения показывают ещё более худший результат или вообще не работают. В результате многие разочарованные владельцы Watch4 возвращают купленные устройства обратно в магазины.

Индустриальные инсайдеры заявляют, что уровень продаж Galaxy Watch4 оказался на весьма низком уровне и совершенно не покрывает издержек, которые Samsung тратит на рекламу этих устройств. Кроме того, Samsung ещё до начала продаж снизил отпускную цену на свои новейшие носимые устройства, узнав о резко негативной реакции потенциальных покупателей на предварительно обнародованные блогерами прайс-листы.

Таким образом, южнокорейский техногигант, вопреки первоначальным ожиданиям, не только не смог увеличить маржинальность этого бизнеса, но и ушёл в глубокий "минус" относительно рентабельности продаж девайсов на платформе TIZEN.

In our blog, we have repeatedly mentioned the problems that many users of the "revolutionary" Samsung Galaxy Watch4 have encountered after switching to Google's worst operating platform WearOS 3. In addition to the fact that due to poor optimization and "congenital traumas" this "updated" operating system has increased power consumption, requires more productive hardware and is incompatible with many mobile devices (iPhone, Huawei, Honor), recently there have been more complaints about disgusting work various applications. On forums and in social networks, users talk about many different bugs that they encountered during the operation of the latest Samsung wearable devices, without receiving a clear answer from the manufacturer about the causes of the problems and how to fix them. In particular, many Galaxy Watch4 owners point to the impossibility of normal use of sports applications that randomly "shut down" after launch, or show results that are very far from the true indicators. The interface and menu navigation features of the Galaxy Watch4 are less user-friendly than previous TIZEN-powered Gear S and the Galaxy Watch series. But most of the complaints from users are related to the very limited battery life of Watch4. This is a real failure for Samsung, as the old TIZEN-powered models showed record performance relative to their closest competitors. It is impossible to fix this, because, as mentioned above, WearOS 3 requires more powerful hardware and more memory due to poor optimization and low efficiency.

In addition, security experts warn that Android devices (Android Wear/WearOS/WearOS 3) are much more vulnerable to hacker attacks in order to steal personal data and access users' financial transactions.

Above, we provide some comments under one of the Galaxy Watch4 reviews on YouTube, where people, to put it mildly, express their dissatisfaction with the "harmonious collaboration" of Samsung and Google based on the absolutely discredited WearOS 3 platform. Amid growing outrage from users, Samsung and Google have stepped up their campaign to fool the public to deceive potential Galaxy Watch4/Watch4 Classic buyers. The South Korean tech giant continues to pay lavish advertising reviews on various online resources and social networks, while the search engine Google diligently hides negative reviews from independent experts. So, for example, in the Russian-language segment of Google Search, with the introduction of phrases such as "Galaxy Watch 4 проблемы" ("Galaxy Watch 4 problems") nothing but paid advertising reviews will appear. The situation is not much better if the request is entered in English. And only especially persistent Internet users can find something suitable by turning to other search engines or paid applications to find the required content.

Here we may well be talking about the formation of a cartel agreement between an equipment supplier and a software supplier, who fraudulently want to present their product in the best possible light.

All this once again raises the question of monopolizing the search engine market and manipulating public opinion. Google, Facebook, Apple and a number of other IT giants are increasingly accused of their policy of hushing up issues that are disadvantageous to their business. Moreover, recently, Google, Apple, Twitter, Facebook and Telegram have been heavily criticized for overt political censorship during the last US presidential elections and parliamentary elections in Russia. In addition, Apple was accused of gross invasion of privacy when the Cupertino-based corporation said it wanted to censor photos of iPhone users for "child pornography." This caused a flurry of indignation not only in the United States, but also in other regions of the world, since the automatic detection of ordinary family photographs with "naked" can lead many law-abiding citizens to the dock, or, at least, to many months of legal proceedings, exhausting nerves and devastating wallets of the accused. It seems that the public in different countries is starting to think more and more about the unsightly role of IT monopolies in our daily life. It is necessary to curb their appetites as soon as possible and introduce a ban on censorship in search queries, except in cases of clear violations of the legislation regarding violence against people and animals, as well as the propaganda of ideas of terrorism. 

Samsung Galaxy Watch4: проблем становится всё больше

В нашем блоге мы уже неоднократно упоминали о проблемах, с которыми столкнулись многие пользователи "революционных" смарт-часов Samsung Galaxy Watch4 после перехода на самую ужасную операционную платформу WearOS 3 от Google. Помимо того, что из-за плохой оптимизации и "родовых травм" эта "обновлённая" при помощи Samsung и Fitbit операционная система обладает повышенным энергопотреблением, требует более производительного "железа" и несовместима со многими мобильными устройствами (iPhone, Huawei, Honor), в последнее время всё чаще появляются жалобы на отвратительную работу различных приложений.

На форумах и в соцсетях пользователи говорят о множестве различных багов, с которыми столкнулись в ходе эксплуатации новейших носимых устройств Samsung, не получая от производителя внятного ответа о причинах неполадок и способах их устранения. В частности, многие владельцы Galaxy Watch4 указывают на невозможность нормального использования спортивных приложений, которые произвольно "захлопываются" после запуска, либо показывают результаты, весьма далёкие от истинных показателей. Интерфейс и возможности навигации по меню в Galaxy Watch4 стали менее удобными по сравнению с предыдущими сериями Gear S и Galaxy Watch на базе TIZEN OS. Но больше всего нареканий от пользователей связано с весьма ограниченным временем автономной работы Watch4. Это настоящий провал Samsung, поскольку старые TIZEN-модели демонстрировали рекордные показатели относительно ближайших конкурентов. Исправить это невозможно, поскольку, как было сказано выше, WearOS 3 требует более производительного оборудования и большего объёма памяти из-за плохой оптимизации и низкой эффективности. Кроме того, специалисты по безопасности предупреждают, что устройства на базе Android (Android Wear/WearOS/WearOS 3) гораздо более уязвимы в случае хакерских атак с целью кражи персональных данных и доступа к финансовым операциям пользователей.

Ненамного лучше дела обстоят и в случае введения запроса на английском языке типа "Galaxy Watch 4 problems". И лишь только особо настойчивые интернет-пользователи могут найти что-то подходящее благодаря обращению к другим поисковым системам или платным приложениям для обнаружения требуемого контента.

Здесь мы вполне можем говорить о формировании картельного сговора между поставщиком оборудования и поставщиком софта, которые обманным путём хотят представить свой продукт в наилучшем свете.  

Всё это в очередной раз поднимает вопрос о монополизации рынка поисковых систем и манипулировании общественным мнением. Google, Facebook, Apple и целый ряд других IT-гигантов всё чаще обвиняются в политике замалчивания невыгодных для их бизнеса вопросов. Более того, в последнее время Google, Apple, Twitter, Facebook и Telegram были жёстко раскритикованы за неприкрытую политическую цензуру в ходе последних президентских выборов в США и парламентских выборов в России. Кроме того, Apple обвинили в грубом вторжении в частную жизнь, когда корпорация из Купертино заявила о желании цензурировать фотографии пользователей iPhone на предмет "наличия детской порнографии". Это вызвало шквал возмущения не только в США, но и в других регионах мира, поскольку автоматическое выявление обычных семейных фотографий с "голышами" может привести многих законопослушных граждан на скамью подсудимых, или, как минимум, к многомесячным судебным разбирательствам, изматывающих нервы и опустошающих кошельки обвиняемых.

Похоже, что общественность в разных странах начинает всё больше задумываться о неприглядной роли IT-монополий в нашей повседневной жизни. Необходимо как можно быстрее обуздать их аппетиты и ввести запрет на какую-либо ценуру при поисковых запросах, кроме случаев явного нарушения законодательства, касающихся насилия над людьми и животными, а также пропаганды идей терроризма.
