Against the backdrop of strong performance by major divisions of Samsung Electronics, the decline in Samsung Mobile sales looks particularly dramatic

It seems that Samsung Electronics has not made the proper conclusions regarding the policy of the division that develops smartphones, tablets and smartwatches. Against the backdrop of the success of the rest of the business areas, Samsung Mobile is again showing disappointing drops in sales and profits. Moreover, of all the leading smartphone manufacturers, Samsung posted the worst Q3 results compared to last year.

According to the analytical company IDC, despite maintaining its leading position in the global market, shipments of Samsung smartphones decreased from 80.4 to 69.0 million units, that is, by 14.2%. As a result, the share of Android Galaxy smartphones decreased from 22.7% to 20.8%. By contrast, Apple has significantly increased shipments from 41.7 to 50.4 million units, or 20.8%. This led to an increase in Apple's share from 11.7% to 15.2% and returned the American competitor to the 2nd place.

The third position is occupied by the Chinese Xiaomi. This manufacturer reduced shipments in annual terms by 4.6%, but due to the overall reduction in the global market, Xiaomi's share even increased slightly - from 13.1% to 13.4%.

This is followed by the Chinese brands Vivo and Oppo, which occupy 10.1% and 10.0% of the global smartphone market. A year ago, their shares were 8.9% and 8.6%, respectively.

All these figures indicate that Samsung's top management has not been able to draw the right conclusions from the events of recent years. It is clear that the hope for "harmonious synergy" with Google turned out to be a mirage. In the future, Google itself intends to become a major player in the smartphone market, and the current "honeymoon" with a naive bride named Samsung is nothing more than a temporary alliance while Americans accumulate strength and experience for a big breakthrough. By voluntarily accepting the role of "hardware slave" for Google, the Korean tech giant missed the initiative, consigning to oblivion the idea of creating its own operating platform and competitive services. The transition of the Galaxy smartwatch from the well-proven TIZEN platform to the despised WearOS by many users has proved that the elderly top management at Samsung Mobile is concerned with only one thing: to make it to retirement without big shocks and risks.

In the current difficult situation and increasing competition from China, this is a deeply flawed approach. Rather than admitting mistakes and giving way to younger and more ambitious executives, Samsung's two elderly curators, DJ Koh and Rae Tae-moon, do expensive beauty treatments to help them look 10 years younger. In recent years, we have witnessed high-profile failures of Samsung Mobile executives more than once, whether it be the story of the battery fire in the premium Galaxy Note7 smartphones, the scandal over the collaboration with the fake fashion brand Supreme, or the big embarrassment on the eve of the Galaxy Fold presentation. Unfortunately, Samsung Mobile does not draw the right conclusions from what is happening, and we are becoming more and more worried about the future of their mobile and wearable device business, which may not survive until the next decade, repeating the unenviable fate of LG Mobile.

На фоне успехов остальных бизнес-направлений, Samsung Mobile снова демонстрирует разочаровывающее падение продаж и прибыли. Более того, из всех ведущих производителей смартфонов, Samsung показал наихудшие результаты по итогам 3-го квартала относительно прошлогодних показателей.

По данным аналитической компании IDC, несмотря на сохранение лидирующей позиции на глобальном рынке, поставки смартфонов Samsung сократились с 80,4 до 69,0 миллионов штук, то есть на 14,2%. В результате доля Android-смартфонов Galaxy уменьшилась с 22,7% до 20,8%.

Все эти цифры свидетельствуют о том, что топ-менеджменту Samsung так и не удалось сделать правильные выводы из событий последних лет. Совершенно очевидно, что надежда на "гармоничную синергию" с Google оказалась миражом. В будущем Google сам намерен стать крупным игроком на рынке смартфонов и нынешний "медовый месяц" с наивной невестой по имени Samsung является не более чем временным союзом, пока американцы накапливают силы и опыт для большого рывка. Добровольно согласившись на роль "аппаратного раба" для Google, корейский техногигант упустил инициативу, предав забвению идею по созданию собственной операционной платформы и конкурентоспособных сервисов. Переход смарт-часов Galaxy с хорошо зарекомендовавшей себя платформы TIZEN на презираемую многими пользователями WearOS доказал, что престарелый топ-менеджмент в Samsung Mobile озабочен лишь одним: дотянуть до пенсии без больших потрясений и рисков.

В нынешней непростой ситуации и усиливающейся конкуренции со стороны Китая это глубоко ошибочный подход. Вместо того, чтобы признать ошибки и уступить место более молодым и амбициозным руководителям, оба пожилых куратора мобильного подразделения Samsung ДиДжей Ко (DJ Koh) и Ро Дэ-мун (Rae Tae-moon) проходят дорогие косметические процедуры, чтобы выглядеть на 10 лет моложе.

We had to quote this old parable after watching the new "visual show" that the annual Samsung software conference has become due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. The never-ending series of enthusiasm for the "successes and achievements" of the South Korean tech giant in the IT business against the backdrop of spectacular computer graphics will undoubtedly impress infantile viewers. However, this is unlikely to satisfy high-profile application developers and cybersecurity experts.

Recall that back in 2014, Samsung announced a course towards creating a unified operating platform for smart devices that could seamlessly connect smartphones, tablets, smartwatches, cars and various household appliances. This opened up unprecedented prospects for the convenient interaction of all devices connected to the Internet and would minimize the cost of creating software and cybersecurity systems. TIZEN OS was chosen as a single platform, which has incorporated the promising developments of leading players in the IT industry, including Samsung, Intel, Nokia and others.

TIZEN is an open source operating system based on Linux and compares favorably with Google software products for better optimization and cost effectiveness.

TIZEN OS takes up little space on the system disk and is not too demanding on the computing resources of electronic gadgets, so it can provide good performance with limited processor power and a small amount of RAM. Also, one of the most important advantages of TIZEN is the absence of backdoors for unauthorized tracking of user actions.

Such prospects were not at all pleasing to the management of Google, which was strongly afraid of Samsung's gradual refusal to use their solutions based on Android OS and services tied to this platform. As a result of blackmail, threats and promises of numerous preferences in the event of continued use of Android, the top management of Samsung Mobile unit shamefully gave up their positions and proclaimed a course for an "eternal alliance" with Google. Samsung mobile business representatives now invariably mention "harmonious synergy with Google" in every presentation.

It should be noted that they had to make concessions not from a good life. At the end of 2016, a corruption scandal erupted in South Korea around the administration of the then President of the country, Park Geun-he, into the orbit of which the top leaders of the Samsung conglomerate were drawn. Many top managers were under investigation, and some even ended up in prison. At the same time, the chairman of Samsung Group Lee Kun-hee was in a coma after suffering a heart attack. His only male heir, vice chairman of Samsung Electronics Lee Jae-yong, was also under investigation. As a result, the largest South Korean chaebol, which provided about 20% of the country's GDP, was effectively beheaded. Left-wing populists who came to power in 2017 sought to please the outraged "progressive public" and did everything they could to put Lee Jr. behind bars.

These actions by the new leadership of South Korea actually paralyzed Samsung's work, which further undermined the conglomerate's position in a number of key business areas. Historians and economists have yet to assess the damage caused by the actions of the leftists and the so-called "independent prosecutors" who with incredible frenzy destroyed the business of the Lee family.

In May 2017, the last specialized conference of TIZEN developers was held under the auspices of Samsung (TDC 2017), where plans for the implementation of TIZEN OS in smartphones and other electronic devices were announced. However, after Vice Chairman Lee Jae-yong, who personally oversaw the development of the mobile version of TIZEN, was convicted of "bribing" a close friend of the President of South Korea, the policy of Samsung's mobile division underwent radical changes. Taking advantage of the confusion in the ranks of the top management of the Korean conglomerate, Google managed to impose its own rules of the game on the heads of Samsung Mobile, which were frightened by unclear prospects. In the same year, the production of smartphones based on TIZEN OS was discontinued, and in 2021 it was announced that the Samsung Galaxy smartwatch would switch to WearOS 3 (ex-Android Wear), which is unpopular among users.

As a result, the concept of creating a single platform was destroyed, and now Samsung is forced to spend a lot of money to maintain work on several operating systems at once: Android, Android Go, WearOS 3, Chrome OS, Fuchsia from Google, Windows from Microsoft and its own TIZEN. It is hardly possible to call it a wise decision, but for some reason such wastefulness does not bother either investors or journalists covering events in the world of IT technologies at all.

We invited an independent expert Nikolai Iznov, who has long been cooperating with the editors of our information resource, to comment on the situation.

Question: What are your impressions of the presentation of Samsung's key software solutions at the SDC21 virtual event?

N.I.: Unfortunately, my opinion has not changed for the better in any way after the factual refusal of the South Koreans from a single operating platform. We observe disunity in the activities of various divisions of the conglomerate. While Samsung's home appliances, digital signage and TVs continue to run on the TIZEN platform, premium laptops remain with Windows, and mobile and wearable devices use Google's zoo of operating systems. If the "promising" Fuchsia OS from the same Google is added to this "zoo", it will be even more difficult to understand this "diversity". Unlike Apple, which is very successful in operating its devices on various modifications of its own closed platform MacOS, Samsung has abandoned the formula "one brand - one operating platform."

In my opinion, this is absolute nonsense, given the variety of products manufactured under the Samsung brand. And if in the computer business, dominated by Microsoft, this can somehow be understood, in the business of mobile devices, the lack of its own operating platform from the market leader looks absolutely illogical. The truth is, in the eyes of consumers, Android will never become an elite operating platform. Therefore, even the most technically advanced Android smartphone will not be perceived as an exclusive product in a huge herd of manufacturers using the same OS. Samsung cannot understand this in any way. When they claim to be competing with Apple, the experts laugh about it. Samsung can only compete with Chinese manufacturers, since it simply does not make sense to compare the margins of the mobile device business between Samsung and Apple. These are completely different weight categories.  

Question: In the foreword to our conversation, we talked about the difficult situation in which Samsung found itself amid a series of corruption scandals in the highest echelons of political power in South Korea. We believe that concerns about the future of the mobile business have pushed the conglomerate's top management to an alliance with Google. Do you agree with this opinion?

N.I.: A top manager of a high class can be considered only one who does not go with the flow and does not adjust to the current situation, but is able to impose his own rules of the game even in adverse circumstances. Such cases are not uncommon and we all know examples of such successful people as Elon Musk with his business empires PayPal, SpaceX, Tesla, SolarCity and so on. You can also mention Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, Richard Branson (Virgin Group) and many others. At various times, they found themselves in critical situations, but they emerged victorious thanks to the perseverance and strength of the entrepreneurial spirit.

The persons listed above have never given up on achieving their goals and have found ways to successfully realize their even the wildest dreams.

Unfortunately, in the case of Samsung, we see a clear desire to facilitate the task of maintaining the mobile business through a dubious deal with Google, which in the long term does not bode well.

Question: Unlike South Korea, the American authorities do not spread rot on their top businessmen, even if they are guilty of something. For example, when the European Commission convicted Apple of tax evasion, which caused damages in the amount of 14 billion euros, American politicians and the most influential American media strongly defended the Cupertino's corporation. Don't you think that the original rules of the game are completely different? 

N.I.: This is partly true, but it is unlikely to radically change the situation. Someone at Samsung just didn't have the willpower to face adversity. It has long been known that the elderly top management of Samsung is very reluctant to take risks. But, in the current conditions, you cannot build a high-margin business without risk. Following the path of least resistance is a vicious tactic. Among the leading smartphone manufacturers (Apple, Google and until recently Huawei), only Samsung does not have its own operating platform and relies on the mercy of the gentlemen from Mountain View, as well as on the sanctions of the American authorities against Chinese competitors. This means that South Koreans have no compelling reason to fully develop their own services such as Bixby, Samsung Pay, Samsung Health, because you can always "hedge" using Google Assistant, Google Pay, Alexa, Cortana and other third-party software solutions. All this does not stimulate the staff to play well in one team. Combining software solutions of other companies by creating "docking nodes" between them cannot be represented as a full-fledged "own ecosystem".

Question: In South Korean chaebols, unlike Western corporations, a lot depends on the decisions of the head of the big family business. What do you think is the role of the current de facto head of Samsung, Lee Jae-yong, compared to his predecessors?

N.I.: After a series of corruption scandals, imprisonment and the payment of extortionate taxes following the death of Chairman Lee Kun-hee in the fall of 2020, the position of his heir was significantly weakened. The descendants of Lee Sr. were forced to part with a large stake in the conglomerate in order to pay inheritance taxes. In addition, Lee Jr. is still under the scrutiny of the prosecutor's office, which is trying to initiate new criminal and administrative cases against him. Recently, the "crown prince Samsung" was fined for the use of propofol, a potent sedative, due to which the American "king of pop" Michael Jackson died. I do not think that the person taking propofol has the willpower to withstand adverse circumstances. How this affects key business decisions, we can only guess.

Нам пришлось процитировать эту старую притчу после просмотра очередного "визуального шоу", в которое трансформировалась ежегодная конференция разработчиков софта Samsung из-за продолжающейся пандемии COVID-19. Нескончаемая череда восторгов относительно "успехов и достижений" южнокорейского техногиганта в IT-бизнесе на фоне эффектной компьютерной графики, несомненно, произведёт впечатление на инфантильных зрителей. Однако, это вряд ли удовлетворит высококлассных разработчиков приложений и экспертов по кибербезопасности.

Напомним, что ещё в 2014-м году Samsung провозгласил курс на создание единой операционной платформы для смарт-устройств, которая могла бы бесшовно соединить смартфоны, планшеты, смарт-часы, автомобили и различные бытовые приборы. Это открывало невиданные ранее перспективы для удобного взаимодействия всех подключённых к интернету девайсов и позволило бы минимизировать затраты на создание софта и систем кибербезопасности. В качестве единой платформы была выбрана TIZEN OS, которая вобрала в себя многообещающие разработки ведущих игроков IT-индустрии, включая Samsung, Intel, Nokia и других.

TIZEN является открытой операционной системой на базе Linux и выгодно отличается от софтверных продуктов Google лучшей оптимизацией и экономичностью. TIZEN OS занимает немного места на системном диске и не слишком требовательна к вычислительным ресурсам электронных гаджетов, поэтому может обеспечить хорошую производительность при ограниченной мощности процессора и небольшом объёме оперативной памяти. Также одним из важнейших преимуществ TIZEN является отсутствие бэкдоров для несанкционированной слежки за действиями пользователей.

Такие перспективы совсем не радовали руководство Google, которое сильно опасалось постепенного отказа Samsung от использования их решений на базе Android OS и привязанных к этой платформе сервисов. В результате шантажа, угроз и обещаний многочисленных преференций в случае продолжения использования Android, топ-менеджмент подразделения Samsung Mobile позорно сдал свои позиции и провозгласил курс на "вечный союз" с Google. О "гармоничной синергии с Google" представители мобильного бизнеса Samsung теперь неизменно упоминают в каждой своей презентации.

Необходимо отметить, что на уступки им пришлось пойти не от хорошей жизни. В конце 2016 года в Южной Корее разразился коррупционный скандал вокруг администрации тогдашнего президента страны Пак Кын-хэ, в орбиту которого оказались втянуты и высшие руководители конгломерата Samsung. Многие топ-менеджеры находились под следствием, а некоторые даже попали за тюремную решётку. В то же время председатель Samsung Group Ли Кун-хи находился в коматозном состоянии после перенесённого сердечного приступа. Его единственный наследник по мужской линии, вице-председатель Samsung Electronics Ли Джей-ён, также оказался под следствием. В результате, крупнейший южнокорейский чеболь, обеспечивавший около 20% ВВП страны, фактически был обезглавлен. Пришедшие к власти в 2017-м году левые популисты стремились угодить возмущённой "прогрессивной общественности" и сделали всё возможное, чтобы упрятать Ли-младшего за решётку.

Эти действия нового руководства Южной Кореи фактически парализовали работу Samsung, что в дальнейшем подорвало позиции конгломерата в целом ряде ключевых направлений бизнеса. Историкам и экономистам ещё только предстоит оценить весь ущерб, причинённый действиями леваков и так называемых "независимых прокуроров", которые с невероятным остервенением разрушали бизнес семейства Ли.

В мае 2017 года состоялась последняя профильная конференция TIZEN-разработчиков (TDC 2017) под эгидой Samsung, где были оглашены планы по внедрению TIZEN OS в смартфоны и другие электронные устройства. Однако после того, как вице-председатель Ли Джей-ён, который лично курировал проект мобильной версии TIZEN, был осуждён "за дачу взятки" приближённой подруги президента Южной Кореи, политика мобильного подразделения Samsung претерпела радикальные изменения. Воспользовавшись смятением в рядах топ-менеджмента корейского конгломерата, Google удалось навязать свои правила игры напуганным неясными перспективами руководителям подразделения Samsung Mobile. В том же году производство смартфонов на базе TIZEN OS было прекращено, а в 2021-м было объявлено о переходе смарт-часов Samsung Galaxy на непопулярную среди пользователей WearOS 3 (экс-Android Wear).

В результате концепция создания единой платформы была разрушена, и теперь Samsung вынужден тратить большие средства на поддержание работы сразу на нескольких операционных системах: Android, Android Go, WearOS 3, Chrome OS, Fuchsia от Google, Windows от Microsoft и собственной TIZEN. Назвать это мудрым решением вряд ли возможно, однако такое расточительство почему-то совсем не беспокоит ни инвесторов, ни журналистов, освещающих события в мире IT-технологий.

Прокомментировать создавшуюся ситуацию мы пригласили независимого эксперта Николая Изнова, который давно сотрудничает с редакцией нашего информационного ресурса.

Вопрос: Каковы ваши впечатления от презентации ключевых решений Samsung в области софта на виртуальном мероприятии SDC21?

Н.И.: К сожалению, моё мнение никак не изменилось в лучшую сторону после фактического отказа южнокорейцев от единой операционной платформы. Мы наблюдаем разобщённость в деятельности различных подразделений конгломерата. В то время как бытовая техника, цифровые вывески и телевизоры Samsung продолжают работать на платформе TIZEN, премиальные ноутбуки остаются с Windows, а мобильные и носимые устройства используют целый "зоопарк" операционных систем от Google. Если к этому "зоопарку" добавится ещё и "перспективная" Fuchsia OS от той же Google, то разобраться в этом "разнообразии" будет ещё сложнее. В отличие от Apple, которая весьма успешно эксплуатирует свои девайсы на различных модификациях собственной закрытой платформы MacOS, в Samsung отказались от формулы "один брэнд - одна операционная платформа". На мой взгляд, это абсолютный нонсенс, учитывая всё разнообразие продуктов, выпускаемых под маркой Samsung. И если в компьютерном бизнесе, где доминирует Microsoft, это ещё как-то можно понять, то в бизнесе мобильных устройств отсутствие собственной операционной платформы у лидера рынка выглядит абсолютно нелогично. Правда такова, что в глазах потребителей Android никогда не станет элитарной операционной платформой. Поэтому даже самый технически продвинутый Android-смартфон не будет восприниматься как эксклюзивный продукт в огромном стаде производителей, использующих одну и ту же ОС. Этого в Samsung никак не могут понять. Когда они заявляют, что конкурируют с Apple, у экспертов это вызывает гомерический смех. Samsung может конкурировать только с китайскими производителями, так как сравнивать маржинальность бизнеса мобильных устройств у Samsung и Apple просто не имеет смысла. Это абсолютно разные весовые категории.     

Вопрос: В предисловии к нашей беседе мы рассказали о той непростой ситуации, в которой Samsung оказался на фоне череды коррупционных скандалов в высших эшелонах политической власти Южной Кореи. Мы полагаем, что опасение за будущее мобильного бизнеса подтолкнуло топ-менеджмент конгломерата к союзу с Google. Разделяете ли вы это мнение?

Н.И.: Топ-менеджером высокого класса можно считать лишь того, кто не плывёт по течению и не подстраивается под сиюминутную ситуацию, а умеет навязывать собственные правила игры даже в неблагоприятных обстоятельствах. Подобные случаи не редкость и все мы знаем примеры таких успешных людей как Илон Маск с его бизнес-империями PayPal, SpaceX, Tesla, SolarCity и так далее. Можно также упомянуть основателя Amazon Джеффа Безоса, Ричарда Брэнсона (Virgin Group) и многих других. В разное время они попадали в критические ситуации, но выходили победителями благодаря упорству и силе предпринимательского духа.

Перечисленные выше персоны никогда не отказывались от достижения поставленной цели и находили способы успешно реализовывать свои даже самые смелые мечты.

К сожалению, в случае с Samsung мы видим явное желание облегчить задачу по сохранению мобильного бизнеса путём сомнительной сделки с Google, которая в перспективе не сулит ничего хорошего.

Вопрос: В отличие от Южной Кореи, американские власти не гнобят своих топ-бизнесменов, даже если они в чём-то провинились. Например, когда Еврокомиссия уличила Apple в уклонении от налогов, в результате чего чего был нанесён ущерб в размере 14-ти миллиардов евро, американские политики и наиболее влиятельные американские медиа решительно встали на защиту корпорации из Купертино. Не кажется ли вам, что исходные правила игры совершенно разные?

Н.И.: Отчасти это так, но вряд ли радикально меняет ситуацию. Просто кому-то в Samsung не хватило силы воли противостоять неблагоприятным обстоятельствам. Давно известно, что великовозрастный топ-менеджмент Samsung очень не любит рисковать. Но, в нынешних условиях, без риска высокомаржинальный бизнес не построишь. Следовать по пути наименьшего сопротивления - это порочная тактика. Среди ведущих производителей смартфонов (Apple, Google и до недавнего времени Huawei), только Samsung не имеет собственной операционной платформы и уповает на милость господ из Маунтин-Вью, а также на санкционные меры американских властей в отношении китайских конкурентов. Это означает, что у южнокорейцев нет веских причин в полную силу развивать собственные сервисы типа Bixby, Samsung Pay, Samsung Health, поскольку всегда можно "подстраховаться" с помощью Google Assistant, Google Pay, Alexa, Cortana и прочих сторонних программных решений. The sad truth about Android that Googlefans prefer to ignore

As you know, Russia is famous not only for its hackers, but also for highly qualified cybersecurity specialists who are contacted by clients from different countries, including representatives of leading IT corporations. Therefore, it would be very useful for all users of computers, as well as mobile and wearable gadgets to familiarize themselves with the video program dedicated to the problems of user data safety. The film "Nothing Personal" was recently published on the popular YouTube channel "Редакция" ("Editoral office"), which employs professional journalists who have left federal television channels because of the censorship prevailing there and pathological dependence on the dictates of the Kremlin special services.

IT experts working in the field of cybersecurity shared their views on how brazenly attackers, as well as owners of mobile operating systems and application developers, are invading our privacy. According to experts, currently there are practically no means to guarantee privacy in the Internet space. However, there are various methods of protection that make it possible to greatly complicate the task of stealing personal data by hackers or special services of repressive regimes.

In addition to two-factor authentication and protecting user data with complex passwords, experts strongly recommend that smartphone owners do not allow handsets to be passed into the wrong hands, even for a short time. In addition, before you start entering your password on your phone in a public place, take a close look and make sure that no strangers are spying on you and that a security camera is not aimed at you. When it came to discussing mobile operating systems, the sad truth was revealed for many Android smartphone users: this brainchild of Google is a "leaky sieve" and a real paradise for cybercriminals. However, our blog has been talking about this throughout the entire period of its existence.

According to IT experts, if expensive smartphones from Samsung (Galaxy) and Google (Pixel) have additional built-in chips for data encryption, then cheap Chinese crafts generally lack any serious privacy protection tools. Android is considered the most vulnerable operating system, since at the time of its creation there were no effective ways to ensure the safety of users of mobile devices. However, such a sad verdict about Android on the part of IT specialists, it seems, does not really confuse manufacturers of smartphones, smart watches and various set-top boxes, as well as ordinary users. The latter are generally inclined to think that they are not of any interest to hackers and special services due to their "insignificance". However, this is a completely wrong approach. Hackers will always find something to steal, even from a poor person. For example, in Russia, some are deprived of their own apartments, and not in all cases they manage to prove the fact of cyber fraud in court.

As for the manufacturers, we have repeatedly mentioned the fatal mistake of such a tech giant as Samsung, which decided to link its fate with Google.

Ditching TIZEN's own operating system and switching to Android Wear (now called WearOS 3) in wearables does not bode well for their owners in terms of safety. Moreover, Android is an incredibly power hungry and poorly optimized platform that requires much more powerful computing resources than the aforementioned TIZEN. For those who still do not understand this, we advise you to get ready to spend extra money for "Android-hardware" and sacrifice your security.

Как известно, Россия славится не только своими хакерами, но и высококвалифицированными специалистами по кибербезопаности, к которым обращаются клиенты из разных стран, в том числе представители ведущих IT-корпораций. Поэтому всем пользователям компьютеров, а также мобильных и носимых гаджетов было бы весьма полезно ознакомиться с видеопрограммой, посвящённой проблемам сохранности пользовательских данных. Фильм "Ничего личного" был недавно опубликован на популярном YouTube-канале "Редакция", где работают профессиональные журналисты, покинувшие федеральные телеканалы из-за царящей там цензуры и патологической зависимости от диктата кремлёвских спецслужб.

IT-эксперты, работающие в области кибербезопасности, поделились своими мнениями о том, насколько нагло злоумышленники, а также владельцы мобильных операционных систем и разработчики приложений вторгаются в нашу личную жизнь. По словам специалистов, в настоящее время практически не существует средств, гарантирующих приватность в интернет-пространстве. Однако существуют различные способы защиты, позволяющие сильно осложнить задачу по краже персональных данных хакерами или спецслужбами репрессивных режимов.

Помимо двухфакторной авторизации и защиты пользовательских данных сложными паролями, эксперты настоятельно рекомендуют владельцам смартфонов не допускать передачи трубок в чужие руки даже на короткое время. Кроме того, прежде чем вы начнёте вводить свой пароль на телефоне в публичном месте, внимательно осмотритесь и убедитесь в том, что за вами не подглядывают посторонние люди и на вас не нацелена камера слежения.

Когда дело дошло до обсуждения мобильных операционных систем, то для многих пользователей Android-смартфонов открылась печальная правда: это детище Google является "дырявым решетом" и настоящим раем для киберпреступников. Впрочем, в нашем информационном блоге об этом говорилось на протяжении всего периода его существования.

По словам IT-экспертов, если дорогие смартфоны от Samsung и Google имеют дополнительные встроенные чипы для шифрования данных, то в дешёвых китайских поделках вообще отсутствуют какие-либо серьёзные средства по защите приватности. На сегодняшний день Android считается наиболее уязвимой операционной системой, поскольку в период её создания вообще не были заложены сколь-нибудь надёжные способы обеспечения безопасности пользователей мобильных устройств.

Однако столь печальный приговор Android со стороны IT-специалистов, похоже, не очень смущает производителей смартфонов, смарт-часов и различных ТВ-приставок, равно как и рядовых пользователей. Последние вообще склонны думать, что не представляют какого-либо интереса для хакеров и спецслужб в силу "ничтожности своей персоны". Однако это совершенно ошибочный подход, поскольку хакеры всегда найдут что украсть, даже у небогатого человека. Например, в России некоторые лишаются собственных квартир и далеко не во всех случаях им удаётся доказать факт кибермошенничества в суде.

Что касается производителей, то мы неоднократно упоминали о роковой ошибке такого техногиганта как Samsung, который решил связать свою судьбу с Google. Отказ от собственной операционной системы TIZEN и переход на Android Wear (теперь это называется WearOS 3) в носимых устройствах не сулит ничего хорошего их владельцам в плане безопасности. Более того, Android является невероятно прожорливой и плохо оптимизированной платформой, которая требует куда более мощных вычислительных ресурсов, чем упомянутая выше TIZEN. Для тех, кто этого до сих пор не понял, советуем приготовиться тратить дополнительные деньги за "Android-железо" и жертвовать своей безопасностью. Как говорится, "приятно подавиться".

Samsung is madly happy with the "harmonious synergy" with Google. However, users of Galaxy smartphones and Galaxy Watch4 do not share this optimism.

Some time ago, Samsung agreed to kill its own operating platform, TIZEN, in exchange for a "lucky chance" to become the hardware appendage of Google's IT monster. The south korean manufacturer has received tasty orders for the supply of semiconductors, displays and processors to american "partners" from Mountain View. However, the victims of this "super-profitable for shareholders" deal were the owners of the latest generation of smartphones and Galaxy smartwatches. In recent days, Internet resources and forums dedicated to mobile gadgets are full of messages about a growing avalanche of problems associated with gross software bugs on Android devices. The operating system from Google, which Samsung has been imposing on users of its mobile gadgets for many years, is causing more and more complaints for poor performance and leakage of personal data. For example, owners of Galaxy A and Galaxy M smartphones complain of frequent freezes followed by automatic reboots, which is extremely annoying. The problematic models include the Galaxy M30s, M31/M31s, Galaxy A50/50s and Galaxy A51, which became one of the best-selling smartphones of 2020.

The problem covering an increasing number of users has been noted for more than 2 months, but Samsung still has not made any official statements and has not explained the cause of the breakdowns. In their posts, many owners of the above smartphones complain that, in response to their requests, the manufacturer advises to visit a service center to replace the motherboard. Moreover, the repair is carried out at the expense of the owner of the device. Replacing the board will cost about 100 euros. Experts say that the motherboard failure is most likely due to a bug in the Android OS code and affects phones with proprietary Exynos 9610 and Exynos 9611 chipsets. Attempts to use typical solutions, such as resetting the device to factory settings, do not fix the problem. If Samsung does not respond to claims from its customers in the near time, the option of filing class actions and lengthy legal proceedings is not excluded.

Owners of the most expensive modifications of the latest Samsung's Galaxy Watch4 LTE and Galaxy Watch4 Classic LTE also faced no less serious problems. After Samsung and Google solemnly announced the transition of Galaxy smartwatches to the unpopular WearOS 3 platform (ex-Android Wear), the joy of this step among the googlefans gave way to disappointment. For example, in the discussion thread notebookchat.com, almost all messages from "happy owners" of Watch4 contain sharp criticism for software bugs that cause the watch to overheat and lose its charge within a few hours if the 4G/LTE modem is activated. The indignation of users of the most expensive Samsung wearable devices is understandable, because they paid a considerable amount precisely for the opportunity to use their gadgets without being tied to a smartphone. In some cases, the Galaxy Wath4 overheats so much that wearers have to remove them from their wrist to avoid scalding. Nothing like this was observed in previous generations of Samsung's TIZEN-powered smartwatches. Every day, the number of complaints about this problem is only growing, as evidenced by posts on the Reddit portal and the Samsung Community forum.

In response to a request from the editors of the notebookcheck.com portal, Samsung replied that "they are collecting statistics to analyze a possible problem." However, the question is, why are such problems in principle possible in top-end devices on WearOS 3, which was presented to us as a "revolution in the world of wearable gadgets"?

Another critical article concerning the big problems due to the transition from the TIZEN platform to WearOS appeared on the phoneswiki.com portal, and a little earlier, the russian tech reviewer Eldar Murtazin also expressed dissatisfaction with this step by Samsung in his Galaxy Watch4 review.

In pursuit of the golden calf in order to satisfy the growing appetite of shareholders by surrendering their positions in the software direction in favor of Google, Samsung Mobile division has clearly forgotten about the interests of ordinary users, who are in fact the true shareholders of the south korean tech giant. If the ranks of supporters of the Samsung brand are thinning, then the shareholders are unlikely to be eager to keep their assets in a problem place, is not it?

В последние дни интернет-ресурсы и форумы, посвящённые мобильным гаджетам, пестрят сообщениями о растущей лавине проблем, связанных с грубыми программными ошибками на Android-устройствах. Операционная система от Google, которую Samsung уже долгие годы навязывает пользователям своих мобильных гаджетов, вызывает всё больше нареканий за плохую работу и утечку персональных данных к злоумышленникам. Например, владельцы смартфонов линеек Galaxy A и Galaxy M жалуются на частые "зависания" с последующей автоматической перезагрузкой, что вызывает крайнее раздражение. Среди проблемных моделей числятся Galaxy M30s, M31/M31s, Galaxy A50/50s и Galaxy A51, который стал одним из самых продаваемых смартфонов 2020 года.

Охватывающая всё большее количество пользователей проблема отмечается уже на протяжении более 2-х месяцев, однако Samsung до сих пор не сделал никаких официальных заявлений и не объяснил причину неполадок. В своих постах многие владельцы указанных выше смартфонов сетуют, что в ответ на их обращения производитель советует посетить сервисный центр для замены материнской платы. Причём ремонт производится за счёт владельца устройства. Замена платы обойдётся примерно в 100 евро. Эксперты говорят, что выход материнских плат из строя, скорее всего, происходит из-за ошибки в коде Android OS и затрагивает телефоны с фирменными чипсетами Exynos 9610 и Exynos 9611. Попытки использовать типовые решения, вроде сброса устройства до заводских настроек, не устраняют проблему. Если Samsung в ближайшее время не отреагирует на претензии своих клиентов, не исключается вариант подачи коллективных исков и длительных судебных разбирательств.

С не менее серьёзными проблемами столкнулись также владельцы самых дорогих модификаций новейших смарт-часов Samsung Galaxy Watch4 LTE и Galaxy Watch4 Classic LTE. После того, как Samsung и Google торжественно объявили о переходе смарт-часов Galaxy на непопулярную платформу WearOS 3 (экс-Android Wear), радость по этому поводу среди "гуглофанов" сменилась разочарованием. Например, в дискуссионной ветке notebookchat.com, почти все сообщения от "счастливых владельцев" Watch4 содержат резкую критику за "программные косяки", из-за которых часы сильно перегреваются и теряют заряд в течение нескольких часов в случае активации модема 4G/LTE. Возмущение пользователей самых дорогих носимых устройств Samsung можно понять, ведь они заплатили немалую сумму именно за возможность использовать свои гаджеты без жёсткой привязки к смартфону. В некоторых случаях перегрев Galaxy Wath4 настолько сильный, что владельцам приходится снимать их со своего запястья, чтобы избежать ожога. Ничего подобного в предыдущих поколениях смарт-часов Samsung на TIZEN OS не наблюдалось. С каждым днём количество жалоб на эту проблему только растёт, о чём также свидетельствуют сообщения на портале Reddit и форуме Samsung Community.

В ответ на запрос редакции портала notebookcheck.com в Samsung ответили, что "собирают статистику для анализа возможной проблемы". Однако вопрос в том, почему такие проблемы в принципе возможны в топовых устройствах на WearOS 3, которую нам преподносили как "революцию в мире носимых гаджетов"?

Очередная разгромная статья, касающаяся больших проблем из-за перехода с платформы TIZEN на WearOS появилась на портале phoneswiki.com, а чуть ранее российский технообозреватель Эльдар Муртазин также выразил недовольство таким шагом Samsung в своём обзоре Galaxy Watch4. 

Погнавшись за золотым тельцом с целью удовлетворения растущих аппетитов акционеров за счёт сдачи своих позиций на софтверном направлении в пользу Google, в Samsung Mobile явно позабыли об интересах обычных пользователей, которые на самом деле являются истинными акционерами южнокорейского техногиганта. Ведь если ряды сторонников марки Samsung будут редеть, то вряд ли акционеры будут гореть желанием держать свои активы в проблемном месте, не правда ли?

Long before the release of the new Galaxy Watch4, laudatory reviews about the future novelty appeared on the Internet. As if on cue, completely different Internet portals on all continents began to write that "they look forward to the fruits of close cooperation between Samsung and Google" in the field of mobile gadgets and wearable devices. Already in advance they were sure that this venture was doomed to success and did not show, with rare exceptions, even a shadow of doubt. What can we say about the rising wave of excitement around Watch4, when the first copies fell into the hands of paid "testers". In order to give publications the appearance of objectivity, these "journalists" go to the trick, pointing out "individual shortcomings", but the final verdict is the same for all: "The shortcomings are insignificant against the background of a whole heap of advantages."

For example, the author of the publication on the AndroidCentral portal states that he has already "made a pre-order" for the new product. The American portal The Verge in its "review" article calls the Galaxy Watch4 "the best watch for owners of Android smartphones" and gives this gadget 7 points out of 10 possible. "It's not Apple Watch yet, but it's already something close," concludes The Verge.

However, experts, not burdened with commercial obligations to Samsung and Google, are much less optimistic. Unlike loyal reviewers who live off serving the interests of large brands, they say that they would not have given Watch4 more than 5 points, while they boldly put 8 or even 9 points for previous devices based on TIZEN OS. We will not repeat all the problematic aspects of the next "collaboration" between Samsung and Google, since you can read about it in our previous publications, but we will only mention the main thing: without its own operating platform and a set of services, none of the major electronics manufacturers can be considered a full-fledged player, and even less have the right to claim that they have "their own ecosystem." Google-focused manufacturers and lazy app developers are killing the notion of "fair competition" that is driving the consumer electronics sector into a stagnant quagmire.

Again, let's note the actions of Google in promoting its interests by manipulating its search engine.

Those articles in the Internet media, where there was no enthusiastic yelling about the Galaxy Watch4, quickly disappeared from the field of view of the Google search engine. After it became known about a lot of "inconvenient facts", all the results of queries like "Galaxy Watch4 problems" almost always led us to laudatory reviews and frankly advertising publications.

Only with a lot of effort and spending a fair amount of time can you get to more or less objective sources in order to get an idea of the true state of affairs.

В результате ютюберы становятся долларовыми миллионерами, а компании-производители извлекают немалую прибыль из раздутого на пустом месте ажиотажа.

Ещё задолго до выхода новых смарт-часов Galaxy Watch4 на просторах интернета появились хвалебные отзывы о будущей новинке. Как по команде, совершенно разные интернет-порталы на всех континентах стали писать, что "с нетерпением ожидают плодов тесного сотрудничества Samsung и Google" на ниве мобильных гаджетов и носимых устройств. Уже заранее они были уверены, что эта затея обречена на успех и не выказывали, за редким исключением, даже тени сомнений. Что уж говорить о поднявшейся волне ажиотажа вокруг Watch4, когда первые экземпляры попали в руки проплаченных "тестировщиков". Дабы придать публикациям видимость объективности, эти "журналисты" идут на хитрость, указывая на "отдельные недостатки", но конечный вердикт у всех одинаков: "Недостатки незначительны на фоне целого вороха преимуществ". Так, например, автор публикации на портале AndroidCentral заявляет, что уже "сделал предзаказ" на новинку. Американский портал The Verge в своей обзорной статье называет Galaxy Watch4 "лучшими часами для владельцев Android-смартфонов" и ставит этому гаджету 7 баллов из 10 возможных. "Это ещё не Apple Watch, но уже что-то близкое", - резюмирует The Verge.

Однако эксперты, не обременённые коммерческими обязательствами перед Samsung и Google, гораздо менее оптимистичны. Ориентированные на Google производители и обленившиеся разработчики приложений убивают такое понятие как "честная конкуренция", что ведёт сектор потребительских электронных устройств в застойное болото.    

Опять же отметим действия Google в продвижении своих интересов посредством манипулирования своей поисковой системой. Те статьи в интернет-СМИ, где не просматривалось восторженных воплей относительно Galaxy Watch4, быстро исчезали из поля зрения поисковика Google. После того, как стало известно о множестве "неудобных фактов", все результаты запросов типа "Galaxy Watch4 problems" почти всегда выводили нас на хвалебные обзоры и откровенно рекламные публикации.

Лишь приложив немало усилий и потратив изрядное количество времени, вы можете добраться до более-менее объективных источников, чтобы составить представление об истинном положении дел.

2 days before the official presentation, almost all information about new mobile and wearable devices from Samsung has leaked to the Web. Nothing fundamentally new is foreseen.

By tradition, long before the next Galaxy Unpacked event, the so-called "independent informants" have already told on social networks about everything that can be expected from the South Korean manufacturer. We have reported on the new "sensational" smart watches more than once, so we will not dwell on this in detail. We only note that the specifications of the Galaxy Watch 4 (from $250) and Galaxy Watch 4 Classic (from $370) have been finally confirmed. The datasheet clearly indicates the use of Google's WearOS operating system. No mention of the proprietary TIZEN OS (or the WearOS/TIZEN hybrid structure) has been found. The only "innovation" will be the Samsung One UI software shell, similar to the one that has long been used in Android Galaxy smartphones. Vague promises of "better integration with smartphones" and "increased application access" are offered as a "revolutionary breakthrough". Considering that there were no problems with the previous TIZEN-based models with either one or the other, it remains only to shrug your shoulders and wonder about the increased price of this "revolution from the brotherly alliance of Samsung and Google".

The upcoming virtual event Galaxy Unpacked 2021 Part 2 is also expected to showcase new wireless headphones and smartphones.

The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 2, announced in 2020, began selling in the European market at prices ranging from € 1.949 to € 2.049, depending on the country. A new generation smartphone (Fold 3) can be bought for about the same money. The 256GB version will cost € 2,010, while the 512GB version will cost € 2,100.

The amount of RAM will be 12GB. The manufacturer promises improved protection of new models from moisture and dust.

But the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 3 will be much cheaper than the Galaxy Z Flip 5G, the world's first Snapdragon 865+ smartphone. The upcoming novelty will cost "only" 1.030 euros in a modification with 128GB of permanent memory, and the price of a variant with a 256GB drive will be 1.110 euros. In both cases, 8GB of RAM will be provided. For comparison, last year's model is now on sale in Europe for 1.349 euros.

The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3 and Galaxy Z Flip 3 will hit the market with One UI 4.0 based on the Android 11 operating system.

In addition to smartphones, Samsung is also announcing the new Galaxy Buds 2 TWS earbuds for around € 170. The Galaxy Buds 2 are credited with active noise canceling, improved sound, Bluetooth 5.0, wireless charging support, and 61 mAh batteries in each earbud and 472 mAh in the case.
