Millennials and Gen Z want more social equality and are concerned about the planet's environmental health (Global Survey)
More than 70% of millennials and members of Generation Z in South Korea believe that wealth and income are distributed unequally throughout society, a survey showed on June 22.
Millennials are people born between 1983 and 1994, and members of Generation Z were born between 1995 and 2003.
The survey, released by Deloitte Anjin, showed that some 73% of millennials and 76% of Gen Zers in Korea recognized wealth and income inequality as a major concern. Of the global millennials, 69% gave the same answer and so did 66 percent of the global Gen Zers.
While millennials and Gen Zers in Korea pointed to laws, regulations and policies that maintain a system favoring business and the wealthy as key factors behind inequality, they maintained a conservative stance toward government intervention in resolving inequality, Deloitte Anjin said.
“Korean millennials and Gen Z’s support of drafting of bills that could close the gap between employees and employers, levy heavier tax on the wealthy, protect minimum wage and other forms of government intervention were noticeably lackluster compared with global respondents,” the report said.
Besides income inequality, Korean millennials and Gen Zers mentioned health issues tied to the COVID-19 pandemic, economic growth and jobs as their main concerns. But while millennials here prioritized climate change over job and career concerns, Gen Zers expressed more worries about employment. Some 30% of Gen Zers picked career as a major issue, while 25% of millennials did.
The Korean respondents projected a rosier economic outlook for the near future compared with last year, despite expressing significant concerns about personal welfare. Some 22% of millennials said the economy would improve “in the next 12 months” compared with 13% last year, while 21% of Gen Z responded the same way compared with 14% last year.
The percentage of global millennials who said the economy would improve declined by 1% point on-year this year to 27%.
“In past years, the Millennial Survey has revealed that these younger generations want to work for companies with a purpose beyond profit - companies that share their values - and that they feel more empowered to make a difference as part of organizations,” the global survey released in English by Deloitte said.
“Knowing that, business leaders should actively help millennials and Gen Zs channel their determination and focus their efforts to create the future they seek - a future that’s more responsible regarding the planet, more empathetic toward populations around the world, and more supportive of equality.”
The survey focused on the views of Korean millennials and Gen Zers, extracting data from its parent group’s study on global millennials and Gen Z.
The global survey involved 22,928 people in 45 nations, including Korea. Of the total, 502 were Korean. The survey was conducted Feb. 8-18.

Why Samsung's Foundry business Can't Catch up with TSMC?
Industry experts say that Samsung Electronics should address three key issues of investment, know-how and trust. In other words, TSMC is far ahead of Samsung Electronics in all of these aspects. This is why Samsung Electronics' super-gap technology in memory semiconductors hardly works in the foundry sector.
TSMC’ annual investment is about triple that of Samsung’s in the foundry sector. Samsung’s investment in the semiconductor sector as a whole is larger than that of TSMC, but Samsung allocates a small part of its investment to the foundry sector. For Samsung, it has to narrow its gap with TSMC in the foundry sector while at the same time maintaining a super gap in the memory semiconductor market.
The gap in investment volume leads to a in know-how. TSMC started mass-producing 5-nm products this year. It is building a 3-nm facility in Taiwan with the goal of entering mass-production in 2022. It is also conducting research and development on a 2-nm process, which is regarded as the limit of the current semiconductor manufacturing technology, with the goal of mass-producing products in 2024.
Although Samsung Electronics also announced its success in mass-producing 5-nm products in 2021, industry analysts say that Samsung’s yield is too low to be seen as a success in volume production. In the foundry market, it is extremely important to supply products to customers such as Apple and Qualcomm on time. No companies are placing orders for 5-nm products with Samsung, as its mass-production capabilities have not been fully verified yet.
Samsung Foundry also has a more fundamental weakness in terms of earning trust with corporate customers. That is to say, Samsung has the System LSI Business Department in charge of designing and selling application processors (APs) for smartphones. It is natural for customers who have to hand over their semiconductor designs to foundry companies to prefer TSMC to Samsung Electronics. This is because TSMC engages in the foundry business only, so corporate customers do not need to worry about information leaks.
This is why rumors have been steadily going around that Samsung Electronics will separate its foundry business. However, if Samsung spins off its foundry business, it will not be able to make investment in the spun-off foundry company with money earned from its memory business. In other words, the spin-off idea can hardly be chosen until its foundry business secures a capacity to get on its feet.
Industry insiders are suggesting setting up a system semiconductor ecosystem as an alternative. This means Samsung helping Korean companies grow in various fields such as fabless, foundry, and back process (packaging). Samsung realized the merit of this approach two to three years ago and has since been strengthening cooperation with upstream and downstream companies.
Samsung and Hyundai are giving new impetus to their collaboration in the auto business
Samsung Electronics and Hyundai Motor Co. have teamed up to solve the global automotive semiconductor shortage. The two companies are expected to make efforts to internalize the supply chain of core automotive semiconductors.
The two companies signed an agreement on May 13 with the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy, the Korea Automotive Technology Institute and the Korea Electronics Technology Institute for cooperation in the automotive semiconductor field.
Through technical cooperation, the two companies will develop next-generation power semiconductors, image sensors, battery management chips, and application processors (APs) for car infotainment systems. They are expected to push for mid- to long-term joint technology development in APs for self-driving cars, AI accelerators and telecommunication processors for future vehicles.
In line with this, the Korean government is planning to build a system to enhance Korean industry’s self-reliance in the whole automotive semiconductor cycle.
Although Korea is the world's number one memory semiconductor powerhouse, the nation accounts for only 2 percent of the world automotive semiconductor market. Semiconductors for vehicles are usually produced using 8-inch wafers, but Samsung Electronics is focusing on high-performance products that are based on 12-inch wafers. Automotive semiconductors are less profitable compared to mobile semiconductors.
For this reason, cooperation between Samsung Electronics and Hyundai Motor is unlikely to produce some tangible positive results in a short period of time. However, semiconductor industry watchers predict that the two companies will be able to create a new market for system semiconductors together as the automobile market is shifting to electric vehicles and autonomous vehicles.

The New York Times: Biden Expands Trump-Era Ban on Investment in Chinese Firms Linked to Military
The new order includes firms engaged in making and deploying the surveillance technology used against Muslim minorities and dissidents around the globe.
President Biden issued a new executive order on Thursday barring Americans from investing in Chinese firms that are linked to the country’s military or that sell surveillance technology used to repress dissent or religious minorities, both inside and outside China.
The new order expands on an earlier, Trump-era blacklist and brings to 59 the total number of Chinese firms banned from U.S. investment. The move intensifies a commercial and ideological battle between Beijing and Washington, one that Mr. Biden has termed the struggle between “autocracy and democracy.”
It comes at a moment when China is both ramping up its ability to spy on its nearly 1.4 billion people — using a mix of facial-recognition cameras and software, phone-scanners and a range of other tools — and exporting that technology to nations around the world. The technology is often sold abroad as part of a package of communications equipment provided by companies like Huawei, or as part of China’s Belt and Road initiative, which aims to expand the country’s trade ties.
China has used surveillance technology against Muslim minorities like the Uighurs and dissidents in Hong Kong and in the Chinese diaspora around the globe.
Mr. Biden’s aides said the move grew from a new American commitment not to facilitate Chinese repression and human rights abuses.
China regularly decries such moves as interference in its domestic affairs, and in the past has sought to retaliate with bans on American companies, leading to fears of broad economic decoupling between the world’s two largest economies. And the Chinese are likely to argue that the United States and other countries use some of the same technologies and techniques to track terrorists and drug lords.
It is unclear how effective Mr. Biden’s order will be at stopping the spread of Chinese espionage technology. To make the investment ban truly effective, he would have to persuade the European allies Japan and South Korea, among others, to join in the effort.
That effort may begin next week, when Mr. Biden goes on his first foreign trip as president to the Group of 7 summit, followed by a meeting of NATO allies. China is expected to be a major subject. In preparations for the meeting, he is already running into resistance from nations that, like Germany and South Korea, rely on China as a big export market for luxury cars, software and electronics.
As described by senior administration officials, the new order will prohibit American companies and those based in the United States from investing in the stock of Chinese companies on the blacklist or in debt issued by those firms. The ban will extend to investments in funds that, in turn, invest in those companies. Those funds will have a year to unwind their investments before facing penalties.
The new executive order is another case in which the Biden administration is building on a Trump-era China initiative. Mr. Biden has also kept tariffs on Chinese goods in place, as leverage in negotiations. In this case, Biden administration officials say they were acting partly to fix the executive order issued by President Donald J. Trump last November, which has been challenged, successfully, in American courts because it did not clearly lay out the factual basis for banning investments in Chinese firms linked to the defense industry.
The list of Chinese firms affected by the new order was put together by the Treasury Department, which has deep experience in issuing sanctions, rather than by the Pentagon. That is partly an effort to make clear the reasons for each company’s designations, officials say, in the hope that the bans will hold up in court.
Administration officials say the number of Chinese firms targeted by the ban is likely to grow.
The order targets several giants of the Chinese telecommunications industry, some of which still operate inside the United States or partner with American companies. It is a signal that scrutiny of Chinese influence over the global technology space has not abated in Washington despite the shift to Democratic control in the White House.
Among the firms Mr. Biden listed on Thursday was Huawei, China’s national champion in telecommunications, and the centerpiece of its effort to export 5G networks around the world. For years the Trump administration tried to marginalize the company, banning the sale of most of its technologies inside the U.S., urging allies to reject them, and attempting to starve the firms of needed chips. For a while, Mike Pompeo, the former secretary of state, and other American officials were threatening to bar allies from sharing in American intelligence briefings if they used Huawei in their networks. That backfired, but the allies have increasingly come to limit Huawei’s role. Huawei is not publicly held, however, so the order would essentially ban Americans from helping to underwrite its debt offerings.
Huawei had no comment on Thursday’s ban.
The order also listed three carriers — China Unicom, China Telecom, and China Mobile — that have been increasingly in the cross hairs of American lawmakers and regulators. In 2019, lawmakers urged the Federal Communications Commission to review China Unicom’s and China Telecom’s licenses to operate in the United States. The agency moved in March to consider restricting China Unicom’s operations. All have been under scrutiny over whether they are diverting phone or internet traffic back to China, for the benefit of Chinese intelligence services.
China Telecom declined to comment on the new order.
In 2019, the Federal Communications Commission also blocked China Mobile’s application to support calls between the United States and other countries, citing risks that the Chinese government could use its control over the company to spy on Americans’ calls.
But the issue is complicated by the firms’ ties to American companies. China Mobile has been supporting iPhones in China since 2014, a deal that was crucial to Apple’s growth in the Chinese market. “Apple has enormous respect for China Mobile and we are excited to begin working together,” Apple’s chief executive, Tim Cook, said in a news release. At the time, China Mobile was the world’s largest cellular network, with 763 million customers.
China Mobile did not respond to a request for comment on the new order, nor did China Unicom.
Also banned was investment in the Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corporation, China’s largest semiconductor manufacturer. The company is a key supplier to the Chinese military, but has struggled to manufacture the most advanced chips.
China Telecom
China Mobile также не ответила на просьбу The New York Times прокомментировать новый указ, равно как и China Unicom.
