Samsung Display sold Suzhou LCD plant to CSOT CSOT, a panel unit of Chinese home appliance maker TCL, acquired Samsung Display’s Suzhou LCD plant for $1.08 billion, making China the producer of half the world’s large LCDs, industry sources said Sunday. According to the sources, CSOT signed a deal with Samsung Display to acquire 60% of the Suzhou plant for $1.08 billion. The remaining 10% will be owned by the parent company, TCL, and 30% by the Suzhou city government. The Suzhou plant was responsible for 27% of Samsung Display’s LCD production. As a result, CSOT will have three 8.5-generation production lines and one 11th generation line. It is planning to start operating its 11th generation LCD production lines from early next year. Samsung Display also invested $739 million to gain a 12.33% stake in TCL-related shares. Recall that Samsung Display's refusal from further production of LCD screens is due to a large-scale transition to the release of the latest displays based on a fundamentally different technology. As you know, Samsung has invested 11 billion dollars to master the production of QD-displays using the so-called "quantum grid", which provides superiority over traditional LCD and OLED screens.

At 6,400 megabits per second (Mb/s), the new LPDDR5 is about 16 percent faster than the 12Gb LPDDR5 (5,500Mb/s) found in most of today’s flagship mobile devices. When made into a 16GB package, the LPDDR5 can transfer about 10 5GB-sized full-HD movies, or 51.2GB of data, in one second. Thanks to its use of the first commercial 1z process, the LPDDR5 package is 30 percent thinner than its predecessor, enabling 5G and multi-camera smartphones as well as foldable devices to pack more functionality into a slim design. The 16Gb LPDDR5 can build a 16GB package with only eight chips, whereas its 1y-based predecessor requires 12 chips (eight 12Gb chips and four 8Gb chips) to provide the same capacity. An overwhelming majority of the respondents were concerned about the Covid-19 pandemic, with 37% stating that they would wait longer than usual for the next smartphone purchase. “Two-thirds of the respondents are planning to spend as usual, whereas only 11% of them are interested in cutting their budget by 20% or more,” said Research Associate Arushi Chawla. The “Consumer Lens” survey was conducted among smartphone users during May-June 2020. The consumer opinions are drawn from a heterogeneous group in terms of age, monthly income, gender and occupation. The European smartphone market declined 24% year-on-year and 22% quarter-on-quarter in the second quarter of this year, according to Counterpoint’s Market Pulse service. Samsung captured 35 percent share in the European smartphone market in Q2, ahead of Apple’s 17% and Huawei’s 16%.
