According to a report by the global market research company Counterpoint on Feb. 14, 5G smartphone sales accounted for 1 percent of global smartphone sales last year. Samsung topped the list by taking 43 percent of the total, while Huawei ranked second with a 34 percent share.
South Korean, U.S. and Chinese markets, where large telecom companies play a big role through massive marketing and subsidies, quickly introduced 5G-enabled devices, leading the 5G smartphone market.
"Samsung Electronics introduced the widest range of 5G products from medium-priced products to premium products, sub-6GHz, and ultra-high frequency models," said Kang Kyung-soo, a researcher at Counterpoint.
Strong collaboration with telecommunication businesses and sales channels and its own semiconductor capabilities also supported Samsung Electronics’ achievement in the market share.
“Thanks to China's 5G spread, cheaper products are pouring in. We believe this year will be an important time for Samsung as competition is intensifying in the second half, with the release of Apple's 5G iPhone expected," the analyst said.
Huawei ranked second with a 34 percent market share, with most being sold in the Chinese market. Among Huawei’s products, Mate 20X was the only product that was sold outside of China and provided by Google’s mobile service.
In particular, the 5G version of Huawei’s Mate 30 series was sold briskly in China. “Huawei will move aggressively this year and bring down prices of 5G smartphones to below $200 by the end of the year”, Counterpoint predicted.

Joint innovations help governments and enterprises improve safety for first responders, on factory floors and for manufacturing plant workers

Samsung Electronics and IBM announced at the Samsung Developer Conference, a new joint platform leveraging IBM Cloud and AI capabilities, and Samsung’s mobile offerings. The collaboration between the two companies brings together IBM’s capabilities with the Samsung Galaxy ecosystem for today’s enterprise customers.

Safety Platform Powered by IBM Cloud, AI and 5G

Today’s announcement is designed to bring together IBM’s cloud innovations and Samsung’s Galaxy devices ecosystems, including Galaxy Tabs, Galaxy smartphones, and Galaxy Watches. This is designed to help improve the work environments for police officers, fire fighters and other first responders.
According to the International Labour Organization, nearly 3-million deaths occur each year due to occupational accidents. Governments and enterprises have an increasing need to build systems which track the health vitals of workers in remote or high-stress environments.
Built on the IBM Cloud, the new platform will now allow clients to track a worker’s vitals, including heart rate and physical activity, to determine if that person is in distress and automatically dispatch help.
For example, equipped with Samsung’s Galaxy Watches with biometric sensors and Galaxy smartphones enabled with 5G capability, first responders will have their safety and wellness indicators shared on this platform in real time. The solution constantly tracks their vital signs and other key indicators to instantly alert emergency managers if there is a change in any of these data points, which may indicate the responder may be in danger of a heart attack, heat exhaustion, or any other life-threatening event requiring immediate attention. The platform transmits the data to emergency managers to provide insights for their decision-making.
On this new platform, Samsung’s high-speed Galaxy devices can now be used at scale almost anywhere. These devices can be customized to withstand intense environments, such as those encountered by a soldier in the field, power plant employees working in harsh weather conditions, an emergency worker responding to a disaster or a worker in a mining plant.
Currently being piloted by multiple police forces, this new solution provides real time health and situational awareness insights on first responders to reduce operational risks in the field.

Samsung leads the market for 5G smartphones and intends to strengthen its position with the release of new models

Samsung Electronics Co. and Huawei Technologies Co. took turns announcing new mobile processors at the IFA technology show in Berlin last week, and the big thing the new chips have in common is an integrated 5G modem.
In a market dominated by U.S. rival Qualcomm Inc., the world’s two biggest smartphone manufacturers asserted a lead in delivering one of the keys to unlocking widespread availability of 5G devices. A system-on-chip that integrates the applications processor and a fifth-generation wireless modem significantly reduces the space and power requirements compared to existing solutions that use two separate chips.
Qualcomm has such models on its 2020 road map, but this past week Samsung announced it’s planning mass production for its alternative at the end of 2019 and Huawei is moving even faster, promising to release its most advanced processor with the Mate 30 Pro smartphone on Sept. 19.
Samsung’s approach with its Exynos 980 is to target the mid-range. Along with 5G capabilities, this new chip integrates 802.11ax fast Wi-Fi along with Samsung’s own NPU. It won’t run apps and games quite as quickly as flagship chips, but should help the South Korean company garner a slice of the more mainstream market before Qualcomm brings out an armada of new 5G-capable chips next year.
Samsung’s emphasis on this part of the mobile market was also signaled by its launch of the Galaxy A90 this month, one of the earliest examples of a mid-range device with 5G.
Since May 2019, Samsung has already sold more than 2 million 5G-smartphones. The South Korean tech giant expects to double this figure by the end of the year thanks to the launch of new models, including the Galaxy Fold 5G, Galaxy A90 5G and Galaxy Note10 5G.

Sales of Galaxy S10 5G exceed 1 mln in South Korea

Samsung Electronics Co. said Sunday it has sold more than 1 million units of the 5G version of its flagship smartphone, the Galaxy S10, in South Korea, a feat achieved 80 days after its launch.
The South Korean tech giant said sales of the Galaxy S10 5G exceeded 1 million over the weekend following its launch on April 5.
Samsung, the world's largest smartphone maker, said an average of some 15,000 Galaxy S10 5G phones were sold per day.
"Telecom operators have wooed customers with big subsidies, and the local 5G smartphone market will further grow down the road on the back of more lineups," an official at SK Telecom Co., the country's top mobile carrier, said.
LG Electronics Inc., Samsung's smaller local rival, has also rolled out its 5G smartphone, V50 ThinQ, and also received a positive response in South Korea. Since its debut here on May 10, sales of LG's V50 ThinQ topped 280,000 units, the sources said.
Samsung is expected to release its latest phablet, the Galaxy Note 10, in August in South Korea, with an official launch eyed for later that month.
While Samsung introduced its flagship Galaxy S10 smartphone in four variants, including one 5G model, the phablet will only support 5G in the domestic market.

Samsung leads S. Korean smartphone market in Q1

Samsung Electronics Co. maintained its top position in the South Korean smartphone market in the first quarter of the year on the back of strong demand for its flagship Galaxy series, industry data showed Wednesday.
Samsung carved out a 65 percent market share here in the January-March period, up 5 percentage points from a year earlier, according to the data compiled by industry tracker Counterpoint Research.
Apple came in second with a market share of 18 percent, down 2 percentage points from a year earlier. LG Electronics ranked third with a 16 percent share, down 1 percentage point over the cited period, the data showed.
Samsung Electronics released the device in early March. In late April, it said it had sold more than 1 million units of its new flagship smartphone, with the product becoming the fastest Galaxy device to surpass that mark.
Counterpoint said the local smartphone market will grow further in the second quarter of the year on the back of firm demand for 5G smartphones.

5G sign-ups outpace 4G's launch in South Korea 

It looks like 5G adoption is going quite well in South Korea as according to the Ministry of Science and Technology as of June 10 there were 1 million subscribers to the new generation network. This number was reached in just 69 days which is 11 fewer than it took the country to reach 1 million 4G users back in 2011. Commercial 5G networks in South Korea were launched on April 3 and given the current subscriber count it means that each day saw an average of 17,000 new subscribers.
SK Telecom holds 40% of all 5G subscriptions while Korea Telecom and LG Uplus each account for 30%. SK Telecom and KT saw more customers upgrade from 4G to 5G while LG Uplus users grew the most with an estimated 21% rise in the past month.
Despite noted shortcomings with 5G speeds and limited initial coverage, it seems that the installation of additional base stations coupled with the aggressive promotions of 5G smartphones like the Samsung Galaxy S10 5G and LG V50 ThinQ 5G have led to more consumer jumping on board the 5G experience.
According to recent projections, an additional 3-4 million users in South Korea will join the 5G consumer base before the end of the year. The demand for 5G smartphones and improved network coverage are going to be the main drivers of the speedier adoption.

Galaxy S10 5G priced higher in US than in Korea

Samsung’s first 5G-powered smartphone is expected to carry a higher price tag in the United States than in South Korea. 
US mobile carrier Verizon said Thursday that it had begun preorders for the Samsung Galaxy S10 5G, which will hit Verizon stores May 16. The 256 GB option costs $1,300 and the 512 GB option is $1,400. 
But in Korea, where the model became available April 5 after the rollout of 5G commercial services here, the 256 GB model costs about 1.39 million won ($1,205), with the 512 GB option going for 1.56 million won.
The Galaxy S10 5G is Verizon’s second 5G phone - after the Moto Z3 - but the first to integrate 5G functionality into the hardware. The Z3 offers 5G capabilities only when used with a backpack-like accessory called the 5G Moto Mod.
According to Verizon, the S10 5G will be available at its stores for a limited time. Each customer to place a preorder will get a free set of Galaxy Buds and a free Samsung Wireless Charging Battery Pack, the company said. 
While the processor and software are pretty much the same for all the S10 siblings, the 5G features a 6.7-inch AMOLED display, a 4,500-mAh battery and six camera lenses. By comparison, the S10 Plus features a 6.4-inch display, a 4,100 mAh battery and five camera lenses.

The South Korean tech giant said sales of the Galaxy S10 were more than 1 million as of Tuesday following its launch on March 8. Its predecessor, the Galaxy S9, reached the milestone in 60 days.
Samsung, the world's largest smartphone maker, said its 5G version sold 230,000 units after being released on April 5.
The nation's three mobile carriers -- SK Telecom Co., KT Corp. and LG Uplus Corp. -- switched on the 5G network earlier this month, making South Korea the world's first nation to roll out a commercial 5G service.
The upbeat figure came as Samsung, also the world's No. 1 memory chip maker, is seeing a drop in its earnings due to falling chip prices and a lackluster performance in its mobile business.
Earlier, Samsung said its operating profit was estimated at 6.2 trillion won (US$5.45 billion) in the January-March period, a 60.4 percent drop from a year ago.
The tech giant expected overall sales to have fallen 14.1 percent on-year to 52 trillion won in the three-month period.
Samsung did not break down the performances of its respective business divisions. The tech behemoth is set to announce detailed earnings later this month.
The figures were below market expectations of 6.7 trillion won, based on the survey conducted by Yonhap Infomax, the financial arm of Yonhap News Agency on 28 South Korean brokerage houses. The sales estimate stood at 53.4 trillion won on average.
Samsung's IT and mobile business was expected to have posted robust earnings on the back of the Galaxy S10.
During a shareholder meeting on March 20, DJ Koh, head of Samsung's smartphone business, said the initial market reaction to the Galaxy S10 was "positive" in major markets, including China, and expressed hope for improved profitability from the division.

Galaxy S10 5G занял 1-е место, свергнув с пьедестала широко разрекламированный китайский Huawei P30 Pro. И хотя в рейтинге основных камер оба соперника набрали аналогичное количество баллов (по 112 каждый), Samsung уверенно обогнал конкурентов в рейтинге фронтальных камер, получив 97 баллов. Кроме того, Galaxy S10 5G установил новый рекорд, став первым смартфоном, завоевавшим 100 баллов за качество видеосъёмки.
Если рассматривать только позицию фотосъёмки основной камерой, то здесь результаты чуть ниже, чем у Huawei P30 Pro — 117 против 119 баллов. Но по качеству видео Huawei P30 Pro набрал только 97 баллов.
В качестве неоспоримых преимущетв Galaxy S10 5G эксперты DxOMark отметили точный баланс белого и цветопередачу в большинстве сценраие съёмки. Кроме того, специалистов впечатлил хороший динамический диапазон, быстрый и точный автофокус, хорошие результаты при съёмке со вспышкой. 
В рейтинге сэлфи-камер Samsung Galaxy S10 5G обошёл Galaxy S10 Plus (96 баллов), Google Pixel 3 и Galaxy Note 9 (ро 92 балла). Huawei P30 Pro в этой позиции занимает лишь 5-е место с 89-ю баллами.

Samsung Electronics today announced that the Galaxy S10 5G has received the number one spots in DxOMark’s camera rankings for both its rear and front-facing cameras. DxOMark is the trusted independent testing standard for mobile camera image quality. Using rigorous testing protocols, DxOMark provides consumers with an impartial and reliable rating for smartphone camera performance and quality.
The Galaxy S10 5G’s rear camera photo and video capabilities were both ranked number one on the DxOMark Mobile scale, achieving an overall score of 112, with 117 in photo and 100 in video, the first device to hit 100 bar. DxOMark’s testing recognizes that the Galaxy S10 5G’s rear camera features fast and accurate autofocus, capturing photos that have a good level of detail preservation, color rendering and exposure under various conditions.
The Galaxy S10 5G also scored first place on the DxOMark Selfie ranking for its front camera with an overall score of 97, receiving a score of 101 in the photo category, and 90 in the video category. To evaluate the Galaxy S10 5G’s camera performance, DxOMark tested Exposure and Contrast, Color, Autofocus, Texture, Noise, Flash, Artifacts, Zoom and Bokeh under low light, indoor and bright light conditions.
The Galaxy S10 5G features a professional-grade camera set-up with a total of six cameras – two on the front and four on the back. Аналитики компании IHS Markit прогнозируют бум на рынке 5G-смартфонов в ближайшие годы. Ожидается, что в 2019-м производители реализуют порядка 37 миллионов аппаратов с поддержкой сетей 5-го поколения (5G), а в 2020-м отгрузки увеличатся более чем в 3 раза, до 120.000.000 штук.
Первые коммерческие сети 5G заработали в Южной Корее и в двух американских городах - Миннеаполиса и Чикаго - в начале апреля 2019 года.
На сегодняшний день топовый смартфон Samsung Galaxy S10 5G является единственным массовым коммуникатором с полноценной поддержкой протоколов ультраскоростной связи. Спрос на новинку оказался гораздо выше даже самых оптимистичных прогнозов, несмотря на высокую цену ($1220). В салонах связи ведущих южнокорейских операторов первые партии аппаратов были раскуплены уже в 1-й день продаж, 5 апреля. В магазинах впервые за долгое время выстраиваются длинные очереди из желающих перейти на новые 5G-тарифы.
Аналитики прогнозируют, что по темпам роста внедрения 5G существенно опередит предыдущий стандарт 4G LTE. По оценкам IHS, объёмы отгрузок аппаратов, поддерживающих 5G, за первые 2 года с момента запуска сетей 5-го поколения в 6 раз превысят показатели, зарегистрированные за такой же временной отрезок по LTE-смартфонам.
В дальнейшем восходящий тренд продолжит набирать обороты: к 2023 году поставки 5G-смартфонов должны превысить 525.000.000 штук, считают в IHS.
Между тем, южнокорейские операторы SK Telecom, KT и LG U+ и американский Verizon, запустившие в коммерческую эксплуатацию 5G-сети, уже сообщают о высоком спросе со стороны пользователей.
Южнокорейский портал Pulse со ссылкой на источники в местных компаниях пишет, что за первые 4 дня после запуска в стране 5G, количество подписчиков, перешедших на новый стандарт, уже превысило 100.000.
KT, ведущая телекоммуникационная компания Южной Кореи, ожидает, что число пользователей мобильной связи 5-го поколения в 2023 году достигнет 1 миллиарда, а в 2025-м - 2,7 миллиарда по всему миру.
Напомним, что Южная Корея стала первой в мире страной, обеспечившей полноценный ввод в коммерческую эксплуатацию сетей 5G практически во всех крупных мегаполисах, причём покрытие услугами 5G здесь растёт рекордными темпами. Приёмо-передающее оборудование, поддерживающее работу в новейших ультраскоростных сетях, по большей части, разработано и изготовлено на предприятиях Samsung Electronics.
Согласно сообщению американского телеканала CNN, Samsung обладает наибольшим количеством патентов на технологии 5G, заметно опережая таких конкурентов как Ericsson, Huawei, ZTE, Nokia и Qualcomm.

Korean telcos cheered on stronger-than-expected early migration to 5G

South Korea’s top three mobile carriers SK Telecom, KT and LG Uplus are going all out to secure an additional supply of Samsung Electronics’ newest smartphones supporting 5G connection as the number of early customers migrating to their 5G services more than meet expectations. 
Sources said on Monday the number of 5G subscribers are estimated to exceed 100,000 on the fourth day after the world’s first commercial 5G service was launched in Korea. Last weekend, customers had to wait a long line to sign up in front of large phone stores in downtown Seoul. 
Demand for 5G migration is stronger than expected as more people become certain of incremental improvement in service quality that is compromised by the lack of base stations and network resources to support 5G communication especially in non-metro areas. 
LG Uplus said its initial quota for 25,000 subscribers to its 5G service was fully consumed on the first day. KT announced its 5G subscribers surpassed 30,000 as of 5:00 pm on Saturday. Market leader SK Telecom did not disclose the number of its 5G subscribers but its figure is known to be on par. 
The industry had speculated early 5G demand would be limited because Samsung Electronics’ Galaxy S10 5G, the only 5G-enabled model in the market, is retailed at a high price of 1,397,000 won ($1,220) and monthly plans stand between 80,000 won and 130,000 won, higher than plans for 4G services. But customers show positive responses to the latest Samsung smartphone and are attracted to deep subsidies from telcos in fierce competition. 
The three telecom carriers focus their subsidy offers mainly on 5G services, creating an unusual situation in which a 4G LTE smartphone is more expensive than the 5G phone in some cases.
